It may not be their greatest rival, but the Vikings Packers rivalry is one of the best in the league.

Except for when they won a Super Bowl…and they made the playoffs every year…and their QB got MVP…and a bunch of their players got national tv deals. Other than that, yeah, they retired from the public eye.

The Vikings (team, franchise, fan base) will never even approach the Packers (team, franchise, fan base).

To even insinuate otherwise is folly.

It is time to retire Paul Hornung’s #5. He was promised that it would be retired by Vince Lombardi. And Lombardi announced it to the press. Specifically, he made the announcement on July 10, 1967, at what was then the Packers’ annual press party at the Oneida Golf and Riding Club. And the top headline in the sports section of the Green Bay Press-Gazette the following day read:

I don’t disagree with you about the Golden Boy deserving to have his number retired. Especially since Vince said that’s what he wanted. But Green Bay shows a great deal of restraint in handing out these honors compared to other franchises (*cough* Yankees *cough*).

The fact of the matter is only Tony Canadeo, Don Hutson, Ray Nitschke, Bart Starr, and Reggie White have their uniform numbers retired. You can add Curly Lambeau to the list unofficially, since nobody has worn his #1 in almost 90 years.

Odds are next on the list is #4, not #5.

Typical Packer fan, make up the rules to suit his/her point of view only to change them when it no longer suits them. What purplepunisher infers is the record since the NFC/AFC merger of 1970.

Besides that, when Favre played for the Packers I rooted against him but respected him. We all know he is a great qb regardless of what team he played for. Too bad Packer fans are still discontented children about the matter. Just like when Jennings is brought up.

Amen…And while GB and Chicago fight for the NFC North title and beyond, MN has to worry that suddenly this will be a 4-team race with the Lions suddenly making moves like a real team.

Well, you have to remember that it was the Packer management that refused to let Brett take the field when he showed up to training camp – per his contract.

Instead of letting him on the field, they traded him away like an old worn out car.

So after being discarded by the organization that he helped rebuild – Favre – when offered the opportunity – came back to the NFC North and on his historic return to Lambeau Field…

Those so called Packer fans attempted to boo him off the field.

Funny thing is – Favre just kept his cool – and beat the Packers on their home turf in front of the worthless fan base.

Favre wasn’t the one doing the cheating. It was the Packer organization and their classless fans.

FWIW – I’m a season ticket holder and was at the game at the Metrodome when Favre set the all time TD record on a pass to Jennings.

The Vikings fans stood and gave him a standing ovation – understanding the historic meaning.

Viking fans have a lot of class. Packer fans, well not so much.

People love to blast Favre’s failures, but the fact is they occurred because he was the only one able to even get them into the position. The defense was soft and lacked play makers, Sherman was a turd of a coach that took forever to get a team up and going at the start of the season. Look at all the ‘great’ WR he had that couldn’t repeat what they had with him tossing the ball (Billy Shroeder, Sydney Rice, Javon Walker, Percy Harvin).

Packer fans forget that all star QB’s don’t grow on trees on Lombardi Avenue.

All the Viking fans love to chide the Packer fans for not being sufficiently deferential to Favre for all that he has done for the Packers over the years.

But its like a husband who sought a divorce with his wife and his wife knows that the husband regards their sleazy next door neighbor as low rent trash so the first thing the wife does after getting the divorce is seek out that sleazy neighbor and moving in with him. And when the husband basically ignores the ex-wife, all the on-lookers are commenting that he doesn’t appreciate all those years together and how could he ignore her like that. ”
