Rob Chudzinski wants to create competition at quarterback

The Browns have scheduled a workout with West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, but drafting a quarterback isn’t the only way they could go to challenge incumbent starter Brandon Weeden.

And it doesn’t mean signing a free agent, either. That’s probably a good thing since the free agent market offers little in the way of solutions to teams looking for a starter. With the draft possibilities still being assessed, Browns coach Rob Chudzinski made it a point to say that Weeden’s competition may already be on the roster.

“I see it as creating competition. That can be from a number of different places. We have some guys that are there. We’re gonna coach them all, coach them hard. We’re gonna give them all opportunities to show what they can do,” Chudzinski said, via Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com. “So I think there’ll be competition from within the room. And then, the other part of it is, of the great players I’ve been fortunate to be around, competition comes from within, too. I think as coaches we have to bring that out in our guys.”

Chudzinski isn’t ruling anything out in terms of an addition and you’d imagine they’ll be looking for a draft prospect that interests offensive coordinator Norv Turner, but it may wind up being Weeden, Colt McCoy and Thaddeus Lewis in the running this summer. That bodes well for Weeden’s chances of keeping the job. The outlook is less clear for the Browns offense.
