The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday they had signed a free agent safety to a one-year contract.

And no, it’s not Charles Woodson. The 49ers announced they have reached a deal to re-sign Darcel McBath.

McBath appeared in all 16 regular season games and three playoff games for the 49ers last season. He made a key tackle of Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker on a fake field goal try in the first half of the Super Bowl that helped allow the 49ers to remain within reach for their second half comeback.

McBath was non-tendered by the 49ers making him an unrestricted free agent. McBath recorded just seven tackles on the season serving primarily on special teams.

The 49ers have now signed two safeties in the last week after having Woodson in for a free agent visit. The market remains quiet for Woodson with the 49ers being his only scheduled visit so far in free agency.

Guys like Woodson, Urlacher are simply pricing themselves out w/o realizing that nobody views them as starters now.

    Slow market; slow reporting day…..

So far the Niners have lost or traded Smith, Moss, Walker, Goldson, Francois, Sopoaga and Ginn.

But to hear 49ers fans tell it, all that depth is going to be replaced with draft picks (Taylor Mays, anyone?), including their slew of 7th rounders.

Given that the last team to win the Super Bowl after losing it the year before was Miami in 1973, combined with the underperformance of Super Bowl Losers since then, it’s obviously going to be a long season in San Francisco.

steviemo … What?? You call Smith, Moss, Francois, Sopoaga and Ginn “depth”? Sure losing Goldson an Walker isn’t great for s but come on man… Lets not stretch the truth here. The rest of those guys had little to no impact on the team success this season (with the exception of Alex until losing his job to a better QB)

Sopoaga and Francois? You’re kidding, right? The Niners have zero D-line depth now and Justin Smith is getting up there in years. Dorsey has been a colossal bust. I greatly doubt a bunch of rookies will be able to hold water compared to the departed veterans.

SF thinks it’s New England West, and everyone knows how the Patriots’ defense fell apart when they allowed everyone to leave. Belichick had a ton of draft picks all those years, too, but they have no SB wins since 2004. The Niners have jumped the shark.
