Try reading the Constitution sometime. Specifically, read the Ninth Amendment. You know, the one that says that any rights not spelled out in the Constitution are not necessarily prohibited by it. It’s sort of the Founding Fathers’ way of saying “anything we forgot should be included also.”

Nonsense. Changing the definition of marriage is nothing like the civil rights movement. Virtually all black people are insulted that you would equate the two.

First of all it’s hilarious that you think you know what “virtually all black people” think. Secondly I was referring to gay rights in general but those rights absolutely should extend to marriage. If you disagree then you are discriminating against a group of people based on their sexual orientation. Discrimination is discrimination whether it is against blacks, hispanics, gays etc…The right for gays to marry is a foregone conclusion. It’s just a matter of time. If you don’t like it then don’t marry someone of the same sex. That’s the only way it could affect you personally

People don’t get to vote on civil rights. If you had asked Mississippi in the 50′s about black’s rights, they probably would’ve voted against it too.

Civil Rights is one subject that the law needs to lead the people, not the other way around.

The comparison is absurd. The U.S. government intervened in the civil rights movement because large criminal organizations (the KKK) murdered and intimidated an entire group of people while state and local authorities largely condoned and ignored the issue. One question: When was the last time you saw gay marriage protestors being sprayed with fire hoses by the police on the news? Try never.

I strongly disagree. The problem is that government has ceded the creation of a status that grants rights under the law – marriage – to non-governmental organizations including religious groups.

We should instead institute the concept of a ‘legal marriage’ status which is available upon request to two individuals each of consenting age, similar to an application for a marriage license now. Once the application is complete, the couple is legally married. They are also free to participate in any religious or secular ceremony as their beliefs dictate, subject to the agreement/sanction of their religion.

The problem we have now comes from government not being into the marriage process enough. And that’s easily solved.
