Titans sign Bernard Pollard

AP

A day after one of the Ravens’ starting safeties from last season, Ed Reed, signed with the Texans, the Ravens’ other starting safety last season has also signed with a new team: Bernard Pollard is heading to Tennessee.

“I’ve agreed to sign a one-year deal with the Titans,” Pollard told Josina Anderson of ESPN.

The 28-year-old Pollard started every game he played for the Ravens last season (13 in the regular season and four in the postseason), but the Ravens decided he wasn’t worth the money — and maybe not worth the headaches.

Before playing the last two seasons with the Ravens, Pollard played two with the Texans and two with the Chiefs. He’s been a starter in every stop. In Tennessee he joins a secondary that has also added free agent safety George Wilson this offseason to go along with incumbent starter Michael Griffin.

  1. Bernard Pollard is very underrated and underappreciated player. He is a good addition to the Titans.
As a Texans fan, I am glad to see the division improving. Hopefully, the overall quarterback play improves in the division also.

  2. I don’t care how good Ozzie Newsome is as a GM, theirs no way he’s losing all these starters and replacing them to make them a playoff team anytime soon.

  3. This is the guy the league should be worried about dropping his head… Not the likes of Trent, AP and Marshawn.

That said, he does bring it!

  4. The vaunted Ravens Defense of the past 12 years is now officially history and the pressure will be on Flacco and the Offense. Ravens will have to score 33 PPG to win next season.

  5. As a ravens fan i was pissed to see him released eventhough he was getting paid 2 million. Hope he has a great season. Crushboy31 lol. Big hits coming to Tennessee.

  6. Sorry indywilson40 but the Patriots are not scheduled to play the Titans during the regular season. But it is good to see fans of other teams wishing injury on a team that their team is incapable of beating.

  7. He is a very good player and makes some big time hits. There is probably some reason why teams keep letting him go though.

  8. Who is going to be left on this Ravens defense. This isn’t a knock because they just won a Super Bowl and deserve to be proud. But you can’t absorb losses like this at every level and compete. I mean they will be drafting last pick in every round. I don’t think they make the playoffs with Flacco and Rice alone.

  9. on that note, i just want to point out, except for delusional fans like ravenator (whom I am ashamed to say a fellow Ravens fan), i think most ravens fans understand we won’t start out the season as superbowl favorites.

we kept our roster last year as a last hurrah to win a superbowl, and we are fortunate we did. now we had to purge a bit, and most likely I view our team as 10-6, with potential to go to division championship.

let’s see what happens in the draft though. hopefully some good players fall to us, and we do have 12 draft picks.

  10. U don’t know Ozzie too well then! We will pick up elvis this weekend and if not it’ll b more than likely freeney, doesn’t matter who our safeties r which is moe than likely huff and who knows, u don’t need very good safeties when the qb is running for his life! We lost 8 started 2 years ago and ended up in the afc championship! We not rebuilding were RELOADING! #RAVENS

  11. one thing for sure no titians in playoffs’.wait
for ravens final roster and then we’ll see
you in the playoffs as usaual……

  12. Wow, so with Greg Williams being our D assistant if (no when) Pollard knocks somebody out will it be an issue?

  13. Titan fans be prepared for a bunch of 15 yard personal foul penalties that extend drives, blown coverages and the occasional big hit. He misses more tackles than he makes big ones.

  14. Bernard put fear in the hearts of WR’s and RB’s and contributed a lot to our Super Bowl run. That being said he’s not that fast, he can’t cover anybody and a lot of his hits lead to 15 yard penalties now. The league is changing and they are taking away Bernard’s greatest attributes. The saying “Play like a Raven” is going to have evolve and unfortunately his hits will be missed but hard hitting safeties are going to be extinct pretty soon since The NFL will be playing flag football by 2020.

  15. Awesome for Patriots fans. The Patriots don’t play the Titans in the regular season in 2013 and they are unlikely to meet in the playoffs. Finally the Patriot killer is out of the mix.

  16. I count 7 key players the ravens have given away this offseason that helped them win the Super Bowl. Team is falling apart, and as more players leave, the more the guys who are still their want to leave. I’m guessing 8-8 or 9-7 for ravens..

  17. Pollard is a great run stopper, and if you have the Patriots on your schedule he could be a real help.

But he’s not a pass stopper and game seems to be moving toward better coverage guys. Also he gets a lot of PF penalties as refs seem to be watching him.

The so-called “vaunted Raven defense” wasn’t very good last season, so it won’t be as hard to make up for losses as might be thought.

Now, cue the unending clueless “this is Flacco’s fault” comments.

  18. I wish him luck, but he has 6 broken ribs and the game is changing. The Raven’s D wasn’t that good last year and they need to adjust. I hated to see Bolden go more than any – but I still trust that Ozzie knows best.
We may not be at the top of our game next year, but how many of you can say that your team JUST WON A SUPER BOWL.
Do you know how hard it is to have payoff wins 5 years in a row? … or even make the playoffs, period?
I guess this is shocking to a lot of people, but most close Ravens’ watchers knew this was coming…but it was worth it.

  19. I just want to remind all the Steeler homies and other naysayers, who had the Ravens going out in the 1st round of the playoffs this past year, that the City of Baltimore and the Ravens love being the underdogs.

  20. I’m curious which “guys who are still their (sic) want to leave” you are talking about.

Also curious on who those 7 key players are the Ravens have “given away”.

Its what happens to winning teams. Since you don’t understand that you must back a team that isn’t too successful and never has this problem.

  21. “Ravens will have to score 33 PPG to win next season”.

Kind of like they did in the playoffs?

  22. A QB like Flacco?

You mean one who in his last 8 posteason games is 6-2, with 2,012 yards, 18 TDs and 2 Ints?

    Gotcha.

  23. Go Titans ! It’s about time Bud Adams opened up his wallet ! If the Titans defense is better because of some of these free agent signings the great! Pollard is known as a hard hitter then bring it on!

It was over last year, (ranked 17th), Offense began to carry the team. This transition has been a couple year coming.

  25. Oh man, The mass exodus continues. The Steelers may be in trouble, but its gonna be the battle of the browns and the purple browns at the bottom of the AFC North

  26. Robert Kraft probably paid part of a contract clause that put Pollard to a team that wasn’t on the CHEATCATS schedule! He bought Goodell, the officials and CBS, this isn’t unbelievable is it?

  27. As a true Patriots fan I WANT the Pats to play him. It’s too bad, now there’s not much chance for pay back. He will be ripe for it too.

  28. We will see waht Godel is made of when Pollard puts his head down again, again, again and again.

Its ok, some of them are still getting over the whininess and poor sportsmanship that they developed via their prior QB and GM. 😀

I didn’t even think of Pollard and Greggggg together…yikes.

I guess Tenn is looking for a little shot of what they miss now that Finnegan is gone (saltiness, etc).

I’m guessing you ate paint chips as a kid? So the Ravens are falling apart, huh? Flacco, Rice, Smith, Jones, Suggs, Ngata, and Webb back? Plus we have one of the best drafting GM’s in the league and you think we’ll go 8-8 with two sorry Ohio teams and a declining Steeler team?! Ha! I could easily see the Ravens winning that division this year. Good luck to you Pollard in Tennessee!

  31. why do all you morons think Flacco’s contract have anything to do with the purge?the defense wasn’t really any good last season, most of the one’s who are gone were old players. they do this evert year. morons need to worry where your sorry teams will be next season.what will pats do now that there is no Brady rule? what will steelers do now that they still have a ton of old players?colts = fluke , denver, one good hit on ” the forehead ” and they are done.did i leave anyone’s sorry azz team out?

  32. Ozzie whiffs too!

Remember he drafted Sergio Kindle over Daryl Washington, Sean Lee, and Navarro Bowman in 2010. lol.

  33. Sorry indywilson40 but the Patriots are not scheduled to play the Titans during the regular season. But it is good to see fans of other teams wishing injury on a team that their team is incapable of beating.

I’m a Giants fan and I wish it. I hope you find that good to see.

  34. 1. Pollard is a big hitter, but a poor coverage safety.
    2. Pollard has been on 3 teams in 6 years. Maybe there’s a reason for that, and it has to do with his off field attitude, not his on field play.
    3. The Ravens D was horrible last year; the worst in their history since 2000; and was in need of a total revamping.
    4. The team has made the transition from a heavily D oriented team to a team driven by its franchise QB — who has outplayed every QB you can name over the past 5 years. And that was under an oppressive OC who couldn’t get out of his own way. Once Cameron was gone, then the real Joe was really able to emerge. And it’s just beginning. Give him a full pre-season with Caldwell, and it’s only going to get better.

  35. Dude is a beast when it comes to laying the wood. In a short time he became one of my favorite Ravens. Watch this years playoff games against the Colts & Pats again and see how the receivers simply refused to go across the middle and make catches by the middle of the third quarter. Pollard will knock you out cold..just ask Stevan Ridley, although he may still be unable to remember much of that game.

For all of the Steeler fans yapping about Joe’s cap hit, move on. Pollard’s departure wasn’t about his own salary. Part of the reason was pass coverage deficiencies and the biggest part IMHO was his vocal leadership in the locker room that rubbed Harbaugh and the brass the wrong way. Notice that all of the players involved in the late season locker room mutiny are now gone.

Time to revamp the Defense and what better time than now. I’ll take a bit of a down season next year if it means grabbing some younger players that help us win in the future.

  36. Not a fan of Pollard’s and didn’t want the Titans to go this route. But like the George Wilson signing so maybe his intangibles will help cancel out Pollard’s sometimes polarizing personality.

And they for sure need someone who plays with more fire than Michael Griffin roaming the middle. Still have no idea why they gave Griffin a big-money deal last year.

  37. And just when I think the Ravens couldn’t get any weaker, they go and lose interest in someone like this. Pathetic. This franchise is tumbling down further and further as the offseason continues. Cheers!

  38. Amazing – Ravens fans are still convinced that paying Flacco $52 million over the next two years and $120 over six, is a cap friendly deal that won’t impact their ability to re-sign veterans.

They’re now trying to convince themselves that Reed, Pollard, Boldin, etc are old, washed up guys that they didn’t want to keep anyways – and that the team is now stronger.

  39. BP can not tackle. Watch EVERY game he has ever played; he launches himself, hands at his sides and tries to knock the other guy over. HE CAN NOT TACKLE thus he is not a good player.
