Andrews calls RG3 “superhuman” in his ACL recovery

Andrews Getty Images

Dr. James Andrews arguably is the best orthopedic surgeon in the country, if not the world.  (Or, perhaps more accurately, he has convinced everyone in the sports world that he is.)  But his expertise doesn’t extend from his hands to his mouth.

Andrews’ most recent gaffe comes from describing Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III as “superhuman” in his ability and motivation to recover from a torn ACL suffered in a playoff loss to the Seahawks.

In this specific situation, it’s critical that fan and media expectations be managed properly.  Calling Griffin “superhuman” will serve only to make everyone believe he’ll be ready for Week One — even if he isn’t.  Then, Griffin will either end up risking injury or appearing less than “superhuman” if he fails to be ready to go.

It’s not the first time Andrews has said something he shouldn’t when it comes to Griffin.  Last month, Andrews boasted that Griffin is “way ahead of schedule.”  And only days before Griffin’s already-injured knee imploded on the green dirt of FedEx Field, Andrews said that Griffin re-entered the December contest in which his knee was originally injured without being cleared.

So while Andrews is a great doctor, he’s not a P.R. specialist, he doesn’t play one on TV, and he didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.  Or ever.

If bob was “superhuman” he wouldn’t have been hurt in the first place.

pathetic, green dirt, just means more green paper in goofy as$ Snyder’s lady purse because he did not have to spend $10,000 to re-sod the playing field. Pathetic.

Somebody is paying him to sya that. RGIII to keep his name out there in endorsementland or the Redskins in order to sell some more tickets.

One could argue RG3 has superior, “superhuman”, genetics from generations of selective breeding.

Or He’s rehabbing at Andrews private facility in Florida and Andrews is advertising

  10. deangelo23hall says: Mar 23, 2013 11:13 AM

So many people already writing off RG3’s career on this site.

Will NEVER become a great QB with one good wheel. FraudIII was overhyped and overrated to begin with. Dr. Andrews must be pumping every PED available into the one-hit wonder .
The REAL DEAL is Mr. Russell Wilson. The best QB to come into the league since the beginning.

He will go down in history to ever play the game.

FraudIII will go down as One And Done

  13. jh500 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:15 AM

RG3, Kap, Wilson, Newton..People better get used to these QB’s. Extinct QB’s like Brady and Manning will go extinct once they retire. It’s a new era. RG3 will return better than ever.

  15. kelleygreen49 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:18 AM

Wilson has more Vick tendencies than RG3. hes always holding onto the ball too long and then scrambling away. Hell take his big hit soon enough

  16. despenc925 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:18 AM

is this the same doctor who let him go back out and play in the playoffs after he was injured?! I guess he had “super human” recovery to go back out there just get injured again.

  17. adrianisgreatestofalltime says: Mar 23, 2013 11:18 AM

This team overachieved last year, as did my vikings I fear a wake up call may be in store for 2 NFC playoff teams this season

  18. johnnyjagfan says: Mar 23, 2013 11:19 AM

Does RGIII have the same medical privacy rights under HIPAA as the rest of us or does he sign them away so his doctor can serve as a PR guy? Strange.

  19. bartlettruss says: Mar 23, 2013 11:20 AM

I don’t think I’d let Dr. Andrews remove a wart. First he pulls that whole drama about being “scared to death” about RG3 being on the field when he was the one man who could have stopped it and now he’s saying things that will pressure RG3 to get back on the field early.

I’m not a doctor, but it seems mighty soon after an ACL surgery to be talking about the rate of recovery. Especially since this is the second time he’s done it.

Derek Rose is still out from an ACL after almost a year and Dr. Andrews is virtually comparing RG3’s recovery to Adrian Peterson’s in less than two months.

  20. rico004 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:20 AM

lemme guess…logicailvoice says “Rg3 is an actual god on earth, all the redskins are gods once they sign for this superhuman organization”

  21. tinbender2000 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:20 AM

Superhuman huh? Sounds like North Korean propaganda. Or something logicalvoice would say.

  22. n0hopeleft says: Mar 23, 2013 11:21 AM

If he were Superhuman, he would’ve won at least one playoff game. Instead, he was smashed in his own house.

  23. letmesetyoustraight says: Mar 23, 2013 11:21 AM

  24. 2ringraven says: Mar 23, 2013 11:24 AM

He’s not even the best quarterback in Maryland. Logicalvoice is jealous.

  25. sickcuz says: Mar 23, 2013 11:24 AM

Dr. James Andrews is commenting like this because he used a new technique on RG3 which included added stem cells. He’s just excited about the progress so far….Then again people would rather drama than facts

  26. anarchopurplism says: Mar 23, 2013 11:25 AM

Logicalvoice is mysteriously silent on the notion that Bobby Griff may be taking PEDs

Funny, he’s been such a loudmouth about Adrian Peterson

  27. wryly1 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:25 AM

All Dr. Andrews can speak to is the medical aspect of recovery. No one can possibly know or predict at this point how much quickness, plant, shift, or athletic capability he will regain.

  28. goodellmustgo says: Mar 23, 2013 11:26 AM

If Bob Griffin played for any other team he might have a chance. But….playing for the inept Washington Indians pretty much tells you it’s curtains for him and his bionic knee.

Dr Andrews is not, and never will be involved in personnel decisions. The team doctors, coaches and Griffen will decide when he is able to play. Andrews can say whatever he wants… he is only commenting on the progress. Any conclusions drawn from his vague updates are certainly not his fault. You are only throwing gas on the fire here.

  40. terpfan76 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:34 AM

I could agree with over hyped but overrated? Yeah, I don’t think so. His play on the field was spectacular as was his behavior and leadership. For better or worse, the kid refused to quit and proved to be a pretty quick study. He learned after getting concussed that he needed to avoid getting sacked/hit so much and made adjustments. Unfortunately, a freak shot to the knee in an attempt to get down and avoid a hit put the hurt to him. Then, as previously noted, poor field conditions as well as some poor blocking lead to further injury.

Coach Shanahan and company deserve much credit for his rapid development but also deserve a lot of criticism for keeping RGIII in in a game where he was clearly not anywhere close to being 100%. While I hope Griffin is ready to go week 1, I truly hope they make absolutely sure he’s healthy and ready to go or else rum with Cousins until he is ready. Lets treat the Skins’ phenomenon much like the Nats treated Strasburg.

  41. jdouble777 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:35 AM

Or, perhaps he is as good as advertised and RG does make a miraculous recovery, starting Week 1 and not missing a beat. Then, you Sir become a moron for judging the perspective of someone much more educated on the topic and an IQ double your own.

  42. belicheckisgod says: Mar 23, 2013 11:36 AM

He might be the greatest surgeon when it comes to sports injuries, but anyone with a brain knows his patients are all using PEDS. Just look at Peterson (tears his at end of season and comes back and wins MVP). Thats not normal for even the best athletes, smells like HGH to me. Superhuman=HGH.

  43. S.Nevada says: Mar 23, 2013 11:36 AM

I’m tired of this and I’m a Redskins fan. Not the talk of his recovery, we all know he’s going to play the first game and have a good season.

I’m sick of the shock related to this whole thing, players got hurt, life goes on. Everytime he takes a hit next year people are going to be ‘explaining’ how they know more than the coach. Please quit.

  51. thebonus44 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:42 AM

Cheap ass Redskins. They’ll trade 3 1st round draft picks to get RGIII, yet they won’t shell out any money to do something about one of the worst fields in the NFL ?

Meanwhile, 50 miles to the North, the Ravens re-evaluate their turf every other year and have probably gone through 4-5 iterations of the FieldTurf product trying to get the best surface they can get.

  54. Patriot42 says: Mar 23, 2013 11:46 AM

I’m just glad he is getting better, quicker ! Guys like this are why we are all fans, right ? Yeah, a little hype but as medical science advances it is only going to get better. In the old days little R.G. would have been “through with money” as they say. I hate to see the injuries to any player, so this is good news for the sport we love.

  61. dontouchmyjunk says: Mar 23, 2013 12:00 PM

It just doesn’t matter. Mobile QB’s get injured. The only certainty is that the Redskins need a quality back-up QB because Griffith will be in the tub for at least 1/3rd of his career.

  62. balzer41 says: Mar 23, 2013 12:02 PM

First off Bengalsstillsuck, before you get on a football forum and start attacking people by calling them and the State of Maryland stupid you should learn how to punctuate. Your grammer is no better than a 4 year old. Most of you on here are jealous Robert Griffin III isn’t your QB. He had one of the most dynamite rookie seasons ever! Facts, not fiction. Some of you root for teams (SEA, Ari, Cin, Buf, Cle, Min, PHI, Car, Jax, Det, Atl, & Hou) who have never won a Super Bowl and may not in the next 20 years. Washington has 5 appearances w/ 3 wins and Griffin will be bringing us a 4th in the next 3-6 years! You would think Seattle and Philly were Champions they way they are hyped up, losers and that’s all they will be. We had 18 million reasons last year and 18 million reasons this year to come in dead last in our div, but we didn’t and won’t happen this year. 89% on here act like 3 year olds and have no knowledge of this game, what an awful generation of haters. #HTTR suckas…

I’m sure logicalvoice says now the Redskins will win the next 8 Super Bowls. I can’t believe how illogical his voice actually is. I have a hard time talking about the past greatness of the Cowboys because of recent times, no Romo isn’t the problem, and they’ve won 3 SUPER BOWLS SINCE THE REDSKINS WON THEIR LAST ONE!! By the way, I won’t believe RG3 is healthy until I see it on the field. The way his leg crumbled in that playoff game really made me feel bad for the kid. He shouldn’t have been on the field.

  91. bensstinkyfingers says: Mar 23, 2013 1:19 PM

Unfortunately for the Redskins and their fans, even if he does make it back to being close to what he was prior injury, it will take alot more than one “superhuman” to get them a Lombardi. I do hope he makes it back though, he is fun to watch play!

It’s funny to read these and discover how many grown men really hate that kid. It’s sickening to know that there are people out there that find pleasure in knowing someone is legitimately injured. And for those of you blaming this injure on shannahan, take this into consideration. Robert was injured on a designed pass, turned scramble. Against Atlanta where he was hit and receive a concussion? A designed pass turned scramble. Like any other young and inexperienced players Robert has things he has to learn to preserve himself, there’s no doubt about that. But to blame that knee injury on shannahan is blasphemy. Because let’s be honest, his acl was torn well before Seattle. I’ve played on a partial before, it is possible indeed. And yes I played qb. Was it shannahan a fault that he further injured it? Sure it was, but the initial injury was not. You can call Robert what you want, say what you may, but you will never be able to take away the fact the he was the single most electrifying player everyone Sunday in 2012. I think that’s why people are such doubters. Everyone is afraid of greatness if it isn’t a player on their favorite team. Peyton manning was hated outside of Indiana until he proved without a doubt that he was the best at his position in the world. Lebron James is hated now, and he is undoubtedly the best basketball player in the world. But don’t misconstrue my statement, rg3 is not great, yet. But I think the possibility is there and people just can’t stand it. The young man is a class act, let’s give him some type of respect, show some decency.

As far as you Seattle fans, and Russell Wilson. It’s funny how pre draft all you guys were all in on Matt Flynn. And how you guys worship the ground Carroll walks on even though he inherited one of the better rosters in the nfl. Anybody know Pete Carroll’s overall win/loss as a head coach? Lls he’ll never touch shannys accomplishments. He’s a gimmick college coach with a great nfl roster. Seattle has a boatload of talent, I’m not denying that. But what have you done with that talent? Beat my so called “seller dwelling ” redskins in a game that a one legged qb had you beat? Wow big accomplishment. Seems to me like rg3 isn’t the only one and done around here. Tell Carroll have fun with our offense and hopefully you guys are half as good as you say you are next year.

Nothing special about his arm and decision making and he’s just as fragile as Vick, much slower than Vick was at that age as well and Vick has never tore a ligament. Sorry but the future for this lizard tongue freak is not looking bright.

At the rate that RGIII is going, tearing up the cartilage in his knee (once its gone, it’s GONE), forget QB-ing an NFL team, he’d better start making plans to ride a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He should never have been in that wild card game, and should have been yanked at halftime for sure. I don’t say that as a Seahawks fan, but as a guy that suffers big time, with leg pain every day. I abused them early on and now they’re paying me back.

This smells like Ray Ray and “Deer Antler Spray”. First, it would be nice if the media would Google IGF-1 and learn that the spray does nothing. When used by athletes and bodybuilders it is a sub-Q injection. IGF-1 is a fragile peptide that will not last as a spray. IGF-1 provides very similar results to HGH it that it regenerates and grows new muscle but in a very short time period…to get full results of HGH you need to be on for a year…IGF-1 you only need to take it as a 4 wk cycle to start seeing results. Take Ray Ray for example his injury normally has a recovery time of 1 year…but the following week it was announced that he would be back in 12 weeks??? So doing simple math he did 4 wks on 4 wks off 4 wks on (which is a recommended cycle).

    Just something to think about…

Man, I feel like I’m on the show Gold Rush when I read the comments in Redskin articles. I have to sift through the dirt and crud in the comments section to find a quality post.

To those using the same talking point of “they are just trying to sell tickets blah blah”, the Redskins have never had a problem selling tickets, even back when we had Danny Wuerffel and Patrick Ramsey.

For me personally, if RG3 is ready for week 1, then great. If not, I’m comfortable with Cousins starting because he showed a lot when he had the chance. I’m sure the trolls hating here were also hating on the Skins when they drafted Cousins.

Face it haters, as decades pass and new eras begin, teams change. Did you honestly think that a team like the Redskins, one of the most historical franchises in the league, were going to be bad forever? All teams go through cycles. The Steelers were dominant in the 70s, but they were very mediocre during the 80s. They finally got to the SB in the mid 90s and lost. They didn’t win another SB until the mid 2000s. Don’t forget about the Patriots, they used to be the joke of the league back in the day.

It’s because every last one makes it to the “most commented” list, mostly due to jealous trolls who are so obsessed with logicalvoicesays that they come out the woodwork in droves to try to one-up his nonsense with drivel from the polar opposite perspective. Keep hating, fools! This man may make a lot of commercials, (again, you’re jealous) but he does his talking on the field. And no one has a logical argument against what his play says. He’s the future of the NFL, plain and simple. Have fun playing catch-up for the next decade! BTW for the many trolls that struggle with basic arithmetic: we traded TWO 1st-rounders and one 2nd. You guys take a little peice from an entire article, and trim it down to one sentence to make it seem like it was something else. Or, you take a tweet, and base it down to make it seem like something it isn’t.
