Dumervil will be first domino of veteran pass rushers

Early in free agency, several pass rushers who won’t be seeing the age of 30 any time soon landed contracts.  The older guys, however, have had a harder time finding new homes.

With Elvis Dumervil picking the Ravens, the dominoes will start to fall.

Actually, one of the dominoes already had been teetering, with Osi Umenyiora close to ditching the Giants for the Falcons.  (We’ve reported that will happen on Sunday or Monday.)  But Dumervil’s decision should spark a reaction that results in contracts for John Abraham, Dwight Freeney, and (eventually) James Harrison and Shaun Phillips.

Abraham or Freeney will likely join the Broncos, soon.  The Dolphins and the Patriots likewise have been sniffing around pass rushers, as have the Titans and Saints.

That leaves four veterans for five teams.  Which means that one or more of those teams will likely wait until the draft has come and gone before deciding to look for a short-term fix from the ranks of the NFL’s old timers.

  1. Dumervil was the stud available of the pass rushers on the open market, and the cap-strapped ravens scooped him up. What better front office is there! Honestly! Hah! I love it.

  2. I think you must be talking about the Bucs Florio! The fans here are crying for some sign that this team is interested in fixing the poorest pass defense in the NFL. Except for the Goldson signing , Dominik and company seem to be missing chance after chance to pick up any more veterans for the secondary. I hope there is some method to his madness. GO BUCS

You would say the same thing if the ravens signed Snow White ….you are an idiot homer….but so stupid you are funny…keep it up … I need a laugh.

  4. great signing. raVens needed another pass rusher and got a player better than they lost for less money. well done. cant wait to see whats next

  5. Dumervil gets a big new deal with the Ravens and the Bronco’s get schit on a stick.

    Horse face loses again.

  6. Once again the Dolphins will strike out. I’d rather have payed Dumerville the $35 million than a one year wonder. That’s what happens when you have a weak GM.

  7. Please doom WAS great in denver. He doesn’t get close to 10 sacks last year without the real deal Von Miller being doubled on the other side. Hes washed up just wait and see Baltimore fans. LMAO

  8. @milehigh

please, he’ll easily surpass 10 sacks because the “real” real deal Terrell Suggs (you know, the 2011 Defensive MVP) will be eating up double teams all day…

  9. The man coming off a torn achilles six months early then playing through a torn biceps as well? Admittedly he was an injured shell of his old self last season, but just wait til you see him healthy again. It’s BallSoHard time!
