Redskins, Antoine Winfield to meet

AP

The Redskins are slated to host former Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield on Wednesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

The Vikings released Winfield less than two weeks ago. The club is still in contact with Winfield, as are one or two other unnamed teams, per Rapoport.

The Redskins let go of veteran cornerback DeAngelo Hall earlier this month.

Winfield, who turns 36 in June, notched 101 tackles and intercepted three passes for Minnesota last season. His versatility and physicality have been among the traits that have defined his 14-season NFL career.

The Redskins, who are lacking their full complement of salary-cap space, have mostly re-signed their own free agents in 2013, but they did add former Buccaneers corner E.J. Biggers last week.

  1. If he doesn’t come back to my team, he should hold out for a team that will win now, like NE, not a rebuilding team with a QB that likely won’t be effective at the start of the season.

  2. Wouldnt be surprised if one of the other teams interested is the Raiders. Winfield fits the kind of corner Reggies looking for.

  3. Not a bad stopgap. Maybe they will explore moving him to FS like the Bucs did with Barber, Packers with Woodson, etc… We still need to find a legitimate, long term starter at CB opposite Josh Wilson.

  4. What’s with the Skins infatuation with Vikings defensive back castaways? First it was Fred Smoot and Madieu Williams, now Winfield. I apologize to Antoine for putting his name in with those two…

As dumb as every post you make is, this one made me laugh on several levels.

1st. It came from the biggest moron posting on this site.

2nd. You can’t even spell WINNING right, which explains why you are such a big Redskins homer.

3rd. Did I mention that you are a moron?

Top 5 QB’s in the NFL- Rodgers, Brady, P. Manning, Brees, Flacco, in that order.

Top 5 RB’s in the NFL- Peterson, Foster, McCoy, Jones Drew, Forte, In that order.

  6. E.J. Biggers should be starting for the Skins over a guy like this. Biggers is better than most people know; still don’t know why the Bucs let him go.

Maybe you missed the 1000 or so posts that states Winfield himself doesn’t want to play Safety? Think maybe he would have done this for the franchise he has played so long for instead of moving on to the Skins?

  8. Oh…

dont go to washington, you want a chance at a super bowl and that will not happen with plastic knee RG3

this from a fan of a team that has no Super Bowl wins haha, btw isn’t the same team plastic knew RG3 busted that long run and Dick Stockton…stated RG3 is gonna outrun everybody…also RG3 will be up in your hood this year so you can catch him live bustin another move on the Vikes D.

  9. LogicalVoiceSays: “WOW I’ve heard of him! He must be really good! He was in the pro bowl before! That’s why it’s a good signing! Who cares if he’s old and the Vikings don’t want him?! Our secondary will be better than the RAVENS! We’ll still have that over them at least!!”

Oh, wait, no you still won’t.

  10. What’s with the Skins infatuation with Vikings defensive back castaways? First it was Fred Smoot and Madieu Williams, now Winfield. I apologize to Antoine for putting his name in with those two…

smoot was a redskin before he was a viking.

  11. Ok Antione, put the stick to the vikes a little bit. They were dumb for dropping you, we know. But after your vacation PLEASE COME HOME! I WAS GONNA BUY YOUR JERSEY THIS YEAR! Even if it ends up being for only one or two more seasons!

  12. @ ingravin: DeAngelo Hall was just featured in the new Directv Genie commercial where the guy says “What’s more annoying then listening to DeAngelo Hall speak”……

  13. logicalvoicesays: I agree with what ad28bestever says about you but would add that you are a FANactical Idiot. However, he is off base with his own lists…..

Wouldn’t it be great if the comments made were constructively made with considered thought about team needs, cap considerations, players abilities or issues; whether about their own team or others?

  14. would love to see the skins get winfield. he played very well against them last year, looked like he still has some good football left in him.

Smoot was drafted by the Skins. What about Ced Griffin? Dou you even watch the Skins? I’ll take Winfield. Guy plays with a chip on his shoulder and ALWAYS finishes. Excellent tackler, ball hawk. WHISK…to the Skins

  16. Considering he is coming from the Vikings, you would think he would pick a prospective team that is less dysfunctional than the team he is leaving behind. Its hard to measure these things but the Redskins and the Vikings are about even in that regard.

  17. He mustve said forget ever winning a SB in his career if he signs with the Washed-up-ington Failed-skins

  18. Hello, everyone, in case you’ve all forgotten, the Skins were hit with an $18 million cap penalty this season. Whether it was fair or not isn’t the point. But it is what it is, so they’re trying to deal with it.

So, Shanahan is trying to get by with keeping most of the core from last year’s division-winning team while looking for some short term help in the secondary to tide them over until next year when they’ll have their full cap number back.

Winfield might be getting old, but he might be an upgrade over what the Skins had last year. If he can fit under the reduced cap number, that is.

It’s not like Dan Snyder is gonna jump in and give Winfield an Albert Haynesworth type contract!

Yeah, like he had a shot in Minnesota with that clown they have at QB.

mustve was a great choice of words btw.

  20. since the ravens are the only team in
maryland that gets the job done.this guy
visiting the deadskins just might be there answer
    ha hah ha….

  21. Winnfield sucks he is cheap and the skins cant afford anyone else Stop acting like he is so great. The skins will draft some corners and they will beat out Winnfield but he can mento.r a little.Smoot was a skin first andI wouldn’t be claiming Williams and griffin like they’re sogreat again we couldn’t get an entire new team in two years.Logic voice you are embarrassing to skins fans even though we like you’re enthusiasm it’s over th top

  22. Nobody flashes a more beaming smile after getting scorched on a 30 yard go-route. I’m sure “Mr. Snyder” will overpay for him and collect more Viking rejects in the secondary. Curious, this collecting of players not good enough to play for Minnesota’s garbage secondary

  23. I guess Pat Fischer was not ready to come out of retirement and play again. Are you kidding me, 36 yrs old and they are even thinking about him…..

  24. If Winfield is not good enough for the Vikings, then why are they still trying to re-sign him? Also, how did the Skins beat the Vikings? Vikes wish they had Cousins instead of pathetic Webb at QB!! Feel sorry for Peterson wasting his years there.

  25. Yes, Smoot was drafted by the Skins. But then he came to MN and was terrible for 2 seasons before going back to the Skins. So that’s Cedric Griffin, Smoot and Madieu Williams, a trifecta of bad when they left MN. Winfield doesn’t deserve to be grouped with these guys, but he’s not nearly the same guy he was a few seasons ago when he started getting hurt.
