The NFL is covering its bases for next year’s Super Bowl, conducting a simulation of electrical power demand in New York after the blackout in New Orleans plunged the Ravens and 49ers into darkness.

But while the league is taking their planning seriously, they’re also able to laugh at themselves.

According to Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal, someone doused the lights while Commissioner Roger Goodell made his opening remarks at last week’s owners meeting.

Those who weren’t given advance notice on the joke were surprised, but Goodell was laughing, letting everyone else in on it.

Of course, the lights were off for something less than the 34 minutes the Superdome went dark, and if it happens again in New York, no one will be laughing.
