Chargers to release Jared Gaither

As it turns out, Jared Gaither’s reprieve in San Diego was a temporary one.

According to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego, the Chargers have informed tackle Jared Gaither they plan to release him.

He’ll count $6 million against the cap this year, meaning they cut him for reasons other than financial ones.

Gaither’s now one of the new poster boys for the dangers of free agency, as he was one year into a four-year, $24.6 million contract. But instead of a franchise left tackle, they got an expensive tenant in the training room for their money, as he played just four games last year after signing that deal.

There’s a word for guys like Gaither. It often precedes the word cat and it isn’t kind.

People in Baltimore know him very well. No surprised there.

A little like buying someone else’s problems with a used car.
They didn’t Caveat their Emptor properly.

All the Potential, none of the Drive.

The guy is great when he is motivated. The only problem is keeping him motivated.

Talent isn’t the issue. Work Ethic is. No way a guy who is as talented as Gaither should be going on his 4th team and he’s still in his 20’s. The locker room disowned him and felt like he basically stole from him. Don’t know how another team could take a risk on this guy

At first, I wondered what KC did when he was released. He had a few good games for SD. He then got his contract, and poof, was done with his back spasms. Looks like SD got got.

Hopefully everyone learns from our mistake and this P.O.S. is blackballed from the league.

    Good riddance Big Lazy!

What’s sad is, when he felt like playing he would block anyone and anything the defense could throw at him. Could have been great.

But just as Ravens fans had warned us, he spent his time faking injuries after he got his contract.

Our O-Line is decimated but we could not have this cancer in the locker room. It would send the wrong message. A hard, but great decision.

When Jared wants to play….he IS a player. But, most times he looks for excuses to sit it out and collect the cash. Too bad to what “could have been.”

    Just another freeloading slob.

Everybody else knew to stay away, not the Chargers though.

    SMH.

Remember the Charger fans who were pleased they had put one over the Chefs?

Yet another reminder – pay attention to the Ravens’ personnel decisions. They are usually correct.

He is a user and a sponge. He gets a contract then mysteriously gets hurt. He has done this numerous times now. I wonder which will be the next team to be suckered in by this loser?

That cap hit hurts – but it may be worth the $6 million to send the message that your cap hit won’t guarantee you a roster spot.

I think he’s headed to the Pats…..well isn’t every FA?

ravens fan here. so sorry for all the charger fans who had to suffer through having gaither on your team. the bolts are far better off not having that turd on your team

  22. thestrategyexpert says: Mar 27, 2013 12:53 PM

Thanks San Diego for making everybody else’s dollars slightly more valuable, it is appreciated as always!

  23. National Fanatic says: Mar 27, 2013 12:53 PM

A Bad Back + Full Body Cramps + strained groin = unemployed. Bye Bye 2012 injuries. And I don’t think you’ll be in the NFL any longer (get feathery)

  24. srcnsd says: Mar 27, 2013 1:07 PM

For that five game stretch during the 2011 season, he was the best lineman in football….he was literally perfect in pass protection and run blocking. He stonewalled Terrell Suggs alone all night and aided to the Chargers’ embarassing the Ravens. It’s hard not to be excited after that kind of performance.

    But we were fooled. Badly.

If he could stay motivated he would be a Top 5 (if not Top 3) tackle in football.

    What a waste of talent.

AJ Smith is with the Skins now. He should bring Gaither with him.

Cutting Gaither gives the Chargers an additional $500,000 to spend! Dude was a cancer

  32. sdstate1000 says: Mar 28, 2013 12:23 AM

AJ only paid Gaither $200,000 for those 5 games and Gaither got a way with a lot of holding he wasn’t an All Pro. The real reason Chargers won is Phillips, VJ, Floyd and Gates all returned to the line up. Jared got paid last year and another $6 MIL to go away. AJ was a total fool, clueless who to give a huge contract to and not to. Going to love watching Shanaham and AJ butt heads
