As it turns out, Jared Gaither’s reprieve in San Diego was a temporary one.

According to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego, the Chargers have informed tackle Jared Gaither they plan to release him.

He’ll count $6 million against the cap this year, meaning they cut him for reasons other than financial ones.

Gaither’s now one of the new poster boys for the dangers of free agency, as he was one year into a four-year, $24.6 million contract. But instead of a franchise left tackle, they got an expensive tenant in the training room for their money, as he played just four games last year after signing that deal.
