We thought the Cowboys would be making moves on Wednesday and they haven’t disappointed.
Quarterback Kyle Orton restructured his contract to make cap space for linebacker Justin Durant and now the team’s made another move to create room for the addition of safety Will Allen. The team announced that they have released wide receiver Anthony Armstrong, a move that cleared $630,000 from the payroll than can now be applied to Allen’s deal.
There may be more moves coming for the Cowboys, who have also visited with guard Brandon Moore recently. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that tackle Doug Free is expected to restructure his contract. That move (or Free’s outright release) has been expected for a while since Free is set to count $10.02 million against the cap with a base salary of $7 million a year after his right tackle job turned into a time share with Jermey Parnell.
We’ll see if Free winds up restructuring -- pushing today’s cap problems into an upcoming year -- or if it’s just a pay cut that allows him to stay on the roster, but the Cowboys would get some much needed cash either way. If they can reach agreements on new long-term deals for Tony Romo and Anthony Spencer, the Cowboys would have even more cap space at their disposal. For now, though, they’ve got just as much as they need.
