Osi Umenyiora agrees to deal with Falcons

The long-awaited deal is now done: Osi Umenyiora has agreed to terms on a contract with the Falcons.

Atlanta and Umenyiora, a free agent defensive end who has been linked to the team for weeks, reached a deal on a two-year contract today, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports.

When Umenyiora said last week that it would mean more to him to win a Super Bowl with the Falcons than his Super Bowls with the Giants meant to him, it strongly suggested that Umenyiora had his heart set on getting something done with Atlanta. Now something finally is done.

The 31-year-old Umenyiora has played his entire 10-year career with the Giants. He’s coming off a disappointing season in which he recorded 6.0 sacks, but in Atlanta he’ll be counted upon to replace the departed John Abraham, who had a team-high 10 sacks for the Falcons in 2012.

  1. How long until he complains the contract he signed isnt for enough money again? 2, 3 weeks?

  2. Falcons fan…good to hear we’re not on the hook for more than 2yrs. I’ll wait for more details – Good job Dimitroff for what the market had to offer.

  3. Had some great years with the Giants but spoiled his later years with his constant complaining about his contract. Great at knocking the ball out of the QB’s hand but doesn’t play the run well at all and is a situational player. Plus he’s 31. Sayonara–he’ll realize the Giants were the best thing he ever had.

  4. About time this thing got done. I was wondering what the holdup was and why it was taking so long. Glad it’s a done deal and now it’s time to get a Corner and some Linebacker help. Hopefully the dollars make sense because there are still holes everywhere on this defense. Can’t wait to see what TD has up his sleeve with 11 picks. I think they will be moving around to get a couple of pieces

  5. Giants fans are gonna miss ya, Osi.

Thanks for two championships and some of the best moments in franchise history.

Good luck in the ATL and stay healthy! Go get ’em.

  6. It’s a good fit. He’ll get decent production for three years then the relationship will become distasteful. Dimitroff knows how to build a regular-season winning team (dome team), but does it translate to the playoffs? Nope.

  7. Thomas D is the most overrated Gm around he gets more credit than he deserves. Besides Ryan and turner for two years and trading for the no brainier in T Gonzales . Every other move that he has made has been a bust almost every draft pick a bust most of his F.A. Signings are bust but everyone praises him just because he comes from the Bellick tree

  8. Just saw the deal is 2 years at 8.5 million with a max value of 12million, including 5million guaranteed. Per ESPN

  9. bad news for the eagles…now the giants will be forced to get a defensive end that can actually play. I’ll miss his little twitter fits.

  11. It’s a good move in the right direction. Still need more pieces. Rookies aren’t going to cut it. Need to bring back Abe. Let Grimes walk, if he still can.

  12. This guy is so overrated. Falcons fans,, don’t act like this is an upgrade over Abraham.

  13. John Abraham could be back, Denver doesn’t want him anymore maybe because he wants so much ca$h like Dwight Freeney but a slight hometown discount could be in the future. The Falcons still want a prime DE in the draft, maybe make a Julio Jones type trade-up in the 1st round to land one if there’s a run like in 2008 when Ryan Clady, Jeff Otah & others were being eaten up & Atlanta had to trade up to select Sam Baker late in the 1st when he was a projected 2nd round pick. The 30th pick plus the second rounder plus a 4th to move into the top 15. Roll those dice Thomas Dimitroff.

  14. The first time I heard Osi Umenyiora’s name uttered during a game I wondered what possessed the announcer to say “I see human urine”.

  15. I’ll never forget the 6-sack game vs. Philly or the strip-sack, forced fumble, fumble recovery for TD vs San Fran. One of the best plays I’ve ever seen!

  16. Question I have is…what can you do on a Falcons front that isn’t as talented as all the guys you had as teammates in NY. You’ll miss having Tuck & JPP getting extra attention.

  17. the falcons replace an old DE with another. do they really think they are just one Usi and one Steven Jackson away from a super bowl? why don’t they try drafting a d-lineman who can sack the QB? or is dimitroff content to build his roster from other team’s drafts?

  18. It’ll be nice to see the Giants go to the Super Bowl again either this year or next while Atlanta and this clown watches from some seedy Redneck Georgia bar.

  19. Love how every giant that leaves the team now is overrated or “not that good” in the eyes of giants fans. I guess now you guys are seeing what the rest of us saw…a bunch of overrated players got lucky winning 2 SBs, especially the second one, so many breaks…

  20. Thanks, and good luck Osi. You were a one-trick pony, but it was one helluva trick. I’ll never forget the strip of Rodgers in the NFCCG 2 years ago. Thanks for the memories for us Giants fans, and enjoy your homecoming.

  21. FAILCANTS are still losers…they could have the best Defense of all time and would still lose in the playoffs…they are soft….fact…can’t win big games….all hat, no cattle….

  22. Thanks for all the great memories osi. You were a great giant. Best of luck in Atlanta. They’re getting a helluva player. It won’t hurt them for you I show off your two Giant pieces of bling so they have something to shoot for

You’re a moron if you think it doesn’t taake luck to win a Superbowl. Look at the Ravens. One 4th and 29 play, they’d be sitting at home watching the Superbowl.
Now on the subject of Osi, he thinks he is a lot better player than what he is. He didn’t have to carry a full load most of his time here in NY, and he play with a lot of great talent. Strahan was lined up on the other side for years. He is now going to be looked at as the #1 guy. Do you think the Giants would have kept him off the field if they thought he was better? Tuck had a bum shoulder and they used him more than Osi. So congrats Osi on the payday, but his best years are behind him.

  24. Winning a Super Bowl with the falcan’ts is going to be a tall, tall order. So yeah, it would be a significant milestone if the falcan’ts were to win a Super Bowl, problem is that that won’t happen, not this year, someday perhaps, but not during his football career.

    ________

Six sacks against the best QB your franchise has ever had. 12 in the game for the Giants against the Eagles.

I guess you have memory loss, or just arent a real fan. Which one is it?
