Report: Patriots will sign Michael Jenkins

Christian Ponder, Michael Jenkins AP

Sometimes, it seems like Bill Belichick does unusual things just to prove that he’s smarter than other people.

According to Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com, the Patriots are signing former Vikings wideout Michael Jenkins.

The 30-year-old Jenkins can’t really run, and caught 40 passes last season for the Vikings, who weren’t exactly overburdened with depth at his position. He has size and good hands, but lacks the ability to get open.

It’s doubtful Jenkins got much beyond the minimum to sign, which makes it a free look at a moderately productive veteran.

    But can he cheat?

  2. ijahru says: Mar 28, 2013 2:13 PM

Last year the Patriots took a look at Anthony Gonzalez and it didn’t hurt them so why not give Jenkins a look.

    Why would he have to?

Maybe they thought he was Randy Moss

    Helmet cam!

Pretty good player. He will do well with Tom Brady.

  7. axltcu says: Mar 28, 2013 2:20 PM

Normally he wouldn’t make the team, but this year their depth at WR is so atrocious he might actually make it.

    LOLOLOLOL

  9. captainvilfo says: Mar 28, 2013 2:23 PM

I bet if the Ravens signed him you would be saying it was a steal

  10. dbellina says: Mar 28, 2013 2:23 PM

He may not be able to run but he’s a hell of a blocker.

  11. bobg0722 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:24 PM

Finally. This is the guy who is going to get Welker’s production. Not Amendola. Patriots have a habit of picking up bum receivers who are past their prime or were high draft choices who never matched their potential. Galloway, Holt, Gonzalez, Lloyd to name a few. Add this one in that column.

  12. vikings1packers0 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:25 PM

He’s a class act and he will lead in the locker room and in the game. The only losers here are
    THE VIKINGS!

Yet another ex-Viking who could easily get a ring by leaving my squad.

    Smart pick up.

name the WR who caught matt ryan’s first Td pass

  16. flash1283 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:32 PM

They do this every off season, sign a bunch of WR and then cut them before the start of the season.

  17. rc33 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:33 PM

Pittsburgh fans have some nerve poking fun at this…or anything other teams are doing…after the off season they’re having. In addition, they’re apparently they’re 3rd from the bottom in cap space, thus my advise would be to not draft anyone next month. And by all means, enjoy those upcoming “showdown” games with the Cleveland Browns this season.

  18. grogansheroes says: Mar 28, 2013 2:34 PM

He’s a camp body, nothing more. Would be extremely surprised if he makes the roster.

  19. gochargersgo says: Mar 28, 2013 2:35 PM

    Molasses Mike strikes again

  20. bonato55 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:35 PM

They made bad WR pretty good and mediocre WR like this guy great…

  21. surfinbird1 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:37 PM

Great! with a nickname like “molasses Mike” I got goosebumps. Belichick shopping Walmart bins again,,Rollback. We’re in worse shape that before free agency.

  22. j98me2 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:47 PM

This is just a camp body signing. Need a lot of bodies to fill out the training camp roster. If he signed at the minimum he probably doesn’t even count against the cap since only top 53 salaries are included.

Should be a lot more of these between now and the start of OTA’s

  23. deliveredbysherpa says: Mar 28, 2013 2:48 PM

Did they think this was former Dallas cornerback Mike Jenkins?

  24. filthymcnasty1 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:50 PM

It will be interesting to see what he can do now that his production isn’t tied to the noodle armed Christian Ponder.

  25. leftcoaststeel says: Mar 28, 2013 2:56 PM

once again you give the Pats way too much credit.

  26. bigj7769 says: Mar 28, 2013 2:59 PM

The cheating comments are OLD!! U r a moron if u don’t think other teams do it. Why do u think coaches cover their mouths when the talk into headphones? So people can’t see what they r saying. That’s why sideline signals are so extensive, misdirection. People are dumb

  27. swagger52 says: Mar 28, 2013 3:01 PM

Who cares if he can’t get open or catch…Jenkins plays chess. Bellichek wants somebody with which to play chess.

  28. anarchopurplism says: Mar 28, 2013 3:08 PM

    The pieces are in place…..

  29. snaponrules says: Mar 28, 2013 3:16 PM

Speed means nothing to a vikings receiver. Once you hit the 7 yard mark you are outside of ponders range anyhow.

  30. jimmyt says: Mar 28, 2013 3:19 PM

    U r a moron if u don’t know what cheating is.

  31. homelanddefense says: Mar 28, 2013 3:24 PM

Do you fellas actually think these spygate jokes are funny anymore? Its just tiring.

They are just as original and witty and Bengals in prison, Vikings on the partyboat, all Davis corpse jokes.

  32. purpleguy says: Mar 28, 2013 3:25 PM

Class guy, strong blocker, great route runner — all of which can be timed with a sundial however.

  33. parvis33 says: Mar 28, 2013 3:27 PM

I’ll bet Brady is giving BB the same look Marge gave Homer when he got her a bowling ball for her birthday

  34. rc33 says: Mar 28, 2013 3:32 PM

Gotta love a guy accusing someone else of being a moron while he’s doing the “U r a…” thing. I mean, that’s perfect. Public schooling, by any chance?

  35. tim8450 says: Mar 28, 2013 3:37 PM

When Belicheck hires a couple of wiley veterans at a position, and they are unlikely to make it through camp, this usually means that he will draft that same position and is using veterans as on-the-field coaches for younger players. They need someone to bring Jones (their addition from Buffalo) and their draft picks up to speed. Dude can likely run rings around any of you jamokes.

Can’t you be more positive? We’re supposed to be ambassadors for our team.

  37. metitometin says: Mar 28, 2013 4:11 PM

Yeah, I’ll just second that the cheating comments are pathetically tiresome. Roger Goodell sent that memo about videotaping to EVERY team in the NFL. If the Pats were the only team videotaping, why did Roger Goodell send that memo to EVERY team in the NFL??

  38. purplengold says: Mar 28, 2013 4:12 PM

    Good riddance.

  39. sschmiggles says: Mar 28, 2013 6:22 PM

Not sure where the camp body comments are coming from. Right now this guy would be at least #3 wr.

It’s because they’re a bunch of pathetic losers that are insanely jealous. And yes, they are dumb.

  41. jcphitman says: Mar 28, 2013 7:04 PM

Solid fourth WR. Maybe helps on special teams or for short catches? He did decent in MN last year for his limited abilities.

  42. vikesfansteve says: Mar 28, 2013 7:58 PM

That dudes almost as dumb as ponder this.

  43. j0esixpack says: Mar 28, 2013 8:02 PM

Meh – doesn’t hurt to have an extra body in camp.

    They need some deep speed.

  44. dyna42 says: Mar 28, 2013 8:52 PM

Not a flashy guy…but he can be clutch. In Minnie, he had a few…and I mean few clutch catches. Good go to guy when the others are double covered. Good Move Pats, from a vikes fan….

Michael Jenkins = Jabbar Gaffney role

  48. bcgreg says: Mar 29, 2013 9:57 AM

    No, jimmyt, you’re the moron.

  49. purpblooded says: Mar 30, 2013 3:21 PM

He makes 3rd down catches, but the Vikes didn’t want to pay him millions. If BB got him for the minimum, he’s worth it.
