Seahawks agree to terms with Tony McDaniel on one-year deal

Miami Dolphins v New York Jets Getty Images

The Seattle Seahawks have added yet another free agent to bolster their defensive line.

Former Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Tony McDaniel has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Seahawks a league source told PFT. He joins defensive ends Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett as defensive linemen added to Seattle’s roster this offseason.

McDaniel’s addition could very well end any chances of Alan Branch returning to Seattle. Branch had spent the last two seasons in Seattle playing next to Brandon Mebane on the interior of the Seahawks defensive line. McDaniel could very well replace Branch in that role for the Seahawks next season.

McDaniel has been largely a rotational player for the Dolphins as he has only started two games over the last four seasons. McDaniel’s best season with Miami came in 2010 when he recorded 36 tackles, 2.5 sacks and four passes defensed.

I don’t think I’d consider the acquisition of a guy 95% of us hadn’t ever heard of would be considered part of a “Dream Team”. And of the 5% that say they know him, I say 95% of them are lying.

For those without any real knowledge of the game, who keep comparing the Hawks to the Eagles, I would remind you of two words. First word, Russell; second word, Wilson. The Eagles didn’t have him, don’t have him now, won’t have him. Instead you have a QB who once sniffed at greatness (in Atlanta) and hasn’t seen it since.

But we also have quality, top to bottom, great players committed to bettering themselves.

Plus we have one thing in Seattle, that Philly doesn’t have and isn’t likely to acquire anytime soon. Positive support for our team.*

Man the idiocy on this site is becoming comical!!! The hawks could give a poop less about what any of you think. You are all truly MORONS!! But I can see how anyone that watches the NFL could be envious of the Seattle Seahawks and their once in a generation quarterback Russell Wilson. The scarier part is he is matched with a great coach and genius GM!! These guys are gonna have their way with this league for the next 5-7 years wether you idiots compare them to the eagles or the local high school team and there isn’t a dang thing you all are gonna be able to do about it!!! SO DEAL WITH IT HATERS!!!! Welcome to the dance mr McDaniel!!!

    GO HAWKS!!!!

  17. dennisatunity says: Mar 28, 2013 5:16 PM

It’s only the media that’s calling Seattle a Dream team. Nobody on the Seahawks team has ever mentioned it. Besides that, with a mantra of “Always Compete” all players know they can be replaced tomorrow so you none of them are talking about a Dream Team. And just because we pick up a player that is at best a back-up DT, that doesn’t mean we are trying to buy a team. We are trying to build some depth on the line. It is odd that it warrants a big headline on PFT.

As a Seahawks fan that lives in Philadelphia I agreed with everything you said until the part about positive support and Santa Clause thing.
As much as it pains me to something good about the Eagles, you can NEVER question their support for the team.
Their passion is always mistaken for negativity, trust me it is not that at all.
And also stop with the Santa Clause thing, they threw snowballs at a drunk guy on the field. And the batteries were at J.D. Drew.

Guy up there says we’re not better than the Niners. Maybe we aren’t, but since Frisco only won the division by half-a-game (because you couldn’t beat the lowly Rams), I’d say were close. You edged us by 1-TD in the Stick, which doesn’t say much about your being superior.

Then there was that game at the Clink (Ahem, cough, clears throat). 42 – 13. Woulda been even farther apart if we hadn’t let you score a TD in the closing minutes, to save some face. We’re good that way, willing to let others retain a shred or two of dignity. Not like the classless scum of SF.

seahawks19081- I appreciate the clarification. My knowledge of those incidents was second hand, so I’ll be happy not to repeat the blunder. But there are many incidents that I’ve read about, seen vids of, heard about on sports radio, etc., that do not paint Philly in a positive tone concerning the Eagles.

Booing McNabb on the field and chanting for Vick, was one I remember. McNabb played his heart out for a team, whose fans booed him at the draft. He played a game with a broken foot or ankle, and that didn’t count for much with the fans.

In Philly, the fans attitude seems to be, “win US a Superbowl, and then maybe we’ll cheer FOR you. Maybe.

I have yet to see any seahawk fan say we are going to be a dynasty, you probably saw 1 person say that, and just decided to rant and rave about it…This is the NFL, its huge because no matter what, each year, everybody has hope for there team, everybody….and there are certain people like you, who can’t lets fans be excited, you have to attack others teams, go talk about your team somewhere, let us enjoy our offseason, I never see hawk fans going on 9ers articles to talk crap, or any other team, just get over w/e ur so annoyed about and move on

And what is your favorite team Scmems07? 9ers im guessing?

I just don’t get why people have to throw there 2 cents in about everything the seahawks do, last offseason nobody posted a dam thing on seahawk articles, and now everybody has a opinion, we are obviously doing something right…so ill take that

  27. seaeagle707 says: Mar 28, 2013 6:11 PM

We won the NFC West five times during the last decade or so. Is that “winning something”? The 49ers team that is currently occupying the Stick, has won as many SB’s as we have. With the exception of possibly a janitor or grasscutter, there is no one there now, that can call themselves a 49er from the SB-winning team.

  28. checkdanews says: Mar 28, 2013 6:11 PM

Things Iv seen said on this page:

We are trying to build a dream team: Your words, not ours…

We signed abunch of free agents: We signed 3 free agents, including Mcdaniels (Harvin was a trade)

The Harvin Trade: We gave up what was basically equal to moving up 5 spots in this years draft, So what would you do? Hope we get some talent at #25? Or get a Proven star, who AP called “the best football player he has ever seen” & Our GM said no to the deal at first, so its not like we are just going all in, this was a calculated move, by a very talented front office.

Comparing Vick To Wilson: Just laughable, all I have to say about that.

And the SF vs SEA argument: Anything any of us say about either side is opinion, and none of us are professional NFL writers, or anything remotely close, so we can argue…but whats the point?

What I am trying to say is c’mon people give it a rest. During the Holmgren era we were known as that alright team full of mostly good character guys….and thats what we still are, but now we got some attitude. We are building a identity, and if this was happening to your sports team, you would enjoy it as much as us….quit trying to poop in our ice cream lol

I really want to know why everyone is saying dream team. Might as well call every good team a dream team then. Makes no sense at all. You’re just wasting your time saying that you idiot trolls. Not sure how acquiring a pass rusher and d line depth gets that kind of talk. This team is actually good unlike the eagles. Russell Wilson and Vick are completely different. Wilson is actually a legit franchise QB. Look at Vicks stats again and tell me how is even in discussion for a franchise guy. That’s hilarious. This is a well rounded talented young team who actually wants it unlike the eagles. Russell Wilson has more work ethic than anybody in the game. Want proof? He’s a 5’11 QB drafted in the 3rd round who started as 3rd string and won the starting job. He tied the rookie TD record and had a 100 QB rating. That is something no one has ever done as a 5’11 QB. Obviously he’s doing something right. How will he not only improve? You all are stupid and jealous. Keep talking while Russell is in California working out with his receivers. Dream team? LOL. REAL TEAM

Awesome. Seattle signs 3 players and trade for 1, folks start talking about a “dream team.”

Seattle has D-line depth issues. They are being addressed. Seattle has WR issues. They are being addressed. Expect O-line and a Leroy Hill replacement in the draft.

This stuff is easy when you know a team, it’s really hard when you’re just making up comments to have something to say.

  39. brtdud7 says: Mar 28, 2013 6:49 PM

  40. trollhammer20 says: Mar 28, 2013 7:15 PM

The “Dream Team” Eagles became the height of irony because it was a player on that team that gave them that name, and then they failed spectacularly.

The people trying to attach “Dream Team” to Seattle are superstitious ‘Hawk haters who think that calling them that will give them the Eagle mojo from that season.

Good luck with that one. You’re going to need it.

schmitt is right, the ram’s aren’t lowly, there a dam good team, that with a few more pieces could be a even tougher matchup for the 9ers and my hawks..the last thing any nfc west team needs to do is underestimate the rams….the whole division looks to be getting better, I think the Card’s will be better, I just don’t know how much better yet, I am holding back judgement, because I don’t know enough about the coach, all the changes on the defense he has made, and what there plans are, but I am just guessing right now that they are gonna be quiet a bit better, and if not this coming season, probably the next

And the Seahags wouldn’t have made the playoffs if not for the refs against GB. And that loss the Niners took in Seattle came a week after we handily beat the Patriots, a week after they shredded the Texans. Are either of them bad teams?

It’s hilarious that you pin your season to beating us ONCE in the last four meetings and even more ironic that you dare call Niner fans classless having Pete “The Cheat” Carroll as your coach.

With that said, we all need to relax. Most especially the dream team fella on here @seaeagle707. You ask us not to boast about our 5 Super Bowls then you bring up a 42-13 REGULAR SEASON win. I understand the excitement about the “big” win, but who made it to the super bowl and who’s season was over? What about the year before?

…looks like Branch saw stars in his eyes on the money side. Had he looked for a big contract after 2011 season he might have gotten it. Last season, though he was a stable player was nothing “special”.

Branch firing his agent had more to do with Branch thinking that he is worth more than anyone will pay him.

  45. cliffordc05 says: Mar 28, 2013 7:28 PM

Some of the comments are truly imbecilic. This is the third free agent signed by Seattle. It is more than I expected but it is probably more than Seattle management expected to sign prior to free agency. None of these players have received a deal that is even remotely comparable to what Philadelphia was handing out two years ago.

As for Pete Carroll buying his way to a championship caliber team…… you are correct sir. Of course that is the same thing every other team in the NFL is attempting to accomplish.

@Ccsjcsr and Geemoney: The Eagles “Dream Team” was them picking up a bunch of big name free agents, and handing them “Monster” contracts. Trying to build an entire roster through free agency like the Redakins, and Cowboys have been known to do. The Pete Carroll era Seahawks built almost there entire team through the draft, and the waiver wire. We signed Miller, and Rice to larger contracts 2 years ago, and that’s about it. Don’t get mad we draft awesome gems in later rounds, haha. Now we have a Championship caliber team we are filling some holes for very cheap. Harvin was a trade, so that has nothing to do with free agency. Your comments where funny, lacking football knowledge, but funny none the less.

Flynn was a big pickup last year suppose to be the face of the seahawks for years to come paid alot of money for him and did that matter? No, pete and co. may pick up a bunch of free agents at what a year, two years for minimal money but that does not mean they ever even see the field unless they prove ot in mini camps practice and so on not even PH is a sure thing till pre season is over. Seattle didnt blow the bank on a bunch of big names, and outside of PH the contracts are small enough for a sample with option to buy long term. The eagles didnt do that so any comparision is BS

  53. rilessea says: Mar 28, 2013 7:59 PM

Not building a dream team, just a very good one with some solid depth at nearly every position now. Haters will always hate and make baseless comparisons, but the NFC West is about to be the most ballin’ division for quite some time. Here we go!

Haha..And your best moment was beating us in a regular season game..You guys really are the lamest fans in the NFL Id rather have 5 sb and be a worldwide known team then one with one from some lame ass hole in the corner of the country…owned again..keep try8ng “little brother”

  61. gmbrakr says: Mar 28, 2013 8:50 PM

People are talking all the trash because they can’t stand to see the Hawks as Super Bowl favorites and #1 in the power polls. Teams change from year to year 9er fans, and instead of losing key pieces of our team we added. You barely won the division last year and had the offensive playbook been opened up earlier, frankly, you wouldn’t have stood a chance. Hope you’ve enjoyed the last couple of years because your so called “reign” of the NFC West is pretty much over.

  62. rilessea says: Mar 28, 2013 8:51 PM

Lol find a life NorCal brosef.

For the record, I live in SF. You guys really need to stop pooping all over your streets. It ain’t right.

  63. beastmode5150 says: Mar 28, 2013 8:57 PM

It’s ok mafia, we know that you truly know that the hawks have a better team. Talk all the crap you want about Super Bowls from when you and your mom started trying to figure out “which one is dad” as those have been irrelevant for 2 decades. Next year should be fun, I love how the niners play when they show up, very physical like our hawks, we just happen to have smashed you guys the last we played. Have fun rooting for the flat billed squidward.

  64. decon49 says: Mar 28, 2013 9:30 PM

    42-13= shehawks superbowl

  65. true9erfan66 says: Mar 28, 2013 9:55 PM

    @liddogg33
Um ok and you think the niners give a damn what you think? Or any team for that matter second off why is Wilsion the once in generation player? Cam,keap & RG3 weather you want to admit it or not are all the quote next generation of QB’s and regardless of what you think Keap is the best of them period. He has better accuracy bigger, faster with the better vision as a pure runner. Wilsion is more like Vick in size and won’t last full seasons. Ask any expert or coach who doesn’t have ties to 1 team or the other and they all tell you keap is the 1 they want his field vision his accuracy on deep balls and overall is supior to Wilsion sorry these are facts check them. Plus super bowl wining coach Brian billick and gruden both went on record saying for basically reasons I just stated they would go with keap. Plus you factor in keap did all this in just 10 games Wilsion was not good at all first about 8 games keap never did that even when the niners lost to Seahawks keaps stats were still real goo than finally. We go with your coach and GM being best crap well first off its the niners GM that made things work out to we’re last year We had 12 picks this year 15 oh and he is 2011 executive of the year. Than harbaugh has had 2 seasons in NFL with 2 division titles trip to super bowl. Carrol had 2 former tries as NFL head coach and sucked as matter fact the coaches who took over year after he was fired took his players to playoffs so don’t say lack of talent. Than he has had 3 season 1 division title at 7-9 record might add only 1 wining season and never went past division round in playoffs so you say we are idiots and you can’t stand to read comments well your uneducated no knowledge of the game homer self makes it hard for me to continue on here. Now before you try and respond and dig your hole worse everything I stated on here is FACT! Look it up and even the stuff about keap bigger, stronger faster & better accuracy is fact check the stats and combine stats out performed what Wilsion did same with what I said about niner coach and gm that’s stuff is fact the only thing you can say I was giving opionion on was Wilsions durability but because of his size and how he moves out of pocket history doesn’t lie he should struggle with injury. So maybe before you proclaim Wilsion carrol and your GM as the best maybe umm yaa they should actually win division more than 1 time every 3 years and oh you think hawks are sonawesome for getting harvin and Avril ect. Ok well that’s great but your whole secondary,Wilsion & Wagner just to make a few all need new contracts and with Sherman claiming he is best CB than he will want revis money so now u have Wilsion as a 20per year qb and Sherman as a 16per so good luck u ate up all extra cap space u coulda rolled over now u have only 6 mil left. So ya sounds like the GM and coach are truly looking towards teams overall success doesn’t it. Lol you will sign Wilsion,Sherman,Wagner and Thomas rest of your top players are gone. Check it out unless Wilsion is willing to take about 12per and Sherman about 8per and Thomas about 8per u won’t sign the other guys numbers don’t lie Wilsion 20per Sherman 15 per and Thomas at 10per it’s done so enjoy harvin I will take the sure handed very competive and never migrained out boldin cause that allows us to sign are big 5 we got coming up in A. Davis, iupati,A. Smith, keap and crabs see that’s how an organization is ran sign your guys the great ones than draft well. Tell your GM to call Baalke he will gve him some pointers again this has all been checked with Espn stats and info means its fact while the gruden and billick comments were made on nationally televised programs. Your truly a real fan that also looks up his information NINERPRIDE forever and always.

  66. themackstrong says: Mar 28, 2013 10:16 PM

The haters coming out and trying to call this team a dream team and point to Philly – all I gotta say is increase your knowledge. This team’s core was built the draft and the other players were found in Caroll/Schneider’s were overhaul one of the weakest rosters in NFL 4 years ago. Last year we were one defensive stop away from the conference championship as the youngest team in NFL. Face it Seattle Seahawks are now a powerhouse and I guess our fans will just have to deal with envious ones hoping for us to fail and trying to take shots. I don’t know what will be tougher, our defense or offense. McDaniel is depth – We have Mebane and two other guys McDonald & Howard that can also step into Branch’s old role if he doesn’t come back.

  67. themackstrong says: Mar 28, 2013 10:23 PM

Oh yeah I respect Rams fans and their roster…I think everyone in NFC West does…The ones I hate are those 49er and their bandwagon fans. Probably only started following football 2 years ago and have no football knowledge expect “we’re going to smash them” or “your team sucks”. They forget that for 10 years they were in the basement and it was Rams, Seattle and Cards who lead. I honestly see the Rams being our competition for the division these years. I think those two teams make the playoffs from the west.

  68. allidoiswin55 says: Mar 28, 2013 10:52 PM

Any article about the Seahawks brings out the haters in full force. Lol sure fire way to get views.

Sorry nfl fans your excuses are running out, this team is and will relevant for years to come. They built through the draft and signed people to show me deals. All of which allow them to have a deep team and cap space to go after their own and possibly improvements upon their own.

Get your act together Pete and Schneider have just plain simply been smarter than other coach and GM combinations for years now and it’s finally paying off with how they turned over this roster soo fast.

We don’t hate or have time to hate other teams, we’re just excited to have an extremely talented, motivated, and promising franchise. Sorry that upset you.

  69. seahawks4lyfe says: Mar 28, 2013 11:16 PM

I guess those Superbowl wins didn’t help them win against the Ravens……and the only reason why you were in the Superbowl is because you played a banged up Atlanta… a team that barely beat Seattle in the last seconds of the game

  70. liddogg33 says: Mar 28, 2013 11:47 PM

Best moment??? Nah, just a really really really fun moment. Anytime you can beat a team 42-13 I would say it was a good moment!! I’d say the BEST moment was the day we drafted our real deal franchise quarterback!!! That day was just awesome because it was the day Russell showed everyone in the country the difference between him and Kap!!!! And you know it!!!!

    Go HAWKS!!

Im guessing that same statement can be said for your love life….filled with excuses and dust

That’s not what your mom, your wife, your sister(s) and your hot neighbor that lives in Madison Park says.

You really wanted to make it personal didn’t you? But then again all of you bandwagon Seahawk fans do.

I’ve been a Seahawk fan longer than you and I’m tired of you newbies making us look bad. Shut your mouth and let the team play.

Norcal lives on the internet, waiting patiently for any story that has anything to do with the Seahawks. Then all the razor sharp wit comes out, and at the end of the night………………………………..well, nothing. This loser has no life or a single meritable opinion. Jealousy always speaks louder than confidence

  73. tobis81 says: Mar 29, 2013 4:30 AM

Norcalmafia is some 49er loser boy who wastes his time posting in the seahawks section of bleacher report. No lie the putz is on like every article. Over in the new cliff Avril article he’s talkin bout him and some chulos rippin down a 12th man flag

  74. jonkchar says: Mar 29, 2013 5:28 AM

  75. tobis81 says: Mar 29, 2013 10:51 AM

Waxthat: now we can’t talk when we win 42-13 but u guys can run off at the mouth when u beat us 13-6 and every other time when u have beaten us in the past? Ha u r the one who needs to give the crying a rest. U won the division by a half game and lost the Super Bowl. U didn’t win the Super Bowl so what difference does it make? If u wanna keep talking bout the 1990s b my guest

  76. tobis81 says: Mar 29, 2013 10:59 AM

What’s Norcalmafia? Is that some name u and ur chulos call ur selves over in Japantown? Your drivel would be far more compelling with the addition of punctuation. When you complete a rant, please use a period. Just like this.
In addition, when referencing your fine young qb, spelling his name accurately, would not hurt. I am sure you can find a used edition of Hooked on Phonics to study. Education is the great equalizer.

  78. ateeezzz says: Mar 29, 2013 2:55 PM

I am a Seahawks fan and have been since their inception. Rooted them on through the good times and bad times as well. I will continue to do so, but without the name-calling, bad-mouthing, crap some of you post here.

Of course we are excited for the Hawks. The media folks are the one’s annointing us with a Superbowl. We have high hopes for the coming year based on last years performance and the off-seasons moves, as I am sure the Rams and 49er fans do for their team. But slandering each other as fans isn’t going to win any games.

We should be respecting each others talent and competitiveness. No NFL game is a sure thing. (Don’t I recall the Hawks beating the defending Superbowl champ Saints in the play-offs after posting a 7-9 season?)

The NFC West should be super competitive this year and my hope is the Hawks finish on top, but I realize the 49ers are tough, as are the Rams. I won’t even write off the Cardinals.

But I see no gain using 6th grade neener-neeners with the mistaken thought that it somehow helps my team or proves I am a fan.

  79. steevano says: Mar 30, 2013 7:12 PM

its amazing the ignorance, hatred and lack of football knowledge here. for the slow of mind, through free agency the hawks are adding depth not trying to buy a dream team. the NFC WEST Is hands down The best division in football… St. Louis is solid and getting better, Seattle is flat scary and SF is too. Any of those 3 if put in any other division. would be a good bet to challenge for or win. outright. period. Odds are the road to the Super Bowl will be a stones throw from the Pacific Ocean…

  80. oprk says: Mar 30, 2013 9:22 PM

It’s anyone’s division next year, though I don’t understand how trying to cap arguments by referencing Super Bowls won 30 years ago has any bearing on 2013. Both teams are excellent from the front office, to the coaches, to the personnel, and as the guy above me says, I wouldn’t count out the Rams from holding their own either. Why are there even this many replies for a DT that’ll play less than 50% of snaps? Let the season play itself out on the field, rather than in your message box.

  81. dirtbernard says: Apr 2, 2013 4:09 AM
