Dolphins put John Jerry on notice about his weight

Dolphins guard John Jerry is getting a simple message: If you want to stay on this team, you’d better keep your weight under control.

That’s the word from Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, who says that when offseason work begins, he wants to see Jerry in good shape — which hasn’t always been the case in Jerry’s career.

“It’ll be interesting to see,” Philbin said, via Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. “I know the big thing we said to him when he left is we want to see how much you weigh when you come back for the offseason program.”

A third-round pick of the Dolphins in the 2010 NFL draft, Jerry is listed at 6-foot-5 and 345 pounds. He had his best year last season, starting all 16 games, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll be a starter again in 2013, especially after the Dolphins signed another guard who’s good enough to start, Lance Louis. Jerry could either be an in-shape starter for the Dolphins this season, or a fat guy looking for work elsewhere.

Following the Bryant McKinnie plan. Hope he isn’t blowing through his money like McKinnie, who is pretty much broke while still in his playing days.

Dolphins guard John Jerry is getting a simple message: If you want to stay on this team, you’d better keep your wait under control.

Even my 4th grader knows the difference between weight and wait……LOL

    Are you serious, PFT?

    Hello, Jerry.

Similarly, if you want to stay on the writing staff, you’d better learn how to spell “weight” …

  6. cakemixa says: Mar 29, 2013 2:24 PM

Did this guy really just spell it “wait”? I hope he doesn’t get paid to post stories here.

@daniz34 I deal with that on PBT all the time!!

Do you how hard it is to control your wait’er. My wait gets out of control all the time. I find myself walking around at work just waiting. I know I should be doing something but I just cant keep that damn wait under control.

How long do we have to weight for an interesting story?

  11. mrgroovesd says: Mar 29, 2013 2:44 PM

    Weight…what happened now?!?

I hate when I weight in line at walmart…but it was to buy a scale to measure my wait

I was wondering when the John Jerry article would come out. I seriously doubt he is retained. Philbin is really trying to get smaller, quicker lineman. Jerry is not that.

It’s interesting to me how many out of work English teachers there are out there, trolling the internet to see how many mistakes they can find, then displaying their wit in their replies. Did anybody NOT know what he meant? Sheesh.

He has talent but almost no motivation or drive. He showed up at camp close to 400lbs last year. He could be a decent guard or tackle but if he just wants to be lazy, eat and spend money then he needs to go. They should weigh (wai?) him before he unpacks his bags and if he is an ounce over 35o cut him on the spot and call him a cab.

Don’t blame the writer. NBC Sports is just like most other media organizations that are saving money by cutting non-essential staff, like copy editors and web masters, leaving the writer to post their own stories after writing them.

  21. thewizardofbs says: Mar 29, 2013 3:21 PM

He obviously meant weight, what he was saying is that if Jerry doesn’t control his weight he will be waiting for another job or perhaps waiting tables in a sports bar.

It’s Sad that you have to tell a professional athlete to report in shape.

  26. dolphincritic says: Mar 30, 2013 11:57 PM

I’ll bet you a pizza that Jerry is overweight when he reports to camp! We have a good OL coach so maybe Jerry will get into shape! Of course, he might buy a popcorn shop in the off season too!
