Fred Davis stays with Redskins

Fred Davis AP

In the end, Fred Davis decided to finish what he started.  At least for one more season.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Davis has signed a one-year deal to remain with the Redskins.

Davis also had an offer from the Bills.  He had planned to visit the Jets, but Davis canceled the trip on Thursday, focusing on the offers from Washington and Buffalo.

Washington’s franchise player in 2012, Davis tore an Achilles tendon in the seventh game of the season.  This year’s deal likely is worth much less money, especially since the Redskins have limited cap space, thanks to the $18 million that the NFL stole from the team last year and this year for treating the uncapped year like it was actually uncapped.

Comments from Redskin fans should be interesting considering more than half yesterday were saying Davis was not that good and goodbye Fred. I’m sure they will change their tune today.

Smart move by Davis. RGIII will give him more of a chance to sign than whoever the bills stick in at QB. Have a great year and make the millions next year.

This deal is a win win win for everyone involved. Davis gets a chance to redeem himself with a full healthy season and a new contraa new potential better contract next year. Rg3 gets his favorite target back. Davis doesn’t have to deal with the dysfunction in NY or the unfunctional qb less buffalo.

I don’t know why this is news this team is garbage. The best thing that ever happened to this team was RG3 now he’s done after making him play on a bum knee. Better hope Kirk Cousins really is as good as they are leading everyone to believe.

I would like to take this time to welcome the Redskins to there usual spot in the NFC East:

A bunch of Redskins fans were saying things like: Let him go, he’s not worth it/ He can’t block/ We are better off without him/He sucks/ He is still a big pothead/ He’s one drug test from a suspension/ He is only good until someone touches him, he goes right down. Its too bad that he chose to go back, fans from another franchise were ready to give him a big welcome.

Florio, I appreciate the fact that you are one of the few writers who is willing to come right out and say the league stole cap money from the Skins. What really makes me smile is that Shanahan and Allen have quietly gone about the business of keeping their division-winning team mostly intact in spite of the unfair punishment.

  48. champ1118 says: Mar 29, 2013 9:37 AM

Finally the folks at Redskins park “get it.” This signing makes sense for both sides. A one year deal lets the Redskins see if Davis is fully recovered and capable of being who they think he can be. If he falls off production wise or gets injured again, they can let him walk. From Davis’ standpoint his next long-term deal will be his best chance at a big payday. I bet no team was offering him the type of money he expected due to the injury and his off the field issues. So, he’s taking a gamble on himself like Laron “Hulk” Landry did. The difference being that he’s an offensive player and chemistry means a lot more. Faced with the prospect of catching balls from RGIII (whom he already was developing a good rapport with) or whoever they have throwing the rock in Buffalo now, I bet he figured he has a better chance of parlaying the one year deal into a big pay day by staying in D.C. They will either pay him, franchise him, or let him hit the market. Smart move by everyone.

Good. No matter how much it looks like I’m the first one to post my thoughts, I never am. But, point being; before everybody goes off in Davis needing to prove himself, it should be noted that Davis averaged 13.6 yards per reception last year, 3rd in the league among tight ends (with 20+ receptions).

The season before, with Rex F. Grossman throwing to him, he averaged 13.5 yards/reception (6th among TE’s) and was on pace for a 1300 yard season before getting suspended.

Additionally Davis has ranked 3rd among tight ends the last two years in touchdowns/first downs per targets: meaning that every time he touches the ball he has an extremely high chance of converting it into a big play.

That said, Davis really needs to show that he can stay on the field for a full season before the organization talks anything long-term.

Fred is an average te at best, he’s injured, and he runs his mouth off and spends his offseasons in court. I wanted him to go to Buffalo and disappear forever. I hope they gave him the least amount of money possible and told him he had to earn a roster spot.

  77. stevietimmy says: Mar 29, 2013 10:55 AM

Am I a lifelong, die-hard Bills fan (yeah yeah, I know)? Yeah. All valid points that others have brought up in previous posts about this… why go somewhere that doesn’t have a starting QB, a new coach, no playoffs in thirteen years. All true.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Although integrating more diversity into the playbook of late, Shanahan is of course a disciple of the West Coast Offense… not exactly an ideal system for a TE who wants to catch and run all day. Sure, a lot better than playing for Mike Martz though.

Secondly, everyone talks RG III. Remember how his rookie season ended? He now already has had complete tears of the ACL and LCL (I believe). Not a good way to start your career in a violent sport, ESPECIALLY for someone who utilizes his legs as much as he does. Not to mention almost getting his head knocked off a couple of times. So this begs two questions… 1) How long will RG III be around for next season? Season after that? 2) With all of this in mind, you KNOW that Shanahan will do everything to protect his bread and butter which means yes, more time spent for his TEs staying on the line to block.

Of course, Kirk Cousins is still better than what is currently up in Buffalo.

So yeah, stay with la familia as you recover from your own wounds. Not a bad decision, but also not a slam dunk (in my mind) like others would make it out to be.

  78. rtant2013 says: Mar 29, 2013 10:57 AM

As I said yesterday I was on the fence with Fred. But I figured this is what would happen. I mean there’s not much risk there for the Redskins because of the value of the one year deal. And Davis could break out and have an excellent season and make this look like a steal by the Skins front office. Let’s be honest though, this is the move he should have made all along considering what he got paid last year and played less then half the season. If anything though, it just adds for another target to RG3 or Cousins.

  79. ziplock10 says: Mar 29, 2013 10:58 AM

This is a league of contrary-isms! A team that spends must suck it up and find gold in the crap pile!

THIS YEAR SPEAKS OF THE FRONT OFFICE AND THE SHANNY’S

I’m just putting it out there!

The season ending record will decide if the Shanny’s are that good and if the Allen is up to snuff!

  80. obmig says: Mar 29, 2013 11:02 AM

What rules are there to break in terms of salary cap space in a year where there are no written rules pertaining to the salary cap? Are they being punished for not listening to an email or a phone call? I just want someone to explain why they think the Skins broke rules that year, and what rules they were, instead of just proclaiming that it happened.

  81. dirtydrynn27 says: Mar 29, 2013 11:03 AM

So you’re saying the league better look into what the Redskins are doing with this year’s contracts to make sure no further salary cap cheating is going on.

Donks under Shanahan fined draft picks and $$ for violating the cap during their 2 Super Bowl years.

Redskins under Shanahan fined cap space for ignoring repeated memos from the league regarding going to far with cuts in the uncapped year.

That’s a long history of cap cheating. Chances are good if the league looks into this year’s work by Washington that they’ll find more.

Do you know what collusion is? You state “rules” were broken when rules did not exist b/c 2011 was an uncapped year due to no CBA which has binding rules. Furthermore, the NFL mgmt council approved the restructured contracts the ‘Skins and ‘Boys floated, then in turn penalized them for it. The Redskins??? Don’t they need a quarterback to be able to throw to the tight end? Oh I guess you still have cousins until the 3rd or 4th game of the season when that great field and genius of a coach you have will finally end his career as well……GO COLTS!!!!!!!!!!

An your jokes hold know bearing against the current SB champs . Your team is so bad that if they do beat an op posing team that team is automatically entered for the SB facts look it up past 4 years . An trying to compare teams isn’t even fair what has your team done sences 1996? Lol nothing. But being u like to joke here’s one for you when is the last time the Redskins won a super bowl? Or better yet a freaking playoff game ??? 06? Lol now go sit down in your corner an play with logos this is the big boys table

All the cap space in the World would not help that sorry team.

    —————-

Yeah, they really suck, having come in last place in their division last year.

  98. boogerhut says: Mar 29, 2013 12:40 PM

Boo hoo. Sounds like south park in here. They took our cap! 2 billionaires piss off 30 of their peers by going back on a verbal/handshake agreement between gentlemen and look what happened. The did it to themselves. Why do you think Snyder and Jones are the only ones NOT whining like a 2 year old at wallmart? Moving on…

  99. whodat11985 says: Mar 29, 2013 12:42 PM

    Oh!!!!! Big Surprise!!!! not…

Everyone in the world saw this one coming. Lets put the options together shall we:

New York Jets: Mark Sanchez runs into his own player and fumbles the ball. It would be a hit or miss for Fred in New York because the Quarterback is under so much pressure mentally and physically that Mr. Davis would simply never get the ball. Not to mention, they dont have a running game at all, so the scrutiny would fall on Fred for something stupid like bad blocking for the halfbacks.

Now for the funniest comparison ever:

    Buffalo or Washington

    Lets see:
With the redskins you have one the best up and coming Quarterbacks in the league in RG3. He also has Alfred Morris, who proved last year that the dude was underrated in the draft. Not to mention he is playing for A hall of fame coach in Shannahan.

Buffalo: Quarterback???? Oh thats rights, they have Travaris Jackson… watch out everyone… the Bills will win the superbowl this year… not so much. They have an unproven NFL coach in Morone and their defense last year was suspect at best and overpaid. The only good thing going for the Bills is their running game with CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson… but that may not even be that great considering the loss they had to guard Levitre.

At the end of the day, Fred chose to stay with a young quarterback, a hall of fame coach and a city that actually attracts people to it. Sorry Buffalo, as a western new york resident I would love to see great players come here but we simply are not an attractive area and our front office certainly doesnt show that they are actually trying to change that perception.

hopefully this fills your belly and puts you to bed. Had there been an actual rule in place
    a) Daniel Snyder being an owner would have known about it
    b) it wouldn’t have been unknown to the NFLPA
    c) the contracts would not have been approved by the NFL as all contracts must be.

Roger Goodell bent us over, and but good. that being said Shan/Allen (no, you’re thinking of Van Halen) seem to be doing everything right with the cards they were dealt.

  101. wheeln69 says: Mar 29, 2013 1:07 PM

It really amazes me how all the Skins haters are bashing Florio for speaking the truth…the league (insert Mara) stole money from them – plain and simple.

First of all, ALL contracts have to be approved by the league, and every contract doled out by the Cowboys and Skins (oh, by the way other teams did the same thing but don’t play in the same division (insert Mara) and did NOT receive harsh penalties, so obviously there wasn’t a problem with the structure of the contracts.

Secondly, let’s pretend for a moment that there might’ve been a problem with the contracts, why did the league (insert Mara) wait until the following year AND on the eve of the Free agent signing period commencement? Shame on the league (insert Mara) for even having a buffoon (insert Mara…again) like him head up the Competition Committee?

Hahaha, we beat your silly team this year! Howbeit that you won the SB.

Jayballin25 We know that the Ravens are the SB Champs and how much smarter you claim Ravens fans are,Blah Blah Blah…..

One thing is for certain,With all of the talent subtracted from this team,I guarantee they will be garbage in 2013!!!!

One more thing…..Why are you sooo concerned about a team thats not even in Baltimore`s division. If you were as smart as you claimed,You would be concerned with your teams losses and whats going on in your division/Conference……Baltimore minus Ed Reed,Paul Kruger,Antwan Boldin and Ray Lewis just to name a few=No Superbowl in 2014 and No playoff appearances either……….

  105. toonloonboon says: Mar 29, 2013 1:59 PM

The league can do whatever it wants in disciplining franchises. It’s a private organization, and the union signed off on the agreement. Time to let it go.
    ———

they did. they won their division in the first year of their cap penalty.

When Russell Wilson was asked which team was his favorite growing up (in Richmond, Virginia), he said that he didn’t really have a favorite. When the interviewer probed further, Wilson admitted that he liked to watch the 49ers once in a while. No mention at all of his “home team”, not so many miles away in D.C. Hmmmmm……..

Not this one or anyone I know. You really got your pulse on the Skins fan base huh?
Fred is an average te at best, he’s injured, and he runs his mouth off and spends his offseasons in court. I wanted him to go to Buffalo and disappear forever. I hope they gave him the least amount of money possible and told him he had to earn a roster spot.
    _________
Weird, because “this one” and most of the Redskins fans commenting here seem to disagree with you. I can understand the lingering resentment towards him for the 2011 suspension, Williams went through the same thing last year before solidifying himself as one of the best young tackles in the game. However if Davis hadn’t been injured last year, he would have similarly erased all doubt about his ability to be a hard worker and team player.

Moreover, he has been to court one time in his life, and I don’t think being extorted really defines him as a problem-child.

As for being an “average” TE, he was 3rd and 5th among TE’s in yard/catch in 2012 and 2011 respectively. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the second most productive tight end in the league in terms of first downs/TDs per times targeted, and 11th among all pass catchers in the NFL.

However, I do hope he uses 2013 to really earn a long-term roster spot. Most importantly, this is a one-year deal, and I think most Washington fans would much rather have at least one year of inexpensive Davis than shell out big bucks for a new guy or spend a draft pick on a TE capable of starting this year.

I’m not really sure what your point is. A lot of kids root for the most exciting teams at the time. While Russell and I were growing up, Washington was pretty awful, and between Young/Rice and later Garcia/Owens, San Fran was consistently dynamite.

Robert Griffin grew up in Texas during the Aikman/Emmit/Irvin years, but was still a Broncos fan. So I’m pretty sure your point says nothing about nothing.

Yes and no. I’m pretty happy with where the Skins are right now, but I can’t say I wouldn’t be happier if they had had the cap room to sign at least one top-tier free agent like Quin, Goldson, or Vollmer.
