Osi Umenyiora calls Falcons the most talented team he’s ever seen

Falcons Umenyiora Football AP

In Osi Umenyiora’s 10 seasons with the Giants, they had a winning record seven times, made the playoffs five times and won the Super Bowl twice. But Umenyiora says none of those Giants teams has the talent of the Falcons team he just joined.

Umenyiora said he hopes the veteran leadership and Super Bowl experience he brings will be the difference for the Falcons this year.

“A lot of times, being able to get to that game or win that game is not even about the coaches or the organization,” Umenyiora said. “This team is the most talented team I’ve seen in my life, probably. But it’s not going to be about coaching. It’s going to be about what the players are able to do, and you need that veteran leadership. You need guys who have been in those games and can tell you about exactly what happened.”

The Falcons were close but not quite good enough to get to the Super Bowl last season. Umenyiora believes he can make this the year they get to the top.

I know people will think he’s only saying that bc he’s there but this offense is really sick. Def a better offense of any of his Giants teams. Arguably the best off in the NFL right now….. If ur a realist.

If I was being paid millions by the chiefs or browns, they would be the most talented teams I would have ever seen too. Funny how money changes a perspective.

  4. ravenmomma says: Mar 29, 2013 7:09 AM

Most talented team he’s seen in his life?? Matt Ryan has ONE playoff win in his career and is overrated. The Falcons are a good team but far from the most talented team.

  5. spideysdog says: Mar 29, 2013 7:10 AM

good luck Osi. there’s a couple teams on the left coast that beg to differ. getting Gonzalez back for another year was big for this team, but Osi isn’t that big, if any, of an upgrade over Abraham.

in my book, the Falcons made a lateral move and are coming in about on par with last season. just a year older.

Seattle was 38 seconds away from dismissing you last year and the FortyWhiners did dismiss them. Both teams made major upgrades this off season, and the draft hasn’t even happened yet.

Osi, Ryan and Gonzalez walk in to a bar….
to watch the Hawks and Whiners in the NFC championship.

…..this falcons team that hasn’t sniffed a Super Bowl since 98′ and last season won their first playoff game since 2004? Thanks for your time with the Giants, but the back-handed compliments towards your former team just shows the bitterness of an athlete who is on the downside of his career.

  14. whatjusthapped says: Mar 29, 2013 7:36 AM

One year from now, Osi will better understand the difference in QB play between Eli and Matt “I choke every year in the playoffs” Ryan.

In the meantime, he can enjoy his money because he effectively traded championships for Benjamins.

  15. clownsfan says: Mar 29, 2013 7:37 AM

All that “talent” and they BARELY made it out of the 1st rnd of the playoffs. SEA & SF will be duking it out for NFC supremacy for the next 5-7 yrs.

  29. pologroundsvet says: Mar 29, 2013 8:15 AM

OK. Enough Osi talk on the Giants tab. He gave us good years and all he had in him when he was on the field for us, so Thank You and Good Luck unless you’re playing us. But let’s move on please. We’ll forgive you the distractions you caused as you complained about a contract that you were grateful for when you first got it.

  30. cameron poe says: Mar 29, 2013 8:26 AM

Wow for such a terrible choker hack team the Falcons certainly are garnering a lot of hate from fans of teams that claim they have nothing to worry about. Remember folks he said “the most talented team”. Just because a team is talented does not necessarily mean it’s the best team. It just simply means the players on the team have the potential to play better than anyone else. But, as we all know the problem with potential is you have to actually live up to it.

It’s easy to understand why Umenyiora is so impressed with the Falcons talent. He’s coming from a team that was never even the best in its own division.

Good for Umenyiora that he doesn’t have to get embarrassed twice a year by RG3 any more. Now it will just happen to him in the playoffs if the Falcons can get that far.

  37. flipola says: Mar 29, 2013 8:41 AM

Osi, we all know this is just to try to get on the organization/fans’ good side. But it needn’t be said, it’s such obvious BS that your little plan might backfire and have an opposite effect.

Hey Osi- Giants fans all over the world respected you…until today! A little bitter that you couldn’t beat out Tuck or JPP for more playing time perhaps? So if you went to a team you will start on, what does that say about it’s defensive line?

  45. jerseyshoregiant says: Mar 29, 2013 9:13 AM

One thing Atlanta fans are going to realize quickly is that Osi really really loves to hear himself speak.

  47. mavajo says: Mar 29, 2013 9:36 AM

NFL rankings for the “super talented” and “arguably best in the NFL” Atlanta Falcons offense in 2012:

8th in total yards (Giants were 14th)
6th in passing yards (Giants were 12th)
29th in rushing yards (Giants were 14th)
7th in points per game (Giants were 6th)

Per FBO, which attempts to take opponents into account:

12th in overall offense (Giants were 11th)
10th in passing offense (Giants were 11th)
29th in rushing offense (Giants were 5th)

So yeah, let’s just pretend that the Falcons are “arguably” the best offense in the NFL because they signed a 30 year old running back and Gonzales is another year closer to 40. Let’s also pretend that the Falcons offense is somehow leaps and bounds ahead of anything the Giants have ever had while Osi was there.

Never mind that last year was supposedly a down year for the Giants and the year where the Atlanta Falcons offense “arrived” — even though they were statistically neck and neck. And at least according to one metric (FBO), the Giants offense was actually better than the Falcons last year.

NOTE: Not a Giants fan. Just tired of the ridiculous Atlanta nonsense. Falcons are a team that’s achieved nothing, but it’s fans demand that we all respect them because they managed to win 13 games a couple times. Wake me up when you win more than one playoff game.

  52. gamustangdude says: Mar 29, 2013 10:13 AM

calm down, calm down. This is just one guy’s opinion. Everyone has one. Flacons have a lot of talent, however that doesn’t mean that they are the best team. Talent doesn’t win games, teams do. Falcons can have all the talent in the world, but untill they start winning playoff games, they’ll never get that respect.

    ———————————————–

He’s not the first player to say this and will not be the last. WE ALL know that if the situation was reversed, he would be saying the same thing about the Giants. With that being said, let’s be REALIST, just like you stated above. Realistically, you can’t claim anything at this point, as it is the offseason (REALISTICALLY!!!). Secondly, as some have already posted, this Falcons team may have shown some sparks by being in the playoffs but have not really shown anything as they have not won anything lately. And even if their offense may, and that is a BIG MAY, be one of the best, it isn’t going to do jack if their defense ain’t you know what (REALISTICALLY!!!). Third, and lastly, I really don’t expect any positive comments from Osi towards his former team as their breakup was not necessarily done amicably.

So bottom line, thanks for the services, good luck in ATL, but this is a non-story, for Giants fans.

5 years ago(2008) – The vikings and panthers were considered the most talented teams (in the nfc)… now they’re barely even considered contenders.

Do you really think San Fran will have the cap room to pay for all those all-pros and pro bowlers ?
Once Justin Smith retires – expect San Fran’s defense to drop out of the top ten. Seattle keeps throwing away 1st rd picks for diva receivers – expect that to catch up with ‘em.

And @axespray your comment is just foolish. Seattle traded one first round pick for Percy. So I wanna know how they keep trading first rounders for divas???? Like they even need a 1st. The whole team is pro bowlers that were found in the 2nd round and beyond.
Plus Percy wont have any attitude here and if he did Pete will not tolerate it. Just shut your stupid jealous mouth up and learn something.

Turns out Osi is a little scared. He turned down more money from NYG to play for the Falcons. That tells me all I need to know about him and his comments. He is going from a team that offered him more money, got him two SB rings, and that he can’t crack the starting lineup for….to go to “the best team he has ever seen” that has won one playoff game in a decade and he will start for. What a brilliant judge of character. Maybe Shady McCoy was right about him all along.
