Osi Umenyiora calls Falcons the most talented team he’s ever seen

AP

In Osi Umenyiora’s 10 seasons with the Giants, they had a winning record seven times, made the playoffs five times and won the Super Bowl twice. But Umenyiora says none of those Giants teams has the talent of the Falcons team he just joined.

Umenyiora said he hopes the veteran leadership and Super Bowl experience he brings will be the difference for the Falcons this year.

“A lot of times, being able to get to that game or win that game is not even about the coaches or the organization,” Umenyiora said. “This team is the most talented team I’ve seen in my life, probably. But it’s not going to be about coaching. It’s going to be about what the players are able to do, and you need that veteran leadership. You need guys who have been in those games and can tell you about exactly what happened.”

The Falcons were close but not quite good enough to get to the Super Bowl last season. Umenyiora believes he can make this the year they get to the top.

  1. I know people will think he’s only saying that bc he’s there but this offense is really sick. Def a better offense of any of his Giants teams. Arguably the best off in the NFL right now….. If ur a realist.

  2. If I was being paid millions by the chiefs or browns, they would be the most talented teams I would have ever seen too. Funny how money changes a perspective.

  3. Most talented team he’s seen in his life?? Matt Ryan has ONE playoff win in his career and is overrated. The Falcons are a good team but far from the most talented team.

  4. good luck Osi. there’s a couple teams on the left coast that beg to differ. getting Gonzalez back for another year was big for this team, but Osi isn’t that big, if any, of an upgrade over Abraham.

in my book, the Falcons made a lateral move and are coming in about on par with last season. just a year older.

Seattle was 38 seconds away from dismissing you last year and the FortyWhiners did dismiss them. Both teams made major upgrades this off season, and the draft hasn’t even happened yet.

Osi, Ryan and Gonzalez walk in to a bar….
to watch the Hawks and Whiners in the NFC championship.

  5. haha, better check your blood suger becuase it sounds like your glacoma gone nuts there Osi because, when have falcons been the top in offense, let alone top 5 in offense???? numbers do not lie. and quit with these “greatest show on turf 2”,,,,semi great at best

…..this falcons team that hasn’t sniffed a Super Bowl since 98′ and last season won their first playoff game since 2004? Thanks for your time with the Giants, but the back-handed compliments towards your former team just shows the bitterness of an athlete who is on the downside of his career.

  7. One year from now, Osi will better understand the difference in QB play between Eli and Matt “I choke every year in the playoffs” Ryan.

In the meantime, he can enjoy his money because he effectively traded championships for Benjamins.

  8. All that “talent” and they BARELY made it out of the 1st rnd of the playoffs. SEA & SF will be duking it out for NFC supremacy for the next 5-7 yrs.

  9. Yeah, now all they need is a big game quarterback not some Payton Manning level choke artist and a competent head coach, and they might have a shot at actually accomplishing something.

  10. I don’t think he will change much! He’s just replacing another good DE in Abraham! Now had they kept Abraham and brought him over too…then that would make an impact. Right now, is just addition by subtraction

  11. I’m glad my team plays in the AFC. The NFC is stacked with contenders. Seattle, San Fran, GB, Atl, plus the Saints, NYG, Redskins, and Bears will be in the mix

  12. Osi is another name for one-trick pony. Only a pass-rusher. Easiest way to get this one trick pony off his game: Run to his side!

  13. OK. Enough Osi talk on the Giants tab. He gave us good years and all he had in him when he was on the field for us, so Thank You and Good Luck unless you’re playing us. But let’s move on please. We’ll forgive you the distractions you caused as you complained about a contract that you were grateful for when you first got it.

  14. Wow for such a terrible choker hack team the Falcons certainly are garnering a lot of hate from fans of teams that claim they have nothing to worry about. Remember folks he said “the most talented team”. Just because a team is talented does not necessarily mean it’s the best team. It just simply means the players on the team have the potential to play better than anyone else. But, as we all know the problem with potential is you have to actually live up to it.

  15. They have a good offense but it’s not even the best in their division, and I don’t know if Osi has looked at thest of their D-line but…yeah…

  16. It’s easy to understand why Umenyiora is so impressed with the Falcons talent. He’s coming from a team that was never even the best in its own division.

Good for Umenyiora that he doesn’t have to get embarrassed twice a year by RG3 any more. Now it will just happen to him in the playoffs if the Falcons can get that far.

  17. Osi, we all know this is just to try to get on the organization/fans’ good side. But it needn’t be said, it’s such obvious BS that your little plan might backfire and have an opposite effect.

  18. I hit the report comment on the first comment on accident, because I wanted to reply to it so hastily. I realized I didnt have my glasses on yet. Sorry.
Anyway,,,, THATS WHAT BEEN WRONG WITH THE GIANTS IS OSI’s impression on the rookies and leadership within the team. I hope the old man owner, in all his endeavors, alas has a huge cheese farm. They will need it.
    Osi-N-Kroy

  19. I hate these comments, every big name player does it in some respect when he joins a new team, i didnt like it when wallace was talking up tannehill when he arrived in south beach, its just way too phony…..what are they gonna say…”this team is probably gonna suck, i just signed here for the money”

as of this past season and the season before, id take abraham over osi all day everyday

  21. Hey Osi- Giants fans all over the world respected you…until today! A little bitter that you couldn’t beat out Tuck or JPP for more playing time perhaps? So if you went to a team you will start on, what does that say about it’s defensive line?

  22. One thing Atlanta fans are going to realize quickly is that Osi really really loves to hear himself speak.

  23. NFL rankings for the “super talented” and “arguably best in the NFL” Atlanta Falcons offense in 2012:

8th in total yards (Giants were 14th)
6th in passing yards (Giants were 12th)
29th in rushing yards (Giants were 14th)
7th in points per game (Giants were 6th)

Per FBO, which attempts to take opponents into account:

12th in overall offense (Giants were 11th)
10th in passing offense (Giants were 11th)
29th in rushing offense (Giants were 5th)

So yeah, let’s just pretend that the Falcons are “arguably” the best offense in the NFL because they signed a 30 year old running back and Gonzales is another year closer to 40. Let’s also pretend that the Falcons offense is somehow leaps and bounds ahead of anything the Giants have ever had while Osi was there.

Never mind that last year was supposedly a down year for the Giants and the year where the Atlanta Falcons offense “arrived” — even though they were statistically neck and neck. And at least according to one metric (FBO), the Giants offense was actually better than the Falcons last year.

NOTE: Not a Giants fan. Just tired of the ridiculous Atlanta nonsense. Falcons are a team that’s achieved nothing, but it’s fans demand that we all respect them because they managed to win 13 games a couple times. Wake me up when you win more than one playoff game.

  24. This guy isn’t even a good DE to begin with. Average at best and was made a fool of on National TV 2 when he played the Redskins.

  25. calm down, calm down. This is just one guy’s opinion. Everyone has one. Flacons have a lot of talent, however that doesn’t mean that they are the best team. Talent doesn’t win games, teams do. Falcons can have all the talent in the world, but untill they start winning playoff games, they’ll never get that respect.

    ====================================

I’m enough of a realist to know that they don’t even have the best offense in their division. The Saints get that honor and the Falcons will be looking up at them once again this year. Your daddy’s back on the sidelines, boys.

  27. Its ridiculous how scared most of you are about your horrible teams. Falcons are going to stomp on everyone this year.

  28. Hey Osi, go tell the Ravens that as they are shining their rings. Talk is cheap when a super bowl and then talk and let the debate begin until then it means nothing.

  29. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Keep talking Osi, hope we play you this year. Good luck actually having to play every down and put your fragile body into run stopping.

  30. Matt Ryan and Chad Penninton will always have one thing in common. While Ryan’s arm is stronger than Penney’s it’s still weak enough to be exposed against playoff defenses. Good luck winning a Super Bowl Atlanta!!!!!

  31. They’re the second best team in the division. Falcons feel like the Eagles right now….paper champions.

  32. NOTE: Not a Giants fan. Just tired of the ridiculous Atlanta nonsense. Falcons are a team that’s achieved nothing, but it’s fans demand that we all respect them because they managed to win 13 games a couple times. Wake me up when you win more than one playoff game.————————————————————— Seattle fans, same basic message goes to you as well.

  33. Giants fan here who agrees with osi. But, you need more than talent to win bowls. You need heart. Lets hear him compare those factors

  34. On the PTF chart Umenyiora is #25 and Jackson is #30. Why are you guys getting so exited – these are middle of the road type signings.

Personally I don’t see Umenyiora being much an upgrade from Abraham – but we will see.

    ———————————————–

He’s not the first player to say this and will not be the last. WE ALL know that if the situation was reversed, he would be saying the same thing about the Giants. With that being said, let’s be REALIST, just like you stated above. Realistically, you can’t claim anything at this point, as it is the offseason (REALISTICALLY!!!). Secondly, as some have already posted, this Falcons team may have shown some sparks by being in the playoffs but have not really shown anything as they have not won anything lately. And even if their offense may, and that is a BIG MAY, be one of the best, it isn’t going to do jack if their defense ain’t you know what (REALISTICALLY!!!). Third, and lastly, I really don’t expect any positive comments from Osi towards his former team as their breakup was not necessarily done amicably.

So bottom line, thanks for the services, good luck in ATL, but this is a non-story, for Giants fans.

5 years ago(2008) – The vikings and panthers were considered the most talented teams (in the nfc)… now they’re barely even considered contenders.

Do you really think San Fran will have the cap room to pay for all those all-pros and pro bowlers ?
Once Justin Smith retires – expect San Fran’s defense to drop out of the top ten. Seattle keeps throwing away 1st rd picks for diva receivers – expect that to catch up with ’em.

  37. stop it osi. he might be talking overall team but NOT defense.. noones defense is stopping the strahan, tuck osi, antonio pierce, cwebb (primed) days..just ask tom brady.

that said i miss strahan still!!!!

  38. LOL okay Osi. Who names their kid Osi? His mom must of thought that was the best name she had ever seen. Atlanta is lacking a ton of talent.

And @axespray your comment is just foolish. Seattle traded one first round pick for Percy. So I wanna know how they keep trading first rounders for divas???? Like they even need a 1st. The whole team is pro bowlers that were found in the 2nd round and beyond.
Plus Percy wont have any attitude here and if he did Pete will not tolerate it. Just shut your stupid jealous mouth up and learn something.

  39. Turns out Osi is a little scared. He turned down more money from NYG to play for the Falcons. That tells me all I need to know about him and his comments. He is going from a team that offered him more money, got him two SB rings, and that he can’t crack the starting lineup for….to go to “the best team he has ever seen” that has won one playoff game in a decade and he will start for. What a brilliant judge of character. Maybe Shady McCoy was right about him all along.
