Sanders, Bradshaw leave Pittsburgh without contracts

Bradshaw AP

The Steelers usually don’t do much in free agency.  Which makes even the possibility that they’ll do something in free agency big news in Pittsburgh.

On Thursday, the Steelers hosted safety James Sanders and running back Ahmad Bradshaw for free-agency visits.  According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, both left town without contracts.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Bradshaw will return to Pittsburgh in a few weeks for another look at his foot, which Bradshaw continues to rehab after offseason surgery.

Eventually, the Steelers could decide to fill their needs at running back elsewhere.  Possibly via the draft.

Bradshaw will be back… BET IT..!

This isn’t a situation like the Ravens…where players want to play and give the Ravens a discount. The Steelers have to compensate by paying more money. I feel bad for them – just kidding.

Bradshaw’s foot could be a big problem. I would like to know if he passed or failed his physical. I don’t doubt that Dwyer and Redman need to step it up and play better, but they need another back. Bradshaw would be a great fit.

  5. wycoff says: Mar 29, 2013 9:42 AM

Isaac Redman will have 1500 yards and 15 TDs this year- book it!

  6. Tyler says: Mar 29, 2013 9:46 AM

If his health (foot) is of minimum concern, the Steelers have to try and sign Bradshaw. He’s be a huge boost to the running game.

They are both holding out hope that the patriots will offer them minimum contracts or they don’t care about wining. Every player that wants to win a Super Bowl signs with the Patriots.

Colbert and Tomlin have failed to produce talent through the draft, maintain the locker room, and set up future success. Maybe it was Cowher and his greatness in pgh. I always said it was. Until these two get their egos in check, there will be some issues in Steel Country.

  9. dkoulatsos says: Mar 29, 2013 10:07 AM

Ummmmm….Pittsburgh only has a couple of million in cap room, so they can’t do much in free agency. As a Ravens fan, I’d like to see them add Bradshaw. He is a quality back, fits with the personality of the team, and I think he’d be a good fit for them.

  10. eatitfanboy says: Mar 29, 2013 10:07 AM

Someone is going to land a very good RB for a very good price when they sign Bradshaw.

Even if his foot continues to be a problem it would be worth it for the money you’ll have to pay him this deep into free agency.

If he only plays 10 games, he could still probably give you close to 1,000 and 6-10 tds.

This is the reason why smart teams wait to see how free agency shakes out and don’t start throwing huge amounts of money around on the first day of free agency.

  11. burghman4life says: Mar 29, 2013 10:08 AM

No sense giving New England the opportunity to steal our WR Sanders by tipping their hand and using up what little cap money they have now. Better to let them (NE) spend some of that giant cap space they have first.

  12. jimiinpa says: Mar 29, 2013 10:11 AM

i guess they were not old enough for them

  13. bobzilla1001 says: Mar 29, 2013 10:12 AM

Doesn’t seem likely the Steelers would spend a high draft pick on a running back. Their previous two most productive and popular backs were either acquired in a trade (Jerome Bettis) or an undrafted free agent (Willie Parker). While Mendenhall wasn’t exactly a bust, he also wasn’t worth a first-round pick. The Steelers probably learned from that experience.
Besides, whoever becomes the feature back, a blocking fullback will be needed, something that hasn’t been done since the days of Bettis.

No one wants to play for a team that finishes 3rd in their division… This is not a surprise. The steelers are falling apart as an organization.

As the Steel melts… The Ravens are world champs.

    Sleep tight!

My dad said, “I wouldn’t let Barry Sanders and Terry Bradshaw leave without contracts!” LOL!

  17. swirv78 says: Mar 29, 2013 11:00 AM

I hear that Bradshaw’s meeting went really well. But his foot is not fully healed from surgery.. But the tests show its healing really well! So, in 2 weeks when he comes back? And as long as its healing fine ? They will sign him! They really want to know cause they would like to have him in OTA”S and it would dictate a draft pick. I hope it works out? He would be a good fit for us. Even if we do sign him? We should still draft a Running Back 4rththrough 5th round.. But if they don’t? I really hope they go after Montee Ball in the second..

  18. ravenator says: Mar 29, 2013 11:01 AM

They left without contracts because their franchise is so broke. I mean seriously, you people applaud this front office? When the signing of the offseason is Plaxico Burress, you know you have problems. Cheers!

  19. swirv78 says: Mar 29, 2013 11:07 AM

I can’t wait till next year starts.. Then all these gay Raven fans can’t talk trash no more.. Since they finally did something.. But if I was a Raven fan too? And as many times the Steelers crushed are hearts.. I would be doing the same.. I rooted for the Ravens in the Superbowl Thanks for keeping our record intact.. 6 and counting…. Cause when it comes to the NFL.. It’s about one thing only.. The Lombardi trophies.. Any you Raven fans ever get to admire all 6 of them at Heinz field?

    Ravenator and other Ravens fans:

Until the Ravens catch up with the Redskins, they will be the second best franchise in Maryland. Fact…

STEELERS fans really don’t care what the Ravens, or any other team for that matter, do in free agency. We congratulate your SB win even if you guys do not realize that the Ravens are not HATED like the big dog franchises.

The Ravens were molded from the STEELERS standard…not the other way around.

Keep barkin’ at our heels lil’ terriers…ARF! ARF!

    GO STEELERS!!

I think if you get Romo away from Jerry Jones and all the Dallas drama.. Get him in the right system.. He can win a ring.. It’s hard to play for A owner that is the Owner,GM,Coach,Player,Scout and a cheerleader.. Dallas never wins another Superbowl with him as the owner.. Hopefully his son is as smart as Al Davis’s son? Who comes in and realizes that his father has done nothing but become one of the laughing stocks of the NFL… Cleans house and rebuilds his fathers mess..

Sad but i agree with pitbull up top. Colbert hasnt been a great gm latley. They have missed alot in the draft. Ziggu hood, worild, all running backs, mike adams, all corners except keenan which we let walk…and tomlin is a outstanding motivational coach, but i wonder if he actually knows football. He doesnt make adjustments at all when needed. And lebeau has been nothing but special to our defense but the zone blitz scheme is old and overrated now. I think it might be time he retires and we bring in something fresh. I have zero confidence in our team for the next few years. Its pretty obvious the ravens own our division now and i give credit where its due. Ozzie has been a great gm and drafted well for them. Its pathetic you have cap problems like us tied up into pretty much 4 guys. And just keep letting players walk.

FINALLY! I see some common sense is starting to accumulate in Pittsburgh. Now if only the rest of these posters could admit such truth, I wouldn’t need to educate you all on how horrendous this front office truly is.

I bet the Steelers fall apart…says every jeleous fan of lesser teams. Steelers went 8-8 in an injury riddled season they’ll be fine. All those that predict doom and gloom for the past 20 years end up crawling back into their holes come fall.

To the silly Ravens fans talking up a storm…yuck it up while you can…it will take another 12 years to get to another Super Bowl.

if theyre is two things you can count on its this. 1) bradshaws foot WILL act up again. but 2) bradshaw wil play almost if not the whole year on that bad foot, will run over people, will make people miss and will make it look as if he doesnt have a foot issue

hes a beassst. miss him in NY alrdy

  33. classyjacklambert says: Mar 29, 2013 1:17 PM

The ravens fear the mighty Steelers. If we wanted these guys badly enough we would have signed them, we just realize that great teams are built through the draft not from accumulating big name free agents or else the skins would have been a powerhouse these last ten years. Only moronic ravens fans think that they are going to have a better defense by ripping our the heart of their d-schemes and replacing them with a bunch of the “stars” from bad teams.

Is Dwyer not an every down back or something? He seemed to have the RB1 spot pretty much locked down last year, granted I didn’t watch many irrelevant Stealers games last year.

Pittsburgh has needs pretty much across the board, I’m not sure RB is a priority.

I like Trufant as are Corner pick there.. And I would Love Austin or Patterson at WR.. Reports are they are really High on Arthur Brown From K State.. They said they would play him at ILB.. Thoughts on pick 17???

  42. genericcommenter says: Mar 29, 2013 4:13 PM

Well, they did the same thing with Beanie Wells. They had him in twice. Supposedly he “passed” his physical but they were still concerned about the injury. So maybe they are just collecting physicals on RBs coming off injury and then will decided to take a chance on one on the cheap.

  43. Deb says: Mar 29, 2013 5:32 PM

Right now the glaring mistake of the Steelers (supposedly) closing the door on James Harrison is distracting me from thinking much about Bradshaw and Sanders. I also think we could have and would have done more to keep Keenan Lewis if we’d realized we could have signed him for what he went to New Orleans. Yes, Cortez Allen is better … but the Lewis of last season was better than Gay. So far, this isn’t our best off season.
