Tyrann Mathieu to visit New England

Tyrann Mathieu AP

The Patriots are taking a look at the Honey Badger.

Former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu will visit with the Patriots on April 5, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald.

Mathieu is one of the most intriguing prospects in this year’s draft. As a true sophomore in 2011, he was a Heisman Trophy finalist who was widely regarded as one of the best defensive players (and one of the best special teams players) in college football. But there were also questions about his size and his ability to match up with top-flight wide receivers in man coverage — and even bigger questions were raised when Mathieu got kicked off the team at LSU, apparently for repeatedly using marijuana.

Most draft observers have Mathieu pegged as a third- or fourth-round pick. The Patriots already used their fourth-round pick on another talented but troubled cornerback in last year’s trade for Aqib Talib, but he could be a target for New England with their third-round selection, which is No. 91 overall.

Honey Badger don’t give a $#!t, he just takes what he wants!

If the Pats are looking to get him with their 3rd rounder that means they aren’t as interested in Emmanuel Sanders as everybody assumes. Or they’ll make a draft day trade that I don’t think Belichick has ever made, a trading next year’s pick for one this year. Or maybe use their second rounder, Belichick does like to gamble with those.

It’d be a good place for him. If you screw up on the Patriots, you’re gone.

  5. CKL says: Mar 29, 2013 12:52 PM

I remember Mathieu was asked a few weeks ago which team grilled him the hardest at the Combine & he said the Pats. Looks like they want another shot at the grill.

Huge pats fan here, and I like this kid and think he will be a really good player… but I don’t really think having talib, denard, and this kid as our key cogs is a smart decision. From a football stance it would be awesome, but it just seems to flammable.

  7. chiwizlive says: Mar 29, 2013 1:12 PM

Nooo, this kid is a playmaker I sure hope the broncos give this guy a chance if its in the 3rd round or lower…

  8. tedmurph says: Mar 29, 2013 1:15 PM

Obviously the Pats know what they’re doing, but to use one of their 30 pre-draft visits on this guy is a headscratcher. It seems like his game would be hard to translate into the pros with his lack of top end speed and size. I know he has instincts but still…he didn’t even play FB last yr. Not to mention his other problem, although they said the same thing about Hernandez. Pats, at this point don’t have 4th or 5th rnd picks and most don’t think he should go higher than that. Don’t get it.

This is a smoke screen……….by New England. The Honey Badger is drug free. New England is just blowing smoke.

    Puff, puff give.

If he drafted by the Patriots you can cue the comments on how it’s a great acquisition and that B.B. and the organization will keep him in line and if not he is gone. But if the Raiders, Bengals, or most other organizations draft him he will be a bust, total screw up for the team and it is a wasted draft pick.
I am getting tired of hearing how only the Patriots are the only team that can control anyone who has had problems in the past.

That makes no sense. Sanders is a WR and Mathieu is a DB. If there interested in drafting a DB in the 3rd, how would that factor in picking up Sanders during free agency? I don’t see the connection.

    Redskins! Go get the honey!

  15. vincentvega513 says: Mar 29, 2013 1:31 PM

    Lets face it now.

He WILL be drafted in the 1st round.. Hopefully to the Bengals. And if we dont get him then, we can get him with that (Carson Palmer) pick, #37 overall. Thank you Oakland

  16. shwoogy1 says: Mar 29, 2013 1:35 PM

The Bears should definitely draft this guy if they have a chance. He would would be perfect to replace DJ Moore at nickel! ( If he can stop smoking as much( since they basically can get away with smoking bud in the NFL))

The Bengals were praised up and down for taking a chance on Vontaze Burfict.

And the Raiders DO draft a lot of high profile busts.

    So, are we done here?

  18. mistersmith22 says: Mar 29, 2013 1:43 PM

He’ll go in the 2nd round. He’s too dynamic not to. And he’s clean and focused — remember all the stories a week ago about living with Patrick Peterson?

Every draft has “problem children” that are totally fine. We all made bad decisions when we were 19. He’ll go in the late 2nd and it will be a STEAL.

Simple, sanders is a restricted free agent with what amounts to a third round tender. So if the Pats sign Sanders, they have to give their third round pick to the Steelers. They only have one pick so they cannot do both.

New England’s not crazy. They’ve told him that unlike other teams who are offering him big paycheck, they’re willing to forego the paycheck and give him small bills sealed in quart-size platic baggies. They’ve even offered to put a damp towel under the front door, to keep media-types from sneaking in listening devices. Gotta keep the man in his element to impress.

  24. deffjeff17 says: Mar 29, 2013 1:57 PM

I’d like to see him come to the 49ers in the 3rd round, we need another corner and he does have talent. but being out here in the bay area idk if honey badger can resist smoking that good stuff.

  26. scalfor3 says: Mar 29, 2013 2:00 PM

This Pats fan would love them to take a flier on this guy. He would bring a degree of playmaking and “nasty” that our secondary is missing. He would also provide badly needed depth (remember, the Pats are one injury or cranky judge away from starting Kyle Arrington again, blech) at a key position while also bringing special teams value. Finally, in New England he’d have a great role model in Hernandez; a guy who had a similar fall for pot-related reasons and has seemingly turned it around and turned into a very productive pro.

Just kidding as I don’t think any employer in WA (incluing NFL) allows it even if the state does.

Like a complete loser I watched the DB’s combine drills. This guy looked worlds better than any guy on the field.

The ‘I played the position’ card is about as d bag as it gets but man he is exactly what I wanted to be. Smooooth. Get him in the right D and he will make plays. Size didn’t seem to stop him in the SEC, turn on the tape..

If they used to call Ty Law and Lawyer Milloy the Law Firm, what are they going to call Talib, Dennard and Mathieu?

  39. lo6icalvoice says: Mar 29, 2013 3:00 PM

@757ravensfan: because the pats have to give up a 3rd rounder for Sanders… They dont have a 4th, 5th, or 6th round pick, and Mathieu wont be there for their 7th rounder. So they cant have both Sanders and Mathieu with that same 3rd round pick.

If BB wants them both he has some moves to make…

  40. tothefellowshipofthemiserable says: Mar 29, 2013 3:45 PM

  45. 13arod says: Mar 29, 2013 7:40 PM

If Belichick stalls, and waits till the third round, he will not be there. BB needs to be aggressive on Mathieu and name him NLT round 2.
