Kolb deal worth a “maximum” of $13 million

KNXV_Kevin_Kolb_20120930140917_320_240 Getty Images

Sorry, Bills fans, but it’s a done deal.

Adam Schefter of ESPN previously reported that the Bills are finalizing a deal with quarterback Kevin Kolb.  Schefter now reports that it’s a two-year contract, worth a “maximum” of $13 million.

The “maximum” surely will be reached only if Kolb becomes the starter and holds the job.

The real question is this:  What’s the minimum?

Kolb’s camp currently has no reason to leak that.  As usual, the truth will come out once the contract is filed and the official numbers surface.

Sorry? It can get worse than Kolb.

Is he really any better than Ryan Fitzpatrick? Weird match up.

  3. egodz51 says: Mar 30, 2013 10:15 PM

It sucks being a Bills fan. We are always hopeful and then always let down. It’ll happen this time too.

And it’ll happen again when we draft Nassib.

    Al Davis kind of crazy.

  5. pitch87mph says: Mar 30, 2013 10:18 PM

As lifelong Bills fan, this had to happen. Could NOT go into the draft w/o a serviceable QB. No need to reach in Round 1 now. Grab a Tyler (Wilson or Bray) and round 3 or 4. Let the rest of the league reach for Nassib, Smith, Glennon and Barkley. I’ll take the guys with the most upside, but perhaps least ready to play right away. Give me Wilson or Bray in round 3 or 4, sit ‘em, develop ‘em, and throw them in the fire after Kolb is inevitably hurt midseason. And save those top 2 picks for immediate starters.

  6. blacknole08 says: Mar 30, 2013 10:19 PM

Don’t really understand this move. If he starts he won’t last past October.

    Bills fans deserve better.

  7. mazblast says: Mar 30, 2013 10:20 PM

Why should Bills fans be “sorry” about this deal?

–There’s not much QB talent in this year’s draft.
–The Bills have little to lose in going the free agent route.
–Kolb has a winning record as a starter. His biggest problem has been injuries.
–The current incumbent QB is Tarvaris Jackson.
–The franchise hasn’t been to the playoffs this century. Why not gamble a little?

  8. siggtacular says: Mar 30, 2013 10:21 PM

    Two words, Buffalo. Geno Smith.

If the Bills ride it out with Kolb, they’re absolutely a terrible organization.

  9. liddogg33 says: Mar 30, 2013 10:22 PM

How in the hell did this BUM get more money then Hasselback??? I mean Kolb has never done one thing to merit this contract. I hope T Jack kills this clown!!!!

  10. trbowman says: Mar 30, 2013 10:22 PM

Sorry for what? I like Kolb. Performed admirably behind a miserable offensive line in Arizona last year. Came up in the clutch at times. Better than he gets credit for.

    Major upgrade on Tarvaris Jackson.

I’m still hoping for Geno Smith, but Kolb is a much better quarterback than Jackson.

  11. sirdrinksalot says: Mar 30, 2013 10:22 PM

Very good. All of the dumb Bills fans can’t see the bigger picture. More competition is good and this allows them not to reach for a QB in the first. Not to mention he was never really given a chance behind that turnstile offensive line.

  12. hawkforlife says: Mar 30, 2013 10:22 PM

“Sorry” ? Why, he hasn’t played a down. Give the guy a chance. He hasn’t really had one with all the screwy decisions and poor coaching in his last stop. Terrible drafts and bad ownership.

    Of course it is Buffalo…..

  13. shawon0meter says: Mar 30, 2013 10:23 PM

    It’s T-Jack’s job.

  15. marvsleezy says: Mar 30, 2013 10:26 PM

He’s a better backup option than Jackson- this is no big deal

  16. trbowman says: Mar 30, 2013 10:29 PM

“It sucks being a Bills fan. We are always hopeful and then always let down. It’ll happen this time too.”

Hopeful? I’m never hopeful for this god-forsaken franchise.

We hire a guy a college coach. And not even a great one, freaking Syracuse’s football coach! Then he brings his entire crew of losers to the coaching staff. I’m simply on the edge of my seat for Marrone and this Syracuse coaching staff. Oh, joy!

It’s made worse by the fact that there were so many good coaching candidates in 2012, and the Bills go with this clown. I’ll believe I’m wrong when I see it.

2011 was a tease with the hot start, otherwise I’m never let down by the Bills because my hopes are never up.

As your starting QB?! No…it really cant

  19. brassknuckles47 says: Mar 30, 2013 10:39 PM

Let’s see now…..he made millions from the Eagles and was sent packing. AZ paid BIG bucks for him, and then asked him to leave. Now, Bills pay $13mm for him. Guess who’s laughing all the way to his next job?

  20. tejguy says: Mar 30, 2013 10:40 PM

Jerry Jones kind of crazy **

  21. johnnyoclock says: Mar 30, 2013 10:42 PM

Bills fans: Kolb in his first five starts in the league was named NFC offensive player of the month. Twice.

He was also I think the first rookie to throw for 300+ in his first 2 starts.

You’ve got something there. He had no line when being named the full time starter in Philly and that’s why Vick got the job bc Vick is the all time greatest at running for his life. In Arizona he had no line either.

If you just plug him in there, let him go, leave him alone and don’t yank him around as a starter, put up with initial growing into the job, you’ll have a real good quarterback. That’s the key, no one has yet to just put him in there and leave him there.

It’s a very good signing, you’ll see that later if you just leave him in there and protect him. You’ll be surprised.

  22. harvestern says: Mar 30, 2013 10:45 PM

They had to sign somebody, not sure why people are making a big deal out of it. If you have one viable QB on your roster you probably should sign another experienced QB. This is a good signing and now they can focus on getting another one to compete in camp from the draft.

  23. win1soon says: Mar 30, 2013 10:48 PM

The media is amazing 2 or 3 yrs ago this guy was talked about as a franchise QB and teams would give up a kings ransom to get him. He goes to a bad team with a terrible line and bam at 28 he is done. I assume the Bills will be drafting their QB of the future in round 2 or 3, so what do that have to lose giving this guy a shot.

  24. EJ says: Mar 30, 2013 10:49 PM

Bills Fans: Don’t let this get you down, Kolb is not that bad. In Arizona, Kolb only had one receiving target, a terrible O-line and terrible coaching. He was asked to run a style of Offense that he was not used to. Marrone runs a similar Offense to what Kolb was used to in Philly. and we all know how Kolb was in Philly, above average. Besides, having Kolb and Jackson fight it out for the starting position makes sense… Which ever Rookie QB the Bills decide to take a chance on, whether It be Smith, Manuel or Nassib, will probably need a half of a season to a full season to get up to speed in order to start. Not one of these QB’s from this years draft looks fully ready to just jump right in. I think Nix has a solid plan in place. It also could be much worse than Kolb, much worse. Go Bills!!!! #BillsMafia

  25. stlunatik says: Mar 30, 2013 11:06 PM

His only problem is being a sack magnet. I bet NFC west defenses hate to see him go.

  26. anicra says: Mar 30, 2013 11:13 PM

I cannot say this is a bad move for the Bills. I think he could work well for them. Course, Bills have not had a QB since Kelly. However, I do believe this another knock against the QBs class coming out this year.

  27. therealraider says: Mar 30, 2013 11:30 PM

I just hope the Raiders are smart enough to simply pay Carson Palmer .. work through his contract ..and then move on. They wont get a better QB before his contract expires. Sad but true!

  28. jpaq68 says: Mar 30, 2013 11:31 PM

    Goodbye career, hello mediocracy.

  29. mnajb says: Mar 30, 2013 11:36 PM

That price range, I think, puts the Bills RIGHT in the range where you get a 2nd-3rd round QB, hope for the best, and still pay way less for the QB room than most teams over the next couple years.

  30. thegregwitul says: Mar 30, 2013 11:49 PM

Kolb might be made of glass, but the guy has an arm, and you couldn’t say that about Ryan ‘Noodles’ Fitzpatrick.

Two years with a max payout of 13 million? With protection and more than one offensive weapon, Kolb should at least be as good as Tannehill. He’s already better than Sanchez so that leaves Tom Brady. With stability at QB and a solid draft the Bills should at least make it tough on their divisional opponents. I’m not ready to talk playoffs, but if Kolb stays healthy and continues to maintain his winning record, the Bills would be right with Miami in the chase for 2nd place, and all without having to backload a half dozen contracts.

  31. coltzfan166 says: Mar 31, 2013 12:14 AM

They’ll still draft Nassib in the 2nd

  32. alibidavej says: Mar 31, 2013 12:20 AM

    Thank you, Buffalo.

  33. rodericksilva says: Mar 31, 2013 12:59 AM

Kolb played very good in Philly. He got injured and lost his starting job when Vick came back on fire (2010).

He was good enough for the Cards to give up RDC and a pick.

The Cards had no OL the whole time Kolb was there.

  34. daknight93 says: Mar 31, 2013 1:21 AM

    YUCK!!

  35. mtkenney says: Mar 31, 2013 1:27 AM

This signing only proves that there are no true 1st year starters in this years draft. But we all new that didn’t we. 1st rd WR/OL. 2nd rd QB.

  36. goldrush36 says: Mar 31, 2013 4:03 AM

Arizona acttually had a really solid receiving corps so that excuse is lame. Their line was awful but Kolb also flushed from the pocket immediately at any real or imagined threat of pressure. It is not just the line that was a problem. Az also had a top caliber defense. The team is a couple tackles and a competent qb away from being a perrenial contender. The player of the week awards also came on an exlosive qb friendly office against bad secondaries. While healthy he is probably an upgrade but this guy is not gonna be a franchise qb. That is why Andy was so quick to dump him. That is also why he actually lost the job to Skelton in camp. An injury briefly opened that door again before he got hurt himself

  37. thrasherm316 says: Mar 31, 2013 4:10 AM

Without anybody to throw to aside from Stevie Johnson, it would not matter if the hybrid super QB Peyton Brady Montana would be behind center. Let’s get some targets to throw to and see if Kolb has something.

  38. onbucky96 says: Mar 31, 2013 4:36 AM

Donavan McNabb, what are your thoughts about this deal?

  39. larrydavid7000 says: Mar 31, 2013 6:48 AM

1step forward 2 steps back.!!!! That’s why Fred Davis did not sign with the bills.

  40. j0esixpack says: Mar 31, 2013 7:04 AM

The Bills won’t make the same mistake Wrecks Ryan did starting their yet to be drafted rookie QB immediately.

The vets will have a fair chance to compete for a starting job – and a fair chance to keep the job until the rookie is ready. A full redshirt season will pay dividends long term.

That means Bills fans should be prepared to write off this season – but they probably already knew that.

  41. bills399 says: Mar 31, 2013 7:16 AM

The bills have had jp losman, Trent Edwards, and Ryan Fitzpatrick quarterback the team over the past decade. This is why they haven’t made the playoffs. Taking kolb upgrades the position. It also allows the bills to go best available at 8, trade back into round 1 if barkley or smith slips to 20. This team still managed ti win 6 games last 2 years with fitz at qb and chan.
gailey coaching. And for the genius who said doug marrone is a loser and so is the coaching staff….he took a terrible Syracuse team and got them to .500. He also has nfl experience coaching drew brees
and has made a qb like nassib a first round discussion. Also, last time I checked Pettine has a pretty good rep in the nfl as def coord. Please do your homework before u post.

  42. wwwmattcom says: Mar 31, 2013 7:29 AM

Rob Johnson, Todd Collins, Kelly Holcomb, JP Losman, Trent Edwards, Brian Brohm, Troy Brown, Vince Young, that QB from the YouTube video,………..

I would say yes. It can get worse.

  43. sfniners4life says: Mar 31, 2013 8:15 AM

Wow bill fans. This guy was better then Vick in Philly and played behind possibly worst oline in cards and still won 4 straight for them. Cards talent level across the board is one of the worst in the league and this guy made u think u were good for a 4 weeks. Kolb isn’t the franchise guy everyone wants but compared to fitz I would be excited. He got a arm, mobile, was thought high of from reid, and is better then 30 per of the qb in league hands down. My only question mark about kolb is his character and is if he a leader or not. I still expect bills to draft qb but geno going be gone and he a bust. Whatever qb y’all get in the 2nd or 3rd is going be a development guy from this years class so to have a solid 2 options at qb is a massive improvement over last season. Lets not forget what wonders harbaugh did for Alex.

  44. mail2bency says: Mar 31, 2013 8:18 AM

Cheer up Bills fans. You still have those wings to be proud of….

  45. nananatman says: Mar 31, 2013 8:29 AM

I don’t think he will do as badly in Buffalo, they have an offensive line.

  46. jpaq68 says: Mar 31, 2013 9:24 AM

The Bills are picking Nassib in the 1st round and they will probably trade up to do so.

  47. reeggss says: Mar 31, 2013 9:29 AM

Completely agree, this guy has failed where many others have failed as well. Philly and Zona’s lines were horrific, give this guy a chance and he may prove to be a solid QB. Not saying he is MVP material but I like this move, takes us out of desperation mode in draft, minimal financial investment and there is some upside here. He is on a team with a solid line, has good RB’s and USES them with solid D. Lets see what he can do.

  48. sl781 says: Mar 31, 2013 9:35 AM

Why should us Bills fans be sorry? He’s an upgrade over every QB they’ve had since Jim Kelly. Yes, it’s been that bad.

I like Kolb, happy to see him in Buffalo.

  49. therolandobottom says: Mar 31, 2013 9:47 AM

  50. jetsjetsjetsnow says: Mar 31, 2013 9:53 AM

I don’t know if Bills or Jets QB situation is worse at this point but I’m at least glad to see another mediocre QB being taken off the market & headed to division rival!

  51. kgun80 says: Mar 31, 2013 10:33 AM

What’s the worst thing that can happen? We have a solid running game. So unlike Arizona all the pressure isn’t on him. I’m pretty sure were drafting a QB in the second. So we can groom the kid while Kolb and Jackson compete for the starting position. At least we look to be better then the Yets

  52. vaphinfan says: Mar 31, 2013 10:46 AM

Not a Kolb fan but wasn’t the Cards 4 – 0 this year then he got hurt?

  53. originalsteelcurtain says: Mar 31, 2013 10:46 AM

Weak armed, brittle Kevin Kolb…in the swirling winds of Buffalo?
Way to strive for mediocrity, Bills!

  54. jdouble777 says: Mar 31, 2013 11:07 AM

Should have went hard after Barkley.

  55. johnnyoclock says: Mar 31, 2013 11:09 AM

If the Bills are smart, they’ll copy and paste the Philly screen game Kolb is used to when he had Westbrook and then McCoy and realize Spiller is also the same guy. They should develop an offense around that screen game and start building plays further in the passing game based off of that. That’s how you put a new qb in a position to succeed, do what he’s used to. Then take that and combine it with whatever playbook Marrone is bringing and that’s how you build a new offense.

  56. shinedown37 says: Mar 31, 2013 11:48 AM

He had a pathetic preseason last year, and had the team at 4-0 to start the season. If he stays healthy for a full season, then I would start to judge him. Until then he is just a injury prone QB. Who has taken too many hits to the head, I think it all started back in Philly with Clay Matthews .

  57. censormynameandmycomments says: Mar 31, 2013 11:59 AM

Enjoy watching Kolb needlessly run out of the pocket to his right and throw the ball out of bounds, Bills fans. Cards were 4-0 because of the defense. As a longtime Cards fan (and therefore someone who has seen a terrible Qb or 10) Kolb is terrible. He made the O-line look a lot worse than it was because he was terrified of being hit. He couldn’t even beat out Skelton in camp.

  58. buffalobills716 says: Mar 31, 2013 1:42 PM

I take him over that beard that was released… In other words, good signing Buddy Nix

  59. kirschmania says: Mar 31, 2013 2:03 PM

Sorry? This really isn’t a bad move. Who else is there? Who else do they have? I’m sure if 13 is the max the deal won’t be overly egregious. Kolb has good potential. I’d say he’s a bounce-back potential type player. Just think, the Vikes paid pretty much the same for a backup in Minnesota.

  60. patridge21 says: Mar 31, 2013 3:03 PM

you know u all kill me. anybody who watches or at least has a clue about the NFL should know that the draft this year consists of underachieving Talents (so far) like Barkley and then a good few one year standouts (Geno). kolb was in Arizona where he was BASHED WEEKLY not only by radios but also LBs and DEs. cards sucked and quite honestly this move is a two year pickup. the organization knows we need a qb and also know there’s no #8 qb in the draft. kolb has a chip on his shoulder and all I whiners chanting Geno will be glad to realize we now can fix another gaping hole we need fixed!!! That’s gonna be easier to do with our #8 pick in a draft weak at the QB position. good move and please no more Fitz–sucks–di** comments because he’s a complete joke. also Kolb may make more than hassle beck because he’s still living in a home, not a darn old mans retirement center

  61. schwandm says: Mar 31, 2013 5:51 PM

Call me crazy or whatever you want but I think this is a good move. We can have Kolb and Jackson compete and have our QB we draft stand back and learn. Somewhat like Miami did with (Moore and Leftwitch last year….but Tannehill performed better than new Head Coach expected). If you watched Hard Knocks you’d see this. This could happen with the Bills this year. Who knows I like this move. Stevie even says Everyone asking my opinion…
Kolb is legit. Just need protection.

  62. stevequinn says: Apr 1, 2013 8:21 AM

Kolb is a very good QB and this is a smart signing by Buffalo. Playing behind that porous Arizona offensive line, nobody could have won any games.
