Bills add Alan Branch on one-year deal

The Bills haven’t made much noise in free agency, but they did just add some size.

According to multiple reports, the Bills have signed Seahawks defensive tackle Alan Branch to a one-year deal worth up to $3 million.

Branch started 31 games the last two seasons for the Seahawks, after starting just three games in four years with the Cardinals, who chose him in the second round of the 2007 Draft.

  1. Damn.. thought for sure a Gus Bradley reunion was in the works. I am sure this will make people forget all about that Kolb signing.

  2. This is a great addition. A Versatile Guy that stuff the run, eat blocks, or play the 5-technique. He will fit Pettine’s defensive scheme perfectly.

  3. Looks like the Bills are picking up some decent players on the back end of free agency. At least there’s some semblance of strategy in place in the front office. Can anyone say “moneyball”?

  4. I dunno, I watched every down of every ‘Hawks game, and I can’t remember a single play he made.
Granted, it’s hard to evaluate good DT play, at least half the time a guy’s assignment is to absorb blockers.

I always thought of Branch as just “a guy”, another body. Seattle is actively looking for interior DL in free agency and will go there early in the draft, yet they still let him walk. That should tell you something.

Maybe he’ll catch on in Buffalo, it’s not like he was actively terrible or anything.

No, no , no. Alan Branch is always gonna be in there for one reason, and one reason only- To stuff the run. He is what you could call above average in doing just that when he’s on, and average when he’s not. Not a bad addition if you are looking to limit the ground game, but dude is a slug, period.

  6. I was hoping the Eagles would kick the tires on Branch. After all, as Chip would say “BIG PEOPLE BEAT UP ON LITTLE PEOPLE” and he is BIG!!!

  7. Instantly will help Buffalo in the run game. Kyle Williams, Dareus and Branch rotating with Williams at outside, looking really stout. Branch doesn’t get any pass rush but even the best teams don’t have success running at him. He will be missed after a few solid years in Seattle.

  8. stop spending money on unnecessary pieces Buffalo!!! Give some attention to the WR position. Brandon Lloyd is still available!!!! Take a look into real play makers and stop getting washed up overhyped rejects like Kevin Kolb

  9. Interior D-line size is something the Bills need and anyone who can eat up blockers. This should make Kyle Williams happy to know that a guy this big will give him some relief up front.

Perhaps you are right. The signing does give the Bills D more versatility though. If he plays the Nose it will allow Dareus who is more athletic to kick out to the 5.

  11. The Bills did need another DT to spell Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus, and from what I’ve read on Branch, he is an awesome run stuffer and soaks up blocks well. Good signing Nix!
