Geno Smith calls report about work ethic “untrue”

It didn’t take long for Geno Smith to hear about the rip job from Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly, and it didn’t take long for a reaction.

After the report (from the same guy who lambasted Cam Newton for a “fake smile”) which criticized Smith’s work ethic, Smith took exception to the unnamed sources cited.

It’s untrue in all things,” Smith told Jim Corbett of USA Today. “I heard about it [Monday] night when my quarterbacks coach called me to tell me about it.”

His old quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital, who now has Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, said Smith is a student of the game.

“I was laughing with Geno about it Monday night and I said, ‘Welcome to the business,”’ Spavital said. “I’ve been around Geno for two years. I thought he was one of the hardest-working quarterbacks I’ve ever been around.

“You have people who are about ‘What can football do for me?’ Geno is about ‘What I can do for football?’ If you take the game away from him, I think he dies. He is a dream come true for a coach.”

Of course, getting a former coach to defend for the record a player who has been criticized by an anonymous source isn’t hard.

Likewise, West Virginia wideout Stedman Bailey, who played with Smith in high school, scoffed at the report.

“I know first hand that Geno is one of the hardest working guys having watched how far he’s come over our years together,” Bailey said. “He’s a leader, a hard-working guy, a film junkie. He has all the qualities you’d want in a franchise quarterback. Any one looking for that, Geno is your man.”

Apparently, Smith isn’t the kind of quarterback Nawrocki is looking for, and neither was Newton.

People just hate greatness. It’s evident with RGIII. Outstanding individual who just happens to be the best talent on a Football field today. Appreciate these talents…it’s earned through hard work. Those who hate RGIII, Jordan, LeBron etc…are folks who don’t work hard and silver spoon, feed me types. #RGIIIiseliteDealwithit

And neither was RGIII who Nawrocki said was worse than Newton.

Anyone have any idea what Newton, RGIII, and Geno have in common?

Well if you’ve seen Manziel’s dedication this offseason that’s not saying much…lol

Huh? Did you read this sentence aloud before hitting the enter button?

@nextyear….certainly you don’t expect proofreading on here, do you?

nmking, you beat me to it. Nawrocki seems to have issues with a certain type of QB.

  6. Patriot42 says: Apr 2, 2013 7:57 PM

C’mon, that is one phony smile and I certainly don’t want a guy like that leading my team, no way.

  7. nomoreseasontix says: Apr 2, 2013 7:57 PM

Black, white, pink or purple… Who cares ?
We’ll know how they turned out in 10 years.
    That’s what matters

I think Geno Smith is a first round talent, but not top five, and maybe not top 10. The reason why is because he couldn’t elevate his team in college. When West Virginia began to struggle, he struggled right along with them.

Andrew Luck and RGIII both elevated their teams in college, and you see the same things happening with their teams in the NFL. I don’t see that with Geno Smith or Matt Barkley for that matter.

As I said on the first topic, read what Nawrocki said about EJ Manuel positive wise. He raved about his intelligence, work ethic and leadership. Last I checked, Manuel is black.

The difference between Smith and Newton is that everyone is rushing to Smith’s defense…everyone. Former coaches, teammates, draft people, etc to a man think this criticism of Smith is ludicrous and they have copious examples of seeing him work first hand. Not so much with Cam. And I’ve never gotten the impression that Smith is a kid who isn’t interested in getting better. He has a quiet seeming demeanor, but that’s not worthy of vitriol. He comes across as a dedicated kid who can take coaching and has a serious love for the game. I thought when Mariucci put Smith on the whiteboard on that one show he did pretty well memorizing the play considering his offense was run from the sidelines. Cam was awful on the board and showed his entitlement mentality with his explanation to Gruden about why he ignored his coaches instructions at the end of a game. I’d say Nawrocki has the wrong bee in his bonnet big time on Smith but looks right so far about Newton.

  10. isabsir says: Apr 2, 2013 8:03 PM

It’s one thing to be critical but character assassinations, which are unfounded, is another. The guy is a flat out clown. He tried to back up his claim about Geno not being prepared by pointing out his ‘muscle tone’.

  11. isabsir says: Apr 2, 2013 8:06 PM

Yet athletically he performed well at the combine.

  12. auburntigers34 says: Apr 2, 2013 8:13 PM

anyone(looking at you, CLK) that thinks that Nawrocki was accurate about Cam Newton is an idiot.

  13. realfootballfan says: Apr 2, 2013 8:22 PM

Next up for Nawrocki, Teddy Bridgewater fake smile and laziness scouting reports for 2014. he’s already got it written, just change the name from Newton to Griffin to Smith to Bridgewater.

And for the guy saying he raves about EJ Manuel, he’s not being touted as a first round pick. That’s the point that he’s raving about one QB, Barkley, who actually played horribly this last year and has a million questions about him but unmercifully rips the other guy who just happens to be black for some phantom character reasons.

Crazy – they mentioned this dude on BaltimoreRavens.com today. They pulled up his 2008 assessment of Joe Flacco –

“He has faced marginal competition. Too often he locks on receivers and waits for them to uncover before throwing. Is not a confident quick-triggered decision-maker. Has average anticipation. Is stationary in the pocket and shows little athleticism to move his feet and avoid the rush. He can be flustered by pressure and late to feel it. Has marginal accuracy on the move. To often closes his front foot when he steps into his throws and his ball placement is erratic. Could need some adjustment time to taking snaps under center. Not overly confident.”

Some may agree with some of this, but Flacco CERTAINLY has confidence, and he avoids the rush pretty well. He definitely didn’t need adjustment time (started from day 1 and has done really, really well)

This guy sounds like he just throws stuff at the wall and sees what sticks. And also likes to drum up controversy to gain some readers. Like Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun. Little facts, and always trying to create a stir.

  15. therealpittbull says: Apr 2, 2013 8:50 PM

Why is he trying to take down a young man, just trying to progress himself? Not only that, work ethic can never be defined by another, but only by ones self. Geno knows how much he put forth, and if he’s good with mediocrity or greatness, thats his decision solely.

  16. latchbeam says: Apr 2, 2013 8:53 PM

Nawrocki must have been the best QB to ever play the game… no, never heard of him? Well he must be a great analyst then, right? No, no one knows who he works for? Wait… who is this guy??

  21. stealthjunk says: Apr 2, 2013 10:04 PM

One difference with Newton is that some of his teammates, coaches, etc. were talking crap about him “anonymously” and behind his back. It doesn’t seem like any such “anonymous” sources have ever said anything like that about Geno — nothing but good things from people willing to put their name on the record.

  22. vicksprman says: Apr 2, 2013 10:08 PM

  23. qdog112 says: Apr 2, 2013 10:19 PM

463 yards vs. an LSU defense full of NFL players. Nobody has done that before – CASE CLOSED.

Nawrocki should be looking for a job. Do not run from the obvious. This guy is an unabashed racist. He could have just cut and pasted what he said about Cam and inserted Geno. QUADRUPLE GARBAGE!!!

He is just another one of the Skip Bayless types. They will say anything to get pub for themselves. He is just making himself more irrelevant every time he puts stuff out like this. He will do the same thing to someone else next year.

You know what bothers me? No one is crushing ProFootballWeekly as a dead medium?

This was (apparently) a credible publication back in 1978.

If it was so good or lethal wouldn’t ESPN have it bought it out the way it did with SportsTalk.com or Adam Schefter?

I don’t agree with everything ESPN does, but it is not that stupid to at least talk to PFW about a … “merger”.

PFW has said in times such as 2011 that past behavior indicates future behavior. How can you stay the same from your college days till you played your last down in the pros?

When Terrell Owens was coming out did it say “Negatives: Divisive in locker room, pits people against each other, demands the ball excessively from quarterbacks, has politically incorrect answers in televised settings.”

    “Projection: Undrafted Free Agent”?

BTW, here is what PFW and Nawrocki said about RUSSELL WILSON last year (see what’s in CAPS):

    “Negatives:
Is short and height limits his field vision at times. LIMITED DROP-BACK PRODUCTION. INCONSISTENT BALL PLACEMENT. Will vacate the pocket prematurely. Locks on to receivers. HAS MADE SOME QUESTIONABLE DECISIONS LATE IN GAMES (SEE EAST CAROLINA AND VIRGINIA TECH 2010, MICHIGAN STATE 2011). IS UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE COLORADO ROCKIES, AND HIS COMMITMENT TO FOOTBALL NEEDS TO BE EVALUATED.”

    Wisconsin ran a “spread”???

72.8% comp. rate isn’t accurate???? Where was the analysis about his inaccuracy when Ron Jaworski talked about how Russell Wilson should have been the 3rd QB taken in the 2012 Draft???

Isn’t Jaws more thorough than other analysts???

And ALL those times Wilson kept pleading to interviewers that he’s a quarterback at 5’10” his commitment to football was so worth questioning???

Here’s his Wikipedia (more trustworthy than PFW in recent years) page:
“In January 2012, Wilson informed the Rockies that he would be pursuing a career in the NFL and would not report to spring training for the 2012 season”.

That sounds like a quitter in baseball. Not everyone is Roger Clemens!!!

Brandon Weeden and Chris Weinke ended their MLB pursuits. Did they go back to baseball after entering the NFL or ending NCAA Football??

The Bo Jackson/Deion Sanders days are over and Deion ended his athletic career as a football player.

Pat White is done too!!! He only thought about baseball because he was bad as a Dolphin QB!!!

Baseball is taking a seat behind the Miami Heat for a reason. It’s not hot! The TV ratings (which have their issues too) reach new record lows periodically for the World Series and All Star Game more often than ever before.

    Football is America’s sport now!!!!

And for people like Tom Curran on WEEI and people on “The Dan Patrick Show” back in years such as 2012 and 2011 respectively acting as if PFW and Nawrocki was perfect was journalistic irresponsibility. It is because when you should be more objective and point out flaws so that the perception of the individual under the spotlight be level you are setting the profiled people up for failure.

I don’t think PFW has a better future 10-15 years from now and it’s time to take these reports with more ease than the way that it is currently.

Nothing lasts forever and people should be implying that message to PFW … ASAP!!!

I am not one to typically think racism at the drop of a hat, and in this case I was starting to…except….I have seen things online saying that Nawrocki wrote a good report on RG3. (I have not seen any report yet, and have yet to search for one)

My point, however, is perhaps you should fact-check before saying something that might be inaccurate.
