Matt Flynn thinks the Raiders are building “something special”

Matt Flynn AP

Raiders quarterback Matt Flynn has been a backup on good teams for most of his career. Now he’s expected to be the starter on a bad team. But Flynn doesn’t see it that way.

Shortly after his trade from the Seahawks to the Raiders became official, Flynn said he thinks the Raiders are capable of being a very good team, and that they’re in the early stages of building a team that could be great.

I want to be a part of something special,” Flynn said, “and that’s a big possibility here, of building something special, building a winning environment and building a really great organization. That’s part of the plan.”

Flynn said he has won where he’s been before, and he doesn’t expect that to change.

“I’ve been pretty fortunate,” Flynn said. “When you’re on good teams for that long, you just expect it.”

Flynn’s expectation isn’t one that most NFL fans share. If he can prove everyone wrong and lead the Raiders to a winning season, this trade will be something special for Oakland.

They must not have drug-tested him… if he thinks 6-10 is something special, then maybe he just has low standards.

  4. johart52 says: Apr 3, 2013 1:08 PM

Matt Flynn is just saying that because the Raiders paid him more than the Seahawks did. To be honest the Raiders over paid him.

Wow, building something special as a team. There’s a novel idea. Hard to believe this young guy gets that, but Palmer doesn’t.

Can not do any worse. Better days ahead, Raiders are getting rid of the Hotel California attitude and getting workers. Even Lechlar had become negative force in Raider camp. Spring cleaning is happening, sorry Tommy Kelly your moodiness got you moving to another city.

  18. whywerule says: Apr 3, 2013 1:16 PM

Every team is building something “special” in April and right through training camp. And then the regular season arrives and roughly 18 teams suck, 8 teams are serviceable or slightly better, and maybe the other six teams are SB contenders.

    Just another NFL offseason.

  19. jamaltimore says: Apr 3, 2013 1:17 PM

That’s funny stuff. History would say most in Raiders management appear to have graduated from Special Education courses. but nothing that happens on the field has been special for this team in a long time.

  20. sickoe47 says: Apr 3, 2013 1:17 PM

If reggie mckenzie can ace the draft and get some day 1 starters on defence and offence then you got something.

  21. nelly837 says: Apr 3, 2013 1:18 PM

Ha Ha that’s what son said when he was going through potty training “daddy I made something special” maybe that’s what Matt meant.

  22. tommyribs says: Apr 3, 2013 1:18 PM

I think the Raiders under Reggie McKenzie are definitely moving in a good direction, especially from the standpoint that they are ridding themselves of some really, really bad contracts and over-paid players.

I am a NY GIANTS fan, but I have always kind of liked the Raiders, and I think the NFL is just more fun when the Raiders are good, so I would like to see them move in the right direction.

Stability, and following the plan will be key for them though.

  25. marshawnlynchlookslikepredator says: Apr 3, 2013 1:19 PM

First off, what is he supposed to say? “Man this team stinks!” Secondly, after the last 12 years of falling apart, they are actually building for once. Maybe it’ll turn out to be something special. Raiders fans can only hope.

They are building a dispirited fan base that ceases to care about win loss records and cares more about the NFL draft, FA signings, and trades.

You know kinda like the Redskins.

  28. dprouse says: Apr 3, 2013 1:22 PM

I’m not a Raiders honk at all. (I’m a Vikings guy, destinated to have my heart ripped out in cruel and interesting new ways every season, like seeing Harvin leave.) Having said that, I think Flynn was one of the better options out there for a QB needy team this off-season, and I think the Raiders got a good one. Keep in mind that Flynn had a 72% completion rate for the Seahawks in pre-season last year. It’s not like Flynn looked terrible – far from it. It’s just that Russell Wilson blew them away, for obvious reasons.

There’s a biting irony to having Jamarcus Russell’s backup taking over in Oakland, but I think Flynn makes the Raiders better instantly, and that teams like the Bills will be kicking themselves for not trying to land him. Oh, and spare a thought for Bills fan as they live through a year of pretending that Kevin Kolb is an NFL calibre starter…

  29. jesse1834 says: Apr 3, 2013 1:23 PM

I wonder if he’ll say that if Boyd or Bridgewater take his job next year.

  30. raideralex99 says: Apr 3, 2013 1:25 PM

Reggie’s man … what do you expect him to say?
Behind closed doors he is really telling Reggie … “please please please get me some WRs who can catch the ball and run the right routes plus it would help if you got me an OC who knows football” … something Palmer did not have.
After looking at this years schedule … the Raiders might beat the Jags or Jets … that’s it … 2 win season. Yup that’s something special but Reggie did want to built the Raiders through the draft … lets see how he does with those top picks.

  31. skinsfan91 says: Apr 3, 2013 1:25 PM

  32. sicklnick121 says: Apr 3, 2013 1:26 PM

The Raiders have improved, our LBs are better and our defensive line was improved by Sims and the guy from Atlanta that plays just as good as Bryant (look at the stats) and we got him for 1/4 of the price. We need a pass rusher bad, that will make this defense solid, Draft one at 3 and bring back Carter. Our offense is full of play makers and led the league in YAC, Olson praised Gruden for teaching him so I see a short to mid pass attack with lots of motion, and a power blocking scheme. This team will compete, will they need a year, Maybe. I think we are better then KC and SD sorry. Hard to say we are better then Denver cause of Manning, But that doesnt mean we cant beat them.

He is right. Big Reg is building a team that will be competitive for many years to come. It may take a few years but once we are there think of the Packers. They are consistently good and are always in the running for a Superbowl. We need more players with Flynn’s type of attitude to be successful.

I like the Raiders, I like their rabid fan base that has stuck by their team thru the down years. I respect them, as a fellow homer of a team that hasn’t been good in years.

Unlike bandwagon cowgirls fans that have never been to texas, unlike bandwagon patriots fans that can’t name one QB that started for the team other than Tom Brady. Unlike bandwagon steelers fans that just mindlessly repeat “6 rings!!!” while rooting for their division rival ravens in the superbowl like true losers.

In case youve been living in a cave, based on last year’s performance, Kansas City is the worst team in the league, and yes you stupid haters, that means worse than Oakland.

I like Alex Smith and as a Raider fan am bummed you guys got him but you havent won a game with him yet and your “Dream Team” last year was anything but and was the worst team in the league.

Just a change back to the Power blocking scheme is going to make the Raiders significantly better. I seem to rememeber them running all over the Chiefs season before last.

I’m a Seahawks fan and the guy looked good to me. Would have happy to go into the season with him, but Russell Wilson is just another level of cat. No reflection on Flynn to be beat out by him.

Flynn survived being submerged by Jamarcus in his heyday and Rodgers in his. He has guts, determination and craftiness. And his girlfriend was Miss Louisiana.

I’m expecting him to become the Raiders’ new Snake. Stabler was another guy who had to sit behind a top qb in college (Joe Namath) and who was not known for his strong arm. And still managed to lead the Raiders to a Super Bowl win.

Maybe the year in Seattle gave him some of Pete Carroll’s determined optimism. Say it often enough and loudly enough and it just might come true. Go for it, Matt.

You cannot compare a modern franchise to one set in the 1970s being ran by a senile owner who used to know football. The Raiders have to gut the entire team in order to recover from it. I’ll be rooting for Flynn, which is really odd for a Seahawks fan to be rooting for the Raiders. But, when Al Davis died, I really had no reason to keep hating them and have been rooting for them in the AFC. Now that Flynn is their QB, I’ll really be rooting for them to win the AFC West. It would be great to see Flynn lead the Raiders to a rousing victory over the overrated Broncos.

And Flynn really was a good QB for the Seahawks. If not for a Terrell Owens drop on a beautifully thrown back-shoulder deep pass (that would have been a sure TD), Flynn most likely would have been the starter last season for the Seahawks. When he came in to relieve Wilson, he looked good as well. He’s a great QB. The Raiders got a great bargain for a couple late picks.

Sure we might not have been to the playoffs in a long time and have been downright horrible, but everyone of you ‘fans’ of other teams know that when its your team’s turn to play the Raiders, there is always a possibility of your team losing, no matter how bad the Silver & Black is…. Flynn was not even signed last year by his former OC turned head coach. If he was the real deal Philbin would have signed him. This is an act of desperation by the failed GM McKenzie. His moves last year destroyed a good offense. The only bright spots on the team last year had no interest in coming back. Wheeler is gone .Myers is gone .Palmer is gone. Lechler is gone. His big signing Brisiel was a bust. The two db’s he signed to start did next to nothing except get injured and when they did play they got burned over and over.

Elway didn’t “get” the Donks to the postseason after going 4-12 the previous year. They went .500 and won the division by default because the pre-McKenzie Raiders collapsed at the end of the season. Elway also inherited a better roster than Oakland’s and a manageable cap situation.

I love the taste of tears of jealousy. MMMM, so sweet. Fact is, only “horse face” had the skill and power to bring Manning on board. You had GM’s and coaches chasing his jet across the U.S. like dogs after the ice cream truck but only Elway could offer him the expertise and commitment to give him the team he needed. Sit there and say you wouldn’t take Bowlen, Elway, Manning, and Fox over what you have or have had. Say it, your jealousy amuses me.

People forget how rebuilding of a team works. Now I don’t know exactly when their new GM arrived, but it takes atleast 3 years to turn around. Get your guys in and developed.

NE was terrible before they became a “dynasty”, the 9ers and Giants had some tough years before they were SB contenders.

I don’t see much AFC west football, but from what I gather SD is on the way down, and the Broncos could be in trouble at QB after Manning retires. which could put the Raiders near the top of the division in 3-4 seasons.

We have not had that since Gannon.

    Here’s hoping your right Flynn.

I want the Silver and Black back!

  89. raideralex99 says: Apr 3, 2013 2:45 PM

I have been a Raider for over 40 years and I can honesty say … this is the first time where I have totally lost interest in them. Reggie gutting the whole team and signing backups as starters and players who have been out of football is a bad sign.
Give me a break on how … Al ran the team into the ground and Reggie had to do this. Cutting the overpriced players who did not produce is fine but he turns around and signs an unproven QB for big $$ is nuts when he should have tried to improve the defence … the #1 problem … not the QB position.

  90. nflfolly says: Apr 3, 2013 2:46 PM

Not sure why Raider fans would bash Elway except
for them being IQ deficient. Last year the Broncos destroyed the Raiders in both games easily. Elway has already won more while Reggie took the team to
one of the worst in Raiders history.

Wow, gotta love all the haters coming out of the woodwork!!

If the Silver & Black is so terrible, then why do you feel the need to chime in and state the obvious, is it jealousy? Sure we might not have been to the playoffs in a long time and have been downright horrible, but everyone of you ‘fans’ of other teams know that when its your team’s turn to play the Raiders, there is always a possibility of your team losing, no matter how bad the Silver & Black is…. (directed at you KC, SD and Steeler fans)

    Hate on, haters…
    ———————————————————-
Okay, well I’m glad at the end there you qualified it by directing it at the teams in your division, cuz I gotta tell ya a secret…….NO other teams enter a game against the Raiders in fear of possibly losing to them. Actually, most teams look forward to a chance to pummel em, thus restoring any lost confidence, or simply chalking up a easy win. Oh, and we chime in not out of jealousy, but rather out of pride because, with the exception of the Browns and maybe Jaguars, no team has been perpetually worse for as long as the Oakland Raiders.

Flynn seems to be saying your PR-basics in his initial interviews. I don’t really see a lot of news here, and the story seems like one leading the commenters to just rip on the Raiders, so I’m not really sure what is accomplished.

I’m about the biggest Raider fan there is and I don’t even believe that “we’re building something special” crap. You can’t build anything special when your GM doesn’t know how to hire coaches. Dennis Allen, Greg Knapp, Steve Hoffman, Frank Pollack, Tarver, and now Greg Olson????? Nothing special is being built here.

This coaching staff is already making the Hue Jackson era look like the “glory days”.

  100. ulyssesroams says: Apr 3, 2013 3:10 PM

The truth is the Raiders could be the 2nd best team in the AFC West. Right now it goes like this:

Bronco’s: right now the best in the division…but you have problem. Having a quarter of your salary base invested in your quarterback will drain your team defensively over time. You already lost Dumerville…plus your quarterback has never been awesome in cold weather. Manning is awesome but remember how the sting of a New England winter game always effected him.

Raiders: My team whether they win or lose has been a mess lately but I believe in rebuilding the defense and getting the salary cap under control.

Chargers: Underperformers with their talent. Way too many interceptions at key moments. I personally believe Rivers bad attitude has leaked down through the rest of the organization…free agent loses, ect are going to hurt them.

Chiefs: The only retread supercoach who ever worked was Parcells. Everybody else is always a dumpster fire waiting to happen. They are even farther away than us.

Good news however is that the whole AFC West is a lot like the NFC West two years ago. At the time it was the worst division in football…now it’s one of the strongest with good games every week. The AFC West should be the same very soon.

  105. lurkerkerker says: Apr 3, 2013 3:45 PM

Three of the AFC West teams are in re-build mode, and the other’s season is solely reliant on their HoF QB’s fragile neck. I’m far from a Raider fan, but with Granny Davis out of the way, maybe they can actually build a good team. Probably a few seasons away, but so are my Chargers.

  108. raiderlyfe510 says: Apr 3, 2013 3:53 PM

You can not build anything special with basic coaches!!!

Whatever we’re building with this coaching staff will be reset next year when we have new coaches. The Raiders are no longer THE RAIDERS. The Raiders are just another team in the NFL, now. We don’t do things the Raider Way anymore. We do things like every other team now. There’s nothing special about doing things like everybody else does it. Doing things like everybody else leads to mediocrity. The path to greatness has to be trail blazed. That what Al Davis was..,, a Trail blazer in his prime and that’s what the Raiders are about….chasing greatness.

  109. hawks1124 says: Apr 3, 2013 3:56 PM

I’m waiting for somebody to really lay the the shoulder to Manning, and his neck to snap backwards hard . He should have stopped playing, but at this point I think it’s more ego. If we’re ever see a player die on the field I’d give him a 20% odds it’s going to be him.

Flynn will do good in Oakland, but if Manning stays healthy the division is his.

  110. JSpicoli says: Apr 3, 2013 3:57 PM

  111. MyTeamsAllStink says: Apr 3, 2013 3:58 PM

the Raiders are doing exactly what they should do.Get rid of overpaid underproducing players and get cost effective solid vets who may fit the system and attitude they are trying to install there.Sorry but they aren’t ready to win now.Maybe if Al Davis had not messed everything up (I compared him to Castro many times) the Raiders would be in better shape and not always picking at the top of the draft.

  112. goodtunes82 says: Apr 3, 2013 4:02 PM

Reggie Mckenzie is building this team the right way. The process of building depth on a bad team will take awhile, however it will be worth the wait. Not a Raiders fan, but very interested to watch their growth.

I used to hate the Raiders when the Hawks were in the AFC. I’ve since redirected those feelings across the Bay, to the C-Stick Home for Aging Football Veterans. I truly believe that Flynn, will be good for the Raiders. Anyone who watched Russell Wilson play last season, after the handcuffs came off in Chicago, has to realize why Carroll, went with him. But that should not be telling you that Matt, isn’t a very good QB. Besides, you’re rid of the overpaid drama queen. Now the silver and black can concentrate on football, and get better at it.

What have the Broncos won in the last 10 years, We been to a super bowl last. We have more titles in this division then any other team. Manning is the regular season king then he becomes the post season clown. He wishes he was half as good as his brother. He sucks or is average at best in big moments. You will never win a title with him. Your a JOKE!

Read what I wrote I just said our team is improved and will compete, and better then KC or SD. I didnt say they were better then your DONKS so learn to read

  122. torturedraiderfan says: Apr 3, 2013 4:39 PM

I think Reggie explained to Flynn what the strategy is for building the team and it probably sounded good. I believe the plan is to get rid of all the high-profile, overpaid, underperforming players (Seymore, DBH, Routt, Huff, Palmer, etc) and fill the roster with low priced players that may lack a high profile, but play hard every down. Those guys will fill the starting spots for awhile, but as the team gets out of the cap hell, he can they can start to fill in some higher profile players that are good locker room leaders. The lower profile guys then become dependable back ups. I’m just guessing, but that’s not a bad way to build a team. Just gotta be patient.

  126. radrntn says: Apr 3, 2013 6:00 PM

well I don’t think they can do any worse than we did last year. Gregg “i want to take a ” Knapp offense is gone. Plus a bunch of new hungry young blood, compared to a bunch of over paid primma donnas can’t hurt either. Raiders will have about 80 million in cap space next year to do some shopping plus will receive quite a few compensatory picks for the 11 or so UFA’s that we have lost this year, that have all signed multi million dollar deals.

With that said wondering what we are going to do with the #1 pick in next years draft. If Flynn or Pryor look solid we will go with a DE like Clowney to go along with Floyd or Loutoui from this year, and if not select a franchise QB like Bridgewater , Manziel, Mariota, Boyd, Miller , Fales, , Thomas etc….could all be there…..raiders are still a work in progress. For the first time they are rebuilding , instead of reloading.
