Redskins bring back Rex Grossman, again

Rex Grossman AP

Rex Grossman’s three-year tenure with the Redskins will continue.

Grossman, a first-round pick of the Bears way back in 2003, has re-signed with a team that may soon have four quarterbacks under contract.

A 13-game starter in 2011, Grossman made no appearances in 2012, following the arrival of rookies Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins.  Multiple reports indicate that the Redskins also will sign Pat White, which would give them two mobile quarterbacks and a pair of pocket passers.

They may need one more quarterback for offseason workouts and training camps, given Griffin’s recovery from a torn ACL.

Can’t wait to hear what “Logicalvoicessays” aka a PFT employee who uses that handle to post nonsense has to say about the greatest back-up in history

  5. lightcleric says: Apr 3, 2013 2:41 PM

Well, now they have things covered if they ever get into a situation where they need to throw an interception late in the game.

  6. treymen says: Apr 3, 2013 2:47 PM

I dont know why they just don’t hire him as an assistant QB coach. That way he can get paid and it won’t go against the cap.

    Dream Team.

  8. logicailvoicesays says: Apr 3, 2013 2:49 PM

How many teams have a Super Bowl QB as their FOURTH string QB? Only the Redskins are that good. That’s why the Redskins are perennial Super Bowl winners.

  9. romosmicrodongs says: Apr 3, 2013 2:49 PM

    @lightcleric rofl

in all seriousness he has operated shannys playbook for three years and is a serviceable backup at no. 3.

and it would be bad if someone who has intimate knowledge of the playbook were signed by someone like the cowboys or eagles or most likely the giants.

He is Kyle Shanahans BFF, he will always have a job as long as Kyle does. But agreed he should just retire and join the coaching staff in some capacity.

  17. nineroutsider says: Apr 3, 2013 2:59 PM

    I see the thinking here.

    Pat White = camp legs
    Rex Grossman = camp arm

Does anyone else get the feeling that Pat White and Rex Grossman will both wearing the same RG3 costume with Pat as the legs and Rex as the arms?

  18. blueballz77 says: Apr 3, 2013 3:04 PM

There going to need him just in case their Starting Qb Kirk Cousins gets hurt during the course of the 16 games he will start this year.

  19. rickywatts80 says: Apr 3, 2013 3:04 PM

Unbelieveable that Rex Grossman will still be cashing NFL paychecks.

Bringing in a couple of arms this week. Maybe RG3 is not going to be ready to start the season.

  24. mogogo1 says: Apr 3, 2013 3:13 PM

Why isn’t he an assistant coach? Many teams don’t carry three QBs and even those that do seldom have all three active, meaning that even if RG3 and Cousins got hurt in the same game Grossman still wouldn’t get in the game. I don’t get having Grossman as a player any more.

Didn’t know anyone remembered Ricky Watts, let alone use as a moniker…. Wow, what a legacy for Watts, he sure did nothing on the field to deserve it, he was the first cut Ditka made when he took over for the Bears.

Make fun of Rex all you like, but remember 2 critical factors-
    1. Rex made more last year than anyone posting on this site
    2. Rex has exactly DOUBLE the number of playoff wins as Tony Romo!!
    @HAILSUCKAHS

  28. theclaim says: Apr 3, 2013 3:17 PM

Nineroutsider, since our debate about the cap hit my Skins took, I have read more than a few of your posts and from one REAL football fan to another I appreciate your honesty and insight even if it ISN’T about your team. It’s refreshing! It’s rare to see people comment on this site that speak as fans of the GAME and not just rhetoric spewing rants based on MY TEAM IS BETTER AND YOURS SUCKS. You have my respect The Claim

So Bobby Griffin is the 3rd stringer now? Behind White and Grossman? They might be able to get a late 7th rounder for the always injured Bobby G

  39. foldallpairs says: Apr 3, 2013 3:45 PM

When he finally vanishes from the league, this is what I will remember Rex Grossman for:

He is the only player in all my years of playing Madden that I caused a Career Ending Injury to.

Love the hate for the reigning NFL offensive ROY, setter of two NFL all time rookie passing records, and QB of the NFL East division champions. Please come back and share with us again when RG3 is back winning games next season, and remind us how smart you all are.

  47. seattlecoug says: Apr 3, 2013 4:32 PM

He didn’t win a playoff game.

  48. slew55 says: Apr 3, 2013 4:34 PM

Looks like the ‘Skins just surpassed the Cards for the deepest QB bench!

  49. cuda1234 says: Apr 3, 2013 4:58 PM

Never understood the hatred for the original RGIII.

Rexy won in high school, won at Florida and almost won the Heisman. He’s been a starter in the NFL, player of the week and month, started a SuperBowl. He stays out of trouble and the media. He’s had a nice 10-year NFL career and there are still people in the media ragging on him. What’s up with that?

  50. orakpownd says: Apr 3, 2013 6:46 PM

Well if RG is hurt and Cousins can’t go. Grossman can come in and get us at least 2 wins against the Giants..am I right? Im right.

Rex Grossman : Redskins :: Charlie Batch : Steelers

  52. jacktheraven says: Apr 3, 2013 9:06 PM

Hey logicalVoice. Did you see Maryland’s team at The Maryland State House for a trophy presentation? I wonder where the skins would take their SB trophy ( if they ever win one again). DC City Hall?

  53. thesmartestmanever says: Apr 4, 2013 1:56 AM

last time I saw Rex he was lighting it up for something like eighteen straight completions. I mean it was pre season, but still he knows this offense.

  54. humbleminded85 says: Apr 4, 2013 1:07 PM

How many of you skins fans know that “Fight for Ol Dc” replaced the original racial line that said ” Fight for old dixie”? True story, just look it up if you think I’m kidding.

  55. orakpownd says: Apr 6, 2013 12:00 PM

Everyone knows its “fight for ol Dixie” …wish it would have stuck. and Please clarify what is racist about Dixie?

  56. thesmartestmanever says: Apr 6, 2013 1:15 PM

@orakpownd, here are just a few of the things wrong with your post. they are the Washington Redskins, Washington was never a part of Dixie, and was probably the polar opposite of what Dixie stood for. second they are the Washington Redskins and the native Americans they are representing ( I use that term loosely) never cared for the north or the south. as for what is racist about Dixie? I won’t even go there.
