Barkley won’t be attending the draft

Barkley AP

The long list of players who have accepted an invitation to attend the draft at Radio City Music Hall won’t include USC quarterback Matt Barkley.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Barkley has decided not to accept an invitation to attend.  Barkley has opted instead to spend the evening his family and friends that night.

Some will suspect that he also decided not to risk a long night in the green room for round one, and then a return for the second evening of the draft.

As one source estimates it, 50 or 60 players genuinely believe they’ll be taken in the first round.  It’s safe to say that, regardless of who gets drafted on Thursday, April 25, that number eventually will be capped at 32.

Makes sense, as he won’t be drafted until Saturday. ‘Least he knows it, too.

i’d hope a third or fourth round pick wouldn’t be there

  5. cardiovascularendurance says: Apr 4, 2013 2:45 PM

He might not get drafted in the first round, but he won’t be lasting into Saturday. He’ll certainly get picked on Friday.

It’s like choosing between waiting for the bus or slipping in quickly to use the washroom. If you go to use the washroom, the bus comes along as soon as you’re too far away to catch it. If you wait, it won’t come until after you pee your pants.
So Matt will probably come off the board in the first couple of picks if he stays home, and will be in the bathroom when the announcement is made.

Of course he doesn’t want to be embarrassed when he doesn’t. Go in the first

Unless you are a lottery pick I would think it would be dicey to attend, honestly. Over the years of ESPN’s coverage there have been some uncomfortable moments watching people sitting there who didn’t go until the second round

This kid is gonna be the best quarterback in this draft by far. Everyone says he’s not athletic he can’t throw the deep ball etc… But I think he is gonna be a star in the NFL I don’t care what anybody says I see the next drew Brees here

Barkley seems like the eating lunch in the car type like Nnamdi.

    Matt Barkley

    1) Did not go to compete at the Senior Bowl
    2) Did not want to throw at the NFL Combine
    3) Will not attend NFL Draft
    4) Will not be drafted until 2nd or 3rd round!

    Kid has no heart!

It’s a proven fact that all USC QBs are the same.

Whatever, it’s his choice. If i wasn’t certain I’d be going in the 1st round, I’d rather spend draft day with my family in Cali, too.

Why criticize him for it? These nerds saying he has no heart are ignorant and just plain stupid.

  15. kd75 says: Apr 4, 2013 3:54 PM

Why would he turn down a free weekend at The Plaza or Waldorf or Carlyle, dinner at Daniele or Lutece and a Yanks or Mets game?

Sounds like a fun trip to me.

I don’t know why any of these guys would attend.
The NFL wants them there for theatre.
The camera close-up every time they don’t get picked.
    I wouldn’t do it either.

He doesn’t want to be hugged by Goodell. It’s kind of creepy the way he does that.

Actually, numb nuts, he had off-season shoulder surgery and was advised not to compete in the Senior Bowl or throw at the combine.

And I don’t think teams really care if the guy is sitting there or not. It won’t effect their decision to pick him at all.

I often wondered why these guys don’t spend that last chance with their families.

  20. notwerk says: Apr 4, 2013 4:14 PM

Better than watching awkwardly as he plummets down the draft order. It was painful watching Brady Quinn get stood up. Actually, that comparison might be quite apt now that I think about it.

  21. blacknole08 says: Apr 4, 2013 4:34 PM

I don’t blame him for not attending. It’s nice getting the cap and jersey, but it seems too commercialized now. Plus too much media, too many talking heads.

I like when athletes are at home and get the phone call that they have been drafted. Russell Wilson definitely comes to mind. Seems more authentic.

It’s interesting that a lot of teams have half-a$$ed the QB position as to NOT reach for one in the 1st.

    The Chiefs got Alex Smith

    Raiders got Flynn.

    Cardinals got Palmer

    The Eagles kept Vick

    The Cowboys extended Romo.

    The Browns imported Campbell

The Bills (and maybe the Jets) seem like the only team who didn’t insure themselves at QB this off-season, but the Bills are always linked to Nassib, not Geno Smith or Barkely.

When he goes bald, he is going to look like Matt Hasselbeck version 2.0 and probably play like him too.

I actually didn’t mind watching Quinn plummet only because he seemed so arrogant about it.

Haha this is the same kid that believed he would’ve been drafted ahead of Robert griffin last year

  26. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Apr 4, 2013 8:00 PM

Barkley got the kiss of death from Florio’s prediction that he would go early in the draft. Now he will just sit and wait at home for a phone call about 3 days into the draft.

  27. ytownjoe says: Apr 4, 2013 9:26 PM

Smart kid. Colt McCoy had to wait until the third round. He was smart enough to wait for the call at home.

Bold prediction, Florio. As a Panther fan, I’m fully expecting the Rog to pull more ‘evidence’ out of his hat and swipe the Aints first round pick for something like jaywalking. Nothing would make me happier!
