Cardinals to have private workout with Matt Barkley

Matt Barkley AP

The Cardinals braintrust is either creating an elaborate ruse, or just wanted to get away to Los Angeles for the weekend.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians and general manager Steve Keim will have a private workout with Southern Cal quarterback Matt Barkley Saturday.

While the responsible thing to do is to scout everyone, there seems little rational reason for the Cards to spend much time on Barkley. After trading for Carson Palmer to start and bringing in Drew Stanton, the Cards seem set for the short term.

But beyond that, Barkley doesn’t have the kind of big arm that would seem to fit Arians’ downfield-passing style.

But evaluate they must, in case anyone else really decides they like Barkley, and needs to get into the top seven to get him.

Why does it have to be a ruse? Teams are doing their due diligence this time of year as they prepare for the draft.

You’d think that after the Leinart debacle, the Cards would’ve learned their lesson with USC quarterbacks.

They didn’t learn their lesson yet about over-hyped USC QBs? Stupid is as stupid does.

Yeah, you’d think that after the Heath Shuler debacle, teams would also shy away from Tennessee QBs.

All the Cards should be thinking about now is building an O-line to protect those QBs they’ve already got. But that would make sense, so clearly that’s not what they’ll do.

You guys make me laugh, I guess that because Leinart and Sanchez were busts that makes every USC BQ a bust? That’s great logic there, what happened in the past happened and Barkley isn’t the same player.

Oh no! Not anothre USC prima donna:( The Cards never learn…Leinert, Palmer, Barkley…and Keim thinks he is some kind of scouting genius..Pffffft!

Oh, just to give you an idea, here’s a list of USC quarterbacks who have actually played in the NFL.

Mark Sanchez, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Sean Salisbury, Rodney Peete, Pat Haden, Matt Cassel, Bill Nelsen, Pete Beathard, Vince Evans, Paul McDonald, Todd Marinovich, Rob Johnson and John David Booty.

Not particularly impressive names, are they?
