Patriots not considering signing Terrell Owens

Terrell Owens AP

Tom Brady and Terrell Owens are working out together. But they’re not going to be teammates.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports that nothing is going on between the Patriots and Owens.

Because Brady and Owens are working out together in Los Angeles (along with players including Danny Amendola and Matt Cassel), and because the Patriots could use another receiver, speculation arose that perhaps the Patriots would consider Owens. But that sounds more like idle talk during a slow time in the offseason than like something Bill Belichick would actually consider.

Owens, who will turn 40 in December, still wants to play in the NFL. But he lasted less than three weeks in Seahawks training camp last summer, and hasn’t played in a regular-season game since 2010. It’s hard to see Owens making it back in the NFL, and if he does, it won’t be in New England.

Brady just felt sorry for the guy and wanted him to catch a pass from a Superbowl MVP..

  3. cliffordc05 says: Apr 4, 2013 7:17 PM

Owens was well behaved in Seattle. His only problem was that he couldn’t catch the ball.

  4. thingamajig says: Apr 4, 2013 7:18 PM

The Pats are just saying that so no one snatches Owens up until his workouts with Brady are finished and analyzed.

  11. bobonmycob says: Apr 4, 2013 7:34 PM

Owens back as a Patriot would be pretty awesome. Especially if he actually lit it up and worked well with Brady… of course this is all coming from a non-patriots fan…. but yeah

  12. ripster65 says: Apr 4, 2013 7:35 PM

“that sounds more like idle talk during a slow time in the offseason” but PFT could still muster a piece about it.

Headline (if there even is one here) could/should have read “Everybody not considering Terrell Owens”.

So it could also read “Patriots not considering Matt Cassel (or any of the other players that are there)”.

Now, go ahead and delete this immediately.

I’d be willing to bet more than your favorite team. The Patriots will win the next 5 Super Bowls. The Steelers average age is 36. The Ravens Have a 20million Mark Sanchez clone and the Option QB offense will be exposed for the joke it is.

The headline should have said “Duh”.

I don’t think Terrell Owens has gotten credit that he deserves for being a better person, but his history is now making him the first headline for every slow news week.

If he has no team next season he shouldn’t be mocked. He should be treated with grace when he enters retirement.

  30. raiderapologist says: Apr 4, 2013 7:58 PM

Owens worked out with Palmer last offseason, leading to speculation he might sign with the Raiders. Nothing came of that, either.

They put on their Tilley hats and plus fours. Tuck in their floral design button up shirts and go for a brisk walk in the park. The wives are off playing bridge. Later they’ll all get together for lawn bowling at the Center. Afterwards a nap and a soft, easily digestable lunch. Not forgetting to get some fibre. Maybe rent an old movie and in bed by 8. It’s a good life and they worked hard and saved their money for these years.

  32. sanfranfanyouknowit says: Apr 4, 2013 7:59 PM

  34. mikebrownfaux says: Apr 4, 2013 8:01 PM

He actually did well in the last regular season he had… It was the team he was on that stunk it up.. I can’t believe after his stellar year in Cincy, that he hasn’t received more offers, if it had been any other player on the comeback, with a year like that, they would have likely earned themselves another decent contract.. T.O. however, seemed to have tooted his own horn a little too much, and even after having a good year, it was just too risky with the injury for NFL teams to take on… However, I wouldn’t doubt one bit, if he was signed by someone, that he could come in have another year like he did in Cincinnati.. He is a workout machine, and his ability to heal from injuries is almost super human..

Owens was not well hehaved in Seattle, he was let go because he was (is) a constant complainer and whiner. Only a complete fool would have anything to do with Terrell Owens! P.S. you are absolutely correct though he dropped the ball a lot just like he did in the Championship game against the Packers except he wasn’t lucky enough to be hanging around to make up for all the drops by catching a game winning touchdown!!!

  70. competitivecompetitioncompeter says: Apr 5, 2013 1:14 AM

    TO = Too Old.

His last preseason game with the ‘Hawks, his second to last target: TV broadcast showed a replay using camera angle from the far endzone, where TO ran a mid-breaking drag route. Inside release, push up the field in the seam, cut in from the hash, sink down into soft spot vacated by LBs. It’s a crosser, in order to beat man, and the WR gets to sit down wherever he wants, to defeat zone.

This play he had Champ Bailey on him. It was a perfect example of the defender running the receiver’s route for him so much so that I recorded it (by pointing my phone at the TV) and show it to my son as a teaching aid. Now, Champ Bailey has lost a step or 3, to the point where we should be talking about him moving to safety, but TO is a HOF-conversation guy too. Running a crossing route, against single coverage, TO had no chance.

Flynn threw him open anyway, but TO didn’t come back for the ball enough and Bailey defensed it perfectly.

You could tell Carroll had flat out ordered Flynn to force the ball to TO, because they went right back to him on a 9 route. Owens had a hard time adjusting to the ball, but got his hands on it anyway. Clang. 4th down.

He’s done. I’d expect Moss to come back first. Hey, he can wear his own throwback jersey, how cool would that be?

  71. hotzy21 says: Apr 5, 2013 2:24 AM

What have the Patriots won since getting busted for cheating????????

In the six seasons since the Pats lost a draft pick and were fined for ignoring an NFL memo, they have won five AFC East division titles, and two AFC championship games. No question that is far from perfect, but it is a record every fan of every other AFC East team (and all but fans of the SB winning teams in that time period) wishes their team had posted in that time frame.

  73. flastrat says: Apr 5, 2013 8:07 AM

Who are these *idiots* that keep posting about cheating? In a billion dollar business, everyone looks for an advantage. Besides, the real reason that the Patriots haven’t won in a while is because the NFL made the “Patriots rule”. BB was a master at having his coverage bump the receiver off the line. So, to even the playing field, the NFL made a rule so it was illegal to do some of that hitting.

Hey, idiot, you want to say that Ali wasn’t a great champ because he kept his glove on the back of his opponent’s head? You want to say that Jordan wasn’t great because the NBA gave him that extra step? You want to say that Shaq wasn’t great because the NBA allowed him to push off with his shoulders before shooting? You want to say that LeBron isn’t great just because the NBA allows him to push off with his arm when he drives to the hoop and that the NBA allows him to stay in the ref’s ear while they call technicals on opposing teams for doing that? Please!

As for T.O., I say, if he can run the 40 in 4.4, sign him up. Period.

  74. lo6icalvoice says: Apr 5, 2013 8:18 AM

  76. j0esixpack says: Apr 5, 2013 9:21 AM

The Patriots went 16-0 after they violated a 2006 rule in early 2007.

Since that time they also have the best record in the NFL.

That’s not exactly the “proof” that they can’t win without “cheating” that some fans seem to think it is.

  77. dirtydrew says: Apr 5, 2013 9:43 AM

If you were less of an a hole, you might get another shot. But now your broke, and have nowhere to go. Sad T.O. As a Niners fan, I watched the whole sad predictable train wreck.

  78. steelerben says: Apr 5, 2013 11:06 AM

In other news, the Patriots are not considering relasing Tom Brady or moving Rob Gronkowski to Defensive End.

Isn’t iknoweverything the one that was talking about the Kansas City Chiefs dynasty under Andy Reid? I’d be angry at the Patriots if I was a Kansas City fan, too. It was dirty and underhanded the way that the Pats convinced them that Matt Cassel was a franchise quarterback.

  79. cowpiesnotcowboys says: Apr 5, 2013 1:03 PM

TO is broke, and playing football is the only thing he’s remotely qualified to do to earn an income. He’ll probably still be trying to get back in the NFL when he’s 45.
