Anthony Davis celebrates his contract by taking a shot at Schiano

San Diego Chargers v Tampa Bay Buccaneers Getty Images

When 49ers offensive tackle Anthony Davis played at Rutgers, his coach was current Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano. The two of them didn’t always see eye to eye. And so today when Davis signed a five-year, $37.3 million contract extension with the 49ers, he decided to take a little shot at Schiano to celebrate.

In a tweet that he later deleted, Davis wrote about a conversation he once had with Schiano, in which Schiano had told Davis that Davis wouldn’t last in the NFL, beyond his rookie contract.

“You will be a 1 contract and done kinda guy in the NFL. – Greg Schiano,” Davis wrote on Twitter.

It’s long been known that Davis and Schiano butted heads at Rutgers, especially over Davis’s weight. At one point Schiano lamented that he couldn’t fine Davis for being overweight the way an NFL coach could, and so he did the only thing he could do to get Davis’s attention and demoted Davis to second string for failing to make weight. But Schiano probably deserves some credit for the way he got on Davis’s case about conditioning: Davis showed up to Rutgers as a fat 363-pound freshman and left Rutgers as a 323-pound stud whom the 49ers took with the 11th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft. And when Davis announced that he was leaving Rutgers to enter the draft, Schiano said, “There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s ready and that he’ll be dominant in that league.”

If Schiano actually told Davis that he’d only last long enough in the NFL to get one contract, then Davis proved Schiano wrong. But Schiano may have been telling Davis that he’d only last long enough in the NFL to get one contract unless Davis worked hard and stayed in shape. If that was what Schiano was saying, then that’s just good coaching.

And so Schiano may deserve some of the credit for Davis’s success. Even if Davis doesn’t plan to send him a thank-you note.

Schiano has been wrong in every decision he’s made since he got to Mickey Mouse land. Keep signing those high-priced FA’s, college boy! You see how far it got you last year.

  2. fredsingleton says: Apr 5, 2013 7:33 PM

Schiano is a tool. Everyone knows that from the Giants game.

  3. tonyc920 says: Apr 5, 2013 7:33 PM

What an idiot ! The guy should be thanking his ex coach for riding his butt, mentally challenging Davis to change his lazy a$$ habits. His coach made him a millionaire and this is the thanks he gets ?? I hope you blow out a knee Anthony, what a jerk !

  4. norcalmafia says: Apr 5, 2013 7:33 PM

Great player but his immaturity shows..Someone needs to tell him to delete his twitter account..This is not the first time hes popped off on twitter..Hes being payed because he will eventually take over at left tackle when Staley leaves this guy is a mauler in the run game…Go 9ers!

  5. escoboltsfan says: Apr 5, 2013 7:34 PM

The 9ers shouldn’t have given Anthony Davis that kind of money, most left tackles shouldn’t get paid like that.

  6. gbditka says: Apr 5, 2013 7:34 PM

Boy, those football & basketball head coaches at Rutgers sure know how to motivate their players! Within 48 hours we’ll see video of Schiano throwing biscuits at Davis in the cafeteria.

  9. classyjacklambert says: Apr 5, 2013 7:38 PM

Schiano seems like a hard working kind of guy that works to motivate his players. It’s hard to see if he is really the jerk a lot of players claim he is because there is no telling whether they are prima donnas that feel entitled due to their previous experiences or not. There’s always two sides to every story.

  10. tiredofblatheringnflexperts says: Apr 5, 2013 7:39 PM

Maybe just maybe Davis should be thanking Schiano for keeping him motivated. Instead of being a 300+ lb baby!

  11. 49ers6rings says: Apr 5, 2013 7:41 PM

    You tell em’ Anthony!

To think a perennial loser organization like the Bucs have the nerve to insult NFL royalty.

Kaepernick will be Top 5 QB in 2013. The kid is superior. And with Anthony Davis up front this 49 team is Superbowl bound.

I feel sorry for you other guys…

  12. necr0philia says: Apr 5, 2013 7:42 PM

I say the two of them get in a Thumb Wrestling Match. Best 2 out of 3 wins looser has to apologize. “Man I have over done it this time and went waaaaay out on a limb”!! I hope no one gets hurt!!

  14. hatesycophants says: Apr 5, 2013 7:47 PM

Might I suggest that Davis knows better than you the context in which Schiano made these statements? Schiano is a well known douche bag.

  15. kingpel says: Apr 5, 2013 7:49 PM

Now that he has proven everybody wrong, lets see what happens next. My prediction is 360 lbs by the time camp starts and an injury by the second preseason game.

  17. EJ says: Apr 5, 2013 7:50 PM

Motivation at its best. If you ask me, Schiano should be thanked, big time.
Davis should take $100,000 of that money and buy his former Coach a nice Lexus, with the license plate reading: -M O T O V 8 R-

  18. freemanmvp says: Apr 5, 2013 7:53 PM

Cant wait to 49ers come to Tampa this year and get imbarrassed.Remember this! because it’s coming!

  19. jturbo1402003 says: Apr 5, 2013 7:55 PM

Obviously if Davis remembers all of this very clearly & sub consciously used it in part as motivation then that is exactly what he needed to hear as a young immature teen about to make a boat load of $ of he can get his head & weight in check.

  20. bucsjake says: Apr 5, 2013 7:57 PM

Anthony Davis making comments like that, almost makes me want to predict that he will be thing kind of player who gets paid big money, and cut a few years later because he slacked off. Schiano is the man! Josh Freeman is NOT the man! Just wait until the Freeman experiment is over. Everyone will see how good of a coach this dude is. I don’t feel like we have overpaid for players at all (save Wright). We were desperate to 1) sign an experienced corner 2) Improve the team immediately. V-Jax and Nicks are so far so good. I got a good feeling about Goldson. Why not acquire talent? Schiano has already said we will not be major players in FA every year, but needed to fill a few holes until we can build the team thru the draft.

Anyways, back to Davis. How many Super Bowls has this guy won again?

  21. gotampabay52 says: Apr 5, 2013 8:00 PM

49ers 6 rings from whenever-80’s you were even born then go f your self its called coaching all that dont see that were boy scouts

  22. randallflagg52 says: Apr 5, 2013 8:05 PM

Is this the same Anthony Davis who got destroyed by Terrell Suggs last Thanksgiving, and then by Paul Kruger in the Super Bowl?

  23. sschmiggles says: Apr 5, 2013 8:06 PM

If my coach said that, I’d tweet the same thing.

Schiano didn’t do any of the hard work it took to get in shape. Davis did.

  24. realdealsteel says: Apr 5, 2013 8:10 PM

hmm. Let’s do a quick history lesson. How many running QB’s make it through an entire season without injury? They usually don’t. Now that Kapernick has to play an entire season, he won’t make it through and the 49ers will never see another Super Bowl appearance with Kapernick as the starter. Sorry. Running QB’s don’t win championships..never have, never will.

  25. thegreatgabbert says: Apr 5, 2013 8:10 PM

They butted bellies over weight. Like those Japanese guys.

  26. realdealsteel says: Apr 5, 2013 8:11 PM

And Steve Young is a QB that ran and learned how to pass to the point that he checked down to his third option. Which is something running QB’s don’t do.

  27. thraiderskin says: Apr 5, 2013 8:17 PM

So in the context of when Shiano said that, could that not have been true back then? Obviously Davis has controlled his weight, but is what Shiano said mean or eye opening?

  28. vaphinfan says: Apr 5, 2013 8:19 PM

Did this guy ever think that may have motivated him to be better. Hope hes out of the league in 2 years

  29. Rutgersknight says: Apr 5, 2013 8:24 PM

Anthony Davis and Kenny Britt, two of the top recruits ever at Rutgers, were the biggest prima donnas ever when they were on the team. As a matter of fact, they were suspended for smoking pot together during their time on the Banks.

Both should thank their lucky stars that Schiano kept them above water enough to get them to be first round draft picks. Davis was a constant underachiever who was drafted on potential alone. I’m happy he has turned things around and excelled in the NFL (unlike screwup Britt), but this swipe at Schiano is really unfair. Maybe someone pointed this out and that’s why he deleted the tweet.

God, if there’s anything I love about seeing the Niners return to prominence on the field, it’s the return of their hilarious bandwagon fans. Everyone was a Niner fan until around 95-96, when it became fashionable to root for the Cowboys. That led to a sudden love affair with the Patriots and now it’s back to “OMG 6 RINGS!”.

Yeah, sure, the Bucs only have one but I love the fact that one of the wins came against such an overrated 49ers team, a team Skip Bayless said was unstoppable. Jeff Garcia didn’t come back to Tampa just to play QB – he came back to find the rest of his battered body that Simeon Rice left buried in the RJS grass.

“Schiano has been wrong in every decision he’s made since he got to Mickey Mouse land. Keep signing those high-priced FA’s, college boy! You see how far it got you last year.:

Dominik signed them. Considering how bad they were in 2011 and how much improvement they showed in 2012, what’s your logic? Vincent Jackson sure did his job and, until his injury, so did Carl Nicks. Again, you’ve got nothing.

  31. baymac408 says: Apr 5, 2013 8:31 PM

I live how Davis plays with a fire lit behind him on the field!! He plays with attitude and a chip on his shoulder!! I love it!! I don’t like when he pops off on his twitter! Keep it on the field Beast

  32. jerseyshoregiant says: Apr 5, 2013 8:31 PM

Let’s not pretend that Schiano did Anthony Davis any favors. It was actually Davis that did Schiano a favor by going there. The kid was the top high school offensive line prospect in the country coming out of high school. Most people in New Jersey thought he was going to Ohio State.

  33. si1m says: Apr 5, 2013 8:51 PM

Davis sucked in the super bowl; everyone saw it, Tsizzle had the cojones to actually call it out. congrats on having an agent like Rosenhaus get your $37m from the 49ers. should we meet again in the super bowl, I like our chances to expose Davis – again

  34. njgiant81 says: Apr 5, 2013 9:00 PM

There needs to be more people in this world to tell kids they’re not going to make anything out of themselves. Positive reinforcement doesn’t work. Kids need someone to prove wrong. Greg Schiano was that guy for Davis.

Obviously Schiano was saying those things to motivate him. The guy doesnt get it. Anthony Davis would be garbage if he didnt have elite motivators like Harbaugh & Schiano as his coaches…if he ended up in say SD with a Norv Turner he’d probably be a one & done guy

  42. footballfather says: Apr 5, 2013 9:41 PM

@fredsingleton – The Giants game didn’t prove that Schiano was a tool. It proved that every NY Giant involved in the end of that game is a tool, from the players to the coaches. If you’r not going to give 100% every play, don’t show up.

And no, I’m not a Bucs fan. As a matter of fact, I really dislike the Bucs. But I dislike the Giants more, and that game gave me one more reason to hate ‘em.

  43. manderxcom says: Apr 5, 2013 9:42 PM

People think Schiano is a jerk or a bully, but I respect the man. He turned that pansy franchise into a team that can compete. I think that if they double dip on CBs this upcoming draft, then they should be back into playoff contention.

    Make it happen!

There are a large number of bandwagon fans out there, but the irony is that for there to be bandwagon fans, that means that a team has to establish a history of repeated “success”. Many a person chasing a dream has met someone along the way who pushed them towards self improvement, who challenged them to reach greater heights, who dared them to strive for excellence. Often times these coach like figures play a pivotal role in a person’s quest for high achievement and one can look back with perspective at some point and recognize that the extra motivation might have been just what it took to reach a pinnacle. With a moment of clarity, one might even feel a bit of gratitude and humility. That moment appears to have eluded Mr. Davis.

  70. CKL says: Apr 6, 2013 2:01 AM

Man Davis really would have cried if he had Parcells. Parcells was known to do things like put an empty gas can in LT’s,(you know one of the best LBs ever), locker to mess with him about being out of gas. Being motivated by your coach riding your butt is exactly what they are looking for when they do it.

It’s common knowledge that Schiano is sort of a jerk, and I don’t mean in the way that most NFL head coaches are jerks, I mean above and beyond.

A good portion of his players from college don’t have terribly positive things to say about him, and he used to confine the pro scouts in what amounted to a pen with an awful vantage point. Sounds like the behavior of a man who could stand to have his faced rubbed in it on occasion.

Tampa is nearing the end of a quality rebuild. They are building to last…just like the Tampa 2 defense has outlasted any other team.

We all ready have an offense that is breaking all sorts of team records. Add a few pieces to the defense and the Bucs will be nearly unstoppable.

Heck, look at the games lost last year. At least 4 were the result of the defense giving up the leads. The Bucs were a hair from 11-5.

And then to just make it worse, Coughlin goes screaming at Schiano and made himself look like a fool.

Of course no one wants to mention the fists thrown by the Giants players for a perfectly legal play. Every NFL game I have gone to is 60 minutes. That means you play for 60 minutes.

Besides it’s not the first time that play has happened in the NFL.

The Giants were embarrassed on national TV. That’s why it got so much attention.

If Parcells had done it, it would have called a great play.

    Bunch of losers!!

Haters can yap all they want but it doesn’t change the fact that most prognosticators believe the Niners have the best offensive line in the league and it will be the best for some time to come.

Bucs fans, get ready to watch your team get pushed around when the Niners come to town next season.

Rutgers is known for their tough love programs, no?

Davis still needs a TE to help block…. Just a fact.

Classless Anthony Davis inspired by his classless head coach, Jim Harbaugh.

    What a dirty organization.

1st comment—Kellen Winslow was a good Sciano decision, as was Brian Price. & if you had a clue, you’d know Tampa isn’t Orlando…

    Schiano isn’t an ex Marine!

A Rutgers coach not getting along with an athlete, that is shocking. In all fairness motivating a player to get in shape is part of the job for a coach.

The Niners have 5 exceptional to good offensive linemen, and Davis is easily the worst (i.e. he is still a solid tackle Niners fans). Judging by his comments though, the kid needs to grow up. His current attitude makes me think he is more prone to blow his new income on something ridiculous than set up his family for their entire future.

Just good coaching sounds like to me! Listen , if Anthony remembered the conversation then Schiano did his job. Anthony was motivated enough to prove Schiano wrong. Get your toes on the line and stay in shape!

Keep it Davis and schiano talk fellas cause to all the Bucs fans trashing the niners, the Bucs got absolutely destroyed two yrs ago in candlestick. Dashon goldson hit mike Williams so hard he now has a Tampa jersey on.

And to the butthead saying kaep will get injured cause he’s a “running qb” you’ve obviously never seen his passing skills and can do both. He doesn’t get greedy with his legs. And you’re prob. A packers fan. I’m done here. Go niners!
