Flacco will play Unitas in portion of new movie

The son of Hall of Fame quarterback John Unitas plans to produce a film of his father’s life.  Playing the former Baltimore Colt in scenes regarding the team’s 1958 NFL title-game win will be the current Baltimore Raven who recently led the team to a Super Bowl title.

Joe Unitas tells the Baltimore Sun that Joe Flacco has agreed to don the Colts uniform and play the role of John Unitas.

“Obviously, the Baltimore ties are very important to me,” Unitas said.  “I think it’s great that Joe just won the Super Bowl with the Ravens and was Most Valuable Player in the game.  A lot of the way Joe plays and his demeanor reminds me a lot of my dad.  He’s not a rah-rah guy.  He throws a touchdown and maybe there’s a little fist pump.  He understands his job is all about winning and he does a phenomenal job leading the offense and the team and obviously they’ve developed a lot of trust after becoming a champion.  He’s an awesome teammate and great leader of the team.

“He does things the right way and is a good role model for kids and he gets what hard work is and does everything he can for the team.  There are a lot of parallels that can be drawn between Joe and my dad.  My production team is very fortunate and thankful that he’s dedicated to help us and play my dad.  I know he doesn’t do a lot of things away from the game, and football players’ time off in the offseason is very valuable.  For him to take time away and commit to doing this is very humbling.”

Filming is scheduled to begin on July 15, but cash could be an issue.  “We are under the gun to raise money,” Joe Unitas said.  “We’ve set up an opportunity for NFL fans from all over the country to invest into the film.  Those charities were two groups that were pretty important to my dad.  We’re very excited.”

The projected budget is $12.8 million, and proceeds will be donated to USA Football and Gridiron Greats.  Joe Unitas co-wrote the script, which is based on Tom Callahan’s biography Johnny U:  The Life and Times of Johnny Unitas.

More information about the film, titled Unitas We Stand, is available at the film’s official website.

They left out part of the quotes- “We wanted a qb that was ranked 12-15 among qbs, so Joe fit that description perfectly. We also wanted a vintage unibrow and someone that is extremely overpaid.”

Johnny U must’ve thrown a lot of check-downs in the 58 title game.

  8. thegreatgabbert says: Apr 6, 2013 11:32 PM

It’s funny, but the footballs seemed bigger back in the day when Unitas played. For some reason.

    Ha what a joke

  10. johnnyb216 says: Apr 6, 2013 11:37 PM

This must be a joke. Flacco wouldn’t even be worthy of getting Johnny U’s coffee.

Love it. Baltimore is football town USA. Best football team in the world.

  14. bobzilla1001 says: Apr 6, 2013 11:56 PM

These are the kinds of sideshows that prevent teams from repeating.
The irony to all this is, I’ve always thought that no one looked more like Unitas than Peyton Manning. Their body language (slumped shoulders, lack of mobility, usually expressionless) is nearly identical.

Let me know when they make a movie about

  16. number20pick6 says: Apr 7, 2013 12:04 AM

Check downs? I thought joe just heaved the ball into the air and Boldin bailed him out every pass… You guys need to get your hating right

  17. jdphx says: Apr 7, 2013 12:07 AM

Maybe Flacco can just bankroll the flick too…
Heck it’s only got a 12.8 Mil budget.

  18. sb34champs says: Apr 7, 2013 12:19 AM

Can’t you just get flacco to pay the $12.8 mil…..after all, it is for charity and last time I checked, he can afford it!

  19. lightcleric says: Apr 7, 2013 12:27 AM

I hope there’s a scene where Johnny Unitas talks about running off the sidelines and tackling a guy in Super Bowl V.

  20. muddert44 says: Apr 7, 2013 12:42 AM

How embarrassing that the son of one of the greatest quarterbacks ever thinks Joe Flacco should be associated with his father. But he’s an awesome teammate so it must be true.

  21. ttommytom says: Apr 7, 2013 12:50 AM

Get someone from Pittsburgh. Not someone who ran from Pittsburgh…

  22. rodge1 says: Apr 7, 2013 1:11 AM

Flacco’s contract used up the movie budget so they had to use him.

  30. davyholly says: Apr 7, 2013 2:28 AM

Flacco is 6’6″ while Unitas was 6’1″, guess reality doesn’t apply here?

  31. therealraider says: Apr 7, 2013 2:40 AM

Johnny Unitas .. Arguably the greatest QB ever, And his kid wants Sleepy Joe Flacco to play his dad. Thats just sad.

  32. saintsfan26 says: Apr 7, 2013 2:49 AM

I just think its weird that Joe Unitas, who is older than Joe Flacco, thinks that Joe Flacco reminds him of his dad. That is weird on several levels.

  33. tfbuckfutter says: Apr 7, 2013 2:55 AM

“The projected budget is $12.8 million, and proceeds will be donated to USA Football and Gridiron Greats.”

    Good luck with that.

  34. fearthehoody says: Apr 7, 2013 3:04 AM

Must be time of Unitas life when he was going through an awkward and boring phase

  35. trevor123698 says: Apr 7, 2013 3:06 AM

For the sake of that movie he had better not have a significant role in any way whatsoever

  36. ericfast13 says: Apr 7, 2013 3:17 AM

No wonder they need money to film it.. (pockets checkbook)

  37. floridaslonechargersfan says: Apr 7, 2013 3:23 AM

Is it because they both are kinda goofy looking?

  38. classyjacklambert says: Apr 7, 2013 3:23 AM

I didn’t know Unitas had a unibrow. Flaccos already got the lack of personality down at least.

  39. biglaj007 says: Apr 7, 2013 3:43 AM

Why so much hate for Flacco? I just don’t get it, the dude is a stud & a pure winner. Five years in the league & a trip to the playoffs every year, some of you wish your QBs could do the same, even if it take a check-down, bomb, or whatever you guys want to name his passes. The reality is he wins & the sooner you all accept this the better it will be for you haters cuz hating on him & writing hateful posts will only cause stress to your lives. He will continue to win & some of you wish you have half of his talents, you all take a chill pill & stop hating before you have a heart attack.

  40. randallflagg52 says: Apr 7, 2013 6:26 AM

Flacco is probably the most Unitas like player in the NFL today. He is a quiet type of leader, big armed, and just wins. Name one QB in the NFL today who is more like Unitas than Flacco and I’ll show you a blue dog.

  41. sickcuz says: Apr 7, 2013 6:32 AM

For the movie’s sake, hopefully Flacco won’t have to deliver any lines….Have you seen any of his commercials?

  42. hodag54501 says: Apr 7, 2013 7:15 AM

It’s a shame the younger folks never saw Unitas. Bart Starr won the titles. Unitas was the best.

  43. bigcitysteel says: Apr 7, 2013 7:47 AM

Flacco is not a real QB….he just plays one on tv

  44. grpatriot says: Apr 7, 2013 8:05 AM

Flaccostien! Doesn’t look like Johnny U! Coudn’t get Favre?

  45. gonavybeatarmy says: Apr 7, 2013 8:22 AM

    Jump Ball Johnny U?

  46. jlv3gem says: Apr 7, 2013 8:26 AM

There are a bunch of haters out there. Check down Joe and Jump Ball Joe? You must not have watched the 2012 playoffs people. It was 50 yard bomb after another

  47. jlv3gem says: Apr 7, 2013 8:27 AM

    Ravens back to the SB

  48. bigbensucks says: Apr 7, 2013 8:45 AM

The key phrase is “will play Unitas”, because he will never be as good as Unitas.

  49. bodhisattva says: Apr 7, 2013 8:51 AM

What nobody has seemingly noticed is Flacco’s 50’s-style NASA Buzzcut made him the natural choice for this role.

  50. sizroch says: Apr 7, 2013 9:00 AM

Glad to see it and glad Joe agreed to play the part.

I’m confident there would be an audience and if the investment terms are reasonable, I’m ready to sign up.

  51. packattack1967 says: Apr 7, 2013 9:05 AM

How about Barry Pepper? Looks a lot like him.

  52. spedman24 says: Apr 7, 2013 9:07 AM

Yeah, I’ll pay for their movie to be made & not see the profits…..while the 100 million dollar man drinks waters on set I paid for…

  53. 1uniquename says: Apr 7, 2013 9:43 AM

Ryan Tannehill should be playing Johnny U imo. I understand wanting to keep it in house but Tannehill moves, somewhat looks and even acts like Johnny U. I think if Flacco wasn’t available he would be the next logical choice, just not sure if he could act to save his life.

  54. drone501 says: Apr 7, 2013 9:45 AM

unitas was the greatest of many great qb’ s out of the pittsburgh area.

  55. therealsmiley says: Apr 7, 2013 10:02 AM

Now he’ll be an elite QB in the NFL. Hail!

  56. pinion8ted says: Apr 7, 2013 10:30 AM

The only place Joe Flacco could be mistaken for Johnny Unitas IS in the movies ……

    talk about artistic license!

  57. thingamajig says: Apr 7, 2013 10:45 AM

Joe, I’ve seen both of you play and you’re no Johhny Unitas.

  58. heyzeus143 says: Apr 7, 2013 11:01 AM

Let the Super Bowl hangover begin

  59. stoolerz says: Apr 7, 2013 12:11 PM

They need to make a movie about the colts moving to Indianapolis because of the lack of support from some of the biggest fare weather fans in the world.

  60. salventuri says: Apr 7, 2013 12:16 PM

I would have picked Sanchez for the role.

  61. jvn36 says: Apr 7, 2013 12:27 PM

Maybe if Ray Lewis was cast as Johnny U I’d watch, but I mean Flacco is just lame. Is anyone a die hard Flacco fan? Is that even possible?

  62. jacktheraven says: Apr 7, 2013 12:41 PM

Should be a good movie. Don’t get the hate here. Movie proceeds are going to good cause. Is it jealousy that fans want to insult the SB Champ & MVP?

  63. ahostiletakeover says: Apr 7, 2013 4:25 PM

From what I understand in what all I’ve read on the subject, Flacco will only be playing Johnny Unitas in “football” scenes, aka scene where you probably wouldn’t even know it was him if it hadn’t been publicized, chill out haters.

  64. getyourownname says: Apr 7, 2013 8:40 PM

When you think about it, it’s really appropriate.

Unitas was cut by the Steelers, who had no idea how good he was. U of Pittsburgh made Flacco play behind Tyler Palko who is now out of pro football, they had no idea how good Flacco was.

  65. shawshankreception says: Apr 7, 2013 10:37 PM

I’m ok with this selection, although Flacco had better start tweezing…

  66. mrjwright2001 says: Apr 9, 2013 7:14 PM

Another football flick? Don’t they know Rudy is the end-all-be-all of the gridiron? And Flacco can barely play himself, let alone Unitas. I see another award in Joe’s future…a Razzie.
