Flacco role reveals Unitas family rift

The news that Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco will play Johnny Unitas in an upcoming film has revealed an unfortunate rift within the family of the late Hall of Fame quarterback.

Joe Unitas (pictured), Johnny’s son by his second marriage, co-wrote the script for the movie and is delighted to have Flacco on board. But John Unitas Jr., Johnny’s son by his first marriage, ripped the choice of Flacco in an interview with USA Today.

“They’re trying to do anything on the coattails of my father’s name,” John Jr. said. “It’s like prostituting yourself. My father would have nothing to do with it. It makes me angry, but there’s nothing I can do about it until they slip up. If they start selling some things with Johnny Unitas on it, then I have legal recourse.”

John Jr. also called his half-brother “a turd” and called Flacco a “goofball.” That’s probably not the kind of publicity Flacco was hoping for when he agreed to play the part of one of the greatest players in NFL history.

  1. John later apologized for his choice of words. What he meant to say was that Joe Unitas was a goofball, and Flacco was a turd. “So many goddamn Joeys around you think you were in the Australian outback”, he offered by way of explanation.

  2. That’s fine if Johnny U’s relatives think he wouldn’t have supported this movie. But do you really need to throw Baltimore’s quarterback under the bus? Johnny U lived in Baltimore until he died and he was always a big supporter of the Ravens organization. He had disowned the Indianapolis Professional Football Team. So, really, did they have to trash Flacco? Seems unnecessary and petty.

  3. Last time a football player starred in a movie it was Brian Bosworth.

I doubt if the results here will be any better. When will people learn that professional athletes are not actors?

  4. I graduated from high school with John Jr. and he was a class act back then. I think that this is an unfortunate rift within the extended Unitas family, and has nothing to do with Joe Flacco.

  5. Wes Craven will be lucky to go 6-10 this year? huh?

As for the RAVENS we’re already 4-0 in calendar year 2013: in playoff games.

  6. Don’t know about who is a turd and who is a goofball….but Flacco as Johnny U?

Even if it’s just throwing the ball in takes, he’s too tall, holds the ball differently and his footwork doesn’t come close to Unitas.

Very poor choice…didn’t know that Flacco could act either.

  7. Let me guess, John Jr. is a knuckle head who at this point in his life would be completely irrelevant if not for the fame of his father.

Oh, and he’s accusing others of riding his father’s coat tails. Like he has a leg to stand on with that charge. And when he draws direct comparisons to prostituting oneself, I’m going out on a limb and saying he is probably making that comparison based on real life experience. No doubt he knows where the economy sized jars of KY Jelly are at in his local Walgreens.

  8. Hey Johnny Jr., angry much? Seriously, he sounds very bitter and it’s very unfortunate that this is airing publicly. I get calling your brother a name because you’re mad (still not right to do it publicly) but why is Flacco being bashed simply because he has agreed to play a part in the movie? This guy sounds like he needs to grow up and keep family rifts within the confines of the family…not for public consumption.

  9. I don’t know if Flacco’s involvement has done anything to “reveal” the rift. These two factions of the Unitas family have been suing the face off one another for literally the last 10 years.

  10. It’s one thing if you’ve got issues with your brother, it’s a wholly other ballgame when you drag someone innocent like Flacco into your mudslinging.

Flacco knows nothing about, nor should you bash him for innocently stepping on the turd that is your family disfunction.

Absolutely classless behavior by all the Unitases. A shame on their fathers good name.

  11. No class. John Jr. would be better served to offer no comment and work to preserve his dad’s legacy by offering forth dignified words and actions if it really is about preserving his father’s legacy.

  12. Do the Unitas’s realize how petty and transparent this whole thing is? Didn’t they learn from Ted William’s family feud over his body. Question : does Joe want to honor or profit and is Jr. worried about dad’s legacy or that he’s gonna lose money?

  13. Kinda of over board comments by the first son… let the guy make the movie about father. Did not even know who these guys are before this article!

Kinda shows the character of the man John Jr. is by the nasty and classless comments he made. He must be an entitled human being that still wants to live off the fact the he is the son of Unitas, controlling everything.

  14. What … what? Why?

If they were going to make a movie about my legendary father, I’d want a real actor to play the part. It’s a lot easier to cut in actual football clips when needed than it is to make a football player look like an actor if he doesn’t have any acting chops. Of course, some athletes are good actors, but few of them debuted by having to carry a picture. Sounds like this is going to be something made in a parking lot–and I don’t blame the elder Unitas for being upset about that.

  15. LOL! Classic stuff there. Flacco probably wants to grab a Tom Cruise sized contract…

Was he wrong about Flacco being a goofball…? Probably not, he’s the highest paid top-15 qb in the league.

  16. Apparently I’m one of 3 people that think taking a shot at Flacco here is a bad move. All he did was sign on to play a legendary QB and he gets called names. That’s absurd and you people condoning that should be ashamed. What ever happened to common decency?

  17. Either Jr. is a total jerk, or he’s an alright guy who made a bad choice on what to say publicly.

Either way, taking a shot at Flacco is clearly not the right thing to do.

  18. this family obviously didnt stress education during the upbringing of these backward hill people

  19. You could not have a more perfect candidate than Joe Flacco. Look at the postseason numbers this past year. Unitas did not even accomplish those feats. On top of that, he looks like Unitas and plays like him too. Man is a winner. The rest of you who fail to recognize that are simply hating. Its ok not to be a fan of someone, but when you have no facts to back up why he is so “average” or “overrated” you just sound silly – and dont even bring up a fantasy QB as a reason – he’s on a run-first team and I encourage you to show me another team that has a running back as dynamic as Ray Rice but still throws for over 5,000 yards…..im waiting

  20. What’s next with Flacco – Dancing With the Stars?

He’s now surpassed BB as the afcn’s biggest diva.

  21. Regardless, I don’t think a typical Hollywood movie would do Unitas justice.

Growing up without a father shoving coal and dog earring a Red Grange book from the library in an age when baseball ruled, to playing a game a U of L against UT where they had to cut his uniform off from being so exhausted, to playing on fields of gravel and broken glass for $6 a game, nothing Hollywood can do in 2 hours could come close to showing the passion and commitment Unitas had for the game of football.

Every moment of his life on the field was remarkable until the last series of downs he played at Baltimore. None were better than him before and none will ever carry a candle to him afterwards. There was and only will be one Unitas.

  22. Wouldn’t a movie be considered something you’re going to “sell”? Sounds to me, like this guy is mad he isn’t getting any royalties from his smarter half-brother..
