Jerry Jones: Don’t call our 2008 first-round picks busts

Dallas Cowboys v Cincinnati Bengals Getty Images

The Cowboys had two first-round picks in the 2008 NFL draft. Neither of them is on the team anymore.

One of them, cornerback Mike Jenkins, just signed with the Raiders. The other one, running back Felix Jones, is currently a free agent without a contract. But the man who decided to draft those two players, Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones says it would be incorrect to call them busts.

“We got starting time out of both of them,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “That’s not enough, but those guys aren’t NFL busts. We were proud to have [Felix Jones] with that No. 1 pick, and as late as last year I was proud to have that No. 1 in Jenkins. But it is five years down the road now.”

Jenkins was a starter for three seasons in Dallas, and Felix Jones has had his moments, and so maybe “busts” is too strong a word for them.

On the other hand, the Cowboys had to spend a lot last offseason to sign Brandon Carr and draft Morris Claiborne, and they wouldn’t have had to make those moves if Jenkins had become the No. 1 cornerback they wanted him to be. And plenty of people thought Jerry Jones became overly enamored with Felix Jones because of their Arkansas connection, and the decision to draft Felix Jones looks especially bad in hindsight because of the other running backs who were chosen in that draft after him, including Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Ray Rice and Jamaal Charles.

So if Jenkins and Jones weren’t busts, they weren’t particularly good picks, either. If they were, Jerry Jones wouldn’t let them get away.

That whole team is a bust. At least the Jets made back to back appearances in the conference championship game a few years back, Dallas however has nothing to show but Tony Romo blooper reels at the ends of back to back to back mediocre seasons.

Sorry to contradict you Jerry, but they were busts….

  11. thestrategyexpert says: Apr 9, 2013 1:03 PM

Jerry made horrible picks that underproduced relative to what those picks were worth. That’s a bust, the only question is to what degree of a bust they were. I don’t know how he can have so much pride in having players that in totality were not enough to win with. He chose the players and he made poor choices each and every year and continues to do so. His warped perspective of the value of players is not going to help this team achieve anything special. He’s totally lost now.

  12. seaeagle707 says: Apr 9, 2013 1:03 PM

For Pete’s sake Jerry, you’re a genius at making money. Isn’t that enough? I’ve always wondered why you haven’t become the HC of the Pokes, since you do everything else. But if you can’t see the negatives your team has accrued since Jimmy left town, then I think I see your problem, “Myopia With Blue Stars In Your Eyes”.

  20. dirtybird28 says: Apr 9, 2013 1:12 PM

I dunno if I’d call Jenkins a bust. After his shoulder injury is when he missed most of his time and didn’t quite look right. He was definitely serviceable, though.

Felix… come on. He looked great early, then became the butt of every Cowboys Jones’ joke that didn’t have “Jerry” in it. I do blame the coaching and leadership as much as some of these players, too.

  21. thejrod2006 says: Apr 9, 2013 1:13 PM

With the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys Select. . .Mark Cuban, owner, Dallas Mavericks.

  30. jimmypx says: Apr 9, 2013 1:21 PM

I really think that the NFL should be allowed to FORCE teams to either fire the existent GM or make the owner get a competent GM for the good of the league.

Just look at the damage Al Davis did in Oakland and Jerry is doing in Dallas. Look at how long GM Millen stayed in Detroit and the damage that he did to that team.

Jerry you are now the WORST GM in the NFL and if 5 years after the draft your 1st round pick isn’t at least a starter then they are a BUST !!!

  31. seabreezes51 says: Apr 9, 2013 1:21 PM

Considering that Jerry and his team completely guessed and whiffed on how high an NFL punt went into the air even though they of anyone in the universe would have access to hard scientific factual data on the subject when they were hanging the billion dollar jumbo-tron, I’m not sure why anyone would be surprised that they draft poorly.

  40. chawk12thman says: Apr 9, 2013 1:27 PM

Jerry is indicated that 5 years down the road is why they are no longer playing at the no 1 rating……In fact, it is at the 5 year period that you start to get the actual determination about the quality of the draft picks by any team. Two years ago when discussed he would have said it was too early to tell. Now it is too late. When does he ever think the decision can be made on bust or not?

  41. blueballz77 says: Apr 9, 2013 1:28 PM

Jerry your right they are not busts Don’t change a thing you are the best Gm in history people are just jealous. We are blessed to have you don’t change your approach. -Giants fan- p.s. I’m sure redskins and eagles fans feel the same way. we love you

  42. ramofsteel says: Apr 9, 2013 1:28 PM

The one thing I remember about Jenkins is that Sunday night game vs. the Packers couple years ago where he gave up and didn’t even attempt tackling the WR who went on to score (the Pack won of course). Also, wasn’t Felix Jones’ speed the biggest asset? And he got bigger…but not the good kind.

    So yeah…busts.

  52. jeremycrowhurst says: Apr 9, 2013 1:56 PM

If you apply the standard of “looks especially bad in hindsight because of the other [players] who were chosen in that draft after him”, then virtually every player chosen in the first round of every draft is “especially bad”. There are perennial Pro Bowlers, and many a future Hall of Famer, taken in rounds two and later every year.

  53. pdidit09 says: Apr 9, 2013 1:58 PM

The entire sports industry and fans across the nation likes to humor themselves about the most storied franchise in the world. Jerry Jones is the main reason the Fox deal ever came about. 60. fwippel says: Apr 9, 2013 2:20 PM

Sorry Jerry, but if your first round picks from six drafts ago are not entrenched quality starters on your team, or unless they have been traded for players who are quality starters on your team, those picks qualify as “busts”.

It happens to every team, and it’s not all that unusual. Scott Pioli was considered a genius in New England because of his work; he went to Kansas City and flopped so poorly he now works for NFL Network.

Bobby Beathard helped build the Washington Redskins into three time Super Bowl Champions. He also was responsible for drafting Ryan Leaf in San Diego.

It’s the nature and reality of the business.

  61. flannlv says: Apr 9, 2013 2:22 PM

If your GM wouldn’t be hired by any other team in the league you don’t have a GM

  62. watchdawg1103 says: Apr 9, 2013 2:24 PM

It’s things like this when your owner is in denial that adds to why people hate Dallas. Jerry, get over yourself…they sucked. I hated the Jones draft then and in hindsight we could have had a stud running back. I like Murray but he’s too fragile. Jenkins had potential and I will give it to him he had heart always playing hurt.

  63. duffsbeer says: Apr 9, 2013 2:30 PM

I fully agree that those two aren’t busts. They were poor draft picks but lets actually save the term bust for the really subpar choices some GMs have made, Ryan Leaf, Lawrence Phillips,Charlie Rogers, Blair Thomas, Akili Smith, etc.

Lets also look at the term “steal of the draft” Drafting someone in 5th round that was slated to go in 4th round isn’t a fantastic steal. Getting a starter in the third round is a good draft pick.
Getting a star player in the 5th round or later (Brady, Terrell Davis, Bo Jackson, Shannon Sharpe)

Hold on there. I will agree that most of those picks sucked. Newman was a solid starter in the NFL and actually had one of his best years last year. I’ll give you that the rest were bad picks, but c’mon man, how can you throw Stephen McGee into the mix as if he were a first round pick. How many 4th round selections are “alarming”?

  72. jerryjonesmustdie83 says: Apr 9, 2013 2:58 PM

Jerruh and the NFL draft have been a thorn in the side of collective fans since jimmy left. Remember in the late nineties when he was only drafting back ups cause we had the triplets? Didn’t work out when they slowly started leaving. The ENTIRE 2009 class is gone or out of football and it won’t be long before we’re looking at the same situation cowboys fans faced in the early 2000’s- stuck in salary cap hell trying to win with CFL type players-once parcells draft guys are gone too!
On a side note, it amazes me how jets fans can make fun of the cowboys for having jones and romo when they’ve got their own circus with Rex “Footmaster” Ryan and Mark “buttfumble” Sanchez.

  73. chargerdillon says: Apr 9, 2013 2:59 PM

As much crap as people want to give Jerry Jones, the bottom line is, he’s one of the few owners that truly cares about a winning product and making his brand and big and as good as he can.

Do you think Jerry would’ve ever fired a coach who took his team to a 14-2 record? Because my stupid Charger owner would.

At least for all of Jerry’s faults, he owns every mistake he makes for this team, and right now you can call him a jackwagon for bad picks, but the same goes for picks like Demarcus Ware, that’s one HoF’er he drafted there.

Jackson was the Number one running back and if we would have taken him this would not even be a topic to discuss….. so Ya there were a lot of bad drafts. and yes I will be a cowboys fan for life and we will win a super bowl when Jerry passes away. Because the dude will never fire him self!

  77. whatjusthapped says: Apr 9, 2013 3:17 PM

Its not like I am going on a limb when I say the Cowboys will never sniff another Superbowl as long as Jerry insists on playing GM.

It requires too many moving parts and a solid personnel department backed up by knowledgeable GM is formula. Jerry will always get in the way and 2008 is the rule rather than an exception.

  85. bigbenh8tr says: Apr 9, 2013 4:03 PM

Any real Cowboys fan can see the difference between Jerry Jones 5 years ago and Jerry Jones today. Yes, he is still stubborn and doesn’t want to admit past mistakes, but even though he can’t shut up in front of a microphone, he is at least allowing others to help him make the decisions it seems…That won’t be enough to help this team reach the superbowl, but I hate to see a team get criticized so widely from front office to the players, when they have been in the playoffs or on the verge for the better part of the last 8 years (besides 2 seasons).

The criticism is fair and comes with the territory but with a above average o-line and above average secondary, I believe they would have made it to at least 2 NFC championship games, even with Romo. They simply have the talent and coaching has hurt, injuries, and weak spots at certain positions.

Keep it coming, I will be laughing in December when we win the division……since we were soooooo awful at 8-8. Tools.

  86. EJ says: Apr 9, 2013 4:05 PM

Jones should fire himself as GM and get a new face in there. Example: Morris Claiborne was supposed to be one of the surest players in last years draft, but right now he’s not looking so good. That doesn’t bode well for Jones, who gave up a bunch to make the move. Just give in Jerry, you don’t have what it takes to play GM.

  87. SparkyGump says: Apr 9, 2013 4:05 PM

Jerry Jones is the new Al Davis but with more money. The only thing that’s going to get this delusional, old fool’s attention is empty seats and falling revenues. “Ok first off….I remember that 04 Draft when Steven Jackson Fell in our laps and all Jerry Did was trade the pick and pass on him to pick up in the second round”Julious Jones”. Jackson was the Number one running back and if we would have taken him this would not even be a topic to discuss…..”

News flash: Bill Parcells was the one who wasn’t interested in Steven Jackson, and he convinced Jones to trade down and get a guy he liked at RB and stockpile for the future.

Parcells then convinced Jones to take Marcus Spears (who Parcells actually wanted to draft at the spot Jones overrode him on and took DeMarcus Ware instead) with the 1st round pick Dallas got when they traded down the previous year instead of taking Jackson.

Someone in an earlier comment also criticized Jones for taking Bobby Carpenter…that was a 100% Bill Parcells choice.

It doesn’t matter what the reality is…Jones will take the heat every time (hence proving Dez Bryant’s words to be true). He’s far from brilliant, but he’s perfectly serviceable. If you call Jones “the worst GM in football”, you have a steep hill to climb to prove that, given that Dallas has been competitive for years now since getting rid of Parcells and having Jones run the show. I can think of quite a few teams and their GMs who are clearly worse than Dallas and Jones. Prove me wrong.

(now if you want to make fun of how he speaks to the media or his appearance, go ahead, he deserves that criticism)

Because the dude will never fire him self!

Um that was all bill parcells doing….and you call yourself a cowboys fan? Lol

There are many people who compare Jones and Al Davis at the end of his run…boy oh boy, there may not be a dumber comparison than that.

Davis at times vanished from the public, ran through coaches like crazy, and showed an ill-advised obsession with speed, size, and other pure measurables in the draft, leading to many high pick busts.

Jones has kept up steady public appearances, has shown a lot of loyalty to his coaching (something that usually pays off in the NFL), and has a fairly solid recent draft record.

Most importantly…look at how the teams did during the periods people like to compare!

Raiders, from 2003 to 2010 (after which Davis passed away): 37-91, .289, pretty deserving of all the criticism

Cowboys, from 2007 (post Parcells era) to today: 55-41, .573, quantitatively better than over half the NFL

Wow, if .573 is so bad in the eyes of many, they must have REALLY high expectations for Jones…or maybe they’re trolls who are too stupid to realize that the Cowboys are a perfectly solid franchise with a perfectly solid (but, sure, imperfect) GM.

With all the snarky comments – I had to add my own.
Jerry is actually right, in a way – there will be no busts in Canton. Of his 2008 first round picks.

Keep up the good work Jerry.

Wow imagine if we would have drafted CJ, Forte, Rice, or Charles! I definitely think the Arkansas connection blurred his vision passing on those guys…SMH!

I do not call ANY of the cowboy picks abust. But I do call their GM, Jerry Jones a bust. he should be fired

Jerry, your first rounders were busts.
