Raiders sign Usama Young

Usama Young AP

The Raiders continue to collect bargain-priced defensive talent, and it helps if you have a connection.

Today’s acquisition, as announced by the team, was veteran safety Usama Young.

Young spent the last two years with the Browns, but was with the Saints (and secondary coach Dennis Allen, now the Raiders head coach) prior to that.

He joins former Saints teammate Tracy Porter there, along with a lot of new parts as they try to rebuild on the cheap.

Raiders fans need to stop yawning at reggie’s moves.

He has added nice pieces at low cost that all will be playing hard for that jackpot cap room okaland will have next year after AL’s dead money players clear.

70 mill in cap next year, guys on 1-yr deals will be playing hard.

The defense is already better than last yr without a draft, undrafted FA, and camp adds and all.

    go raiders.

808 is right…..now just need the draft picks.

    COMMITTMENT TO EXCELLENCE!!!!

  5. r8rsfan says: Apr 9, 2013 4:26 PM

This team will not lose due to lack of effort. Seems there is a concerted effort by the organization to create motivation whether it be to cut vets on scholarship, sign young guys to 1 year deals, etc.

  6. raiderlyfe510 says: Apr 9, 2013 4:28 PM

I like the personnel moves Reggie makes…just not the coaching hires.
    This is another food signing.

  7. bornking24 says: Apr 9, 2013 4:29 PM

They may as well just release the whole 2012-2013 defense…

  8. kylexitron says: Apr 9, 2013 4:31 PM

Raiders will be pretty good in 2-3 years once they rebuild this thing the right way.

Which will be just in time for Peyton Manning to retire and put the division up for grabs once again.

    The OAK staff realizes this.

They picked up Flynn who may just be medicre, but he won’t suck, and on the up side if he plays well then he will have a few good years left in him by the time the team gets there. If he’s just average forever then they can pick someone up once the rest of the team is sound.

Watch the Browns vs Texans highlights from 2011. I have never seen an NFL player be so afraid to hit.

  10. raider23mike says: Apr 9, 2013 4:34 PM

Now with the addition of DT – Louitiou – the Defense will be set, just in time for Elite Peyton to retire after 2014. We will be set by then

Reggie seems to be doing his homework on players that are being overlooked or written off. There is some Al in Reg. While all the networks talk about all the big signs and same teams, the Raiders fly under the radar with some pretty solid signs. After the draft, FA, and waivers are all said and done, they may just take everyone by storm!

  12. calibear831 says: Apr 9, 2013 4:38 PM

I was hoping charles Woodson would come back to Oakland and play safety. . .but im sure he wants way too much money than what he’s worth

  13. pettytom says: Apr 9, 2013 4:51 PM

  14. corporate1raider says: Apr 9, 2013 4:53 PM

I find what Reggie has been doing very interesting. I’m not a fantasy football type, I don’t watch college football, and I’m not a draft day or waiver wire maven so all these signings, in regard to personnel, are a bit of a mystery to me.

What I do see is a front office trying to maximize what it has available to it. It’s kind of like “Billy Ball” where Reggie is looking for intangibles and abilities in players on the lesser rungs of the league. Remember Miami’s “No-name” defense of the ’70s? I think what is happening in Oakland, potentially, is a team of good players who will work well as a team, swarm to the ball, and play hard on every down because they will have to get by on grit and determination as opposed to raw talent.

A team of “B” level players working in unison can achieve much if given the chance.

I’m hoping Reggie’s strategy pays off. We’ll just have to wait and see how the season shakes out in regard to overall ability and injuries for the Raiders and the rest of the division.

I do like what I see. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Reggie is building the team from the bottom up. He is not going for the 1st rounders and then trying to fill in the backups and depth. He is building the depth of the team first (and hopefully within that depth some starters will emerge) and then will add the top-tier players.

I think it’s a good strategy if this is indeed what he is doing.

    Smart guy that Reg.

  15. radrntn says: Apr 9, 2013 4:54 PM

all good….once again nothing sexy or flashy just another guy who going to bust his tail to earn a starting spot.

if true curious to see how much Felix Jones is willing to play for, in order to play with DMC again.

  16. borisbulldog says: Apr 9, 2013 4:59 PM

It’ll be real easy to locate Usama on Sundays- he’ll be the one running just behind the WR into the endzone!

  18. tdubdizzle says: Apr 9, 2013 5:01 PM

Slowly but surely The Raiders are building a dynasty! Young, Branch, Porter and Jenkins in the secondary is already a major upgrade! Just wait till we get some draft picks and a couple more cheap free agents. The Raiders are going to compete next year, Dennis Allen is about to make a lot of people eat their tongues.

  19. nineroutsider says: Apr 9, 2013 5:03 PM

Some of you are going too far, but I would like to formally recant my previous statements about the Raiders being on the clock already for 2014. They will compete next year; Reggie has cut the fat and made the roster better. If they can take their cap medicine while competing than Reggie has done a good job.

I don’t like Allen though. However, they weren’t going to get many takers for that job. Things will be different when they have young talent and cap space in 2014. This should be Allen’s last year if he coaches like last year…

  20. nolahxc says: Apr 9, 2013 5:07 PM

He’s not much of a cover guy, but he’s a good role player that is very familiar with Dennis Allen. He’ll be a great special teams contributor.

Raiders fans are the most optimistic bunch around. Every year we hear how they are building a dynasty. Not just a decent, competitive team…a DYNASTY. I’m not convinced these cheap signings are the building blocks for a DYNASTY. They seem more like stop-gap solutions in order for Oakland to not be a complete embarrassment on the field in 2013. They will really start to get better when their cap issues are cleared up. I look forward to at least one more year of the Raiders dwelling in the AFC West cellar. Oh yeah, I know, THREE RINGS. So you were 2 or 3 when the Chargers went to the Super Bowl? You were 6 or 7 when the Raiders did.. But all of those years winning a crap division then getting their butts handed to them in the playoffs for the Dolts makes Raider fans delusional? Of course, the Charger fan go to has always been to make fun of the one decade of poor Raider football and not look back at the half century of poor Charger football… No other organization has gone 14-2, then immediately fired the coach that turned the team around and hire a 2 time loser to drag their team back to the basement where it is so comfortable.

Tsk tsk, you youngin’s are funny. 3 rings yes, but the Raiders are still the most recent team of the AFCW to get to the superbowl even though we got dismantled. You probably became a charger fan bandwagon because they were so good when you got into football. Marty is gone, Norv is gone, it’s back to the cellar with the bolts. You were 3 years old, but the closest thing Chargers have to glory is Stan Humphries, wikipedia him to see how he did in the superbowl against the 49ers. Go back to enjoying your flat land, and humid weather.

Is this the 3rd or 4th Brown they have added this off season? How’s that working for you raider fans?

  30. tangysizzl says: Apr 9, 2013 6:04 PM

Matt Flynn is gonna end up being the best move Reggie has made down there to date. I know hes only started 2 games but he was damn impressive in both starts. He came up a little short in a 4 qtr battle with Tom Brady and co and then he set Packers passing records of 480 yrds 6 TDs against Detroit in a 4 qtr shootout.

I know that people want to call him Kolb 2.0 and Matt Cassell 2.0 but im telling you hes different than them. Hes efficient, makes good decisions and hes got a quick release. He also gets rid of the ball on time for the most part, so he won’t take a lot of sacks by holding the ball too long.

Give him some time to learn the system and im betting he will be a top 15 QB with 6-8 wins in his first season as the Raider’s starter. 2 game margin is for the team around him. Give him some weapons and some stability in the offensive system and you will have yourself a quality starting QB for the forseeable future for a couple of measly late round draft picks.

Only Raider Fans would stick up for Reggie. He takes a job and brings in Coaches they hand pick, dump one of the best OL Coaches out there, change schemes to schemes that did not fit the players.

Take a top 2 or 3 running game and drop it to last in the NFL, take a top 10 passing game and destroy it and take a team that swept its division 2 or 3 years straight scoring close to 30 points per game to a 4-12 team that was lucky to score 10 points a game.

He than goes out and fires the coaches he just bring in, hire new ones for players he has but gets rid of Palmer, makes the mistakes of not knowing what he is doing by losing a great young Line backer and a young TE by not having the brains to sign them up on the cheap early.

As for Al’s players?, funny how the NFL are snatching them up as fast as they are being released. Reggie has turned the Raiders back into a laughing stock bottom feeder, the ones that love it are the Media type Raider Haters that love it Reggie has the Raiders falling in line with all the other Cookie Cutter teams, Reggie is God to these people. Al Davis is rolling over in his Grave.

    WOW!!! Raider Nation!

Just think next year, we will have around $69 to
$75 mil of cap space next year! And the most this year were a few teams @ $25Mil!

What are these haters gonna say about us next year? That we were dumb and Ignorant?

Keep it up Raider nation we have the best blog of any football team in the nation –

haters dont have anything good to talk about their own team blog sites –

Now a solid draft and we have a nice mix of vets and rooks – we’ll compete ..

    I am all in!!

  35. murfdeezy says: Apr 9, 2013 7:16 PM

Look, I think people are being unrealistic on both sides of the argument here. Some of my fellow Raider fans are clearly losing their mind if they think this roster constitutes the makings of a DYNASTY. Seriously…I’ll be happy if we just get the NASTY part right….and I think Reg is doing a good job of making that a priority. He has made it a point to bring in the best available talent that he can afford at all positions of need. I don’t think he will hit a home run on all of them, but I do expect him to hit a few (my guess is Roach and Porter earn a permanent home on the roster if they can stay healthy).

Big Reg laid all the proper groundwork. He brought in talented guys that were in less than ideal situations and gave them a one year deal after he cleared up enough salary cap space to start his own expansion team next year. Seriously, the Raider Nation can be a bit abrasive and delusional…but we are also passionate and loyal. Sooooo…love us or hate us, but you have to admit…whether you call it dumpster diving or not…it’s better than last years dumpster. Besides, they say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure right. The Patriots are always scarfing up Raider garbage…and according to all the haters…that’s the garbage of garbage right? After all…we are the garbage of the league and we don’t even want them right…but somehow they keep landing on some other team’s roster. That’s because the truth is that our teams were not without talent…they were just grossly overpaid. When guys are overpaid for underachieving and signed to long term contracts….SURPRISE…they get comfortable and stop playing hard….especially when they know they are gonna see a new coach every year.

This year Reggie is laying the foundation…which is structure, system, discipline, and work ethic. This season will be a tryout for most of the roster on both sides of the ball…and next year the transformation will begin and construction of the new Raiders will be well underway by March and April of 2014. I like what I see, and I think he is moving in the right direction. I do believe we may surprise some people this season. We aren’t taking the division or anything….but I don’t think we well be in the cellar either. Guess we will have to wait and see. Go Raiders. Peace out.

Reggie is signing players to be competitive now, not in a few years. To the guy that says this guy is afraid to hit? This guy was ranked #3 in the league for tackles and #11 in coverage at safety.

I like our starting backfield with Porter, Jenkins, Adams/Hanson in the slot Branch and Young at Safety.

hey chargers fan how many super bowls have you guys won again. Last time i checked you guys have given more of the best talent that is in the league to other teams than anybody, even Al Davis in his later years did’nt make as many personel mistakes and choose the wrong players to give up on as the chargers did namely Drew Brees,Darren Sproles,
and countless others that in many playoff games would have made the difference between forgettable losses in the playoffs, and at least super bowl appearances. and by the way we have 3 super bowls to your 0 so suck it raider nation out

When you do that you run the risk of being a humb0lt with his lame “Super Bowl Express” comments, or a Chiefs fan that runs his mouth all off-season about how good his favorite team is going to be, only to see them get swept by the Raiders and finish dead last in the league. That would be embarrassing.
