Team needs: Philadelphia Eagles

New York Giants v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

The Eagles’ steep fall in 2012 cost Andy Reid his job and left Philadelphia picking higher (No. 4 overall) than any other NFC team in April’s draft. New head coach Chip Kelly inherits a solid core of talent, but there are still some needs to address:

Offensive tackle: The Eagles could stand pat at this position and might fare well enough in 2013, given the quality of starters Jason Peters and Todd Herremans. Nevertheless, adding a young tackle would give the Eagles some offensive line flexibility this season and beyond. Peters, the left tackle, has Pro Bowl talent, but he’s coming off an Achilles injury, and he’s slated to make close to $10 million in 2014, per Rotoworld. What’s more, he’s 31 years old. Herremans, who’s roughly nine months younger than Peters, has the ability to slide back to guard from right tackle if a promising tackle enters the fold.

Quarterback: Michael Vick enters the final year of his contract, and he will be 33 in June. Nick Foles, the top backup, was drafted for Reid’s scheme, not Kelly’s. While ex-Oregon standout Dennis Dixon is no stranger to Kelly and his offense, he hasn’t been much of a factor on the NFL level. In short, it would make sense for the Eagles to add at this position.

Outside linebacker: The Eagles have some intriguing options at this position, with Connor Barwin, Trent Cole and Brandon Graham the top three. That said, the 30-year-old Cole has never played outside linebacker at this level, and his annual compensation is set to soar in 2015, according to Rotoworld figures. Graham is switching positions, too. Barwin notched 11.5 sacks two seasons ago but just three in 2012. Like offensive tackle, the Eagles could logically play their existing hand at this position, but they could also be tempted to add a prospect to the mix.

Cornerback: The Eagles will have two new starters at this position with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie signing with Denver and Nnamdi Asomugha landing with San Francisco after his release. While Philadelphia signed Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher early in free agency to restock the ranks, adding another corner via the draft would not be unwise. If a team’s best-laid plans at this position don’t work out, the results can be tough to watch. The Eagles know this well.

Wide receiver: Yes, Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson are an above-average wide receiver tandem. However, Maclin is in the last year of his contract, and he will be only 26 at the start of  the 2014 campaign. Considering his playmaking ability, production and relatively young age, Maclin could do very, very well for himself next offseason. Jackson, meanwhile, is slated to make close to $10 million in salary in 2014. There is no doubting his ability, but his consistency has sometimes left something to be desired.

How the Eagles approach this draft will be very interesting to watch. The Eagles have undergone some serious organizational change, with Kelly replacing a successful head coach who had a heavy hand in the making of this roster. How will Kelly mesh some obviously skilled veterans with his first group of rookies?

What the Eagles need is a foundationally accurate media liaison, not the lackey they have in Spadaro, (On The Inside). If he is threatened by your impudence, you find yourself banned from their site. “This is from the determination, of an authorized team representative, that would go to an away game and spit on the oppositions logo!” If he speaks for the team, “It is time for him to go.” I am a 50 plus year fan and a disabled, War Veteran,, not a “Madden,” Game Playing, officianato… What happened to the basics?

  12. thekingcray says: Apr 9, 2013 3:28 PM

This left out the Eagles’ actual gaping hole which is at 3-4 Defensive End. Sure there is Fletcher Cox on one end but you need two. I suggest us drafting Star Lotulelei with the 4th pick or trade down to 8-12 range and then draft him.

I’m just not crazy about this year’s QB class. I think we should wait til next year, and see what we can get out of Vick or Foles for now. With QB out of the equation our team needs in order go OT, 3-4 DE, DB (safety or corner), OLB, WR.

  31. myeaglescantwin says: Apr 9, 2013 4:04 PM

Eagles true needs are on the DL.

they only have 4 (3-4) DL. They need to draft the starting DE in Louteleli. Then come back at it with a back up NT, perhaps Jenkins from Georgia.
After that, they still need to address the other MLB in that scheme. as of now, they only have 3 starting calliber LB’s in kendricks, Ryans and Barwin..

in all honesty, no position is stacked enought for them to pass on anyone.
Now we should truly shoot for the best player available in this draft.

I wouldnt even mind them trading out of the top 10 this year if we can score an additional #1 for 2014..

  32. justintuckrule says: Apr 9, 2013 4:05 PM

    #2 through the rest
Grab one of the great OL with the #4 pick
    CB
    S
MLB (cause who else is gonna be there except D. Ryans?)
Long term NT (b/c Soap will be there, tops 2-3 years)
QB (only as a project if they see him finally building up to Chip’s system and no earlier then the 3rd round, otherwise suck it up and wait till next year)

  34. pewitttyler says: Apr 9, 2013 4:14 PM

So the only real reason you gave for why the Eagles need a wide receiver is that Jackson has consistency issues. He never dropped a pass last year and was on a career high for both yards and catches. Do your homework champ

No they aren’t the Ravens are the new Dream Team didn’t you hear? Oh and 2011 called it wants its joke back.

The Eagles need a whole lot especially on defense their offense is actually pretty good except for the most important position. I’d rather see Dixon, Foles, a draft pick literally anybody else besides Vick get the start at the beginning of the season.

The Eagles have tons of options. Dion Jordan, Star Lotulelei, Eric Fisher, Millner, Floyd etc. I hope they take Jordan a bad secondary will look fantastic if the front seven is applying consistent pressure. Jordan can be the impact pass rusher the Eagles need for their new 3-4 defense.

  43. EJ says: Apr 9, 2013 4:37 PM

The Eagles will take Dee Milliner with their first round pick and EJ Manuel with the second.

Milliner is a day 1 starter with a huge upside. He is quick, very smart and is an instant upgrade. His only knock is his hands, which is something he can make better with a bunch of practice.

Manuel is not a day 1 starter, but with some time under Vick and a lot of studying, he could be their next Franchise QB.

Apparently your ability to use Google rises to the same level as your ability to spell. Jason Peters has been to 5 Pro Bowls. He did not necessarily deserve each of those, the O-line spots are often awarded on reputation, but clearly he is a Pro Bowl talent. I doubt you could find any NFL talent evaluators who would rather have Jake Long.

Wr is first and foremost. Maclin and Jackson aren’t cutting it. Both would be above average 2s or slot guys, but neither is a true number 1.

The tackle situation isn’t as bad as everyone thinks. Petters is excellent when healthy, and Herman’s is average on his worst days.

Secondary is trouble, obviously, but their d isn’t going to be good anyway. May as well try to win in some shoot outs….

Any Corner at the 4th pick is a wasted pick. They just signed two free agents. Before this Heart stuff with Star L, he was considered the top pick in the draft

This team still has the same old offensive line that broke down last year. They are beginning to wear out.If you have an old ,worn out car you go buy a new one.So hopefully they’ll pick one of the best left tackles with the 1st pick.

I guess Miami has been an elite team since Marino retired. shut your mouth and win more than 8 games a year.

The eagles seem like they really wanna have a explosive offense so a guy like Lane Johnson would be good for them, his athletic ability would really help their screen game.

What they need are father’s day cards in bulk.

Because the NY Giants are their daddy.

Ok, so when’s the parade. Oh wait..they don’t give out Lombardi Trophies for Miracle at the Meadowlands 1 or 2, or even 3 and 4. It only counts if you win it all! Add SuperBowl Win to the the list of team needs above since the Trophy case is empty.

    I’ll add my two cents…
WR is a need for the Eagles, because the ones that they have can’t block for the running game — in Chip Kelly’s own words, that’s an important component to judging a WR. I don’t think straight-line speed is as important to him, given the up-tempo offense he wants to run. The ability to block and to catch balls in traffic are more important, and while Maclin has the edge over Jackson in those areas, he’s average at best. I would NOT be surprised to see one of them TRADED on draft day.

I think DE in a 3-4 scheme is not quite as high on the list of team needs. The 3-4 DEs are space-eaters, occupying O-linemen to allow the speedy outside LBs to sack the QB. However, that does illuminate the fact that the Eagles do need at least one more starting LB (plus depth), whether inside next to Ryans, or outside (placing Kendricks inside).

I doubt they will use their first pick on a safety or CB, having signed all four nominal starters in free agency. I know they’re not world-beaters (and Kenny Phillips is only signed to a one-year contract), but I think that’s WHY they were all signed — to bridge the gap between the present and the future. When you’re picking the fourth overall player in the draft, that guy has to come in and START for you on Day One. For me, that means they will draft either the best OT available (Joeckel or Fisher) or the best DL available (Star or Sharrif Floyd).

Definitely not an OLB, CB, safety, WR, guard, QB, etc. In my opinion.

started with chip kelly, a new team mentality and attitude first.
draft o line, dline secondary, land one more solid free agent on defense we’re good to go back to owning the division in no time, as in about 5 months from now…go birds!!!

Before I comment on the Eagles (I am a big fan and a season ticket holder for nearly 30 years) and their needs, I’d like to address Florio.
LOVE your site and the job your team has done. I think it’s time to kill the message board. The comments left by some people are ridiculous. Be a fan NOT a fanatic, guys.
The dream team comment was made by Vince Young 3 years ago. Vince Young scored 6 on the Wonderlic and this explains his comment. The fact ppl still grab onto it, sodomize grammar and attack others (while using it) is all the proof you need that the comments have jumped the shark. This is football NOT perez hilton.
The guy saying Peters has never been good proves SOME readers/commentators are clueless.
Top 50 player in NFL countdown last yr, a game changing OL. With Peters healthy and the return of 3 other starters, the OL is actually a team strength. BUT by drafting 1 of the 2 big tackles, the Eagles could have the Runyan/Thomas type cornerstone for next 10 years.
I say you take 1 of the tackles and come back with Manuel, the best QB (for Chip’s system) in this year’s draft.
In closing, 4-12 last yr AFTER a 3-1 start.
NONE of those teams in the NFC E are particularly scary. The division could go to any of them (hopefully, excluding Dallas).
Show some class, people. If you don’t have class, try to show good judgement OR intelligence.
    KING~out

How can any eagle fan have the balls to talk about the giants??? You guys are a sadddddd franchise with the most uneducated humans (both male and female and on average freakishly fat non stop cursing losers) as a fan base?

The Eagles are a 3 won team this year. Bottom line.

    2013
    Giants 13-3
    Skins 9-7
    Cowboys 6-10
    Eagles 3-13

Eli and Coughlin one step closer to canton baby!!!

  88. mrphatal says: Apr 10, 2013 9:03 AM

13-3? So your saying you are going to lose in the playoffs. The last 3 Superbowl wins have come from 9-7 10-6 teams (if my memory is right). Thanks for letting us know you dont think they will win one this year too.

This comes from a guy whos city spits on women and children, their players shoot themselves in the leg (with their own gun).

13-3? I want what you have been smoking.

The Eagles have a real chance to improve on the O-Line and the D-line in this draft. Just a reminder; it will take time for this team to be relevant again. 4-12 is 4-12. And without a real QB it could be a long, long time at the bottom of the division. Re-signing Mike Vick….REALLY?

  90. teaboy215 says: Apr 11, 2013 10:58 PM

I say Star Lotulelei is the way to go. I honestly do. With an Athletic Freak like Cox and a Monster like Star would make this D-Line FEARSOME for years to come. To be perfectly honest and call me insane. But I’d be more scared of Cox, Star and Trent Cole more than I would be scared of Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins first arriving to Philly before they even played a down. I understand those would say Floyd because he’s disruptive and he has more attitude, and it’s tough and fast coming off the line. But Star is similar but better. I love a player that’s Versatile. We can switch him in and out ANYWHERE on the D-Line. Whether It’s LDE/RDE, NT/DT. He can play the Whole line. He can switch in and out with Dixon, Cox, Isaac, and Thornton. I seer him mostly switching in and out with Isaac. Remember Isaac is NOT an every down player. He’s aging and needs a breather every few series. So, our Starter Star comes back in and dominates. I feel that if we draft Star Lotulelei, Eli Manning, Tony Romo, and RG3 would wet and crap their pants before even having the ball snapped. It’s one thing to have a good secondary, but what good is a good secondary if your whole entire D-Line is getting trucked? We have Dixon to put at NT but I don’t trust Dixon. Nothing against Dixon. I just don’t pay him any attention. But everytime I do hear about him or research him, He’s hurt. Thornton is okay but he doesn’t strike fear like a Suh or Wilfork. Star Lotulelei does. I see it. If he can bring that domination to the pros, the skies the limit to what the Eagles can accomplish offensively and defensively. But I have the gut feeling that Kelly is gonna play the role of Mr. Innovator and draft a offensive player. I don’t mind a O-Lineman. But O-Line can be patched up with a free agent. O-Line is not that bad. We don’t know IF our O-Line is really that bad because 3/5th’s of our Oline was on the IR. So, I have this opinion and analysis and I’m gonna stick right by it. Star Lotulelei is the WAY TO GO!

  91. teaboy215 says: Apr 11, 2013 11:02 PM

I say you Draft Star Lotulelei, Trade Foles for a 2nd Rounder or Late 1st round pick, Draft E.J. Manuel, draft Safety Matt Elam/Phillip Thomas(Get Kurt Coleman the hell outta here!) with the 2nd 2nd Round Pick. Draft Cornerback with the 3rd Round pick, go linebacker in the 4th, draft a Tight End with the 5th round pick, and draft for O-Line depth with the rest

  92. teaboy215 says: Apr 11, 2013 11:04 PM

Dee Milliner? You do know that our D-Line been getting trucked over the past 2 seasons right? And It still got trucked when Babin got Cut. Babin was a great Pass Rusher, but he left open big ass gaps where a Hummer could drive on through. Graham is good. Curry is a toss up, he obviously doesn’t fit the plans. So, if we been getting trucked it’s time to get a stout dude to place in the middle to disrupt everything and make it hard as hell for the opposing O-Line. On top of that he’s versatile. He can switch in and out with Isaac and switch to DE for a few plays. We have an Athletic freak on the Line with Cox. All we need is a stout dude to stop the run and wreak havoc once the ball is snapped.
