The Texans ran short on inside linebackers at the end of last season, something that owner Bob McNair said illustrated the need for more depth at the position in 2013.

Adding enough depth to survive injuries to three or four players at any position isn’t as easy as McNair made it sound in January, but the Texans have made a move to shore up the depth chart heading into next season. Linebacker Tim Dobbins’ agent David Canter announced Wednesday afternoon that his client has agreed to a one-year deal that will keep him in Houston for another year.

Dobbins made six starts for the Texans last season, most of them coming after Brian Cushing was lost for the year with an injury. Dobbins wound up on injured reserve in the postseason thanks to an ankle injury, leaving the team to rely on Bradie James and Barrett Ruud as they tried to advance beyond the Divisional Round.

Re-signing Dobbins won’t make it any easier to avoid problems with a series of injuries this time around, but he will provide them with a solid reserve as long as the first-string can remain on the field.
