Adrian Peterson is conflicted about the new helmet rule

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who has shown from time to time a willingness to drop his helmet and obliterate a would-be tackler, realizes that the new rule regarding the use of the crown of the helmet encompasses his playing style.

And so he doesn’t like it.  But he also realizes (reluctantly) that it’s a good thing.

“Sooner or later we’re going to be playing touch football,” Peterson told KFAN, before changing his tune.  “That’s just the passion in me that said that and then the maturity in me said, you know what, it’s an OK rule because it protects players.”

Still, Peterson thinks that the new rule provides more protection for defensive players.

“The one thing I do not like about the rule is they single it out towards running backs,” Peterson said. “From my point of view, when you’re looking at the defense and there’s eleven guys coming at you. There’s so many times that guys have came at me and lowered their helmet not with their face mask facing me.  They just lowered their helmet and came in and dived at me, my legs and my knees.”

Under the new rule, any defensive player that uses the top of his helmet against Peterson will be flagged, too.  Maybe once it happens a few times, Peterson and other offensive players will believe it.

  1. If guys continue to lower their heads against mvpeterson, there will be more injuries to defensive players. This guy is a beast!

  2. Adrian Peterson needs to stop crying. On a side note what RG3 needs is to come learn from a real quarterback like Tom Brady. Now that he doesn’t have any wheels he will need to learn how to actually throw the ball. Tom could even teach him how to braid hair correctly.

  3. AP doesn’t need no to lower his stinkin helmet to gain a bazillion yards a game.

    Signed,
    Tramon “Ole” Williams

  4. One thing I’ve never understood is how running backs can grab a defensive player’s facemask under the guise of a stiff arm and not get called, yet if the defender so much as gets within an inch of the facemask it’s a penalty.

    Peterson owns you.

Moreso than you own a piece of an NFL team with you *ahem* ‘stock’.

  6. The problem is that this new rule is extremely wishy-washy an not well defined meaning a ref could or could not throw a fla on virtually any play.

Additionally, power runners like Peterson are effectively forced to no longer attack the defense, because to run toward something your head will always be angled toward it.

So either the NFL has effectively banned the power running game… Or they have created a situation where the refs can decide they want to penalize certain teams, at any time, and they may pretty much do so on any running play..

  7. “Fix the helmets, Roger”… and stop trying to turn “America’s game” into a sissy game of two hand touch.

Why not do what NFL players did in the past when their career’s were threatened due to concussions?

Those players simply added extra padding “to the outside” of the helmets…

… like the Chiefs, Willie Lanier did.

…like the Bills, Mark Kelso did.

…like the 49ers, Steve Wallace did.

…like the Colts, Randy Dixon did.

ALL of these NFL players had their careers threatened due to concussions…and ALL extended their careers by using helmets with padding added to the outside.

The NFL knows that padding added to the outside of helmets works…but Roger Goodell would rather ruin the game with all his nutty ideas, than use helmets like those used by the players above.

If Goodell were truly concerned about “player safety”, he would mandate the use of helmets with padding added to the outside, NOW !

Obviously, Goodell has another agenda…making up rules that won’t work.

    …go figure !

    What’s his record vs GB?

    Curious.

  9. A constant reminder of how some of these rule changes are going too far. I find it pathetic Peterson had to reword how he felt initially, and he’s right every year the NFL gets a little bit softer.

  10. If you watch film from the 50’s and 60’s , running backs led with their shoulder pads, not their helmets. I know I’m an old timer, but leading with the helmet is something more common in the last 20 years or so.

  11. funny how there are commentors here calling AP a girl and to stop crying .. laughable.

he is probably the most ‘manliest’ of players .. a punishing player that can take it as well is dish it out.

and you guys are calling him a ‘girl’? laughable man .. just laughable

    Curious.

About 200yards + per game with the whole defense focused on him

  13. The best ever RB/MVP is right. Total discrimination towards a single position in football.
What stops that goof RG3 from committing the same ‘violent’ act?
    (besides the FedEx Turf)

LMAO. He could run blindfolded and still be better than anything the Skins can produce.

That’s why RJoke3 calls AD and asks for suggestions on how to rehab his knee. That’s because he can’t do it by himself. Just a fragile flash in the pan that will be out of the league in a couple of years while AD is just running up the records on his way to the HOF.

  15. Tokyosandblaster acting like the Packer’s achievements somehow reflect his own…how sad.

And the Vikings have won four times with Peterson on their team, not three. Also, it’s a team game. Barring 09 and 08, the Packers have been a superior team to the Vikings every other year Peterson has been on the team, so stop acting like it’s some amazing thing that the Vikes have a losing record against them with AP. He still tears them up on the ground each time.

If your boytoy Clay Matthews can respect him, I think you can too.

Yeah that wasn’t a fair assessment huh? Seeing as though every team runs circles around that swiss cheese defense that the Packers have. If not for Rodgers, that team would be a joke.

Never knew you were a Viking fan until I see you posting on every Viking related thread. The way you complain about the Vikings you could follow your own advice and quit crying too……….

  18. Goodell needs to go because he is destroying football. the NFLPA needs to make the owners get rid of him what ever they have to do.
the players get paid to hit and get hit.

  19. Hahaha hater gone hate, in it a comings fan but I can appreciate talent..call him whatever you want the dude is the best all round back in the league…he punishes and he’s agile aha..

  20. Yeah 3 out of 10 times? K you guys are paying Aaron Rodgers $2.50 a second until his contract is up cuz you have a ton of money plus clay Mathews jordy Nelson oh and your really good kicker mason Crosby. The Vikings can only afford so much and with our qb situation we need to run the ball 75% of the time and yet with that we managed to beat the packers once and lose by 2 possessions the other 2 games. I hate packer fans

  21. Defenders will be more likely to go after Peterson’s knees because they lack the fear of being full on thumped. Huge risk increase for monster RB’s like Peterson.

  22. Maybe Peterson should just stick to crying about being a “slave” who will make only $11.25 million this season. I can’t wait for the penalty flags to fly every time he touches the ball. And once they start testing for HGH, he’ll probably never touch the ball again anyway.

  23. Wait until Peterson gets a game winning, time expiring run called back because he obliterated a defensive player who tried to obliterate him on the way into the end zone, let alone when it happens in the post season and it costs the Vikings the game. Besides, a guy whose helmet has horns on the side of his head is categorically naturally preordained to lead with his head to score and to protect himself.

  24. I love getting inside your little heads.

PS, you’re just fine with some queef saying he averages 200 yards vs the packers but had to correct me on the number of wins?

    Well done. Lol

  25. I don’t agree with the rule but its the worst thing that could happen to the Vikings because it has already taken up space in Peterson’s head and the more he thinks, the less instinctive he will run, and the less instinctive he runs, the poorer his performance.

Can you imagine having to depend on Ponder to win games without an effective Peterson? This is a disaster bigger than the hiring of Childress, the Vikings just don’t realize it yet.

  26. anyone posting about goodell killing football know that he may help create new rules…but it has to be voted in by the competition committee? Which includes some players and coaches and then has to be voted in to effect by a majority of all 32 nfl coaches…which this rule was. 31 of the 32 voted yes except for the bengals….so…not that i like the guy (cause i dont), but..tighten up lol

if you hope for something like that why do u even watch football? you must have nothing going on in your sad life.

i get the fact that a lot of u guys are jealous (for whatever reason) that Adrian Peterson isnt on your favourite team but if you dont respect the guy you dont respect the game of football. I respect Rodgers and i hate the packers with all my heart.

  29. Well, anything to help counterbalance all the 15 yard penalties for hits on a defenseless receiver….

  30. filthymcnasty1 says: Apr 11, 2013 11:07 PM

I feel kind of bad for AP. Imagine Hank Aaron petering out at 9 HR’s short of Babe Ruth.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

    Petering out?

He arguably had the greatest rushing season ever. 9 yards short on 31 fewer carries, almost a half yard more per carry, coming off ACL, MCL & meniscus damage, while everyone in the building knows you’re getting the ball. All while taking a predicted 5-10 team into the playoffs. Yeah that’s something to feel ashamed of.

Now going 15-1 during the regular season only to lose your first play-off game is the definition of petering out. Or maybe it’s the definition of the ultimate choke job!

  31. Ok, lets get back to the issue, and a good one. Lets say a big back, even a Packer, breaks through the line, and the Safety runs up. What is going to happen? The Safety will lower his helmet. Now what? Will a penalty be called? This is a mess.

  32. This rule should not exist because the truth is players wear helmets for a reason and is just the nature of the game. The Vikings can still ride Peterson to a victory if they change up plays. I would be very offended by this rule if I was Adrian Peterson. This rule was likely made to slow him down.

It’s actually a smartphone. The Internet can go where
I go, at least here in New York. I know perhaps your ice
Shanty is hooked up with the finest that Minnesota “life” has to offer, but you’re really behind the rest of us if you’re still tethered to a computer.

I’m better than you now. I’ve always been better than you, and I’ll always be better than you.

    It isn’t even close.

  35. He came so close to eclipsing one of the most recognizable records in all of sports. Now he’ll be largely forgotten as “that Viking dude that couldn’t break the great Eric Dickerson’s all time rushing record – ole what’s his name.”

  36. AP’s comments were right on, and the new rule is terrible, not just for running backs, but for the game of football. Passing is already favored too much and has too many rules that increase passing, and this rule pushes the NFL toward even more emphasis on passing. This rule makes the game less balanced, and it makes it harder for RBs to protect themselves from defenders. It’s the worst new rule I can remember in a long time, even worse than the tuck rule.
