Pierre Garcon: RG3 is like Peyton, but more dynamic and dangerous

Robert Griffin III, Pierre Garcon AP

Pierre Garcon started his NFL career as one of Peyton Manning’s receivers before leaving for Washington last year and playing with Robert Griffin III. And Garcon says he sees a lot of similarities in the two quarterbacks.

But Garcon says that while Griffin has many of the same positive traits as Manning, Griffin’s athleticism allows him to attack opposing defenses in a different way.

“He can be just as good as Peyton,” Garcon said on NFL AM. “Peyton’s very skilled with his arm, Robert is skilled with his arm and his legs, so that’s what makes him more dynamic and more dangerous.”

Garcon said he sees a lot of the same traits between Manning and Griffin in the way they lead their teams.

“They are very similar,” Garcon said. “Quarterbacks are natural leaders, they take control of the huddle, their meetings, their teammates around them, communicate with all the players, from offensive linemen to receivers and running backs. They’re similar to each other. Robert’s going to be very good, and just as good as Peyton.”

That’s high praise, from the only receiver who has caught passes from both Manning and Griffin.

They even look alike in dim light.

He’s saying this after just 1 year where RG3 didn’t even play 16 games?

  3. whiskeywaters says: Apr 11, 2013 5:08 PM

Give me a break…….Let’s let RG3 prove his worth in the league for a few years before putting him next to dudes like Manning – one of the top QB’s of all time

  4. tatvin says: Apr 11, 2013 5:09 PM

well ofcourse he will say that RG3 is his current QB..
RG3 will never come close to PM

  6. slippyal2 says: Apr 11, 2013 5:11 PM

Peyton is dangerous with his mind, RG3 is a long way from that.

  7. ravensdominate says: Apr 11, 2013 5:11 PM

Too bad he was unlucky and was drafted by the redskins. No one has a prayer of succeeding in that dark pit of a franchise. That organization already cost him a major knee injury.

  8. kwjsb says: Apr 11, 2013 5:12 PM

A little early for that assesment. If you look at the 2007 Browns Derek Anderson looked like Farve.

Just imagine what the stories will be like if RG3 accomplishes something…

  10. kremis says: Apr 11, 2013 5:14 PM

He (Pierre) might want to join the concussion lawsuit…..of course RG 3 is only one superbowl win away from tying Peyton’s superbowl win total after only 1 year in the NFL

We need a lot more evidence before we go that far. He is good, but don’t sell Peyton short.

  16. lunarpie says: Apr 11, 2013 5:19 PM

RG3′s legs are indeed more dangerous than Peyton Manning’s because around makes RG3 more likely to have a season ending injury. Case in point, 2012 season.

Joe Flacco will win the Super Bowl before a mobile QB does. Case in point, Super Bowl XLVII.

  17. gdeli says: Apr 11, 2013 5:19 PM

but he’s gonna run around and get drilled over and over so he won’t last then like peyton. I hope rg3 learns to be less risky and just runs out of bounds.
Can I have your ear for a minute guys? how many of you get frustrated when you see a dude in your hometown gear(my examples are the mn vikings and wild) and you try to be nice and engage the person in small chit chat like…should the vikes take honeybadger and Manti Te’o in the draft? and he has NO idea what you mean or you ask the 2o some year old in the mn wild jersey…how do you like the acquisitions of suter and parise? and HE has NO clue what you are talking about? wow! your feedback would be great guys.

  24. phloorioisanarcissist says: Apr 11, 2013 5:24 PM

It takes years to learn what Peyton Manning had. His understanding of a defense, their assignments, formation, and who his go-to receiver is, BEFORE his offense was even fully lined up is unmatched. I will believe it when I see it. Not a Payton homer or a RG3 hater (I like RG3), but you can’t compare RG3 to Manning after one year. RG3 seems like a pretty smart guy but he cannot read a defense like Manning, at least not yet, and that is more important than having a powerful arm or being able to run a 4.40 40 yard dash as a QB.

  25. robertgriffin10 says: Apr 11, 2013 5:25 PM

  29. thegreatgabbert says: Apr 11, 2013 5:27 PM

  30. raideralex99 says: Apr 11, 2013 5:28 PM

Garcon forgot to mention the mostly important thing about being a QB … You need a brain.

  31. davidjcu says: Apr 11, 2013 5:30 PM

I don’t doubt it from the Aspect that Peyton Manning’s tool is his mind. He is a very cerebral player. RG3 isn’t a dumb jock playing QB he’s a really smart guy. In fact thats really what made last years rookie QBs so special is that they were all very very intelligent and true leaders. I think RG3 needs to develop more into a Steve Young rather than a Michael Vick.

  32. bangrhard says: Apr 11, 2013 5:31 PM

  37. 106reasons says: Apr 11, 2013 5:44 PM

    Did I miss something?

Everyone seems to think Garcon is saying RG3 IS (present tense) on the same level.

Garcon’s actual quote: “RG3 CAN be just as good as Peyton.” Conditional future tense. He didn’t even say RG3 WILL be as good as Peyton.

If RG3 can remain healthy, I believe he will be one of the great ones. The string of 6-straight perfect quarters that he put together (entire Eagles game + first half of Cowboys) was impressive, no matter who you are.

  40. bryantrulen says: Apr 11, 2013 5:50 PM

I don’t think people (fans) truly realize how much help RG3 received from the Shannahan’s, in particular, Kyle. The way they minimized what he had to read and see and built a system around his strengths….

  41. normaneinstein7 says: Apr 11, 2013 5:52 PM

He’s right. RG3 is going to be a HoF QB. I’m glad the Colts tanked games for Luck and left RG3 for us. The Colts didn’t deserve to replace Peyton with an elite QB like RG3 after losing games on purpose. With the #1 overall pick in the draft, the Colts select Andrew Luck, the 3rd best QB in the draft.

  42. cowboyhater says: Apr 11, 2013 5:52 PM

Keep it coming you moronic haters. It just adds fuel to the fire with the redskin “trolls” as all of you call the skins fans on this site. It was an honest assessment from Garcon, when comparing the two QB’s. I remember the same type of comments last year when RG3 was drafted. It’s fun to watch the skins continue to build, and start becoming that storied franchise that it has been in the past. If any fans deserve that, it’s the passionate redskin fan base, that had to endure all the nonsense that has taken place for the past 25 years. Please keep hating, because I like to feel the it’s us against world feeling. It gives me that much more satisfaction when we succeed. As for that raven “troll” that made that disparaging remark about the franchise, you might want to look back at the game last year and let me know how that turned out. HTTR!!

what a joke is arm is ok but how is he like Manning at all? Manning can read and manipulate defenses and is a pocketpasser and on the field offensive coordinator, while rg3 has one read to make then take off running…. we are also talking about a guy that is going to not play a full season during his first two, so how is he going to go 18-19 games make it to a superbowl with out getting hurt. IMO Payton is a terrible qb to compare him to i was think more like vick…….he will never be a success.

  51. Naji Mujahid says: Apr 11, 2013 6:09 PM

Clearly, 90% of you are bigots and can’t handle a legitimate comparison of a Black quarterback to one of your idols. If it were some guy at your local bar making the comparison and you wanted to engage in debate, fine. But this is somebody who has played with both quarterbacks. If anybody can make that assertion, its him; and he sounds like he thinks RG3 can be not just as good, but better. If he didn’t actually believe that, he didn’t have to go that far. So, respect his critique. Remember, he’s played with them; meanwhile you’ve just been watching from your couch. Most if you probably never played football at all and I’d you did, I doubt it was a skill position.

RG3 hasn’t done crap and dumb that people think he has. He plays in a crap division and has a coach limits his throws to like 10 a game so his stats appear better than they. Its a joke and most people dont bother to see it. Andrew Luck is the better QB, No question. RG3 will end up being the 4th best QB in his draft class.. Wilson smokes RG3 as well. Redskins are wishing they didn’t give up all those picks when they could have a better QB in Wilson.

And stop with the HTTR thing, that is the dumbest sh** in world, but then again you do have fans dress as girl pigs….

    Luck, Wilson, Consins…….RG3.

Consins will have a longer/better career than RG3.

  64. skarkattack1234 says: Apr 11, 2013 6:32 PM

You know, I understand why all the skins fans (and well-known trolls,) are on RG3s jock. He played extremely well as a rookie. If he gets and stays healthy (big-if) he could end up as a top-5 qb.

But I really don’t understand the Garçon love. I mean, one guys says top-3! Are you joking? I know it’s just homerism, but I’m a browns fan, and I would throw-up if I tried to say Greg Little was a top-3 wr.

    44-633-4
Yep, only 2 wideouts posted better numbers than that line last year. Yeah yeah he was injured. Doesn’t change the fact that that’s all he did. Durability IS a factor in how good or bad a wideout is.

I mean, he has never put together a season better than mediocre. Skins fans talk about him like he is Jerry Rice.

As for rg3 being better than Manning; no. Just no.

I think they win that argument on the grounds that it “worked out” pretty well, with the Redskins blowing a 14 point lead at home, and the Ravens winning a shootout in Denver vs. Manning the Great in one of the best playoff games ever, blowing away a previously undefeated at half-time (at home) Patriots team led by Tom Terrific, and then winning the Lombardi trophy vs. a really good(for a half at least) 49ers team that was 5-0 in the SB up until that point.
SB Champs > regular season win is a valid point I think.

The quote was,“He can be just as good as Peyton,” Garcon said on NFL AM. “Peyton’s very skilled with his arm, Robert is skilled with his arm and his legs, so that’s what makes him more dynamic and more dangerous.”
I Agree! Manning is accurate, intelligent and consistent. He is NOT dynamic. In all fairness we can only compare their rookie seasons as RGIII doesn’t have more to compare. Peyton led his team to a 3-13 record, RGIII led his team to a 10-6 NFC East title. Peyton had a League high 28 interceptions, RGIII set an NFL all time record with an astounding 4 interceptions. Peyton 25 TD, RGIII 20 TD. Peyton QB Rating 71, RGIII QB Rating an NFL record for a rookie 104. Peyton completion percentage. 56, RGIII 66.
It seems after a year one comparison Garçons statement bears out as fact. Like it or not RGIII is better ALL the way across the board. EVERY stat. Hate on that! LMAO

  76. oldway9 says: Apr 11, 2013 7:00 PM

Fact: Drop-back quarterbacks and pocket passers consistently start and win in the NFL.

Quarterbacks that start to replace throwing the football by running or scrambling, at least in last 10 years or so, get injured more frequently. Moreover, they rarely finish a season healthy, and RG3 got pretty much beat up last year by leaving the pocket. So take off running RG3, and in two or three years your injuries most likely will force you out of the game. Lastly, all one has to do is look at Michael Vick, and one can see the beating his body has taken recently. I ask, how effective is Michael Vick now?

  77. 40yearoldvirginian says: Apr 11, 2013 7:03 PM

  78. monkeyhouse77 says: Apr 11, 2013 7:08 PM

it amazes me how negatively people react to athletes for having opinions

if they go the generic route (like Garcon praising both RG3 and Manning) people complain because “what else would they say?”

and yet if they have an opinion or make an observation that goes against whats expected of them they get chastised for it.

Manning and RG3 both DO have great arms, and RG3 CAN run well, and they both are leaders of their respective teams.

Garcon didn’t say anything about RG3 having the same kind of football IQ as Manning which is what Peyton is known for that makes him stand out from the rest.

He did say that RG3 is more dynamic than Peyton, and he is and that’s what makes RG3 stand out.

all QBs in the NFL can throw, some of them can run…not all of them are great leaders. RG3 and Peyton Manning definitely are though.

  79. laserw says: Apr 11, 2013 7:14 PM

There is no way the China Doll, Griffin, is like Payton Manning.

Manning is a pure leader – he can direct 2 minute drives and leads repeatedly on the field.

The China Doll runs a 2 minute offense in 4 minutes, is a slug with no urgency in between plays, has never led his team while on the field, and exhibits ZERO PERCENT of Manning’s FIELD GENERAL tendencies.

In short, every player on the Redskin team has more leadership in their little toe than The China doll has in his entire potential career.

Redskins are wishing they didn’t give up all those picks when they could have a better QB in Wilson.

And stop with the HTTR thing, that is the dumbest sh** in world, but then again you do have fans dress as girl pigs….

    Luck, Wilson, Consins…….RG3.

Consins will have a longer/better career than RG3.”

Someone is forgetting the two minute drill that RGIII put together to beat the Cowgirls and Giants, and the blown defense against the wee-men in the first match up. Griffin is going to be great, it is clear he was the cream of the class last year, and the rest of you are ALL jealous. He did get his knee blown up, but he will be back to form and even more hungry, and knowledgable for the 2013 season. Hate on HATERS!!!!!

    ————————–

Your reading comprehension skills are impressive. However, your knowledge of 2012 NFL needs attention. Eagles were 4-12 last year and the Cowboys were 8-8. RG3 is still a work-in-progress. Plenty of mobile QBs come n go in the NFL. Rookie year RG3 gets a nasty season ending injury due to his style of play. Mike Shanahan’s time is limited in D.C. and he is fully aware of this fact. He’s going to max out on RG3 as fast as possible. Better trade for or draft some solid O-lineman ASAP. Washington could easily become the next rebuild project in the NFC East.

    Get the point?!?!?

You can’t compare Peyton and RG3′s rookie stats. Two way different eras of football in terms of the passing game. Look at quarterback stats before and after the 2004 season. Defenders couldn’t touch a receiver outside of five yards of the LOS and since 2009 receivers have the middle of the field to work with because they know they can’t be hit. I like RG3 and Peyton, but stats don’t tell the whole story.

  95. raideralex99 says: Apr 11, 2013 8:22 PM

Okay like get some facts straight and not bring in the race card.
The more games a QB plays the more experience he gets … that only make sense in ANY job.
The average life span of a NFL RB is about 4 years … the amount of hits they take that make sense too.
Now why do drop back QBs win SBs … they play more games get more experience and are less likely to get injuried since they don’t run as much.
I’m no rocket scientist but you have to admit that’s pretty easy to figure out why running QB don’t win SBs … the odds are against them.
I’m sick of hearing “How great a QB” after only ONE season … wow how many of these QBs have come and gone and yet NEVER won a Super Bowl.
Can RG3 win a Super Bowl? … he has the tools BUT if he continues to take unnecessary hits … he won’t. If RG3 is sooooooooooo good why doesn’t he stand in the pocket and find the open receiver?

Also, he talked about him being a natural leader, commanding the huddle and the locker room. He then said, RGIII can be good as Peyton( a matter of opinion, but the opinion of WR who has played with both). ….. Obviously, RGIII can’t be compared to Peyton after one year, but he was asked to compare the two. He simply answered the question.

To compare Griffin to Manning is idiotic.

Manning is a classic drop back pocket passer. He is the type of QB the nfl was built on, and this type of QB is the future of the league.

Griffin, Wilson, and Kapernick are all products of this flash in the pan, flavor of the month, gimmick high school option offense. These guys are more prone to big shots and more injuries.

Griffin, while an exceptional athlete, is awkward when he isn’t in the shotgun. When his threat to run is removed and he is under center he is less than ordinary.

He will not make it through this year if he plays like last year. —-He is a super QB, but as Clint Eastwood always said. “A man has to know his limitations”.

I love watching him play, I don’t think he will change his game. I just hope he does not end up lame, by the way he plays the game.

  133. gorebomb says: Apr 12, 2013 2:47 AM

RGIII runs a college style offense which bases its success off of the running game. If you are going to tell me he is on the road to becoming as great as Payton at least tell me his offense is based around his skills as a passer. Payton has his own playbook. Andrew Luck was slinging the ball all over the field last year, So at least you can say he has the potential to pass his way onto manning’s level. Kapernick and Wilson throw the ball better than RGIII, and they also know how to avoid getting cracked.

I remember all the trash talk I heard when the Skins picked him. But I just watched. When the season neared the halfway point, all the trash talkers comfirmed what they thought was true. He brought the team around quickly after that. His passer rating was near the top all year long. He obviously is accurate. Hence can read a defense pretty good considering he was a rookie. Even better that Luck. Yes he was injured in the playoffs, but he clearly was in command before he was injured. Not bad for a rookie. I am watching this year with extreme interest. I think, once again, he’ll make alot of losers eat their crow.

  138. davem23 says: Apr 12, 2013 7:14 AM

    From my perspecitve:
Garcon is emphasizing the qualities of leadership and his phyisical attributes, arm strength and accuracy as compared to #18.

As far a reading the defenses – when teams stayed in a 2 deep look and didn’t try to pressure the read-option stuff, RG3 struggled, but then learned how to attack it.

With that said #18 made a terrible mental error in his last game that really you would not expect from him. That interception ended the season, on that play #18 looked like Heath Shuler.

This offense forces the LB’s to decide whether to come up and presure or sag into coverage. How they react determines run/pass/scramble. Not forcing the RG3 to pick apart a defense. Maybe after year 3. #18 and the same can be said about Brady relies on preparation studying a teams tendencies and making pre-snap adjustments to improve the plays odds of success. RG3 is just not there yet, but he’s smart. There where times last year when he got the play call wrong but his abilities lead to succes.

Incase you haven’t guessed, Redskins season ticket holder.

  139. chalkruz1989 says: Apr 12, 2013 7:20 AM

Good for Pierre Garcon to go out there and vouch for his quarterback, even though it’s a complete farce.

We all know that Robert Griffin III is a tremendous talent and a guy that barring injury could become a great player but at this stage in his career it’s all prediction.

Garcon hasn’t been the talent that Redskins thought they were getting while he has shown some flashes.

But, lets be honest here, there is only one Peyton Manning. Say what you want but he’s won his Super Bowl, that’s all he needed to accomplish.

Dan Marino and Jim Kelly were legendary but in the SB column lies a goose-egg.

  140. koolrepetoire says: Apr 12, 2013 8:01 AM

So-called “Running” QB’s that have won a Superbowl: Staubach “Roger the Dodger”, Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, Joe Montana ( scrambled in & out the pocket), Steve Young, John Elway, Big Ben, & Aaron Rodgers. Fran Tarkenton went to 5 Superbowls. This so-called “Running” QB’s don’t win Superbowls is a stigma put on Black men. Doug Williams ran alot early in his career. Aaron Rodgers is a running QB. He rushes for at least 6 TD’s a year on average. A balanced QB is what teams want nowadays. RG3 is balanced. From a skillset he and Aaron Rodgers compare. Laser cannons with uncanny accuracy, with legs to extend plays, both extremely bright, except RG3 has world class speed.

  143. thesmartestmanever says: Apr 12, 2013 9:32 AM

in terms of taking a whole team on his shoulders and refusing to lose games. yeah I’d say both Peyton and RGIII share that trait. in terms of work ethics, refusing to let anyone work or study harder than them. I’d agree there too. so while the haters keep hatin’ those with true football knowledge would probably agree with Garcon’s statement.

  144. steelerben says: Apr 12, 2013 11:41 AM

RG3 has better arm strength and is more dynamic with his athleticisim than Manning ever was. There is no way to argue that he isn’t gifted physically.

Manning has a wealth of knowledge about football. Much of that was imparted by his father growing up, the rest was gained from hour upon hour upon hour of film study.

Both are very accurate passers. Both are noted as being leaders. Both are noted as being hard workers and spending long hours watching tape and studying the play book. Both are smart. Both are upstanding citizens that do a lot of charity work in the community.

RG3 isn’t as good as Manning yet. That isn’t what is being said. What is being said is that the potential to be great is there. Give RG3 five years to develop in the league and put a halfway decent team around him and then reevaluate the situation.

JaMarcus Russell had all the physical gifts to be more dynamic than Joe Montana.

Tom Brady was drafted in round seven and no one thought that he had the potential to be more than a career backup.

Potential doesn’t mean much until it is realized. And we will just have to see where this kid’s career goes.

  145. koolrepetoire says: Apr 12, 2013 1:27 PM

Don’t you love the same people that said the Redskins were stupid for trading all those picks to get RG3 still hate because they also said the Redskins would be 4-12, or 5-11, or 6-10, he’d fail under all the pressure, clearly Luck will be better, etc, etc. Eat your crow trolls! Not 1 of you predicted any of the success RG3 & the Redskins had. The polar opposite of an RG3 fanatic would be………a hater right? Why do they hate this dude you wonder? Obviously he’s a good kid, very intelligent, 2 parent household raised, no red flags, 1 woman guy, exciting to watch, polarized the NFL. These same haters will be RG3 fans in 2 years watch. The saddest part about sports is haters spend so much time hatin’ on people that they don’t know or have a reason to dislike that they miss greatness as it develops before their eyes.

First off, I am a Redskins fan, but I do agree that it is pre-mature to compare RG3 to Peyton Manning. However, RG3 does actually have a very good arm. I think too many people focus on his running, and overlook the accuracy and arm strength he possesses. He is extremely smart as well. I’m hoping the knee injury causes him to throw more and run less, ’cause I know he is a good passer, and I can’t wait for him to show us all.

  151. dukeearl says: Apr 14, 2013 1:13 AM

RG3 needs to avoid the hits more or he won’t have any knee strength left.

Even Obama told him to protect himself.

I don’t see a long future if management doesn’t fix the home field.

He will be playing on that field more often than any other QB. Chances on him getting hurt again are high if he doesn’t protect himself and if management doesn’t fix the field.

  152. diegozng says: Apr 14, 2013 6:40 PM

Alright, from what I read in this article, is that Garcon believes that his QB CAN be as good as Peyton, not that he currently is. Yes, that is quite high praise, but people need to realize how good of a rookie year RGIII really had. Also, that guy is extremely intelligent, and has hard work ethic as evidenced by him finishing school early and the fact that Andrews and shanahan are praising him for preforming rehab when he can. Yes, as of right now, no, RGIII is not Peyton Manning. Can he be? Yes. Could he be better? Yes. We will not know until a couple years from now? Yes. Also, please RGIII is completely different than Vick and Young so don’t bring up those comparisons, it just displays ignorance. I don’t think anyone can disagree that that draft class could potentially go down as one of the best. RGIII, Luck, and Wilson all have the potential to have amazing careers.

I AGREE WITH Pierre. In fact RGIII is BETTER than Peyton was at this point in his career, and has more ability and TALENT than he EVER will! Peyton has one ring and lost more games in the playoffs than he’s one, throws a ton of picks, and because he’s sooo deficient physically he has to over compensate, mentally. That is what he’s thrown for a bunch of yards and TDs not because he’s just naturally that “good”. Because you all don’t want to recognize and/or accept the future of the league LOOKS like RGIII and will never look like Peyton again, don’t be mad..just accept it, and move on. ;-)

But when you enter the realm of dynamics, we’re talking alot more than just passing the football and audibles. The one dynamic that Peyton does bring is his ability to call a touchdown play from the line of scrimmage. But that’s basically it. Be honest, does Peyton have a big time arm? No, not now, and he never really did. Big time speed? Heavens no. Peyton is a surgeon when it comes to being a field general, the best. He’s the prototypical nfl qb. Or what used to be prototypical. But this new breed of qb is truly dynamic. Not just rg3 but luck, Wilson, and kaepernick. They are all more “dynamic” than Peyton manning. As is Aaron Rodgers. Does that relate to them being a better qb? Probably not but only time will tell. All I’m saying is, the proof is in the pudding. Dynamic does NOT mean better. It simply means that one person possesses more intangibles, whether it be physically, mentally or all of the above. Peyton never needed speed or a huge arm, so I hardly think he’ll call himself dynamic. Peyton is Peyton.

I’m a skins fan btw HTTR
