Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew played just six games during the 2012 season, which means it’s been quite a while since he’s been on a football field.

It will be a little while longer before Jones-Drew is able to change that, but the finish line for his rehab is in sight. Jones-Drew’s left foot has healed enough for him to ditch his walking boot and start jogging after spending the first chunk of the offseason finishing up his degree at UCLA.

“I just got back to Jacksonville a couple weeks ago from school, just have been rehabbing every day and getting used to the offseason program,” Jones-Drew said during an appearance on the NFL Network. “I’ll be back at full speed by probably the end of May, beginning of June, and I just can’t wait to get back out there and play. I only had six weeks of football last year, so it’s just going to be exciting to get back and be with my teammates.”

If Jones-Drew’s timetable holds, he should be available to take part in June’s minicamp. The Jaguars probably won’t push him too hard too fast since a healthy Jones-Drew figures to be their best offensive weapon, but getting some work in before the start of training camp would likely make everyone feel better about Jones-Drew’s status heading into the season.
