Ravens take minimal risk with McClain

McClain Getty Images

Sometimes, a guy who doesn’t get it suddenly gets it after he has been cut.  If that’s the case with former Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain, the Ravens will have gotten a steal.

If it isn’t, they’ll be able to move on with minimal expense.

McClain’s one-year, $700,000 base deal has no guaranteed money.  And so if the Ravens decide McClain still doesn’t get it (or simply doesn’t have it), they can move on without paying him anything more than the offseason/preseason per diem.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, McClain can make another $400,000 in “very reachable” playing time incentives.

Other teams were interested in paying McClain more than the Ravens offered, but McClain opted to seize on what he perceives to be a great opportunity with G.M. Ozzie Newsome and coach John Harbaugh.

If he sticks, the Ravens will be sporting a law firm-style lineup at inside linebacker:  McClain, McClain & McClellan.  And if a certain Notre Dame linebacker slides to No. 32, the Ravens can open the home office of McClain, McClain, McClellan, & Te’o.

Specializing in missing persons.  Specifically, those who never existed.

I wish the Ravens all the best, but this guy is super slow, dumb and a turd.

    Good luck.

Simply amazing. Ozzie is a genius. What a pickup

I think with the offseason signings, Ravens are preparing to move up to take a left tackle or WR should one fall.

They have made signings to ensure that they don’t have to reach for a defensive position in the draft.

That’s why Oz is a Wizard!

    a risk nonetheless

Great move. If it doesn’t work he’s gone a probably out of the league. He will give his best effort or he’s done for good. Anyone who thinks otherwise is simply hating or just doesn’t get the nfl

Missing people. That describes the Ravens search for fans in Maryland. Nothing is harder than being the second team in a market to the Redskins. The Ravens can’t beat the Redskins on the field and they can’t beat them off the field.

I cant wait to see my first “Great signing by Ozzie, he is the best talent evaluator ever blah blah blah” post, followed by the Baltimore…great home for another criminal LB post…

Ravens fans, last week, you were telling Cinci fans how they were a perfect fit for a criminal. Now youre happy that he is a low risk high reward player. Just stop talking smack already.

He is a smart player, at least we now know that much.

In 2013 Cleveland gets Kruger, Baltimore gets Dumervil, Huff, McClain, Spears and Canty.
Hmmm..Cleveland just needs to move on. They can’t blame Baltimore for their woes.

Awesome pickup by the ravens. This guy is a difference maker. Man Ozzie is the best. How will the AFC north ever compete with the mighty ravens. Wow. The Steelers mine as well not show up. Just forfeit. What a powerhouse team this is. They will repeat easily! Everyone pack it in. The 2013 NFL season is a wrap. Just Gove the Lombardi to the ravens. I’m just sooo awww struck by this organization from the top down! In case you don’t know that’s some steeler nation sarcasm Ratbirds!!! BlahHahaha

I hope the “Great OZZY” has a back up plan…….since when is a GM great? How about your Coach? He has to get all these turds to play together after your “great” GM gutted it. Nice plan.

  17. nflfolly says: Apr 11, 2013 10:04 AM

This is why Ozzie is the best GM and Reggie McKenzie the worst. Mckenzie has taken the Raiders to new lows. Hopefully for Raider fans he will get fired.

  18. ravenmomma says: Apr 11, 2013 10:08 AM

I like this signing because I suspect reality is hitting this guy and with some coaching and mentoring, we’re going to see his talent explode on the field. This will prove to be a steal for the Ravens. The Ravens are a well respected, well run, successful organization that many players see as their ultimate opportunity.

Harbaugh will take no crap from McClain…you don’t want to be in the Harbaugh doghouse (Just ask McKinnie). The Ravens really have nothing to lose and everything to gain and this is a great opportunity for both team and player.

  20. jgrange says: Apr 11, 2013 10:08 AM

This is good for Rolando because he has less space on the field to process which means he will probably perform marginally better than he did in Oakland. He’s still not a very good player and considering that he was called the QB of Bama’s defense he was a MASSIVE bust.

Huff will be cleaning up his missed gap assignments and being hung out to dry just like he did to him in Oakland.

I love how the Steelers and Redskins fans ridicule even the minor moves the Ravens are making. Poor souls. This is all they have to cling to after yet another disappointing season brought on by their own colossal failures both on and off the field. It’s no coincidence that both teams have invested everything in their quarterbacks, both of whom just can’t seem to the get the job done. Let’s hope RGIII at least understands that he isn’t Superman. The other guy is so mentally fogged up — God help him.

  31. bigdon76 says: Apr 11, 2013 11:05 AM

  32. jarvis1104 says: Apr 11, 2013 11:11 AM

I love the Steelers but I don’t act like every move the team makes is gold. Too many Ravens fans are praising Ozzie no matter what he does. This signing isn’t impressive. Plain and simple. He’s young, yet he’s only a 2 down LB. Those are a dime a dozen in this league. Theres a reason he passed through waivers. He’s an average LB at best and theres no way Baltimore makes this signing if they aren’t desperate. The Ravens don’t usually sign guys like this.

What are you talking about? Maryland is Ravens nation and always will be, you can tell yourself that the redskins are the top team in Maryland but we know that cant be true when the Ravens are in fact sitting on top of the football world. Go be jealous somewhere elese and pray bob can play a whole season.

Sounds like We can’t lose on this one. He must believe he’s got it or he’d be going somewhere else, and if he doesn’t have it, we shed him for nothing more than a per diem rate!! If he plays well (like for a new contract) then the league minimum will be a steal!! Win for him / Win for us!

  35. gpry says: Apr 11, 2013 11:21 AM

So let me get this straight the Ravens signed Dumervil, Canty, Spears, Huff, and McLain for less than what Cleveland paid for a one trick pony back up in Paul Kruger? WOW!!

  36. daneraider1 says: Apr 11, 2013 11:34 AM

  37. r8derfan33 says: Apr 11, 2013 11:37 AM

I think McClain was cut from the Raiders not only for lackluster play but because the rookie wage scale wasn’t installed at the time. Had this guy buy been making around $2 million a year, I think we would’ve kept him around. I think the Ravens are a great organization and if anybody can get him to turn it around would be them. Good luck Mr. McClain.

  38. morganstan100 says: Apr 11, 2013 11:40 AM

“theres no way Baltimore makes this signing if they aren’t desperate.”

Look at the trends, jarvis1104. The last five years, Steelers go from SB champs to no playoffs at all, to SB goats, to getting Tebowed, to no playoffs at all. Ravens have been in the post season (and won) each year and (in case you hadn’t heard) won the SB this year. Both teams lost important players in the off season. But the Ravens’ defense looks like it’s going to be even stronger. Steelers continue to sit on their hands, unable to stop the bleeding. Ravens have much more salary cap space left. Steelers are going to be emptying out their wallets just trying to sign rookies.

So, who’s desperate? My prediction is: if you want to watch good Steeler football, check out NE v. Miami this year.

  39. nflfolly says: Apr 11, 2013 11:41 AM

Raider fans you are looking at 2-14 or worse. Reggie Mckenzie gave away his starting QB for nothing, lost the best defensive player last year in Wheeler most likely because he didn’t beleive in the train wreck that Mckenzie has created.McKenzie is the worst GM because he brought in the Zone blocking scheme and destroyed the offense.then after a year of this debacle he decides maybe that wasn’t the smartest thing to do.Ya think. There are many Raider fans not buying into his excuses.

  40. nardointhenati says: Apr 11, 2013 11:43 AM

Ok, McClain was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, a 2 time All SEC LB, a Lambart Award and Butkus Award winner at Alabama where they ran a
3-4 defense. Oakland takes him #8 overall and plugs him into a average 4-3 defense and struggles but still leads the team in tackles and he’s being called a bust? ISLB in a 3-4 is a totally different animal then MLB in a 4-3 so its no big shock he struggled a little. I think Coach Pees is licking his chops and cant wait to see what a healthy, 23yr old, with a chip on his shoulder brings to the table.

  41. lovefootball4life says: Apr 11, 2013 11:47 AM

Like I’ve said before this is a perfect opportunity for McClain. An organization that can provide direction and Ray Lewis who most certainly would be willing to offer advice on how to deal with off field distractions and devote his energy to the team. It’s all in McClain’s hands, if he screws this up he deserves what he gets. His first move, to select the Ravens even though he could have done better elsewhere is a good first sign.

  42. jgrange says: Apr 11, 2013 12:00 PM

McClain, one good year in his career who was under the old CBA and liked to go back home to Decatur, AL, and shoot the sh**, literally, with all of his old homies. That’s a bust and it is why the Ravens are only spending $700k on him. Nardo, get some perspective.

  43. richabbs says: Apr 11, 2013 12:16 PM

Signing McClain is probably a good indication that the Ravens will not be selecting a LB in round one, but even if they do decide to take a LB, it certainly won’t be Te’o. Ozzie definitely watched that Alabama v. Notre Dame game and that was not a pretty game for Te’o. There’s a better chance of Te’o meeting his “ex-girlfriend” then him be taken by the Ravens in round one of the upcoming draft.

  44. sschmiggles says: Apr 11, 2013 12:39 PM

I despise the Ravens and love trolling/trash-talking their fans, but really, how could anyone possibly view this move as a risk?

If he doesn’t work out, you cut him. If he does, then you at least got a guy who can be a good run-stopping LB, if not more. Good teams can afford to sign guys like this.

  49. thetwilightsown says: Apr 11, 2013 2:31 PM

Let me explain to you all why, truly why, we Raider fans hate this signing:
It’s not because a player was stolen from us – because he wasn’t. We cut him.
It’s not because of the money he stole from us – we’re still recuperating from Jamarcus, and Reggie’s suspension last season equated a nice little post-booting jab in that it voided a few million dollars from what we owed him.
It’s not even because we’re struggling and maybe a strong team like the Ravens could luck out on him.

It’s because this piece of human garbage, this scab on the balls of society basically got himself kicked off the team because he just didn’t want to try when it meant so much work
    – and in a way, he’s being rewarded. The Ravens just won the Super Bowl. We know this. Everyone (except maybe Steelers fans and somehow… Redskins fans??) knows this.

Hard working people who love football and enjoy the escapism it provides are watching a spoiled fool – and I do mean FOOL – throw million$ around; commit crimes that would land any one of us in prison for a decade; essentially QUIT on our beloved team out of pure stubborn immaturity; be rewarded by landing with a solid organization after showing the heart of a full on coward.
Everyone knows the Ravens won the SB last year, but everyone knows that an ungrateful, arrogant, childish turd just got handed a gold star for his behavior and all because he was low enough to go this far. THAT’s why Raider fans are so bitter at this guy. He just decided he didn’t want to try, got paid, then pouted his way out of town. I truly, sincerely hope that his career slides into complete and utter disgrace. I mean that. I hope all the bad things in life happen to this piece of trash… and that one day, just once, we get to see DMC or some future Raider running back plow his arse like the dirt clod he is.

I don’t understand how all this “shape up or ship out” talk and him getting his act together is supposed to help McClain quickly fight through blocks. That’s his problem. He runs into blockers as if it’s his job to free up his fellow tacklers. Like he’s a nose tackle 5 yards in the defensive backfield.

He could turn into your favorite most upstanding citizen that you’d want to marry, it’s not going to help him stop off RBs. The talent level we thought was there, is not.

  52. sbaltimore says: Apr 11, 2013 3:04 PM

Unlike other Ravens fans, and some so-called experts, I don’t see this as a low risk high reward plan. I see it as a low risk LOW reward plan. This guy is not only a societal menace, he’s also average or below on the field. Where is his “high reward” supposed to come from? His college days? Or that damn PFF site that had Matt Birk ranked as one of the top centers when the guy was getting bowled over by Wilfork in 2011? PFF seems to be about the ONLY site that ranks McClain highly. Most people watching him rank him as middle of the pack or below. So again…low risk, low reward…okay. Low risk, HIGH reward? I don’t think so.

Furthermore, John Harbaugh gets rid of guys who talk back to him. Is he really the kind of coach who can deal with a guy like McClain? Belichick, maybe. Harbaugh, doubtful.

The networks don’t want to waste their prime time watching the Ravens destroy the Steelers on week one. Steelers can’t possibly get it together that soon. Last year Denver murdered them. The year before they were humiliated by the Ravens. When games are that lopsided, people go to bed except Steeler fans who stay up surfing the Internet for pix of those six trophies.
