Bengals close to bringing Alex Smith aboard

Alex Smith AP

Quarterback Alex Smith had a much longer flight to get to his new team than tight end Alex Smith did.

According to Geoff Hobson of the team’s official website, the Bengals are “getting close to a deal,” with the former Browns tight end.

Smith became extraneous in Cleveland when his old team added Kellen Davis and Gary Barnidge this offseason. The 30-year-old Smith gives them a solid player to pair with Jermaine Gresham.

Smith was an acceptable receiver earlier in his career with the Buccaneers, but he’s only caught 31 passes in the last four years.

The best thing the TE Alex Smith is you can really screw people who aren’t paying attention in your fantasy football auction drafts.

31 catches in 4 years? Damn, Kellen Davis was actually an upgrade.

Depth. Orson Charles should be the number 2. He was a steal in the 4th round of last years draft. This is Dalton’s year to shut the nay sayers mouths. But then again what were Drew Bree’s numbers in his third year or Joe Flaccos? The fifth year is really the make or break year for a QB I have a feeling Andy isn’t waiting till his 5th year to put up gaudy numbers. 30+ touchdowns this year! Who Dey

As a Browns fan, I will admit that he is a good blocking TE. He even played a little FB this past season. He although, can’t catch the ball, but Gresham is there for that. He’s be a good pickup for the run game.

Dalton just had one of these moments:

“Oh crap, what the hell is…….. oh wait, cool.”

almost as confusing as the players zach miller, which in all reality is even more confusing because they both play tight end.

Who else thought Cincy brought in the former Niners qb? It would have been an upgrade over Dalton…

Yeah too bad Gresham had bricks for hands last year so it doesn’t do us much good picking up a good blocking TE. We need a TE who’s more reliable on catching the ball. Gresham was god awful especially toward the end of the year last year.
