Cooley wants to play for Redskins or no one

His release came as a mild surprise last year, and his return on a one-year deal wasn’t a shock after Fred Davis tore an Achilles tendon.

In 2013, long-time Redskins tight end Chris Cooley remains a free agent after nine NFL seasons.  He told WUSA on Tuesday that he hasn’t heard from the team about a possible ninth season.

“I have no clue but you can ask [G.M.] Bruce Allen though or [coach] Mike Shanahan,” Cooley said, laughing.  Cooley added that he wants to play for no one other than the Redskins.

“I’ll always be a part of the Redskins, I’m not part of the current roster right now but I’m part of this community because they embraced me so much as a player,” Cooley said.

In nine games with two starts in 2012, Cooley caught only one pass.

  1. “Long-time Redskins tight end Chris Cooley remains a free agent after nine NFL seasons. He told WUSA on Tuesday that he hasn’t heard from the team about a possible ninth season.”

Wait, “after nine NFL seasons” he hasn’t heard from the team “about a possible ninth season”? Something there doesn’t make sense.

  2. Rarely seen loyalty in the NFL.

Hopefully he’ll find his way into radio/tv coverage for the team at some point. Great personality and connects with fans well.

  3. Loved him in his prime, but after the knee injury he wasn’t the same. He cannot get any separation from defenders anymore. Retirement isn’t too bad an option. No other team is going to come knocking. Thanks for the memories Chris!

  4. His return will depend on what happens in the draft. The Redskins will be looking to draft a TE in the middle or later rounds. If they land their target, it’s probably the end for Captain Chaos is a player, but certainly not as a Redskin. If they don’t, he’ll come back as the team’s third TE.

Me thinks he’s holding out this year for two cases of beer…………………………………………………….

    Mmmmmmmmm, BEER!

It worked for John Riggins, why not Cooley?

Also, is this a throwback Tuesday article? This is the same exact thing he said when he was cut last season.

  6. I don’t know what’s more annoying, reading what logicalvoice has to say, or reading other people comment on what he would have to say. No one cares, logicalvoice jokes aren’t funny anymore.

  7. I actually liked Cooley the player and person. A lot of respect from a Cowboys fan. I’m sure the Skins could use him, but the NFL is a business. Can’t quite say I’d want to play for one team and no one else. That will keep others from contacting you if you truly enjoy playing the game.

  8. if the headline is true, then Chris will always be welcome anywhere in the DMV forever.
As for losers of other teams commenting on what some obnoxious ‘skins fan might have to comment on any topic, it appears that he may have owned you on this one . . .
HT NFC East Champs . . . go ahead, do it, get used to it

  9. Could you find a lamer team to pledge your allegiance to?

you make absolutely no sense! as a matter of fact, the skins were one of the most exciting teams playing last year.

newsflash, no other team wants him but the lowly Failedskins

Here’s the one thing I’ve never understood about you. You only started to post about the Redskins after they drafted RG3 and now you negatively chime in on every single thread related to the team. If you were a troll like logicalvoice you’d only come out of the woodwork every once in a while to post moronic comments, but, without fail, if there’s a Redskins thread, your name shows up.

Is your life so meaningless and pathetic that validation for your existence solely hinges on RG3’s failure and Andrew Luck’s success? You are a sad, little man and every ‘Skins fan feels truly sorry for you.

  11. This pro-bowl free agent TE will only play for his beloved Redskins. This would mean something if it was 2006 still. What ever will the other 31 teams do without his 1 catch performance from last season.

Says the biased Redskins fans that HAD to announce to everyone hes a redskins fan in his name… cuz u know, the redskins are soooo awesome

  13. Cooley, Thanks for all your contributions over the years. your strengths, and performances over the years truly have entertained us as Redskins fans across the nation would agree. However if you are willing to ride the pine as a number three, I have to question your competitive nature at this stage of your career. This is a young man’s sport son, time to let it go. HTTR!!!

  14. Cooley: “I want to be a loser and nothing else” hahaha this guy is terrible and he’s like the Redskins fan’s favorite player. The jokes never end with this franchise.

  15. If Cooley came back this year he would be the 4th TE behind Davis, Paulson, and Paul.
    To ChokingPeyton’sPurple Keck 18,
You look down on the Skins when your Indy Colts have win one SB and they had one of the best QBs of all time behind center. My Son’s won three with virtual nobodies at QB.
Don’t give me that lime of bull that your sorry (donkey) of a team one two SB’s because our isn’t true. The Indy Colts have nothing to do with the Baltimore Colts. That franchise ceased to exist as soon as those Mayflower trucks showed up on Baltimore.

  16. Haters can hate, anyone with minimal football knowledge can clearly see the Skins are on the rise its the same pattern the Broncos had b4 back to back Super Bowls, Cooley is a great part of Skins history, he can have a roster spot on my team anytime, Colts fans have no room to talk, one Superbowl in all those Manning years…total underachievement

stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Come on man, GET PAID.
    __________
He’s set financially. If he comes back, it’s because he loves playing football, and the DMV wants him back no matter how over-the-hill he is.

Ravens fans are bizarre. For a great team that just won the Lombardi trophy, they have a massive inferiority complex. I’m from DC, and most people around here have a general respect for the Ravens. Ravens fans, however, seem to take personal offense when someone in the DMV area supports the Redskins instead of the Ravens. When a Redskins fan says “I think London Fletcher is a great linebacker,” the Baltimore response is not “I think Ray Lewis is a better linebacker,” it’s “London Fletcher sucks and doesn’t deserve to wash Lewis’ jock strap”.

Your team is better, they just won a trophy declaring them the best team in the NFL; what more do you need, for the Redskins to get kicked out of the NFL and disband as a franchise? When you rag on inferior teams, it doesn’t make your team better, it just makes you look like a weak and petty individual.

It’s because he’s actually an NFC East fan who just attacks DC. Think about it, why would a Colts fan ever name themselves after Manning’s neck, especially before they knew they were getting Luck? That would be like a Redskins fan calling himself Robertsknee.

Says the fan that is posting on a Washington team message board.

  21. Don’t you just love how when you come into a Redskins article to post something regarding our Redskins team & the 1st 10 people are usually the same trolls logging in & out of their different names giving themselves thumbs up & they wait until true Redskins fans post to log in & out different names to give thumbs down? Chris Cooley, our beloved H-Back from Utah State, an NFL overachiever. No way Niles Paul is better than him.
