Report: Caleb Hanie to sign with Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens appear to have found a new backup quarterback for Joe Flacco.

According to Jeff Dickerson of ESPNChicago.com, the Ravens are expected to sign former Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos quarterback Caleb Hanie.

Hanie will likely compete with Tyrod Taylor for the backup job behind Joe Flacco. Hanie spent the first four years of his career in Chicago before signing with Denver last season. Hanie has appeared in 10 games, making four starts for an injured Jay Cutler in 2011, and thrown for 679 yards and three touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

Hanie did not see the field last season as the backup to Peyton Manning in Denver.

12 Yards Total Passing for all QBs combined not named Manning.

The number of elite QBs in the league stays fairly constant, but the suckitude of the backups keeps increasing.

Bear fan here. This guy sucks. The champs better find a better backup if Hanie has to play you’re screwed!

Who the hell is Hanie’s agent, Karl Rove?

^Agreed. A couple years back he was solidified in a third-string role. Now he’s a backup for a team that just won a Super Bowl?

    Dream Team!

Because teams go with their #1 guy, develop them, and back ups never see the field.

Caleb Hanie – QB – Free Agent

ESPN Chicago reports the Ravens are “expected to sign” free agent QB Caleb Hanie.
Hanie, 28, spent last season as a weekly inactive behind Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler in Denver. He was released last month. Hanie saw the most extensive action of his career with the Bears in 2011. He started four games down the stretch with Jay Cutler injured and threw three touchdowns and nine interceptions, killing any chance Chicago had at the playoffs.

Don’t they watch TV in Baltimore? WTF

If Caleb Hanie is your backup, you have no backup. Just horrible, not a clue. Yes, I’m bitter.

  14. watermelon1 says: Apr 16, 2013 3:12 AM

So is he the backup or is he competing for the back up job?

    Can’t really be both.

My guess is he’s just a camp body and won’t be on the final roster.

The back-up spot is Tyrod Taylor’s to keep or lose. I doubt he’s losing it to Haine…

He’s better than Curtis Painter, though I think most people on this site are also in that group.

Lets hope Flacco is healthy next year or we are toast

    camp arm

  17. whacko4flacco says: Apr 16, 2013 6:31 AM

He won’t beat out Tyrod Taylor. Hanie is a body and extra arm to throw footballs during OTAs and training camp, nothing more. See Curtis Painter last year. The Ravens like Tyrod.

Who needs a backup when Joe Flacco has never missed a game. Toughest QB in the north, no doubt about it.

  19. andylucksneck says: Apr 16, 2013 7:40 AM

    Better QB than flacco.

  20. classyjacklambert says: Apr 16, 2013 7:45 AM

Good for Hanie, he found a place where he can compete for the starting position.

Que Ravenator to tell us this another shrewd move by Ozzie and that this move singlehandedly gives them a likelihood of winning the next 12 Super Bowls and that signing “quality” players like Hanie makes it easy to be a Ravens fan…

  22. larrydavid7000 says: Apr 16, 2013 8:23 AM

way to go buzzards I hope fluco goes down and bring in haine .if that happens you will not see another win. good job buzzards.!!!!!

  23. Andrew Bailey says: Apr 16, 2013 8:28 AM

You’d think contending teams would do a little more to ensure they have a decent back-up QB.

  24. morganstan100 says: Apr 16, 2013 1:27 PM

Ozzie always has a plan. Just because jealous fans from 8-8 teams can’t figure it out is not our problem. That’s why Ravens are the Superbowl Champs and the Steelers are stuck in the basement.

  25. bigdeuceuno says: Apr 16, 2013 3:15 PM

He’ll b cut by the start of the season or on our practice squad i get it we need sumone to take sum off season workout snaps n give our defense sumone to tackle back there Go RAVENS!
