Team needs: Pittsburgh Steelers

Bettis Getty Images

The Steelers need something that few draft picks ever immediately give any team:  leadership.  The only way to fix that moving forward is to find players who are likely to become leaders in the future.  Of course, there may not be a future for the people picking the players if the team doesn’t improve before this year’s rookies become some future year’s leaders.  So here are the areas where the Steelers need to focus in order to buy time for this year’s incoming players to eventually become leaders.

Running back:  The Steelers keep saying they want to return the focus of the offense to the running game.  That’s hard to do without a chain-moving, old-school running back.  Rashard Mendenhall is gone, and none of the other in-house options conjure memories of Franco Harris or Jerome Bettis.  In 2004, the Steelers were overdue to get a franchise quarterback.  In 2013, they’re overdue to get a franchise tailback.

Receiver:  Even with Emmanuel Sanders still in the fold for one more year, the Steelers need to think about 2014, when Sanders likely will join Mike Wallace as third-round picks who picked up and left after four seasons in Pittsburgh.  The Steelers have done a great job finding quality receivers in later rounds of the draft; they need to do it again.

Linebacker:  To vindicate the decision to cut James Harrison and later to rebuff his interest in coming back for less money, the Steelers need a solid replacement.  Especially with Harrison likely landing in Cincinnati.  Jarvis Jones presents an intriguing option with the team’s first-round pick.  With other needs, however, using their first-round pick on a rush linebacker may be a luxury they can’t really afford.  Unless Jarvis Jones is there at 17.

Quarterback:  Apparently, Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich won’t be back, replaced by Bruce Gradkowski as the understudy to Ben Roethlisberger.  It would make sense to spend a late-round pick on a guy who could be developed to serve as the backup over the next few years — especially with Roethlisberger’s injury history.  He has appeared in all 16 regular-season games only once in his career.

CornerbackKeenan Lewis is gone and Ike Taylor is getting closer to the end of the road.  With the front seven not as potent as it used to be, the secondary needs to improve, or the defense won’t.

Tight end:  A torn ACL suffered late in the 2012 season by Heath Miller makes the position a question mark for 2012.  It could be time to think about finding a long-term replacement.

Offensive line:  For the first time in years, the line isn’t as big of a need — in part because other needs trump it.  Late-round depth would be helpful a year after David DeCastro and Mike Adams arrived via rounds one and two, respectively.

    Team needs- non-obnoxious fan base

  2. gpclaw says: Apr 16, 2013 9:09 AM

Steelers do have a need at LB, but it’s at ILB not OLB. The statements made by the Steelers this off-season seem to indicate that they have confidence in Worilds ability to take over at ROLB, and Dick LeBeau is very high on Adrian Robinson. That’s not to say that the position can’ benefit from an upgrade, but it’s not nearly as big of a need as WR, RB, S and DL (Cam Hayward and Hebron Fangupo are the only D-lineman under contract beyond 2013).

  3. morganstan100 says: Apr 16, 2013 9:10 AM

OMG!!! I have never seen a team in such bad shape. They need running backs, receivers, a quarterback, an entire defense. Let’s hope the punter is solid because he’ll be seeing lots of action this year.

Can’t wait to see Ray Horton’s Defense eat this team alive. Dawg Pound!

A non annoying and obnoxious fan base should sit a top the steelers’ needs list…

  7. ravenatorlikesboysbeeholez says: Apr 16, 2013 9:22 AM

I wish Dwyer would break through his conditioning issues and be the starter. 5’11,” 229 lbs and 4.5-4.6 speed. Career 4.3 YPC too. I’m one of the few wants to see him get another chance. So 1st round: corner or safety, 2nd round: tight end or receiver, 3rd round: inside or outside linebacker.

  8. dickroy says: Apr 16, 2013 9:22 AM

The Steelers have one of the best fan base in the world.
I know we have many needs, but I am hoping they will get Eddy Lacy if he should still be there.

  9. pgh15212 says: Apr 16, 2013 9:26 AM

Jarvis Jones will not be a Steeler. Here is a complete list of edge rushers drafted since 1998 that had a 4.80 forty or worse at under 250 pounds: Casey Dailey, Bryant McNeal, Cheta Ozougwu, and Kroy Biermann. Biermann has been a solid contributor, but he is the only one on that list with a career sack.

  10. pgh15212 says: Apr 16, 2013 9:28 AM

As long as Dick leBeau and Big Ben are in the fold, this team will compete.

The injuries have to regress to the mean right…I mean the injury bug can’t keep ruining the season!!!

  11. bigbenownsthenfl says: Apr 16, 2013 9:29 AM

Funny a 49ers fan and a ravens fan points out obnoxious fanbase! Seeing as though they are indeed 2 very obnoxious fanbase’s! Oh the irony is just too much!!!

  12. beauregard says: Apr 16, 2013 9:42 AM

Broncos, Texans, Bengals and Patriots. Dolphins and Steelers come in as the wildcards.
That’s your AFC playoff teams for next year.
Ravens will take a slide during a rebuilding year.
Once you’re on the dance floor anything can happen.
Steelers need to find a way to finish strong.

  13. cannonballdookie says: Apr 16, 2013 9:42 AM

As Mike Tomlin has once professed before, “The demise of the Steelers is greatly exaggerated”.

The WR corps is just fine for this season, and Sanders should shine with a larger role. TE is a big need though even if Miller is healthy. They can draft an athletic pass catcher in the third round or so that this draft is deep with and develop him in two TE sets. RB is never a priority in today’s NFL. I still want them to pick up Bradshaw or even Stevens-Howlings who’d be a great fit as a speed/third down back. Keenan Lewis and Ike Taylor came out of nowhere to become quality corners, so nothing is holding back Cortez Allen or anyone else from being successful. Harrison and Woodley had zero impact last year, so drafting a young pass rusher should be a priority, but we have Jason Worilds who is young and hungry. It is also unrealistic to think Woodley fell off a cliff already.

Also, if they could have any good fortune with offensive line health, they have an entire line of talented guys who are well under 30 and could be a major strength.

Besides, Pittsburgh always prefers to play their games on the FIELD, not on paper before the season or let alone the draft even starts. Go ahead and crown Baltimore again, or hell even Cleveland and Cinci who haven’t won a playoff game in god knows when. I’ll have my money on the proven powerhouse known as the Steelers. Any questions?

I find it ironic that there’s other fans that feel the need to post about how obnoxious Steelers fans are in a Steelers post.

    Nobody sees the irony there?

  15. lemonhead7 says: Apr 16, 2013 9:45 AM

As a Steeler fan, and I’m a little concerned. They are going to need to find a few diamonds in the rough in rounds 3-7 if they’re going to fill all of these holes. Thankfully, if the O-Line can stay healthy it can be a unit of strength this year when it hasn’t been for quite some time. I’d love to see a playmaker like C. Patterson or a immediate impact player like J. Jones . It will all depend on where the chips have fallen when picks 1-16 go down. They’ll marry value with team need nicely with both of their first 2 picks. With any luck they can make a move at Lacy in round two.

  16. mungman69 says: Apr 16, 2013 9:46 AM

Steelers have to reload and I doubt if they can do it in one year.

  17. ottomanismydog says: Apr 16, 2013 9:55 AM

Reminds me of 1998 and 1999 teams. Biggest difference is the Ben at QB and the talented young o-line is in place.

The conference will be up for grabs in ’13. I can see worst case senario 7-9, best case 9-7. 9-7, in the top heavy AFC, may make the playoffs

  18. ac540 says: Apr 16, 2013 10:01 AM

The only thing saving this team from losing records the next few years will be their third place schedule because as bad as they look, they’re still better than losers like the Jets, Titans and Chiefs.

  19. ravenator says: Apr 16, 2013 10:26 AM

Um a competent front office and players who actually contribute… did you cover that?

  20. steelforce43 says: Apr 16, 2013 10:27 AM

I know that I am in the minority here but…
I think the Steelers should trade back. Get as many picks as they can. Only about 4 draft picks in a good year make an impact on any team. I don’t think anyone stands out as a must have at 17. We need depth, Period! I don’t care which direction we go in the first round or even if we trade out but I’d love to see us rent Bradshaw for a year, gamble on Lattimore, get Mike Mauti ILB late in the draft (LEADERSHIP), S. Bailey at WR, and one of the quality safeties in the 2nd round. I love these players and I hope all are in Black and Gold next year.

Really? Two Super Bowls in the last 8 years the Steelers have been to THREE Super Bowls, winning two of them.

The Steelers have had 3 coaches since 1969, 44 years.

Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert have already matched the Cowher Super Bowl record, in 1/3rd as many years.

Come on Florio, I know you aren’t a Steelers fan, but you are in West Virginia, and you should know that Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert are safe.

    We expect more from you.

Steelers will be 10-6 this coming year. Whether that is good enough to make playoffs we will have to see. I would have hoped the NFL world by now realizes that this franchise has been the most consistent playoff team since the 1990s

  24. joetorious says: Apr 16, 2013 10:36 AM

So they pretty-much need everything except DL, CBs and STs. Agree.

I know most other Steelers fans don’t or won’t agree, but it’s time to blow this team up. These are going to be wasted years for Roethlisberger, and so, for team interests – not Roethlisberger’s – I’d love for them to get rid of him and fully rebuild now.

On another note, loved the lead in this entry – couldn’t agree more. But then, you had to try to be all cutesy – per usual – and come with a bunch syllogisms and word play, which isn’t your strong suit (though you clearly try your hardest to make it so).

I really can’t understand why sooo many people on this site hate on the steelers. EVERY successful organization has obnoxious fans. Pats, Giants, GB, Bmore, including my steelers. These franchise’s are the model of consistency and the measuring stick for running a Nfl franchise! (Maybe i just answered my own question)So with that said, it won’t be long before we are a contender again. First round I would prefer Jarvis jones or Vaccaro. wr and rb are a dime a dozen!

  28. citizenstrange says: Apr 16, 2013 11:01 AM

Tomlin said he thought the team was “scalded” by missing the playoffs last year.

Really? I would have thought they would have been “scalded” when Roethlisberger was BADLY outplayed by Sanchez

Sanchez: 20 of 33 for 233 yards, 2 TDs, ZERO picks and over 100 qb rating
Roethlisberger: 10 of 19 for 133 yards, ZERO TDs, TWO picks and a 35.5 qb rating

in the 2010 season AFCCG and would have lost to the Jets 19-17 if not for William Gay’s fumble recovery TD.

Or two weeks later when the Packers stomped them in the Super Bowl jumping out to a 21-3 lead in a game that was not nearly as close as the final score.

Or the next season when TIM TEBOW badly outplayed Roethlisberger

Tebow: 10 of 21 for 316 yards, 2 TDs, ZERO picks and ZERO sacks
Roethlisberger: 22 of 40 for 289 yards, 1 TD, 1 pick and FIVE SACKS

in the Steelers one and done playoff loss to ….. TIM TEBOW.

Well if Tomlin thought the Steelers were scalded last year with the number one defense in the entire NFL, if the defense slips to even number two this season will be the Spanish Inquisition.

The Steelers have accomplished something the Browns haven’t been able to do for a few decades now: renewed the “rivalry” between the two teams. The sad news is they’ll be battling for last place in the division. Welcome to our world Steelers. You’re not going anywhere this year and for a number of years to come!

As a Ravens fan I know the Steelers will be competative. The Steelers needs are over exaggerated. They’ll work it out.

I still think the Ravens are the better team. Joe Flacco has proved all the haters wrong. The D, even though we had to say goodbye to some of our favorites this, has already retooled and the fdraft is still a week away. The draft will be nothing more than creating more and more depth. Although I think losing Boldin was a mistake.

  35. swagger52 says: Apr 16, 2013 11:41 AM

Boldin had 65 catches..That was not a mistake. He disappeared in games. He did come up big in the Super Bowl. He came up big with Cornerbacks mugging him. That is hard to replace. However, what Flacco really needs is 1/2 of what Matt Ryan has: Roddy White, Tony G, Julio Jones – not Anquan Boldin. Flacco got to the AFC Championship with Derrick Mason, so he doesn’t need much.

  39. majormeatcurtains says: Apr 16, 2013 11:55 AM

I hope we can get a solid WR in the 2nd. Maybe the kid from Baylor? And in the 3rd I would like to see the RB from UCLA. As for the OLB they will find someone. QB who cares? And I would also like the TE from Cincinnati looked at also. Big potential. 8 more days and the draft will be here. Then we will have to hear about the most random dumb stuff from Ravenator and morganstan100 about how them and Ozzie used to tour the locker room as kids. And this stuff now we got to worry about Harrison? As I thought you guys have to worry also. And Sanders has been a Raven 3rd down killer. Just remember when Now he doesn’t get to hide behind em no more. And his true coaching ability is coming out this year. And it’s going to be as pretty as T Drizzles bottom lip.

Give me a break. You’re a fan cuz they are a successful franchise, that’s it.

The cuboard is not bare in the Burgh…Top 10 D EVERY year. 2-time SB winning QB. Young ascending O-Line.

The Steelers lost their 2 biggest playmakers (consistent TD scorers), who oddly were their 2 biggest malingerers (Mendenhall and Wallace).

Priority #1 is to get a WR and RB who can score TD’s…must be addressed early in the draft, IMO.

Expect one of Patterson, Austin, Hunter, Hopkins, Patton, Woods, Wheaton, Stedman Bailey, Eifert / Ertz (TE), to be in Black and Gold next year.

One of Lacy, Bell, Ball, Franklin, Bernard, Michael, Randle, Jamison as well.

We will maintain the #1 ranked defense next year and that will always make us competitive. Defense wins championships. If we can be decent on offense and stay healthy Yes the Steelers will surprise people next year including ravenator

  49. Deb says: Apr 16, 2013 12:52 PM

Whether or not we want to acknowledge it, Colbert’s draft track record in the last half of his tenure with the Steelers hasn’t matched the success of his early years with the team. We need a good draft this year.

I’ve pressed for a Bettislike power back, mentioning Lacy because … well, I’m a Bama fan. But Eddie has had some injury issues that nag at the back of my mind.

Jarvis Jones was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, but as others have mentioned, we have a bigger need at ILB. And great as he is against the pass, Jones didn’t perform nearly as well against the Tide’s running game in the SEC Championship. Apparently it’s time for me to accept that Harrison is gone and the Steelers are gambling it all on Worilds at OLB. So we should look more at ILB.

Although we’ve done a good job filling our needs on the o-line, if there’s any possibility of getting Bama’s Chance Warmack, we should take it. Players like that don’t drop in your lap too often. Otherwise, we should be looking for someone who can offset the looming loss of Polamalu–a defensive back that can be a game changer.

Wide receiver? We’ve spent too much on that position already. Fill those holes in the later rounds.

What are there yappers going to do when the Steelers come out like their fiery selves and make a nice, healthy run? It’s easy to kick a team while their down when you hear nothing but negativity, but negativity surrounds the Steelers in almost every offseason and the rats sure are out while they can.

Haters will never learn. I bet more than 95% of your pieholes will be shut and nowhere to be found in November. Guaranteed. OTA’s are about to begin and it’s a whole new season. Every team has changed and every team WILL change so don’t act like your team is safe from a weak season. The Steelers were at their weakest in 2013 and still finished even.

No doubt the coaching staff will tighten up and most of those same men that went to 3 Super Bowls this decade will turn it on and hopefully, stay healthy on the field. Health is our only concern. Not Baltimore, not Cincy and certainly not Cleveland.

It’s cool how year after year when the Ravens would either split or sweep the Steelers, the Steelers fans would insist the only thing that matters is rings. Now, as the Ravens win another ring, the only thing that appears to matter to Steelers fans is a meaningless mid-season game that sealed the season split with the Ravens. I guess that was your Superbowl! Ouch, right?

Seriously, the Steelers will remain competitive and the two teams will remain the top dogs of the division until the Browns or Bengals prove otherwise. And both the Steelers and the Ravens were better teams a few years ago than they are now, IMO.

Ravenator, I hope like hell we have you in Pittsburgh on opening nite. We are going to beat the stuffing out of you and end the Ravens season right from the start.

We will take the linebacker with our first pick, take a RB with our second pick and a WR in the third round. No worries.

Just worry about how we are going to pick off Joe Fakko so many times because the the real MVP of the team (Boldin) is gone.

The Ravens will return to being our woman this season
    ————————————–
So you’re relying on rookie draft picks in key positions to immediately step up and be the steelers cure all for the first game of the season? Wow, seems like a lot to bank on, you might want to at least see what clowns Colbert drafts before you put such lofty expectations on them. And by your logic on draft picks we should immediately replace Boldin with a rookie phenom so look forward to your favorite AFCN QB dropping bombs on your old decrepit D to start the season. That’s also assuming you guys get us in the opener, but my money says the nation wants to see someone actually challenge the ravens and make the game close, so that probably won’t be the steelers since we have a history of whooping them on opening day (35-7 sound familiar?)

  61. greysolon says: Apr 16, 2013 1:32 PM

Sure feels like a team on the decline.

They rode that weak division for a free playoff spot for years, but now that Flacco has become a top QB and the Bengals are good, the going is a lot tougher for them.

Don’t dislike them or their fans, though, so I wouldn’t mind seeing them get good again.

  62. ravenator says: Apr 16, 2013 1:36 PM

Sorry steeler losers – Raven fans can’t hear you – the superdome was deafening, You know that superdome place, it’s where the superbowl was played – and where the Ravens won with MVP Joe Flacco. You must’ve stopped watching after your meaningless regular season victory – the crowning moment of your entire season for the last two years.

    Cheers!

Don’t get me wrong its a nice gesture, sure–if you’re a baseball player pledging that amount for hits and strikeouts. After taxes his 80 game checks will go about a quarter millionish. I will donate $10 which is actually relative in proportion. Not trying to belittle the tragedy.

this has nothing to do with this article. just wanted everyone to know what a tool some people are. the article im refering to is danny amendola giving money for passes caught and dropped to help people in boston

Actually after seeing the steelers win 4 times as many superbowls as the ravens, watching Charlie Batch beat Flacco was a crowning moment in the season. Priceless!!!!! You’ll understand if the ravens ever experience that many sb wins in your time…….Expect the same thing to happen this year except Big Ben will be back torturing the ravens secondary.

On another note, I agree with originalsteelcurtain 100 percent. The steelers should definitely target a wr and rb in the 1st and second rounds and follow that with a cb or free safety in the mid to later rounds. The steelers could use better depth in the secondary. I would definitely consider taking patterson or austin if availabe in the 1st and ball or lacy in the second.
I hope they go that route. I wouldn’t object to jarvis jones but our bigger need is definitely at wr and rb.

Lordy. Steelers fans are now attacking each other while the FO points fingers after the BB fiasco. Could there be a clearer sign of a team about to go down the tubes? I think not.

  69. competitivecompetitioncompeter says: Apr 16, 2013 3:29 PM

It seems like I’m the only armchair GM to think this, but Jonathon Dwyer looked like the answer.

Either I’m missing something (and I admit, I didn’t watch a lot of Stealers games last year, cuz relevance) or he is massively underestimated.

  70. bleedblackngold96 says: Apr 16, 2013 3:41 PM

I personally hope the steelers wait til the third to get a WR and get a DE or DT in the first. Keisel is not getting younger and McLendon isn’t half of what Casey Hampton was. size wise and skills wise.

Oooops I stand corrected. Sorry guys, no my math skills are just fine..just typing to fast.

Crown, I do however will stand by rb over cb first. The steelers have 2 starting Cbs in[place. IMO, they will need a starting rb before CB, not sure where you get that unless you believe dwyer is the answer and he is not. I guess, Everyone is entitled to their own opinion tho.

4 0 So does yours as the last time I checked we have more SB victories than the rat turds have and that is all that counts little man. Keep barking for attention, which you may get, but you won’t get the respect we get with our record over the last forty years.

  74. Deb says: Apr 16, 2013 4:33 PM

I’ve been annoyed about the Harrison situation and not overly thrilled at the way we handled Sanders. And I’m not one to make bold predictions of winning playoffs before any games are played. I don’t do that with Bama either–and we’ve won three of the last four championships and had the year’s top recruiting class. But overall, I think the Steelers are in good shape as long as everyone stays healthy.

Loved the Gradkowski acquisition–have been posting for a couple of years that we need a viable backup QB so we can sit Ben when he’s unable to perform. The Steelers addressed my ongoing concerns about the o-line in last year’s draft, and the lack of balance in offensive play-calling with the hiring of Haley. Our problems last year had more to do with injuries and learning a new offense than anything else. We could just as easily have been 13-3 as 8-8.

Those sounding Pittsburgh’s death knell are just talking smack–and engaging in some wishful thinking. They wouldn’t be doing either of those things if they didn’t still perceive the Steelers as a threat :)

  75. crownofthehelmet says: Apr 16, 2013 4:35 PM

@steelcurtainn – you’re correct, I do beleive Dwyer is the answer (coupled with a change-of-pace back). We have no one at corner besides Ike, and it’s a pass-happy league.

But like I tell everyone, us Steelers fans have very little to complain about, yet reading these posts one would think the Steelers are in the middle of a 15 year playoff drought. Relax fellows. There’s a reason this franchise is the model franchise in all pro sports.

Steelers were definitely the model for all the teams that couldn’t put together a winning record. Now it’s the model for shooting yourself in the foot during the post season. Didn’t you read the expert’s article? There’s no leadership. None. The locker room is toxic. Big Ben is broken. Bill Belichick has the Steelers circus jumping through hoops. Meanwhile, Ravens have achieved long term elite status with the most exciting QB since Joe Montana. You’ll see when your secondary is passing out trying to catch Jacoby Jones and Torrey Smith. Yikes!

Yikes! I now have two handles to bash the steelers with. I think I have fooled every one with that crafty move… Ravenator you are a stupid sad example of what Baltimore produces….idiots are watched in most cities and when missing are searched for, but in your case they hope you are lost. ill gladly take ANY Bama lineman..Offense or defense..We need Play makers..the ones who actually score TDs. 21 points per game ain’t fina get it done Especially when 9 points are from the kicker and with a defense that don’t create turnovas. We’ve went O-Line #1 #2 or #3 the last 5 years. if its not right by now it wont be right.

The Steelers are a model franchise for all of sports? Do they have 27 Lombardi trophies? Nah Id have to say its the Yankees, Celtics, Lakers, then MAYBE the Steelers however 6 Superbowl victories in 80 years isn’t that great. 4 of them in the 70s then years of nothing until 2005.

On a non smacktalk note the Steelers do usually manage to stay competitive so I am sure they will figure something out, but please quit glorifying your win with Charlie Batch at midseason it makes you look foolish considering the Ravens went on to win the Superbowl and at the time both teams were not full strength. It sucks that both Raven and Steelers fans had to go two games last year with injury plagued teams and we were robbed of our usual classic match ups…

In years when we have superstars and in years when we dont. do we have down seasons, yes, who doesnt?
i know we’re still a factor when our failures are celebrated the way many of you celebrate it. it’s newsworthy because it doesnt happen very much anymore (except for the first 40 years of the franchise…which ended in the 70s… so if you want us to stop talking about the rings from then, stop talking about how bad we were before them. and stop acting like we havent done anything since then.)

its fun to read all the comments from all the people who hate the steelers. Colbert sucks, tomlin sucks, the rooneys suck, the OL sucks, the steelers are going to lose every game, etc, etc. Keep dreaming. Just cuz you wish it doesn’t make it so. I am 100% positive that colbert knows more than any of you. Even without pointing out the 3 superbowls they have been to with tomlin and colbert it is easy to see from your ridiculous comments. Tell us again that colbert doesnt know what he is doing and that it is because he is clueless that we didn’t have cap space this year. I guess it had nothing to do with the fact that the steelers had a bunch of really expensive players over the last few years that won the superbowl twice. Pretty sure that is the point. When you are in that situation eventually you are going to have to rebuild. i would also like to point out that the problem with the OL last year was injuries. The rest of you better hope that the OL isnt healthy this year because you are all in trouble if it is. They have some good young players on the line that could dominate for quite awhile if they are all healthy. The steelers went 15 – 1 in ben’s first season becaue the OL dominated everyone. Ben was still learning. They struggled last year because of injuries but if they are healthy ben will tear all the rest of your teams up no matter who the WRs are and i am sure the defense will be top 5 again, it always is. Go ahead and count the steelers out, they thrive when that happens. Talk your trash now cuz when september gets here the steelers will have a competitive team on the field once again. As steelers fans we celebrate tomlin, the rooneys and the front office because they know just a little bit more than any of you and they give us a chance every year no matter who we lose in the offseason.
