Ozzie Newsome: Don’t say we aren’t good enough to make playoffs

Ozzie Newsome AP

When the Ravens lost or chose to say goodbye to key players like Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Anquan Boldin, Paul Kruger, Bernard Pollard and Dannel Ellerbe early this offseason, there were plenty of people wondering if the Ravens would be able to mount a strong defense of their Super Bowl title in 2013.

That feeling meant some criticism for General Manager Ozzie Newsome, although you’re hearing a lot less of that after the Ravens signed Elvis Dumervil, Michael Huff and others to make up for the departures on that side of the ball. Newsome met the media on Tuesday and took the opportunity to make it clear that he made choices he felt were in the best long-term interests of the team. And he took a swipe at his critics by strongly stating his opinion that the team isn’t going to suffer at all in the short term.

“We like our football team this year. I’d like for someone to tell us we’re not good enough to go to the playoffs right now. Can anyone say that? OK,” Newsome said, via Jim Corbett of USA Today. “Well, then, we just wanted to make sure that when we looked downstream, we were able to keep the Torrey Smiths, the Dennis Pittas, guys we wanted to keep. And if you don’t make tough decisions this year, then it would be tougher to keep those guys in years to come.”

Newsome made it clear before the offseason got underway that he wouldn’t make deals to keep last year’s team together if he felt it would hinder the Ravens’ cap down the road. He followed through with that while also adding replacement pieces that should keep the team competitive this year without too much pain down the road. On paper, it looks like a job well done for Newsome, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given how consistently the Ravens have done well under Newsome.

Nope, The Ravens wont repeat. It took them till 2 weeks before the season ended to fire there Offensive Coordinator. Then they lose a bunch of starters. The Ravens will be lucky to be a sub .500 team this seeason.

Just listened to this entire press conference, what I saw and heard is a group of leaders who knew about the players they were gonna lose to free agency and how they would work around it. Pundits and hatred filled Raven bashers were so quick to chime in during the 4 day period know as “The Ravens Exodus” yet once again Oz and Co proves why they do what they do for a living.

  7. radrntn says: Apr 17, 2013 11:27 AM

i guess i am old school, but the way i look at it, until somebody else knocks you out, you are still the defending champion, and for now ravens are #1.

I love what Ozzie and Company have done so far this offseason… I’m just hoping they start addressing the LT position. I personally don’t want to see McKinney back on the team and from what I hear they prefer KO instead of Oher in that spot.

If they are going to give Joe that big contract (which I was/am ok with), they better have a solution to protect him.

  9. Steeley McBeam says: Apr 17, 2013 11:32 AM

I’m just playing, but I do have a serious question. Everyone is saying Flaccos deal is team-friendly. That may be true — this year. What happens in 2015 when the guarenteed money is $18m and with 4 years still left on the deal cant be re-worked? Those are the years you’ve got to worry about, not 2013-14.

  10. pittsburghfan71 says: Apr 17, 2013 11:32 AM

The ravens will be in the playoff hunt next year. but in a few years when Flacco will be making over 25 million a year that is when they will be hurting unless they restructure contracts and get into the same trouble that the Steelers are in.

  11. jnbnet says: Apr 17, 2013 11:33 AM

as much as I hate the ratbirds….I mean the Ravens, I have to admit that Ozy has done a good job. Pluging one or two guys in a unit is easy. Wholesale change like they did this year is something else. It will be very intersting to see how it pans out.

  12. 1grub says: Apr 17, 2013 11:35 AM

Anybody still going on about losing all the starters, an excerpt from a BR.com article: “Defensive Overhaul Planned In October
Talk about sticking to your plan. Newsome explained that the decision to make so many major changes to the roster after this season was being debated as far back as October, long before the Ravens made a Super Bowl run and then watched as a parade of starters departed. Clearly, the front office made the decision to overhaul things because it looked in the mirror and saw a team that needed to get younger and faster. When that team happened to pull itself together and win the Super Bowl, the decision to overhaul it became “a lot tougher,” Newsome conceded, because everyone became so attached to it. But Owner Steve Bisciotti “has put us in charge of making us competitive in 2014, 2015 and 2016,” Newsome said, so they went ahead and pulled the trigger on the overhaul anyway.”

Nobody knows if the Ravens will repeat.

But the first step is to make the playoffs. Which the Ravens almost assuredly will do.

  15. southpaw2k says: Apr 17, 2013 11:44 AM

Unbelievable. To all the doubters on this thread – do you really have that much faith in the Bengals being the class in the division in 2013? Do you truly believe the Steelers, with all the holes and age on both sides of the ball, could realistically overtake the Ravens?

And ONE MORE TIME….if you truly think the Ravens were nuts for letting Kruger, Reed, Ellerbe, et al, walk, then you have to concede the teams who had signed them did not overpay for their services, and Reed is still able to play at the high level he had set for himself back in his prime. If you can’t agree to all that, then you contradict whatever point you’re trying to make.

    ————————————————–

This comment just shows how little you know about football. Firstly, the Ravens offense IMPROVED after they fired Cam Cameron. Secondly, you obviously have only been following the Ravens since they won the Super Bowl, otherwise you would know that the Ravens (like all football teams) lose starters every year and it hasn’t turned out too badly in the past. Lastly, you say the Ravens “will be lucky to be a sub .500 team this season?” What does that statement even mean?

Will the Ravens repeat? Almost certainly not, and I say that as a Ravens fan. Very few teams do repeat. But with Ozzie Newsome as GM, the Ravens have at least a shot at the playoffs every year.

  19. blacknole08 says: Apr 17, 2013 11:51 AM

Ravens got better this off-season by letting their guys go. Flacco isn’t the best QB but he proved himself to be a leader last post-season. Ray Rice and Torrey Smith are still there. Dumervil is an upgrade over Kruger. Webb is coming back from injury. This is still a good team on paper.

There is no clear favorite in the AFC North, and I see this team winning 10+ games this season. (Remember they only won 10 regular season games last year).

Not a Ravens fan but Ozzie knows what he is doing.

  20. hlna55 says: Apr 17, 2013 11:52 AM

The warning shot has been fired… and Oz is next. He’s just getting people use to thinking about it. Unemployed in 2 years. He’ll get 1 year gratis for fluking out a SB win. Andy Reid syndrome is coming!! Party at my house when Ravens are picking in the top 10 in next year’s draft and Flac-OH is laughing all the way to the bank like Kolb and Fitzpatrick before him with their well earned contracts from the Cards and Bills.

  21. logicailvoicesays says: Apr 17, 2013 11:53 AM

Everyone knows the Ravens are the second team in the Maryland market. They can’t compete with the Redskins. Even without RG3 the Redskins blew out the Ravens.

The Redskins win Super Bowls. Other teams just hope to make the playoffs.

  22. tmac4454 says: Apr 17, 2013 11:54 AM

I think that Ozzie made a good decision. He played the game so he knows what it takes to become successful. I personally would not have let Ed Reed go, I would have signed him for another year because he is a smart player. Good Luck Ravens!!!! Glad they put Brady out of the playoffs that is all I wanted from the Ravens.

  23. crownofthehelmet says: Apr 17, 2013 11:58 AM

  25. jprcox says: Apr 17, 2013 12:03 PM

Ravens might be good this season, and they might not be – a whole new team.

But you cannot sit there and say losing:
Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Anquan Boldin, Paul Kruger, Bernard Pollard and Dannel Ellerbe

    Is made up by signing:
    Elvis Dumervil, Michael Huff

    You have to be realistic.

  26. steeelfann says: Apr 17, 2013 12:03 PM

Ravens defense was bad last year (Steelers beat em with Charlie Batch). They are going to be hideous this year and Flacco took em down with his contract. They won’t have anyone around him. No defense and no way to outscore opponents. But hey, they did win a championship, so kudos.

  27. melkipershero says: Apr 17, 2013 12:05 PM

Flacco doesnt deserve what he got money wise BUT he had a great playoff track record before they won it all. They could do much worse.

  28. randomcommenter says: Apr 17, 2013 12:08 PM

The ravens got lucky last year. Roethlisberger missed both games and the steelers still beat the with Batch and nearly beat them with Leftwich.

The ravens will repeat. All they need to happen is for Big Ben to get injured, and Gronk to get injured when they play the Pats, and they need a Denver DB to fall down and allow a Hail Mary, and then they need a WR to rip down jump balls from Flacco when he isn’t really open.

But that’s all. The ravens are all set.

Well, considering the main players that won that superbowl for your team are gone that makes you a very weak defending SB champ. So when your team flops and can’t get a wildcard spot we will all just laugh at the “champs”.

  30. thestrategyexpert says: Apr 17, 2013 12:12 PM

The Torrey Smiths and the Dennis Pittas? So who are the other Smiths and Pittas in the WR and TE groups, or is it just that there is those one guys of noteworthiness and the other Smiths and Pittas make up the other positions? Wasn’t Anquan Boldin a Torrey Smith before he was lost, if so then wouldn’t his own words signal a concern with the WR group? If not, what made Boldin so great to want for last year towards a title run yet to not want him this season? Same goes for guys like Ellerbe and Kruger. Who are the best players in the other positions and how do those guys compare with sayDennis Pitta?

  31. greysolon says: Apr 17, 2013 12:13 PM

They certainly are good enough to make the playoffs.

All the talk about the guys gone… Reed is nearly finished. Lewis was already finished. Pollard is replaceable. Ellerbee and Kruger are the ones they will miss, but Dumervil will be an All Pro with that team.

Last year it was the OL coming together and Flacco finally became a pretty darn good QB– that’s why they had their great run, not because of aging defenders.

  32. daubs17 says: Apr 17, 2013 12:15 PM

  33. deathonwings410 says: Apr 17, 2013 12:20 PM

  34. logicalsteelerfan says: Apr 17, 2013 12:24 PM

I am very impressed but not surprised at the moves bmore has made. In my opinion I still believe they have holes at the Mlb, safety and wr position. which they probably will fill during the draft. On another note I believe the ravens will be just as cash strapped as my steelers in a few years. Big contracts for joe, rice and Ngata. Big contracts coming up for Torey, webb and I’m sure there’s yall would know better than me. Nevertheless they will remain competitive!

  35. Steeley McBeam says: Apr 17, 2013 12:27 PM

  36. enoughofthatalready says: Apr 17, 2013 12:33 PM

Like the Steelers, the Ravens do not normally finish below .500. They will win 10 games just like they did last year but the Bengals are going to run away with the division. The Bengals defense is highly underrated and they have the offense to sweep both the Ravens and Steelers next year. Barring injury to Dalton and/or Green-Ellis and/or Green, I see next year as the Bengals’ year. And this is coming from a pragmatic Steelers fan.

  37. harrisonhits2 says: Apr 17, 2013 12:33 PM

Don’t know that they’ll be in the playoffs this year but they certainly have a good chance of getting that far.

  39. enoughofthatalready says: Apr 17, 2013 12:36 PM

Sure the Ravens made some positive changes on D, but it is going to take an entire pre-season and at least a quarter regular season for these guys to get used to playing with each other (ha-ha) and learning each other’s signals. I still see a big hole with the loss of Boldin. Boldin and Jones were the true Super Bowl Co-MVPs and the loss of Boldin will hurt.

Avoiding? No. The 2014 number is also relatively low. Going forward the NFL’s cap is expected to rise.

All Steeler fans pretending Flacco’s contract numbers will bring them back to the back ignore Brady and Peyton have had huge contracts for years and it’s never hurt those teams.

    Keep pretending.

  43. tjrogers09 says: Apr 17, 2013 12:55 PM

Once again, people in PFT think they are so smart and know all about football and front offices… The Raven’s defense was 17th-20th all season!! The pick up’s have improved the defense to be a better team on paper already… Love Reed and hated to see him go but at the same time #20 has lost a step and maybe has 2 seasons left in him. Plus this years draft is safety heavy…

The offense is still the exact same minus Boldin, once again, they will draft a WR to fill his role. It’s extremely rare a SuperBowl Champ repeats so everybody can stop saying they’re not going to repeat, this is something we all should know as fans usuallydoesn’t happen. However, I will be we will be right back in the mix to give it a solid chance of a repeat. As for Flacco’s contract, yes we all know in 2 more seasons he will have to restructure, come on people, all big contracts get restructured around year 3 of a 5-6 year deal…

The Ravens front office clearly knows what they’re doing..They consistently make it to the playoff’s and win games in the playoffs…Case Closed.

Ravens are better than ever. The defense has already improved without a single draft pick. Flacco is the best QB in the NFL. Rice is the best running back and Pierce isn’t far behind. And remember this — only the Ravens can take a punt returner who fumbled (leading to a touchdown) for Houston and make him a quasi SB MVP for Baltimore. That’s the Ravens way. Deal with it.

It kills me when someone watches one game and think they know everything about a team. If you followed the Ravens for more than that one playoff game you would realize we have always had confidence in Ozzie and the decisions he makes. He’s gotten rid of key players every off season and we continue to improve with the new guys he brings in. Another testament to your stupidity is saying we would have been on and done if it weren’t for that ‘fluke’ play. Again, did you watch more than one game last season? because we beat the colts the week before that which accounted for a playoff win for the fifth consecutive year, a testament to consistency as a result of Ozzie’s shrewd management decisions. Try watching a full season next year then come back here and make a comment with knowledge backing it.

    ravens are a joke

If by “joke” you mean “world champions” then you may be on to something.

But you know what’s really a joke? Someone who thinks enough of Alex Fraudriguez to use his name in any way, shape or form.

Funny how Ravens fans avoid the Ravens 2014-2018 contract numbers questions at all costs.

    =====================================

Funny how the Steelers have avoided winning a playoff game in 2 years at all costs.

To the Ravens bashers: Any time you see “ratbird,” you know you’re reading a Steelers fan comments. 8-8 last year, they’re all throwing rocks from a glass house.
As far as Flacco is concerned, he had the best playoff TD passes vs (0) interceptions, tied with Joe Montana. Has Big Ben done that? Nope.
As far as the playoffs are concerned: We went through this a few years ago when Derrick Mason, Todd Heap, etc., left in the same year. Made the playoffs anyway.
    Ozzie knows his stuff. Period.
I see a 6th straight year in the playoffs coming. After that (note the Denver game), anything is possible! That was the best game in the NFL in years…..

Steely Mcbeam: 3 posts on a Ravens story? Even “logicalvoicesays” confines his posts to 1 or 2 when it is about another team. I keep wondering how it is all these Steeler fans are so interested in post about the Great and Powerful Oz. Shouldn’t you be reveling in your own teams recent accomplishments…oh wait.

Good example of a typical raven fan boy hypocrite . Calling out SteelMcbeam because he posts too much on raven sacred threads……too funny. Ravenator has had up to ten post on a single thread about the steelers so go sit by your dish until dinner.

    —–

So you admit to modeling your behavior here after Ravenator. Only with less ridiculous bragging and more pointless insulting. Got it.

    @nofool

I’ll admit we probably shouldn’t be quite so arrogant, but it’s really hard not to rub it in everyone’s face when every keyboard jockey and espn analyst said we didn’t have a chance. Heck, Vegas gave us losing odds in every playoff game last year. Well we proved everyone wrong yet here we are again with people saying we’re dead in the water and don’t stand a chance. As long as people keep bringing us down we’re going to keep rubbing it in their faces when we succeed…

From a Ravens hating Steeler fan; tip o’ the cap to Ozzie. He’s one of the best GM’s in the NFL.

  69. lovefootball4life says: Apr 17, 2013 4:40 PM

Love the focus on Ozzie’s face in the picture. Looking forward to camp when we start to see how this reloaded team starts to shape up.

Getting quite sick of the trolls. Nofool, you know what makes you worse than most? You attack and insult specific people directly hiding behind your keyboard. That’s cowardice. Others like Ravenator and even logicalvoice are annoying but they mostly spout out general comments, sort of like someone with Tourette.

  70. steelcurtainn says: Apr 17, 2013 5:07 PM

The ravens were 10-6 with all their full arsenal of leaders last year(who are all gone). Truth is they will finish no better then 8-8 next year.

  71. jacktheraven says: Apr 17, 2013 9:12 PM

Steelcurtain – You have to let your hate stop clouding your brain. Do you realize how foolish you’ll look if The Ravens make the playoffs again? Be honest. What was your prediction for The Ravens last year? SB win? Joe Flacco, MVP?

  72. morganstan100 says: Apr 18, 2013 8:42 AM

I have no doubt the Superbowl Champion Ravens will make the playoffs this year. They did it after SB XXXV when the team was in much worse shape, and they’ve done it every year Elite Joe “Montana” Flacco (SB MVP) has been the leader of the offense. It’s sad that Steelers fans want to project their own misery on the Superbowl Champions. Maybe they should go on Dr. Phil and talk it out.

  73. ampatsisahypocrite says: Apr 18, 2013 2:46 PM

The overpaying of mediocre Flacco will end all hopes of the playoffs for Baltimore. Might as well prepare now, is all they’re saying.

11 1 Calling me out as a coward and then making a tasteless comment about Tourette’s syndrome instantly destroyed what little credibility you may have had….I expect that type of comments from raven trolls and I go after them any way I can.

The way you trash people directly is what I don’t like – and not just Ravens fans. Its not right. You wouldn’t say these things to them in person but you do here where there is no fear of retribution. The Tourette’s reference is simply pointing out the difference between someone spouting off a comment that is not normal and out of place vs. your tactic of directly insulting a person.

If you posted an honest football response it would be fine but all you do is insult. I’ve had enough.

Report comment. Very weak attempt at getting out of your tasteless Tourette’s comment. And you think all the raven insults on steeler threads are something steeler fans enjoy. You can’t have it both ways….so grow up. If you can’t take it don’t give it…very simple concept you should have been taught by now.

  77. lovefootball4life says: Apr 19, 2013 6:13 PM

I think you are missing my point and this is my last attempt. There will always be comments like “we are the best in the AFCN” or “Oz is better than Colbert” or “we have 6 rings” or “we beat you with Batch”. Those type of comments will happen on every thread about any team. The difference is you chose to respond to a particular person and insult them. I don’t like a person insulting any other person for any reason. You would never do that to them face to face but only behind the keyboard. That behavior is what I am asking you to stop doing.
