The Chiefs have signed free agent linebackers Zac Diles and Akeem Jordan in recent weeks, but they aren’t done adding bodies at the position.
Mike Garafolo of USA Today reports that the team has signed linebacker Orie Lemon after a strong performance in a tryout during the team’s minicamp. Lemon made the jump from the Cowboys’ practice squad to the active roster last year and saw action as an inside linebacker after Sean Lee was lost for the season.
There’s an opening on the Chiefs defense for a linebacker to play next to Derrick Johnson inside, so Lemon will presumably find himself in that mix along with Diles and Jordan. Lemon only has five games of NFL experience under his belt, so he probably isn’t the likeliest winner of that competition but it isn’t like Diles and Jordan are unscalable mountains standing between him and the job.
The Chiefs also signed Frank Zombo at linebacker, part of a large class of new arrivals that have made their way to Kansas City since the start of free agency. The draft will bring more new faces as the Chiefs try to start off a new regime with more wins than they managed in 2012.
