Steelers hang onto Steve McLendon

Steve McLendon AP

Sometimes all it takes to reach a deal is a little nudge.

The Steelers announced today that they had re-signed restricted free agent nose tackle Steve McLendon to a three-year deal.

That’s a day after McLendon visited with the Packers, who could use some help up front themselves.

The interest in McLendon made sense, because even if the Packers signed him away, they’d have owed the Steelers no compensation, since Pittsburgh tendered him at the lowest level ($1.3 million) and he was undrafted.

As the Steelers defense continues to age, McLendon’s now in a spot to take on a bigger role.

    Excellent move.

Steelers finally did something right this off-season. McLendon’s a rising star, couldn’t let him get away. Especially with Hampton being this old.

    Good.

  4. dickroy says: Apr 18, 2013 2:45 PM

This was a good move. With all the positions we are thin at this year, we don’t need to make nose tackle another one.

  5. stillers1229 says: Apr 18, 2013 2:46 PM

It’s too bad we have no money to sign our own guys… oh, wait… exactly.

  6. Stiller43 says: Apr 18, 2013 2:46 PM

Really the only old part of their defense is the secondary now (3/4’s of the starters over 30). Otherwise they have only 2 other starters over 30 (foote and keisel).

    Old and slow and…oh yeah…gone.

He probably laughed at whatever stupidly low number Ted Thompson offered and then decided to take what Pitt was offering.

If they hadn’t signed this guy the Steeler fans would be saying that he wasn’t any good anyway. Don’t kid yourself, you are a bunch of bandwagon fans. Watch the Steeler faithful fall to the wayside once they learn to settle for mediocrity.

Don’t worry, it is the same for every team. The cheers get louder the more you win.

  13. dickroy says: Apr 18, 2013 3:14 PM

I really like this move. I don’t know what to think about keeping Sanders yet. Now if the Steelers can just have a good draft they should be in good shape. I just hope one of these 3 are available at #17. RB Lacy – OLB Jarvis Jones – WR Patterson.

  14. ravenator says: Apr 18, 2013 3:15 PM

Hah. As if this guy will make a difference. Yes congrats you stopped the bleeding but you will still remain bottom feeders.

    Cheers!

Smart move, McLendon is definitely an up-and-coming stud at NT. He is nearly as strong and eats up blocks like Hampton, but he adds a pinch of athleticism to the NT role — something the Steelers haven’t had since Joel Steed.

Hm, funny, then why is there a waiting list for season tix year in and year out, regardless of the previous year’s record? Oh, those bandwagon fans sure do hold on strong, huh?

Another FA uses GB to seal a deal with another team. Packers get used by players more than any other team. Packers don’t sign people because of cheapness but ineptness.

Only way Packers get a FA is if they grossly over pay (Joe Johnson) or that player has ZERO alternative (Charles Woodson).

Grady Jackson,Teddy Bruschi,Steven Jackson are just a few notables who used GB over the years.

I think it is time to start ignoring the jealous fans from other teams that post on Steelers articles. We’re better than that. Also, I wondered all of last year why we didn’t use McClendon more after the pre-season he had. I expect him to be a stud this year and I am very happy we hung onto him.

  19. planosteelerfan says: Apr 18, 2013 3:33 PM

Bandwagon fans. I was raised in Pittsburgh. Don’t insult us. I have been a Pens, Pirates, and Steeler fan since 1970. Buccos losing streak doesn’t affect who I root for, when the Pens were down in the beginning, still a fan. Win or lose, still bleed black and gold. Check other cities, I’m sure there are plenty of the same.
If you get on here, make an intelligent comment.
    Good resigning!

  20. descendency says: Apr 18, 2013 3:33 PM

Smart move, because the Packers could have offered him 2 million this year and basically the Steelers couldn’t have done anything to stop it.

Plus, this new contract likely reduces his cap impact this year.

True, but 4 of the 5 are over 32 & Polamalu(31) played “older” last yr, so it’s reasonable to expect more injuries & slower recovery to these 5 this yr which is going to make for a difficult season.

Because like every team you have a core of fans that will be there through thick and thin, but don’t kid yourselves, a majority of your fans are bandwagon fans. I am just tired of every Steeler fan saying “We kept him, so he is great; we cut him, so he sucks.” If this guy is so good why didn’t we see him more last year, why wasn’t his name called, where was he at the probowl?

And the whole ring thing: can I see one of your rings? Oh, you weren’t a member of the team, well then shut up. You don’t have any rings, the team you root for has rings. I am all for pride, but that is just obnoxious.

I am not the kind of poster to troll Steeler threads, I have a degree of respect for the team and how they have been consistently great throughout the years, but too many of your fellow fans act like they know more about football than the fans of any other team. Get over it. They kept a marginal player who may turn out to be a contributor. He may even develop into a great player, but you know as well as I do if he went somewhere else most fans would tear him apart.

Don’t you dare lump me in with that sweat-sock receptacle ravenator, this is just me ranting. I have done it to my own team, the Bengals, when some of our moronic fans have gotten to big in the britches. I am more critical of Bengal fans then I will ever be of Steeler fans, I am just not having a great day and got fed up with the hypocrisy.

I will get down off my soapbox now.

I seriously wonder if you have ever seen a Steelers game. I know for a fact you haven’t seen a Steelers-Ravens game, especially last season or any playoff matchup. Each of our now-departed/retired backup QBs gave your squad the business last year, even beating you with Charlie. We didnt have any business keeping either of those games close, but like usual theyre a couple of 3-point games.

And you had better be British with this Cheers nonsense, otherwise youre just a blithering idiot! Oh wait…

Ike had a freak injury..Clark only missd the Denver game because of his Sickle Cell..I agree with #43 he’s injury prone with the same injurys calf’s Hamstrings and Knees Woodley was just outa shape and too heavy Nothing to do with age And Harrison is gone so it don’t matter..EVERY YEAR “WE OLD & SLOW” but top 1-5 for the last 10 years! Ill take that 18ppg allowed any day

Steeler fans, your team has gone two years without winning a single playoff game. Now, you’re celebrating because you held on to someone who you just referred to (yesterday) as a second stringer? Sounds like the FO is running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Yikes!

  28. madjack58 says: Apr 18, 2013 4:45 PM

Now draft ILB, S and a mid round corner and the D keeps rolling.

  29. cup1981 says: Apr 18, 2013 5:02 PM

Well, shaunypoo, you obviously haven’t noticed that the steelers were grooming him all of last year to take over for Hampton. All he was lacking was weight (he was only 280 when he came to the team), but he hit over 300 lbs and proved he could play with the big boys on a part-time basis.

I call it as I see it, I don’t simply say that anyone the Steelers keep is good and who they let go of is bad. Never have never will. I can always back it up with facts.

Mike Wallace was the product of a good running game and a QB with a good arm. He has neither in Miami and his drops were becoming a major liability. Once a WR gets a case of the dropsies, he rarely recovers from it.

On the other hand, James Harrison is pone that I would have liked to see back. At 100 percent, he is still a good pass rusher and can likely take a little more than half the snaps per game. Even after all of this, I would still like to see him back on the team.

Emmanuel Sanders isn’t worth $2.5 mill and he will not be starting opposite of Brown. That will go to either Burress or Cotchery. Sanders just doesn’t have the bulk and reliability to play every down and more than 3/4 of the snaps. Am I happy to see him in Black and Gold? Yup. Happy they are paying him $2.5 million for likely 40 catches in 2013? Nope.

Now, I will hop off of my soap box…

Steeler fans are really too cute. You sign your own player and suddenly you’re better? I mean seriously, who can compete with the steelers when their signings of the offseason are Plaxico Burress and Bruce Gradkowski. Talk about some game changers!

Your front office is pathetic, time to own it and quit harping on a player signed who wouldn’t even make our practice squad.

  31. ravenator says: Apr 18, 2013 5:17 PM

I love the fact that Tim Tebow still haunts steeler fans. Must be tough to get that out of their minds as it was the last time they sniffed a playoff game.

Meanwhile the Ravens have owned the division, they win a superbowl, and every steeler fan’s favorite target wins MVP (something Ben has yet to accomplish).

But they still talk as if they are relevant, competitive and worthy of playing on the same field as the Ravens.

    Too cute

    Cheers!

Couple of things moron Ben has three SB appearances and Joe has one… Yes that is the first number of your two digit IQ. Nothing haunts the steelers like a white suit does the ravens.

Seriously Ravenator, what is your issue? You hate us, we get it. Not a problem.

Ravens lost how many starters? OH, you replaced some of them, so your team is now better? What about learning the system? What about leadership? What about chemistry?

OH, that stuff doesn’t count, does it?

Missing from our defense, which by the way was #1 in the league last year, is a corner that was already being pushed for playing time, and an old LB that has not only lost a step, but was being WAY over paid.

    But, we are worse?

The Ravens signed more FA’s this year than the Steelers have signed in the last 10. Why is that? Because yours WANTED to leave, and ours want to stay.

WE are not worthy to be playing on the field with the Ravens? One of the funniest statements I have ever heard.

Go from when your Ratbirds joined the NFL.

    Record
    Ravens 150-121-1
    Steelers 169-106

    Playoff Record
    Baltimore – 14-7
    Pittsburgh – 14-8
    Head to head, 3-0 Pittsburgh

    Division Championships
    Baltimore – 4
    Pittsburgh – 8

    Super Bowls
    Baltimore – 2
    Pittsburgh – 3

By all means, tell me again how much better the Ravens are than the Steelers?!

    Cheers

People said it was old last year, and what happened? #1 in defense and that’s without T. Polamalu.

    Try again.

  38. steelersfordays says: Apr 18, 2013 9:08 PM

whoever calls steelers fans “bandwagon fans” and say that we always say “they suck” when they leave and “they are amazing” when we sign them… its because its true. we only lost one GOOD (present tense) in keenan lewis. Mendenhall isnt worth the money, neither is wallace. Harrison is old. McLendon is a rising star and he should more than fill the large shoes of Casey Hampton. Why do non steelers fans even comment?

  39. tedmurph says: Apr 19, 2013 12:21 AM

Yes, steelers resign 2 undrafted free agents for peanuts and now they’re young and fast, and Colbert gets his genius moniker back. That’s how steeler fans think. We’ll see if they make the mistake of draftig Lacy in the 1rst rnd, that will keep everyone laughing.

Poor scoobie no answer to where the white suit disappeared to and why, but if you still believe in the tooth fairy, and Santa you would think you have the answer. I am not alone thinking the white suit is more important than the blind homers like you feel.
