Winfield’s deal has base value of $2 million

Antoine Winfield AP

We know the drill by now.  Initial reports of a new contract often look better than the deal itself reveals.

The latest example?  Seahawks cornerback Antoine Winfield.

Six days ago, multiple media outlets reported that the one-year agreement is worth $3 million.  They forgot to include “up to” in front of that.

Winfield’s deal, per a source with knowledge of the contract, has a base value of $2 million.  Of that amount, $500,000 is tied to his presence each week on the active roster, at a rate of $31,250 per game.

Winfield also received a $500,000 signed bonus, and $500,000 of his $1 million base salary is guaranteed.  Another $1 million is available in incentives, based on playing time and interceptions.

At the time the reports surfaced of the value of Winfield’s deal, some suggested that the Vikings had a similar offer on the table.   If Minnesota were offering a base deal of $3 million and Winfield opted to take a contract with a base value of $2 million, that’s an eye opener.

Then again, it’s possible that Minnesota’s deal was worth “up to” $3 million, too.

Greatest cornerback in Vikings history, great guy in the community, and a great leader. I wish he were playing for us this year. Nevertheless, this is likely his last year and it’s better to move on a year too early than a year too late. If we spend a high draft pick on a cornerback, that will likely be better for the Vikings’ long-term interests.

This is outrageaous. Once again, our coach and GM are lying to us. Winfield still has a lot left in the tank – both on the field and more importantly, in the locker room. No wonder our players always leave.

  6. ahawkalypse says: Apr 18, 2013 1:22 PM

We are the Patriots west. Players take less to play for the Seahawks. We have come a long way since the “Southern Alaska” days. Doesn’t hurt once they get here they see how nice it is.

eye opener? eye opener to what? he didn’t want to go back to a joke of a franchise that has had one of the best running backs EVER and a top tier WR and can’t even sniff the Bowl? please. if he wanted to win, and have a chance at a ring, he had about 7 teams to look at. I’m sure he took the best deal possible of those teams.

    go hawks.

Very valid point. Vikings are building a solid young team, but Winfield only has a couple good years left, and the Vikes won’t be SB contenders in the next 2 years. So it could very well be that he wants a chance to win a SB before he calls it quits. That, or he didn’t like how he got thrown out like yesterday’s trash by the Vikes and chose to go elsewhere.

For this price, it would have been much better if the Vikes reworked Williams contract (which they just did) and negotiated a new contract for Winfield. He was a veteran leader on a young team, and he will be missed.

Best of luck to him in SEA.

Spielman the Magician do you even know your teams history or are you a bandwagon fan? Winfield the teams best cornerback ever? I am a Packer fan and realize how ridiculous of a statement that is. Do you recognize the names Carl Lee, Nate Wright, or Bobby Bryant? If not ask some of your fellow Viking fans to give you a history lesson.

  16. wludford says: Apr 18, 2013 2:02 PM

I’m sure Winfield was miffed at how he was let go from the Vikings, but then again being set to make $7 million as a nickel-back at age 35 could he really be surprised?

He could have got the same deal (market value) from the Vikings and finished his career with the Vikings. Hoping to win a SB with Seattle as a rental is kind of a sad way to go.

  17. pleazenufalready says: Apr 18, 2013 2:03 PM

Wow, so much “insight” from some of the commenters. This all boiled down to Winfield being butthurt about how Minnesota treated him and he signed with the team that offered him the best deal, other than the Vikes….end of story.

Yes, I know the names. I also know they weren’t as good as Antoine Winfield, in my opinion. Do you have to attack everything I say, even when you don’t have a point?

    Ahem, now then, about football……….

    GO HAWKS!!!

  22. jprcox says: Apr 18, 2013 2:28 PM

Who wouldn’t want to end their career on a winning note? For all we know he was best friends with P.Harvin and wanted to play together one last time.

Say what you want, but player want to play for seattle – fans are ultra-supportive, Coach is a players coach, and the team is considered one of the best in the NFL.

You can’t predict SB – but Seattle will do well this year however far they go. Playoffs anything can happen.

Kind of embarrassing when Packer fans know more about our squad than us – and it’s our squad. Winny is an excellent footballer, but I have to give the nod to Lee, Wrigth, and Bryant. Not by much though…

  31. seaeagle707 says: Apr 18, 2013 3:22 PM

taintedsaints2009- THAT is why we have Sherman and Browner (and Thomas). I’ll bet that Vernon Davis, could tell you all about the speed of Kam “Bam-Bam” Chancellor. Winfield is one part of an amazing defense, not the whole unit.

  32. jprcox says: Apr 18, 2013 3:26 PM

Seattle’s safeties can give Winfield better deep coverage he didn’t have in Minn. No one can argue that Seattle’s backfield is the best in the league – him integrated into that will allow him more aggressive play.

  33. spideysdog says: Apr 18, 2013 3:29 PM

  39. jdubb84 says: Apr 18, 2013 4:33 PM

I don’t know what idiot started calling Seattle the “dream team” when all of our players are low draft picks and nobody’s. the difference is, Philly (old dream team) started calling themselves that after signing big names and before they won anything. Seattle is dangerous in every category especially now. They got a D+ in the draft..the same draft who put out competing rookie of the year. Also runner up d-defensive player of the year. Etc. etc.

Not a vikings fan dude. Niners fan. We’ve seen plenty of championships and hope that there are more to come.

Fact is that you were beating down on the vikings saying that “weve seen the Super Bowl in the last decade”. If you need to use that as a “leg up” on the vikings fans you are pathetic. The truth does hurt…hope you enjoy the pain (as you did when the sonics left town or you drafted Rick Mirer)

Wow I bet that was a 49er fan talking about Kam “only” having one hit. The dude made the Pro Bowl off big hits and interceptions year two. Matter of fact, he was getting flag after flag for legal hits..They were just as hard as RIP hit he put on Vernon Davis in that 42-6 (no points for gonzo’s garbage time hail mary). Can’t wait for week two and the 49er bandwagon like it was 10 years consecutively before

  44. theytukrjobs says: Apr 19, 2013 8:22 AM

I mean, why bother? I’m sure the Vikes would have offered him something similar. Why move your family for one year of playing.

Maybe Winfield is really buying into the Seahawks bandwagon and he sees them as top contender for a ring. I love my Vikes and think they are well positioned to challenge for the division, but it is hard to argue with how good the Seahawks were last year and the serious stud players they’ve added to the roster this offseason.
