Report: 49ers ready to move into middle of first round

Jim Harbaugh AP

So far in the pre-draft chatter process, there have been a lot of teams willing to concede a few spots. Few have said they want to move up.

But according to Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, the 49ers could be interested in moving up to the 13th or 14th pick.

That’s a fairly specific location, but the 49ers are a team with a few specific needs, 13 picks to try to fill them, and the kind of roster that doesn’t have room for that many drafted rookies.

If they could get to the middle of the first, they’re apparently looking first for the eventual replacement for defensive tackle Justin Smith, but also have needs at safety, tight end and cornerback, or be in position for one of the top wide receivers.

The Jets (via the Buccaneers) and Panthers, respectively, own the two picks in question, and the 49ers might find a receptive partner there. The Panthers are short a third-rounder after dealing this year’s to the 49ers last April in a draft-day move to get defensive end Frank Alexander in the fourth round.

Smart move by the 49ers since they need to upgrade a lot so they don’t get too embarrassed if they can make it to a playoff game against the Redskins next year.

Are the 49ers ready to get stomped by the Redskins? #RGIIIcannotbecopied

  3. eastcoastninerfan says: Apr 22, 2013 12:39 PM

If it happens, I’d say we’re targeting one of the following:

    Sheldon Richardson, DT
    Kenny Vaccaro, FS
    Xavier Rhodes, CB

We have thirteen picks why not move up in the draft

  5. goraidersgospurs says: Apr 22, 2013 12:41 PM

How about moving up to #3, 9ers have no need for all of there picks & Raiders do!!!

I love this time of year, and watching all of the chess matches unfold. The Jets got the 13th pick from Tampa only hours ago and are already looking to parlay it into more picks (which they definitely need) …I wish Thursday would hurry up and get here. I am like a little kid hoping for Christmas to arrive.

  7. cletusvandam says: Apr 22, 2013 12:53 PM

I hope they are targeting a safety. Craig Dahl will singlehandedly be responsible for 3-4 losses if he is left as the starter.

  8. goldrush36 says: Apr 22, 2013 12:59 PM

I call BS. Considering nobody has seen a single Baalke/Harbaugh coming… no way they tip their hand on a move like that and if they did it is only to push another team to jump the shark

  9. kylehealy says: Apr 22, 2013 1:00 PM

    Tavon Austin
    Shelden Richardson
    Kenny Vaccaro

Those are the 3 guys I’d imagine they’re targeting if they’re looking to move up to the middle of the 1st round. Star would also be a possibility if he were to fall out of the top 10.

  10. duffer58 says: Apr 22, 2013 1:01 PM

They want to get to middle of first then ship that to Jets for Tebow. duh!

  11. linvillegorge says: Apr 22, 2013 1:10 PM

Based on Panthers’ GM David Gettleman’s comments, he doesn’t seem to keen on trading down. However, it’ll come down to who is on the board and just how aggressive the 49ers want to get in order to try to move up. If there’s not a stand out prospect on your draft board and they’re offering a handsome trade package, DO IT!

That would be something that the Raiders would do… only to set them back another 10 years.

  13. manderxcom says: Apr 22, 2013 1:16 PM

I doubt they trade up that high.

What they might do is trade up their 31st and 34th pick to the late 20s to pick up players like Datone Jones, Sylvester Williams, DeAndre Hopkins, Tyler Eifert, Tank Carradine, Desmond Trufant, or others.

The price for trading up for those spots are not much like 4th, 5th, or 6th, whcih the 49ers have plenty.

Also, they can just stay put at their spot and just double up on safeties like Eric Reid, Jonathan Cyprien, or Matt Elam.

  14. thejabronisayz says: Apr 22, 2013 1:20 PM

Not saying this is going to happen but i’ll be sick to my stomach if the 9ers trade up to 13 or 14 and take Tavon Austin. As a Rams fan they got jumped twice last year, first by the Jaguars (Blackmon) and then by the Cards (Floyd). Please don’t let it happen this year again, especially with the 49ers.

  15. Moudabo says: Apr 22, 2013 1:20 PM

Please move up to the 17th spot, the Steelers will probably be looking to move back.

  16. duncanthecat says: Apr 22, 2013 1:21 PM

Get someone who can blow up Seattle’s mediocre OL and create problems for in the back field.

Seattle’s QB goes down so does their season. Check on who their QB back up is.

  17. chrismatthewsucks says: Apr 22, 2013 1:33 PM

I wont matter, none of their draft pics started last year.. that trend will continue.

  18. braceyourselffor12 says: Apr 22, 2013 1:43 PM

    RGIII Cannot be stopped?

Yes he can. Yes he did. Yes WE will.

    GO NINERS!!!!!

  19. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Apr 22, 2013 1:47 PM

As Peter “Father of the East Coast Bias” King points out, NFL schedule major domo Howard Katz put the screws to the Niners with the most brutal travel schedule of the year. All told, the Niners have to travel a league-high 21 time zones this year.

That’s simply not fair. The SeaCrocs, much as I despise their ignorant fans, got jobbed too with five 10am start time games this year (1pm eastern).

    Howard Katz stinks!

As far as the topic of moving up in the draft – move up or not – the brutal 2013 Niner travel schedule will make their first pick irrelevant (at least this year).

Howard Katz should be required to travel with the West Coast teams for a year. I’m guessing he takes the subway to his comfy job

  20. mojave45 says: Apr 22, 2013 1:49 PM

I think the 49ers are likely to wheel and deal, but I don’t think that anyone has a clue as to who or what positions they are targeting. I think Harbaalke are the closest thing to a winning pair in the draft we have had since the Maestro, Bil Walsh. While only time will tell, it looks to me as f they think similarly. Keep your mouth closed, and your cards close to the vest.

  21. mojave45 says: Apr 22, 2013 1:53 PM

I think the talk about the prior draft is irrelevant until we wait a bit. It is hard to break into the 49ers starting lineup, which is a good thing. It gives the draftees time to develop. As for impact players this year from the draft, if we get two starters I would be happy, but I think we will see at least three players have some impact this year coming in.

  22. mmsierra says: Apr 22, 2013 1:57 PM

But according to Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, the 49ers could be interested in moving up
    ———————————————–
    Could ? Could ?
Is That a non story ?
They ‘could’ be interested in drafting Godzilla
He doesn’t need a guaranteed contract

    I hope they move up
But, this is a non story
    Plain and simple

  23. ontboltfan says: Apr 22, 2013 1:59 PM

They need to get above NO at 15 who have a need for FS and could likely grab Vaccaro. The next FS is Eric Reid who is ranked in the 50′s, mid 2nd rnder.

Trade w the Chargers at #11 please.

  24. sixjak says: Apr 22, 2013 2:02 PM

Smokescreen. Not tipping your hand is rudimentary pre draft decorum. It’s safe to say that Harbaalk is far past the basics when it comes to the draft and building a team. Prepare to be wrong on just about everything.

I did check. I also checked who the Niner’s back up is-Colt McCoy. YIKES!

  27. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Apr 22, 2013 4:04 PM

Unless you’re an expansion team, no team needs 13 rookies. No way they all could make the 49ers.

The smart thing to do is leverage some picks to move up and get some specific needs met and it looks like that’s what they will try to do.

  28. true9erfan66 says: Apr 22, 2013 4:38 PM

I love how all niners haters rip are draft. Last year an like harbaalke don’t know anything. Lol they forget it’s the same regime that drafted A. Smith who ppl thought we reached for but was actually best OLB in draft (yes better than miller check stats) than ppl thought we screwed up by not going high enough to get dalton hmm I’m sure bengals would swap for keap now if draft was redone. Plus it’s only 1 year lets wait and see what Jenkins does plus James is a dynamic player. Who is gonna be awesome but we forget about that. Fact is whatever our FO does I am completely on board. If we move up its a good reason. We will go after vaccro,or 1 of the big DL they like which ever 1 that’s is so relax Baalke and harbaughs got this. I however do belive we move up in the draft. I think it’s not for DL though it’s way way deep. I think it’s for Austin if he gets in reach or vaccro. I do realize that safeties is real deep but I really think there are only 3 who can be real game changers vaccro, cyprien & Elam. So to all you haters stop sounding dumb we had awesome draft got the best qb in league yes league. And they moved up to get him. Plus best OLB than following year we got James a great all around player. Plus than awesome other players like culliver, miller ect plus don’t forget Baalke was in charge when we drafted the best guard in league iupati and a tackle in Davis who is just getting better every year along with the second best MLB in bowman.

  29. randallflagg52 says: Apr 22, 2013 6:49 PM

Maybe the could trade up and take another 4th round wide out with their first pick. They really need someone to team up with AJ Jenkins on the bench.

  30. discosucs2005 says: Apr 22, 2013 8:01 PM

I totally concede that Jenkins was a miss, but to anyone who questions the 49ers overall draft last year, who exactly do you think should have been replaced?

Our only major need was QB, which was filled. Every other starting role, and even most backup roles were already filled. You can just say it was a bad draft with the only evidence being the lack of playing time without showing how the lack of playing time actually weakened the 49ers?

Like I said, Jenkins was a miss in that we needed someone to contribute this year, or someone that could replace Kyle Williams and Mario Manningham when they went down, other than that, way too soon to tell.

    James looks like a hit.

  31. forty9asty says: Apr 22, 2013 11:08 PM

I could see them moving up as a possibility. Assuming he falls that far, if they think Vaccaro is that much better in their eyes than say Reid or Elam (who they could get at their current spot), they could swap firsts and throw in a 2nd, 3rd or 4th. Alternatively, by now everyone knows how valuable Justin Smith is to our D-line and defense overall, so moving up to get his eventual replacement is a possibility as well. I think we could likely land one of two top TEs, Ertz or Eifert at our current spot so I don’t see them moving up for one. Personally, I’d like to see them jump up and “steal” Tavon Austin from the division rival Rams. Imagine getting a player with Harvin’s skillset, only younger and at a rookie wage scale, and minus the injury history. Boy this draft could get very interesting…

  32. hackphx says: Apr 23, 2013 1:22 AM

We need blue chippers especially on the DL, so why not give up your tradeable mid rounders for 1st & 2nd rounders this year and next. We’re going to have some big shoes to fill in 2014. Harbaugh has an old school mentality about starting rookies. He likes them to role play and then step up in year 2. AJ should have shown more when we needed him, but he wasn’t ready, so he’s a disappointment. This is not to say he will continue to disappoint. That’s what coaches are for. Competition and scrutiny will be intense.

  33. pop562 says: Apr 23, 2013 1:39 AM

Santa Harbaugh will be giving 49ers faithful an early Christmas present in this year draft.

I goats a lot of ideas bout how to get up in the teens, one would be to trade current ST player A. Dixon, and some draft picks, he is a good talent and is better than a special teams guy, needs a team with an available spot to start on. Also have that Culliver guy that doesn’t seem to like the west coast much. Hope it helps
