Mathieu missed two visits last week due to illness

File photo of Tyrann Mathieu in Baton Rouge Reuters

As Tyrann Mathieu tries to shed his “Honey Badger” vibe, he can’t afford to flirt with any type of controversy, whether it’s his fault or not.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Mathieu missed a couple of team visits last week.

Mathieu supposedly was ill.  For teams that are extra-leery of Mathieu, it may not matter.

There’s no reason to believe Mathieu was pulling a Ferris Bueller.  But with his history, it’s hard to get the benefit of the doubt, on anything.

Then again, it could be that Mathieu decided he’s had enough of being bombarded with the same questions about the same topics.  With 32 teams that feel completely entitled to poke and prod any and every prospect they choose, people forget that, for the individual kids, it can eventually get old.  Mathieu may have gotten to the point where he’d simply had enough.

Draft me, don’t draft me.  Just quit asking me the same damn questions over and over again.

Good luck finding any 21- or 22-year-old who wouldn’t eventually reach that breaking point.

He needs to be drafted by the Redskins… another head case CB would complete the set!

Might as well let arizona take him in, since he has a brother from another mother already on the team!!

Here’s a partial list of the teams which Mathieu was scheduled to visit/has visited:

    Pats
    Niners
    Cards
    Vikings
    Bucs
    Bengals
    Texans
    Sea Hawks

Plus ESPN flew him out for a photo shoot/interview.

Wish we knew which teams he missed. Most likely ones he may not have been interested in playing for…

Someone said this before but he has Diva written all over him I hope Oakland passes on him

  5. bengals3285 says: Apr 23, 2013 5:50 PM

The bengals seem to have the most interest in him for a fourth round pick. If they do pick him in the fourth, I sure hope mike zimmer turns this kid around. He has talent, but a terrible attitude.

  6. seaeagle707 says: Apr 23, 2013 5:52 PM

I hope the Hawks don’t sign him. He’d prob’ly want to be the star of every RealRobReport.

Honey Oil Badger to the Skins in the 3rd rd

  8. raiderapologist says: Apr 23, 2013 6:01 PM

Weed isn’t cheap. Mathieu doesn’t have an education to fall back on, so he might want to show some patience and answer the damn questions, no matter how many times he’s asked.

  9. pooflingingmonkey says: Apr 23, 2013 6:02 PM

I can’t imagine a player with his upside lasting until the third round. Some team will take a chance on him in the second.

  10. cheffyglenn says: Apr 23, 2013 6:04 PM

Steelers should have taken a look. I think Mike Tomlin would be perfect for him plus Carnel Lake training him. Oh well.

  11. cheffyglenn says: Apr 23, 2013 6:05 PM

    Steelers baby lol

  12. uncletuna says: Apr 23, 2013 6:05 PM

LSU fan, and he was exciting to watch…

But knowing all the drama with this diva in Baton Rouge…

The multiple-multi second chances he was given…

If I’m a GM, there’s absolutely no way I want this headache – no freaking way…

He’s a headcase living in his own world with no regard to those he harms because of their attachment to him…

Let him flip burgers and bag groceries – if he has any redeeming qualities another year off will help him or he’ll be in Angola or some other state mandatory residency…

  13. mazblast says: Apr 23, 2013 6:05 PM

At this point, some teams are probably as sick of his attitude as he is sick of answering their questions.

Good player? yes. Possibly great player? Yes. Pain in the a**? Definitely.

  14. rodneyharrisonstruckstick says: Apr 23, 2013 6:13 PM

I would not be surprised at all if the pats took him, say if they move out of the first round and pick up an early 3rd in addition to the meat and potato’s of the deal. he wont last until the end of the 3rd round.

These teams are offering six and seven digit paychecks. If the interviews are getting too long and personal there is always McDonalds.

So a guy gets sick. It happens.

Mikey Boy Brown, go get him.

Roll the dice my friend. Bengals have a zillion picks in this draft.

  19. pebes21 says: Apr 23, 2013 6:23 PM

This kid is a mess.. I can see him either going to the Raiders (love speed), Chiefs (Reid loves head cases) Eagles (Kelly put his athletic skills to work), or the Steelers/Pats/Giants taking a gamble late since they have strong player & coach leadership

Is that a joke? I suspect there are many, many, many 21- or 22-year-olds who would be thrilled to tolerate some significant harassment for the opportunity to play a game for a living, and make millions of dollars for doing so.

    ———————————————————-

And you’d be stone cold wrong. There aren’t many 21 or 22-year olds with the talent, pedigree and experience to have a shot at being harassed for the opportunity to play a game for a living and make millions for doing so.

There are only a handful of guys that meet this criteria….which is why they’re worth millions to team owners.

Every spring a-holes pretend they know how to read the soul of a man and then talk about what they think they know.

And then there are those who comment on all of it.

If Jay Glazer said he missed the meetings I’m inclined to think he was there 15 minutes early and brought coffee and danishes for everyone.

Cry me a f***ing river. There are hundreds who do it every year for the chance at making millions and there are many, many more who would do it for free.

Jamarcus Russell had a lot of potential coming out of college too….

    Just sayin’

  33. rolltide510 says: Apr 23, 2013 7:37 PM

Mathieu shouldn’t worry about what teams think of his off the field problems as much as the fact that despite being a good special teamer with a knack for stripping the ball when he gets to play a college-style “rover” position, he gets beat like a drum when he actually has to cover somebody.

  34. germanstingray says: Apr 23, 2013 7:47 PM

He was suffering from cannabinoid deficiency.

  35. bensstinkyfingers says: Apr 23, 2013 7:59 PM

Perfect fit for the Steelers, they have “head case’ vacancy since they gave Harrison the boot. Honey badger on “D’ with Sweet britches Polamolu would be awesome! then post game they could shampoo and admire each others famous hair.

  37. rcali says: Apr 23, 2013 8:30 PM

Does he wear one eye patch to team interviews?

He would really fit the part if the Bucs drafted him.

  38. cheffyglenn says: Apr 23, 2013 9:22 PM

    Very true

  39. turfczar57 says: Apr 23, 2013 9:32 PM

Grow up. These are your first job interviews. Forget the comparison to “normal” 21-22 year olds. Most of them aren’t expected to make millions in their first year or two of work.
“Draft me, don’t draft me”? Serious character issues here. Perfect fit for the Bengals.

  40. boobsmcgoo says: Apr 23, 2013 9:58 PM

I am an LSU fan. I have never heard anything about him being a diva or having a bad attitude. His problem was failed drug tests. His coaches loved the way he worked hard and played hard. His teammates loved him. Sure he talked trash on the field, but he was not a diva with a bad attitude.

  41. granadafan says: Apr 23, 2013 10:16 PM

Mike, as a lawyer, you ought to know that 90% of your post was speculation and conjecture. The facts you presented were that he missed some interviews. He claimed it was illness. The rest of your post was your speculation. OBJECTION, your honor!

  42. tdubdizzle says: Apr 23, 2013 10:56 PM

Lmao @ the guy who said Tyrann was getting high with Towley. Classic. Im rooting for Mathieu but i dont want him on my team. I hope the Steelers get him because i bet Mike Tomlin could really help the kid out and elevate his game.

  43. pturner81 says: Apr 23, 2013 11:22 PM
