Team needs: Washington Redskins

Philadelphia Eagles v Washington Redksins Getty Images

The Redskins surrendered their 2013 first-round pick in the trade for Robert Griffin III, leaving them with seven selections later this week — two picks Friday and five picks Saturday. With the QB position in good hands, addressing one of the NFL’s more porous defenses would be a logical next move for Washington. Here’s a rundown of the top draft needs for the depending NFC East champions:

Cornerback: Bringing in at least one rookie would be sensible with DeAngelo Hall, Josh Wilson and E.J. Biggers all slated to be unrestricted free agents at season’s end. It will interesting to see how the Redskins proceed at this position without a first-round pick in this draft and the 2014 selection meeting. If they can find a second- or third-day cornerback with promise — think Casey Hayward to Green Bay at No. 62 last April — it would give them some flexibility.

Outside linebacker: If Brian Orakpo can stay healthy after missing most of 2012 with a pectoral injury, he’s likely to garner a big-time second contract. Edge-rushing talent for a “30″ front is a must, and Orakpo — a free agent at season’s end — shouldn’t lack for suitors if at full strength. Orakpo is productive (8.5 sacks or more in three seasons since entering the league in 2009) and in his prime (27 at the start of the season). Even if Washington can keep Orakpo, there is always a spot for another pass rusher.

Right tackle: Tyler Polumbus seems the likely starter here after re-signing for two more seasons. However, adding a tackle prospect capable of backing up both spots now and pushing for the ORT job later would make sense.

Inside linebacker: London Fletcher will be 38 in May, and the other starter inside, Perry Riley, can test free agency after the season. The Redskins drafted ILB prospect Keenan Robinson in Round Four last April and could stand to keep adding to their options behind Fletcher and Riley.

Safety: Brandon Meriweather comes off an ACL tear. Reed Doughty will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2013 campaign. Ex-Buccaneers safety Tanard Jackson must seek NFL reinstatement to return to the field this season. If the Redskins get some breaks at this position, they could craft something of a workable solution from the personnel at hand for 2013. However, there’s a good deal of uncertainty. Bolstering the safety depth chart might not be a bad idea.

The Redskins’ first pick is in Round Two (No. 51 overall), and they have at least one choice in each of the next six rounds. This is good news for Washington, which needs to make good use of its selections. The Redskins can fill out a solid lineup for 2013 as is, but they have numerous free agency decisions coming, and their defense needs bolstering. Also, Washington could use a little more defensive line, wideout and running back depth, too. Oh, for a team to be in love with a quarterback when the Redskins are on the clock in the second round. Here’s a team that could use another couple picks.

Well they have Cousins so they’re set for quarterback…. maybe a new field to complement the healthy players on the team?

  2. ravensallday2012 says: Apr 23, 2013 9:29 AM

Lol y not just say a entire new team. Maybe a qb that will last entire year would be nice

  3. ravensdominate says: Apr 23, 2013 9:30 AM

Omg what doesn’t this train wreck of a franchise need? Just keep trying to be like the Ravens and maybe you’ll be ok.

Excellent Mike. You nailed it down to a Tee.
The Burgundy and Gold also need more PFT articles. We won the division, not the Giants. Under Snyder, Allen, Shanahan and Superhuman, this franchise is set both on the field and off until at least 2025. #GodsTeam

They desperately need a QB now that they ruined RG3.

according to LogicalVoice, the skins don’t need anything since he considerers them the best in the history of the NFL

Number 1 priority-Having them send a “cease and desist” letter to “Logicalvoicessays” to quit writing moronic posts.

  8. logicalvoicesays says: Apr 23, 2013 9:35 AM

I don’t want Brian Orakpo long term. He’s a nice trading piece and an overrated player to have for a long term deal. He’s the LaVar Arrington of this decade. Rob Jackson is the better player, had more big moments in 2012 then Rak has had in his NFL carrer and at the position for this team and 3-4 is better. #Thetruth

  9. blackfoot11 says: Apr 23, 2013 9:38 AM

Simply take the best available player at Safety and Corner on day 2. We know Shanny will find another late round RB to draft. Then use the other four picks to find a WR, OLB, ILB, TE. Go Skins!

  16. albertmn says: Apr 23, 2013 9:47 AM

This is really going to confuse and confound “logicalvoice” as he (or she, I don’t know) doesn’t think there is anyway to improve them. In fact, I am pretty sure he thinks they actually won the SB last year. Sorry to burst your bubble delusionalvoice.

  17. logicailvoicesays says: Apr 23, 2013 9:50 AM

The Redskins always draft well. Bruce Allen can spot talent from a mile away.

After the way the Redskins fleeced the Rams in the RG3 trade, no teams want to trade with the Redskins.

By next week, everyone will be scratching their heads again at how the Redskins had the best draft in 2013 even without a first round pick.

  18. obmig says: Apr 23, 2013 9:51 AM

I wouldn’t expect them to be using a pick on a rb. I also wouldn’t expect them to count on the safeties that are currently on their roster.

  22. paul82461 says: Apr 23, 2013 9:56 AM

The Skins have plenty of team needs on offense too. Good QB and RB they need everything else. Cant run all year again, Lots of game film out now and RG3 will need to be more careful, its in his head now.

    2nd Round Pick: DB
    3rd Round Pick: DB
4th Round Pick: ORT or WR
5th Round Pick: LB, ORT or WR
5th Round Pick: LB, ORT or WR
    6th Round Pick: TE
    7th Round Pick: Best Available

Skins are projected to have around 40M in cap space in 2014, so expect big things in free agency next year. Depth ar RB?? Seriously?? We have 2 RBs that could be starting anywhere else sitting on our bench and Alfred Morris is an “every down back.” Think I’m some ranting uninformed Skins fan? Do some homework and look at the numbers…

  24. lionsfan415 says: Apr 23, 2013 10:01 AM

  27. rtl1984 says: Apr 23, 2013 10:09 AM

Before all the RG3 hate comes in, lets be real here: Everyone trash talk him because of logicalvoicesays. He is a great athlete, great character, and I hope he comes back full form. Fun guy to watch.

  30. skinsfan87 says: Apr 23, 2013 10:23 AM

lots of defensive needs… secondary is the most glaring… getting Rak, Neld & Carriker back up front help the secondary alot. There are PLENTY of CB’s in this draft to get 1-2 and groom for a year. Another NFCEAST Championship can be had by Shanny & co… just choose wisely

  31. anthonyjnovelli says: Apr 23, 2013 10:29 AM

  35. dirtydrynn27 says: Apr 23, 2013 10:40 AM

The Redskins are ahead of schedule, only the Giants stand in their way in the east, and they are right behind the 49ers, Seahawks, and Falcons. Criticism of Griffin is a joke, he was injured on a freak play that Aaron Rodgers or anyone else could get hurt on. He is a dream player and person that anyone would love to have, any hate thrown his way is jealousy. Nothing more. So all you punk haters should shop for seasonings to try to make that crow or Raven that you’re going to eat next year taste better,

Exactly right. If there isn’t someone they want at that spot then I’m sure Shanahan wouldn’t mind flipping thet #51 for a couple of slightly lower picks. The more the merrier for a team in the Skins’ position this year.

  44. seaeagle707 says: Apr 23, 2013 12:07 PM

There they are in DC, with manicured lawns and parks as far as the eye can see. There they were, hosting a playoff game. On a field that’s probably shabby by local high school standards. It quite possibly cost them the future of their star QB (and one of our stars too). If something so basic and obvious as the playing surface is allowed to deteriorate that badly, what about the more complex issues of players and coaches? If you can’t get the simple things right, how’re you going to expect to do better with the people?

  45. boon613 says: Apr 23, 2013 12:12 PM

The Ravens are looking awful this year and the year hasn’t even started. How about you sign another Raider cast-off. I mean, if he didn’t make it on the Raiders, he’s sure to fit in now with a criminal record..Guess what? The Skins beat the Ravens with their backup QB. I can’t even name the backup QB on the purple peter puffers, but I’m sure they will remember the name Kirk Cousins. Hail!

    SMH!!!
This is a lemming type post. The media said that the field contributitted to hi knee injury so lets not think for our selves and just repeat a totally baseless commment.

Yes, the field was shameful, but it had nothing to do with any injury and certainly not RG3′s! RG3′s knee was injurred against Baltimore because he decided to cut back into the center of the field (instead of protecting himself) and Halote Nota (sp?) hit him in the thigh with his leg in the air.

So unless the air around FedEx is to blame the playing surface isn’t.

As an Egirls fan you have no right to talk about playing fields. The Vet was the worst surface to play footbal on the NFL has ever seen and it isn’t even close!

Your analysis is wrong. In today’s NFL where parity rules, any playoff team has a chance to win a Super Bowl. You don’t have to be a historically great team anymore to win a SB. The Giants and Ravens proved that mediocre teams can win a trophy. You just have to get hot at the right time and put together a little win streak in January.

    ————
This is the thought process that fans of every other “loser” team employs so that they can sleep at night.

First off, since the playoffs expanded, EVERY team needs to go on a January winning streak to win the SB.

Second, don’t you dare compare your little teams to those that have won the SB recently or are perennially in the hunt. NYG, Balt, NE, Pitt, GB. These teams aren’t mediocre. They are contenders year in year out. In the case of NYG, you need more than a “little hot streak” to win games AT GB (x2), AT SF (rain), AT Dallas (top seed).

Everybody makes such a big deal about the ‘Skins not having early draft picks. But there is a lot of talent in the lower rounds. Here is a list of some Pro Bowlers for every position mentioned in the article who were drafted after the 51st pick – the ‘Skins first – over the past few drafts. There is talent to be found out there.

    Cornerback
    - Corey Graham – 2007 Draft – Bears (#168).

    Outside linebacker
    - Zack DeOssie – 2007 Draft – Giants (#116)

    Offensive tackle
    - Marshal Yanda – 2007 Draft – Ravens (#86)
    - Jermon Bushrod – 2007 Draft – Saints (#125)

    Inside linebacker
    - Navarro Bowman – 2010 Draft – 49ers (#91)

    Safety
    - Dashon Goldson – 2007 Draft – 49ers (#126)
    - Thomas DeCoud – 2008 Draft – Falcons (#98)
    - William Moore – 2009 Draft – Falcons (#55)

    _______
Totally agreed, mostly. Washington cannot possibly be a Super Bowl contender for the next four or five years, but I that has a lot more to do with the NFC than DC’s roster: given that, “truly far” may be a bit of anoverstatement. On paper, the Redskins roster is solid, with the exception of the defensive backfield.

As for weapons, the Redskins had the highest scoring offense in the NFL last year: Garcon had the highest catch/TD or 1st down ratio in the league as well as the Snaps taken/ TD or 1st down ratio. Fred Davis was 4th in the league in both categories. Somebody else has to step up too, but they should be fine offensively with Garcon healthy all season (knock on wood).

Locking down the defense is absolutely essential: they’ll need a total secondary overhaul over the next two/three years. Adding D-line and MLB depth will also be crucial for a long postseason run.

Basically I agree with what you’re saying, but I’m not sure how a respectable secondary and some front 7 depth constitutes “truly far”. The only thing that makes a Washington Super Bowl run “truly far” away is the likelihood of a Dream Team-style collapse in Frisco or Seattle (Granted, I don’t think it’s likely, but the Redskins aren’t getting through either of those guys in the NFC Championship any time soon)

  68. peytonsneck18 says: Apr 23, 2013 2:13 PM

    Fail!!!

  69. officialgame says: Apr 23, 2013 2:18 PM

This team is ripe to take a step back. RG3 coming off a major injury, won’t sneak up on anybody, 1st place schedule, age, lack of depth at key positions, and didn’t improve much in free agency to name a few. 8-8 will be the best they can do.

  70. the3taveren says: Apr 23, 2013 2:18 PM

San Fran and Seattle both are very good teams but to say they are that much better than the Skins is juat insane! The Skins had the CHawks beat, all they really needed to do was sit RG3 at the half and it the CHawks would have gone home losers.

I know woulda, coulda, shoulda! However, no one thinks that had RG3 not retweeked his knee that the CHawks would have won that game.

The Skins ARE Superbowl contenders this year! Yes, even with the Mara salary cap penalty.

  71. blu4l1fe says: Apr 23, 2013 2:21 PM

Not a skin fan, and don’t really have any hate for the team, except, of course, for rants and claims of SB Championships, which they have NOT won yet, from fans that may be smokin’ some of that turf grass.

As far as the team is concerned, yes, I agree that they do draft decently. The team would have been in good shape years ago, if not for them, the owner specifically, spending money on “over the hill” vets that really did not help the team in any way. If they just stay the course, as they’ve done and keep the owner-meddling to a minimum, they should be fine.

For the upcoming season, as a Giants fan, I cannot wait. As far as I am concerned, the NFC East, the championship, for that matter, is an open ball game. Not going to claim winning anything, that would be ILLOGICAL!!!

I just saw this thread and I have to ask. Is there some kind of end of the season trophy they give to teams that beat an eventual SB winner?

I am asking because, well first off, for someone to have the words “common sense” in your username, you don’t seem to be making a lot of sense. What is it with fans claiming their team is better than the eventual SB champion because they beat them in the regular season? Hell, the skins can take, and they have, all the regular season wins they want, but I don’t believe they crown a second place in the NFL, unless I missed some update here, is there?

Give it up people, I’ve said it before, and I am saying it again. When you look up who won the last SB, or who won it for whatever year, the only reason the second place team is being mentioned is because they were the team that the eventual SB champs beat.

I am not saying don’t be proud of your team’s accomplishment, but I don’t know, at the end of the season, when all is said and done, it’s really pointless to celebrate wins against Philly or Dallas, unless it lead to a Lombardi Trophy. Don’t you think?

If there was ever a year for the Redskins to not have a 1st round pick this is it. Not a deep draft as far as talent by any stretch and they would have been picking 22nd over all.

That trade with the Rams to secure RGIII is favoring the Skins at this point.

  75. epicblacklightdotmpeg says: Apr 23, 2013 2:41 PM

    Man
Why all of the Redskin / RG3 hate? A agree that Orakpo has already lost his value. This smells like Carlos Rogers / Laron Landry situation all over again. The Skins knew they were not going to keep them after spending first round picks on them and then let them walk without recouping anything. Not smart.

I know woulda, coulda, shoulda! However, no one thinks that had RG3 not retweeked his knee that the CHawks would have won that game.

The Skins ARE Superbowl contenders this year! Yes, even with the Mara salary cap penalty.

    ————————————————–

Nice twist on the “woulda, coulda, shoulda”…. “HAD RG3 NOT retweeked his knee…” Let me see if I can follow. HAD the skins score more points than the Seahawks, they would have won the playoff game. Is that how it goes?

And another fan predicting SB contention.

You notice most of the hate in the comments towards RGIII usually come from FANS of teams that were DEFEATED BY RGIII!!! pahahahaa!!!1

  79. aprilwalker2013 says: Apr 23, 2013 3:10 PM

Heard that as well! Don’t know why some of these people read article bout SKINS.. Just to post hate comments?!?!

  80. seaeagle707 says: Apr 23, 2013 3:15 PM

the3taveren-What the heck is a “taveren”? A seaeagle is the correct name for a seahawk. SeaHAWKS were mythological, spirits venerated by the Native American tribes of the Northwest. You can find them on many totem poles in this region. Seaeagle or tern, is the correct name for the actual bird. But, I’m sure had the team founders used the name Seaeagles, that some folks in Philadelphia would have been understandably upset. Capiche?

Good, now you can insult me with some intelligence.

  81. seaeagle707 says: Apr 23, 2013 3:28 PM

For those of you who live in Fantasyland, (“if this or that had or hadn’t happened we woulda won.”) come back to Earth and accept the realities of what did happen. Our wild card game was not the first game of the season, in which the Hawks came from behind to win. Do you folks give kudos to the other team and knock your own down, when the Skins come from behind to win?

    I doubt it.

Exactly, Seahawks are a MYTH, created by the Redskins

  83. krax2b says: Apr 23, 2013 3:34 PM

RG3 will get destroyed in week 1, making the Redskins completely worthless for the rest of the season. Wasted draft pick.

I have been reading this for awhile and finally I had to comment. First, yes for a long time, our team had been ran by the inmates, but once Snyder finally fired Vinny Cerrato and put Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan in charge, it has changed. All of you who talk about Snyder like he is still in charge, making the Fantasy Football type of transactions, obviously aren’t looking at this team. He has stayed out of the way and let the football people run the business. No matter what he does, someone will find something wrong with it. As for the RGIII situation, we here in DC just went through this with Stephan Strasburg and we heard all of how they should have let him play and you may only get 1 chance at a World Series, and they sat him and look at the grief that they received when they didn’t win. Yes, hindsight is 20/20 and don’t you think if Shanahan knew the results that he would have sat him? RGIII is a athlete and he wanted to play and with age comes experience and he will learn from this going forward. The true and rational fans of this team knows what is going on! They are improving and building a team that will be right there to win it all. Finally, how many teams can take a 18 million salary cap hit, still win the division, take another 18 million hit this year, sign all but 1 key player without killing their cap going forward. Again, the grown folks are running the show now!!!

    ————————————–
First, how’s bob’s knee feeling? did you forget that happened in this game?
Second, I would hardly consider a 4th qtr comeback a whipping.
Third, the only two times your team has ever beaten us we went on to win the superbowl.

So no, we’re not at all mad about that game…

  87. jacktheraven says: Apr 23, 2013 4:24 PM

I am aware of the Skins victory over the Ravens. Not sure what that has to do with anything. 5 other teams beat The Ravens this past year. There’s only been 1 perfect team in NFL history.

  88. jacktheraven says: Apr 23, 2013 4:26 PM

As a Raven fan, I’m not a hater of the Skins. They got their franchise QB. He’s really good. Hope he stays healthy.

  92. commonsensedude says: Apr 23, 2013 8:21 PM

blu4l1fe, I am actually not anti-Ravens. The Ravens are my AFC team and a lot of my friends are Ravens fans. However, Super Bowl or not, when a jerky Ravens fan comes around to say stupid things like “Maryland has one team,” I do like to remind them that we beat them. We were the last team to beat them. Which means that, with all kudos due to the Super Bowl win, you still couldn’t beat us when you really needed to. Handle your Super Bowl props with humility and don’t feel compelled to try to start turf wars and rivalries when none really exist.

  93. jacktheraven says: Apr 24, 2013 12:18 PM

The “Marland has one team” was started by skins fan LogicalVoice. In reality, Maryland does only have 1 team. It’s the Ravens. DC &VA residents don’t want the Skins called Maryland’s team.

  94. commonsensedude says: Apr 24, 2013 12:30 PM

jacktheraven, you have a great team and all of that, but it has been in existence for less than two decades and its stadium was paid for by our tax dollars. There are a lot of folks in Maryland, especially around the DC region, who are ‘Skins fans and not Ravens fans and ‘Skins country also extends far down the east coast. Maryland is a great state and, though small, is big enough to have two playoff football teams.

  95. cowboyhater says: Apr 24, 2013 1:17 PM

Ok for real analysis here…. We can pick for need, but history shows with this regime that we will draft the best player on the board no matter what the position. This will hold true through round 4, and rounds 5th – 7th will be for need. Also, I have noticed in the previous years our scouting staff have found some nice RFA’s after the draft. Let’s continue to build the right way, and ignore the ignorant comments that have been placed on this site.

  96. jacktheraven says: Apr 24, 2013 4:33 PM

@commonsense – Agree with your points. But, like I said, LogicalVoice rants all the time about MD being a Redskins state. And also, Baltimore has had NFL football for almost 50 years. True, it’s been 2 teams, but we don’t feel like newcomers.

  97. yevrag3535 says: Apr 27, 2013 2:34 AM

Redskins will FAIL. they always do. A tougher schedule, a qb commimg off a bad leg and they have there history. How can we all sing ” FAIL to those Redskins,,,losers fans anyway

  98. rg3isvictory says: Apr 27, 2013 7:10 PM

I love the Hate!!! It means the Skins are moving in the right direction!!! Also, I understand that Baltimore is a small city with a HUGE crime problem but why do they have to have such a Napoleon complex? Rather than basking in their SB they’re acting like children! Truth is Bmore is and has been an embarrassment to Maryland for a very long time. Add to that that they lost their team to Indy and then stole Cleveland’s team, you’d think they’d at least be humbled as grateful the NFL gave such a poor, small market another shot. We’ve all seen how little they’ve support a formerly great Orioles until they started winning a few games. It’s a front running town that doesn’t have much going for it, so they bash the Skins b/c they their existence outside of football. It’s a shame the trash have overtaken Bmore!!!
